um… there will be drinks all over the floor in the basement. I lived in NY between 02– and 05 and there was all this debauchery going on down there which I gladly contributed to but I went a few weeks ago and there was a twenty dollar cover charge? Would you charge $ 20 to go to a bathroom in Botswana? if the answer is no then i think you need to look elsewhere for fun in NYC

What the hell. If an establishment is going to have the audacity to cover charge $ 10 for women and $ 20 for men, they had better deliver an experience worthwhile. Walking by on a Friday night, my friend and I were coaxed in by the owner standing outside. 420, a dark, dank dive, was packed but absurdly unbalanced with too many guys and too few ladies(I could count those in the room on one hand). The owner had boasted the bar had two floors, with downstairs for dancing. I watched as newcomers grabbed their drinks and went down the steps, only be come back up 30 seconds later after seeing the ghost town that was the basement. Is NYC prejudiced against plastic? Since we spent all our cash on hand at the door, I handed my card to the bartender. She held our drinks back and told me their credit card machine was down, but that I could get cash from their ATM. Pushing through the crowd of ogling beefcakes, I discovered that the ATM was«temporarily out of service.» Um… OK, so I had to leave the bar to walk down the street to a convenience store to get my cash. Looking back, I should have just left for good. When I drink, I dance, and here I found myself instantly surrounded by men sipping cheap gin and licking their lips watching. Ew. If that wasn’t enough to make me refrain, the music was — top 40 choruses hacked to pieces. At least the DJ was open to requests, but what he did with them wasn’t enough to save 420 from an «Eek! Methinks not.»

As does any good story, this one begins with a group of pirates. But let me first preface by saying that I am not sure that 420 deserves a Unilocal.Long ago relegated to the world of the irrelevant, this place probably doesn’t need my review to remind it of its status. Back to the pirates. It was a year ago when a troupe of pirates beckoned me inside. And as I politely declined(I didn’t have my eyepatch on me at the time), I thought, «this place must truly be desperate to try to lure people with nothing but the promise of some pirate booty…» A year later(last week) I found myself actually inside this bar for a happy hour. It was fine walking in until you lingered too long in any one place and realized the thermostat was set at 104. Plead though I may, the bartender took no pity on my sweat-stained self and suggested(impolitely) that I stand near a fan. There was no one there except for our small group(on a Saturday night), ok maybe some guidos gone astray, disoriented by the heat… but really no one. The place was just dead. Boring. And blah. Lame. lame. lame. Gross. God, give me anything but this… anything…even a pirate party.

Highly Recommended Out close to our hotel on a Sunday night, everyplace we looked up was kind of slow. Then we passed 420 and it looked and sounded like a great time from outside. When we got in the vibe was even better! Try a ‘red corona’

I went here with my boyfriend on a Wednesday night, and when we got there I was immediately discouraged. There was like 8 people here, including the staff, uggh, and it was a BBW party. I had no idea of that, but regardless we stayed anyway. It was cold as hell outside and I just wanted a drink, so we ordered drinks, and sat by the window. More people started to come in so we stayed. It ended up being pretty packed, and they did a raffle, which I won, so no complaints on that part! Drinks are a tiny bit expensive, and they put them in those tiny plastic cups, which feels ghetto to me. So I feel like your paying for a larger drink but getting only half or something… not cool. Music was good, mostly hip-hop, r&b, right up my alley! Bathrooms were generally available, but both are unisex, and one had a light out all night. But. I found that toilet paper, soap, AND paper towels were available. Major plus! I would go back…

My boyfriend and I wanted to do some bar hopping in the area, and we started off at this place. When we walked in the place was pretty much empty, but the music was pretty good. We got a table, sat down, and went to the bar to order some drinks. The place got a little more packed as the night went on, but never to the point where anyone had to stand. The drinks were so-so and the bartender wasn’t very nice. Oh, something else that kept happening throughout the night, that really got on my nerves, was some of the employees there kept changing the songs that would be playing from an ipod … when the song isn’t even done yet. It felt like an upscale house party — just wasn’t feeling it. I feel like maybe I went on an off night or something when I read the higher reviews, but I’m not sure if I can ever get myself to go back.

I luv, luv, luv this place! Everyday of the week it’s something else. They have a Jazz night, Karaōke night, and weekends are great when you want the club atmosphere without the club drama. It’s available for private parties. And the staff is always super friendly, especially one of the bartenders Heather. This is def a place to stop by if you want to lounge or party it up on the Upper West Side.

