Back In the Game Therapy

Monica Joshi came highly recommended to me by both of my neurologists who are top doctors at the Movement Disorder Clinic at Beth Israel (Susan B. Bressman, MD, Chair of the Mirken Department of Neurology at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and Dr. Lawrence Severt). I suffer from cervical dystonia which affects my neck muscles, causing my head to turn to one side which is very painful. This condition is very uncomfortable and makes me very self-​conscious of myself. In addition to receiving Botox injections in the affected neck muscles every 3 months (into the areas of my neck which produces muscle contractions), my doctors also prescribed a course of physical therapy to treat the symptoms of my dystonia. They didn’t steer me wrong. There are very few physical therapists who are knowledgeable and are trained to treat dystonia. Thanks goodness for Monica because she is trained to treat my condition! She really is the best in her field and she gave me optimism and hope when I had none. She works one on one with me. She has tailored a program for my needs and circumstances. From time to time, she re-​evaluates and re-​assesses my needs. She helps me increase and preserve my range of motion and mobility. She teaches me how to strengthen weakened muscles that may be under-​utilized due to my condition and keeps me aware of my posture. Monica goes over my daily routine with me and makes recommendations to improve efficiency and safety and has ideas that will make things easier for me. I am very committed in my treatment and I even do the exercises at home. All of this has been helping me tremendously, thanks to Monica!
Monica truly cares about her patients and she make you feel very comfortable. She is very devoted, down to earth and patient with you. She listens and answers all questions. I never felt rushed or like she wasn’t paying attention because we are working one on one.
The billing/​administrative staff are very polite, professional and made certain I was square with my insurance so I didn’t have any surprises. From time to time, my insurance company would delay processing my claim and the office continues to put together the information they request time after time. They took care of everything for me from A to Z.
Without any hesitation, I enthusiastically recommend Monica and her work. Thanks, Monica for a job well done!

Monica is fantastic! Back in the Game was recommended to me by my surgeon at the Hospital of Special Surgery a few weeks after a discectomy for a herniated disk. I saw Monica for about eight weeks. She is incredibly knowledgable, energetic and passionate. She taught me good exercises that helped me improve my flexibility and movement. She listened to my goals and helped me build a safe program that’s enabling me to get back to swimming, biking and working out. Her staff is fantastic too, very warm and friendly.
Overall, I thought Monica was wonderful and I have and would highly recommend her to my friends and family.

I was making some very good progress when my insurance ran out. I received a call from Back in the Game telling me that it had. I was urged to begin paying out of pocket, which is out of the question for me. At no time, was it mentioned that they would try to file an appeal. I told them I would like to file an appeal and they told me I could contact my insurance company to do so. I told them that in my past experiences the P/​T facility always handled that. I was told they would look into it and that was, I believe, on a Thursday. I called a few days later and was told that the person who was handling it was out that day but the appeal would be filed when she came in the next day. I asked what the time frame was to know whether or not it would be approved, was it a matter of weeks or months. I was told a few weeks.
Many weeks passed and I did not hear back. I called and was told they would check and then was told that it was being processed. After nine weeks passed I called my insurance company and was told that no appeal had been filed and that is what I had suspected. I never felt that they were interested in filing an appeal but were more interested in my paying out of pocket.
I also asked for a progress report to be written up by Monica, so I could present it to my doctor. In particular, Monica had mentioned a specific muscle that she felt needed additional attention and I wanted my neurologist to know about it. I called at least three times and no progress report was never presented to me.
I’m a patient that suffers with a serious, painful condition that there is no cure for and for which Monica has an expertise in. Personally, I find the actions of Back in the Game to be most unethical and disreputable. I felt like I was treated poorly and with little regard toward making any effort to help me but was just left out to dry. I don’t think this speaks well of Back in the Game or of any P/​T facility that would treat anyone in that manner.
I will no longer recommend Monica or this P/​T facility.

I had ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair surgery with Dr. Marx from HSS and am now doing my physical therapy at Back in the Game with Meghan Treder. I just had my 6 week post op and was told my knee is recovering extremely well — I have full range of motion, my gait is almost completely back to normal, and my knee is getting stronger each day. I love going to Back in the Game. The staff is extremely nice and both Meg and Monica are amazing PTs. I know I am where I am today because of their personalized treatment, their dedication to getting me better, and their vast knowledge and experience with knee surgery therapy. They use a specialized laser for healing that I think has made a really big difference as well. Each time I leave their office I feel better than when I came. I’d highly recommend anyone needing PT to go to Back in the Game!!!

Agree w/​Laurie D. Monica is a miracle worker! I have spinal stenosis and a herniated disk at L5-​S1 Through a combination of stretching, deep massage and laser therapy, Monica has done what multiple surgeries and epidural injections have failed to do — keep me pain free. She has exceptional knowledge of human anatomy and body mechanics and employs that knowledge to identify and treat the cause of discomfort before it rises to the level of pain. The fact that she’s upbeat, vivacious and a scintillating conversationalist makes treatment sessions a pleasure. I have recommended — and will continue to recommend — Monica to anyone in need of physical therapy.

Monica is a absolute miracle worker. I first went to her in 2007 for a frozen shoulder and now am seeing her for knee pain. After the first session, I could feel a significant improvement. She knows exactly what to do and is great at explaining the problem and the reason for a particular therapy or exercise. Monica has great energy and is fun to work with, but at the same time has a no-​nonsense approach when it comes to getting you healthy and functioning. I’ve been to a number of physical therapists over the past 20 years, and she is hands down the best. (And yes, she takes insurance!) If I could give her more stars, I would.
