AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9

It is the best of times and worst of times at AMC Magic.
Some staff are amazing and have great customer service.
The staff does need additional resources to make this a better venue.
More specifically, AMC needs to work harder to ensure that all guests have a safe and enjoyable experience.

No! Popcorn all on the floor by the Concession stand. Unorganized staff, since it’s a chain I was expecting the same level of service I get at the AMC in downtown Chicago where I’m from, but I found out that’s not the case.
I know the theater is in the hood, but just because you live in the hood doesn’t mean you should receive poor service. The worst part was the people IN the movie were just as bad. Talking throughout the whole film, and little kids running up and down the aisle, while the movie Concussion was playing.
Never going back. Magic Johnson should take his name off the building.

I enjoy this location. The seats are comfortable, and staff is very courteous & professional. The concessions are expensive, but I will pay, if I want a movie drink & snack. A great place to see movie!

Absolutely disgusting theater. The theater smells like piss and the workers would not clean up the theater before our showing. The best thing about tonight was we were able to get our money back from guest services. It’s a shame that this Harlem theater is so filthy!

just your run of the mill place, this is the closest place to me and since I got screwed yesterday with Bond selling out at 86^th st I came here. Seats were kinda crappy, over not bed and not crowded.

Last Sunday November 1^st I went there to see Sicario. Theater 5 reeked of urine. I had to change my seat twice so I could stand it. I love this theater and have seen many movies there. I hope they clean it up.

It’s Magic Johnson Movie Theater what more do you expect?
The food is expensive, very expensive! They also take long to prepare things such as pretzels, chicken fingers etc… The ticket pricing is very fair. I usually catch a matinée since that’s my only available time to watch a movie somewhere other than home.
I’ve never had an issue here with staff, food, filming quality and cleanliness. Everything has always been great so no complaints.

I finally did it. After 2+ years of living virtually around the corner from this place, last night my family confirmed that the movie we wanted to see, The Visit, was starting in exactly in 20 minutes at this theater and it was 5 minutes away SO LET’S GO.
We were greeted by 2 long lines, one for the ONE ticket teller out of 5 that was open, and ONE for the one automated kiosk that was working out of 3. Surprisingly, this was the most painful part and it didn’t even last that long.
Despite our being right on time, we easily found seats, dashed to the concession stand where the line moved quickly, and whaddya know, the popcorn wasn’t burned and the customer service («Would you like anything else with that» basically) was fine. Expect standard NY inflated movie theater prices; $ 13 for a large popcorn and soda combo still hurts. My mom asked for a box so we could spread out the butter distribution and got it in seconds.
In the theater, I had no complaints about cleanliness, only one person below us whipped out their cellphone to check something out in the middle of the movie, and there was nobody there that night who felt the need to have a monologue with the big screen or add their own personal soundtrack. There were also no babies. We were all strangely in sync, laughing together at the appropriate times, muttering to our comrades at all the freakish points, but never taking it overboard past the intended reaction time. For now, this theater has my seal of approval.

The quality of this theater has gone downhill year after year. Very nice staff, and awesome to have a theater close to home, but the prices are just as high as any other theater in the city and there is no reason for floors to be sticky and seats to smell like mildew and «other» things. If they would just put some effort into cleaning up, it could be a really hot spot again.

The customer service at this particular location is atrocious!
I took 200 summer camp students to this location to see Fantastic Four on August 18, 2016. I paid thousands of dollars in advance for them to watch the movie and to receive popcorn and drinks.
Upon arrival, my senior staff members were told that the group wasn’t expected, the popcorn machine wasn’t ready yet and the complimentary cups we were promised wouldn’t be provided — imagine 50 kindergartners sharing a few large cups! Then the popcorn machine fuse blew, the management (Kevin or Kelvin) disappeared and my campers were left hungry. Minutes before the end of the movie the popcorn machine worked again and they asked if we still wanted it.
This was a terrible experience for my young people and my staff. I don’t know what the internal communication structure is for the organization, but it definitely crumbled that day. I won’t be returning with campers or students to this location. Just not a good place for what they promised it would be.

This theater is pretty nice and clean. What I like about it is that the matinée is cheaper than lower Manhattan.
What I don’t like are the people that come here. They’re loud and turn on their cellphones during the movie.

went to the movie theater last Saturday and saw Ant man. Movie wasn’t bad however the people there are just ghetto and rude.

: The theater itself was dirty, floors were sticky.
: food is over priced… Extremely over priced but good.
: movie started a hour later then what it was supposed to.
: escalators weren’t working though I opted for the stairs anyway.
: people coming in and out of the seats not even using the word «excuse me»
: the people at the ticket booth having a full blown conversation about what they’re doing when she gets off.
That’s nice however your at work.
: very inattentive workers downstairs and up stairs.
Only good thing I guess is that it’s near the train station.
I will not be back.

