77th Street Station

Living 30 feet from this station is amazing! Not only can I get around the city quickly with this station, but it is also fairly clean and well maintained.
As others have noted that the platform is indeed a bit narrow. There is only one central exit point on either side. These facts make this station fairly crowded during rush hour.
The station itself has its quirks, you can figure out very quickly when the crowds dissipate and work around that. I usually catch an early train (before 8) to avoid the crowds.
The crowds themselves are mostly friendly, meaning I have not had any aggressive incidents here. So overall fairly safe and maintained.

If you need to to get to Lennox Hill Hospital, this is the stop you use. There are a few decent eateries in the area, but nothing super good. Also, it’s only a few blocks to Central Park.

Oh my goodness. I had one of my top 5 worst train experiences in this station.
I should note that I’m a ½/​3 girl… but my new job on the east side necessitates that I take east side transit options once in a while.
This station is tiny, and the platform is very narrow. There were SO MANY PEOPLE on the 6 train going downtown (around 8:30 in the morning), that I got on the fourth train that came into the station. It was a three-​people-​off-​ten-​people-​on kindof day.
I felt precipitous and a little bit unsafe here… will definitely avoid initiating travel at this station in the future.

This station is clean and easy to maneuver. There is not a lot of room from the turns dial to the tracks, which isn’t bad unless it’s peak travel time because soooo many people won’t walk down to a less crowded area or stop and open up a map or pull out a camera. Not bad stuff, but be courteous enough not to block up the entry. An added bonus for walking down the platform is a snack bar. I didn’t try it, so I’m not sure about the offerings, but nice to know it is there. My favorite thing about this station is that it doesn’t stink and it’s not hot.

Very, very narrow & there’s only one exit at this stop. It’s the stop right near Lennox Hill Hospital & there is a newsstand on the platform but $ 1.25 for a bottle of water you could normally get for $ 1 is too much. You also seem to be waiting on the train for a while & no one ever seems to get out here but if you’re taking a 6, it’s okay.
If you aren’t someone needing a lot of space, you’ll be okay at this station. Be prepared to navigate around other people waiting for the train, no matter what side you’re on.

There are many, many negative things that can be said about the 6 train, but as far as the station itself goes, 77^th Street isn’t terrible. The platforms really do need to be bigger– when there’s an issue with trains during rush hour, the platforms get dangerously packed. However, the station itself is clean enough, and there’s a nifty little convenience store on the downtown platform (though they don’t seem to sell coffee, which puzzles me). Wildlife on the tracks is pretty minimal.
One bonus: the regular buskers are a good fit with the gentrified locale. They’re pleasant enough, knock out pretty good soul and Motown covers, and genuinely add to the ambiance.
Second bonus: so, a while back, Oliver Stone decided to capture a giant abortion in digital cinema and call it Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Frank Langella’s character kills himself in the 77^th Street subway station by jumping in front of an oncoming train. Note that this is bogus, and not the real 77^th Street station.

These stations are always packed, whether uptown or downtown– both stations are narrow and small! There’s interesting people watching though…