This place is definitely cool. I met a friend here for drinks and had an awesome chill time. Only a few other people there in fact.(then again its monday night…). I liked that it was an atmosphere where we could actually catch up. Music in the background was the typical popular stuff but not too loud or obnoxious yay! The bartender was really friendly and when she saw I was unsure what to get ended up reccomending me two yummy drinks that were right up my alley. I like when I go to places and the bartender is nice and knowledgeable like this! And they were definitely my type of drinks… delicious and deceptively alcoholic! Another plus for me its near the 79th street 1 stop! I’ll be back!

I’m surprised by such the low ratings of this place. After dinner our group of 12 wanted to do some lounging around and drinking. After going into, seriously, at least 4 – 5 different bars, we settled on 420. We showed our IDs sans paying cover charges and headed to two open tables in the mezzanine area. The place was packed on a Saturday night around 10PM or so. There’s a good selection of beers as well as cocktails. The only thing about the cocktails is that I found them weak and expensive… a bad mix. I ordered the pome-haze margarita($ 12) and wished I had ordered a beer. Music was current and the DJ was playing songs off his Mac. There’s usually a dance area downstairs, but there was a private party going on so the narrow walkway in front of the DJ(by the bathrooms and downstairs entryway) served as the dance area and we were just tearin’ it up! It looked like everyone in the place was having a good time, whether they were dancing, chilling at the bar or sitting at one of the tables. I’d come back for the loungy-feel of the place.

Despite it’s name it is not a jolly good time. Every time I’ve been there I’ve been scarred for life. Once, this chick tried to pick me up for her brother, then she turned around and sniffed coke. WTF? Once, while standing in line to use the restroom, a man pushed past me and skipped me. Once, these drunk girls pushed our stuff, then proceeded to lie down on it to dance provocatively. I could go on, but you get the picture. Not a good look.

Please Close Down. I think the bouncers bring their own red mat for the entrance, have a hilarious boxed in area for them to stand near as they open up to the huge lines that they got in their mind. this place is terrible. posers, wastes of life, etc. the best thing about this joint is the hilarious 2 minute dating nights that they have — they post on their windows how tomorrow night is 40 and feeble meets latin prince, or something similar. Please Close Down — you cant be making money.

I think everyone is being a bt harsh on 420. The place is awesome for happy hour that serves such cheap($ 3 – 5) drinks and does not skimp on the amount of liquor in your mixed drinks. You can order food — we did form Hummus Place and it got there in 15 minutes. The experience was great, and after 8 the place was getting packed! I heard the downstairs is nice too. I’d revisit for sure.

man, there are a lot of people hating on 420. i celebrated my 25th birthday here with 50 of my closest friends(it’s how i roll). its perfect if you have a large group of people and youre looking for a nice space to take over. no cover. no line. loungey type of atmosphere. great mix of hip hop songs on the dance floor downstairs. no creepy guys, minus the ones we came with. KIDDING! large breasted bartenders(not kidding. it was like that seinfeld episode). what’s not to like?

Not too crazy about this place– its not exactly small but for some reason I was cramped. The Guinness tasted strange so I was forced to drink gin, which is never a good sign. I thought the music was great until I found out it was just my friend’s ipod. haha. But the reason I didn’t like it– the bartender. She took forever to get to you, then forever to get a drink, then each time she turned around for change she started texting on her phone. She was awful. Its not bad since most other bars in the area are divey but I probably wont be coming back

If a frat bar, a dive bar and a lounge had a threesome, 420 would be the ugly result from that disgusting exchange of fluids and irresponsible decisions. It felt like every douche from Columbia who graduated in the last 3 years was there, collar popped in all its glory, while accompanied by the junior hedge fund managing skank who loves them. Which I guess is why your bar-wenches refused to take my friend’s order for 5 drinks… because he has class, dignity, and WONT ogle your breast… unlike the rest of the male clientle. Or maybe its because he’s asian, we’re black and hispanic, and ya’ll aren’t used to serving groups of multi-ethnic origins who aren’t stereotypical hoods. Either way, its cool though… we took our money elsewhere after your shady treatment. The music? GIMMEGIMMELESS GIMMELESS GIMMEGIMMELESS My sentiments exactly

Maybe it’s because I’m used to crazy dirty places but… 420 gave me a lil dirt to my taste. Great music, not boring country or too much techno or crappy sh**(if I’m allowed). Drinks are at the right price and the peeps are mixed and ready to hang. I had fun and I’m ready to go back. By Daiana Noël.

Last night, the JCC held their annual Hannuakah bash at 420 Lounge — an exciting night of latkas and well drink open bar for $ 30 cover… needless to say, we went out for sushi after. The bar itself, had I not been there for an overcrowded unfun event, is a good one, and that is why 420 still gets 4 stars. The waiter walking around collecting glasses was among the hottest men I’ve ever seen in my life, and the drinks were stiff(well, stiff as you can hope for with well drinks…) At least I got a free dreidal.