Reviewing a movie theater seemed kind of silly to me at first, since I feel like this one is pretty consistent with all the others I’ve ever gone to. Sticky floors, but delicious movie theater popcorn. But I find myself dreading coming here, even though it’s so convenient to where I live. So I feel like it’s worth writing up why.
First of all, while I feel like lots of movie theaters are on the less-​clean side, this one seems downright dirty. Floors don’t seem to have ever been cleaned, and chairs definitely have seen better days. I find myself not wanting to touch anything, which is tough when you’re agreeing to sit in a theater for a few hours. As other patrons have mentioned, escalators are frequently not working, which isn’t the most awful thing, but it does point to a pattern of neglect in the theater.
The thing that really bugged me is that the concession counter seems to be completely non-​functional. Each time I’ve been here, the wait to buy your movie theater basics (I’m a popcorn and Junior Mints person) is unbelievable — somehow lasting at least 30 minutes or longer. Obviously not convenient if you’re trying to catch the beginning of your movie, so plan ahead! I hate that you have to give yourself an extra half hour to wait in line, but for whatever reason, you do. Must be because they only have about two people working at a single concession counter for the entire theater. Seems like not the best policy to me.
If you are coming here, try to buy your tickets ahead of time online, to avoid at least one line. And expect to be underwhelmed. If it wasn’t so convenient, I’m sure I wouldn’t be back, but I haven’t been able to move myself to the UWS location quite yet.

The line at the ticketing booth must be avoided. Unless you want to be cramped with strangers in a really small space. There are a few self-​service booths you can use, but I recommend purchasing your tickets online! Once upstairs prepare your nose for the smell of wet socks and Febreeze. This will persist throughout your stay here. If you’re not watching a really good movie that will distract you, you will be disappointed with everything about this theatre.

I wish I could’ve given this zero stars, but I’ll just give that one star because the movie itself was good.
The WORST experience I’ve ever had in a theatre. If the movie wasn’t incredibly loud and action packed, it wouldn’t have been able to drown out the hollers and screams of inappropriate and inconsiderate audience members.
I live in Harlem and will never return to this theatre. I’ll be going to the UWS or midtown.

When this movie theatre first opened years ago. I was so happy to get a movie theatre close to where I lived. Unfortunately fast forward to today and things have changed. I now go to the AMC theatre on West 84^th Street. Why do you ask? Well let me count the ways.
AMC Magic Johnson Theatre is dirty, smells, ticket counter is slow and just a general sense that no one cares about the customer. It is truly sad because it started off so right. Also I do not like the ghetto element that comes here. Yes, I said ghetto. You cannot watch a movie without some fool yapping during the movie. I did not pay admission and the overpriced cost to buy food, just so that in the end I cannot hear most of the movie. If Magic Johnson or an AMC executive is reading this. I advise you to shut down the theatre for a month while you clean house. Fire everyone from the management to the bottom. Clean house and get people who actually want to be there. Also give the place a good scrubbing.

This theater is probably the worst AMC in the city. I keep trying to give it a chance and they consistently fail to meet even the lowest of expectations. Always slow, never enough people working and pretty horrible customer service. All I will say is… this doesnt happen in the other AMC theaters I’ve been to. It’s disgraceful and a shame.
Oh. And the theaters have this weird smell… slightly like urine. Pretty gross.

This movie theatre has declined over the years and now its in need of some repair. The last time I visited this place it appeared to need cleaning in general.
The staff is not always helpful and sometimes can be rude. On the weekends it can get very crowded and noisy so watching a movie can be annoying at times. However, it is very close to all forms of transportation and if you drive parking may not be that easy.

Not the best AMC movie theatre but what do you except based on the location, customers and the staff!
This place gets 2 stars for effort, they tried to improve the neighborhood but opening up a local movie theatre however the staff and the service is horrible!
I’ve probably been to this theatre less than 5 times since it opened a few years ago and I find it’s not kept clean unlike other AMC locations.
There is always a line at the ticket counters and concession stands no matter what day and time you go and no matter how many staff members are behind the registers.
Customers…smh 10x on this one. Now I understand going to the movies can be pricey! However if you’re going to bring outside food into the theatre, the least you can do is clean up after yourself!

This theater is pretty good by AMC and NYC theater standards (which doesn’t say much unfortunately).
The major advantage of this place is the relatively cheap tickets (only $ 11 compared to the standard $ 14+ now).
Once you get your tickets and proceed to the upper levels, you see that the theater is pretty huge. The concession stand and arcade area is very large, with creepy paintings of Magic Johnson and other black luminaries looking down on the waiting area. Service was standard bang-​your-​head-​against-​the-​wall-​slow, but not as bad as a lot of the other AMCs in the city (I’m looking at you Lincoln Square).
The screens themselves are fine, with nice, spacious theaters and stadium seating. If ever I am in the Harlem area for some reason, this theater is a perfectly good choice for killing a few hours.
