Bad Ass Academy

Did a complimentary first class with Peter R. As my instructor. It was intense and was a wake up call to how out of shape I currently am (even though I’m extremely athletic). He kicked my butt for sure but it was so worth it. I will definitely be back!

Love this place! If your a little lost with fitness and not sure where to start, Bad Ass Academy is the place to go. The instructors there hold your hand every step of the way and make sure you’re getting the best workout. They have different classes and training for all ages, sizes and skill levels. Thank you Bad Ass Academy!

I don’t normally write reviews, but I am infuriated with the customer service at Bad Ass Academy.
Using Class Pass, I attended classes at Bad Ass Academy. I love cross fit training and thought this was great for me. I enjoyed my experience so I invited my husband to come join me for a class using their free trial. Satisfied with the training, he signed up for a membership.
My husband found another gym more fitting to the type of training he was looking for and decided to cancel the account. He went to the studio to cancel the account in person, however the front desk personnel instructed him to write a letter, mail it in, and in 30 days his membership will be cancelled, as per policy. We mailed the letter in June. Come August, my bank account was charged for the membership. He proceeded to call, and complain about the charge. Customer service notified him that the issue will be resolved and they will notify him when it was done. After a week, there was no notification, so my husband called again. Customer service invited him to come to the studio to discuss the issue. Not wanting to delay this matter any further, my husband demanded to have the account cancelled on the spot as customer service is making him go in circles to cancel his account. We then received a notice that account has been cancelled. It is now October 2015. And Bad Ass Academy has been deducting the monthly fee from my account when promised the account was cancelled.
I notified Bad Ass Academy about these charges and demanded a resolution. Hopefully, this time the customer service will improve and be more attentive on what they are promising to their customers.
If their customer service was up to par, I will give them 5 stars for the classes they hold and type of training they provide. I really enjoyed this studio, but the customer service definitely left a sour taste in my mouth.

Wish I could give BA more than 5 stars. I’ve been a member for a year now and its safe to say I’m hooked! If you’re looking for a gym that offers a variety of options as far as classes & times go then this is your spot. Every trainer here is great and has their own style of teaching which makes them unique. Every time I take a class at BA, I feel motivated and challenged. No class here is the same as the previous or the next and that’s what keeps me coming back for more. I must say, getting pushed past your limits has never felt so good. Co-​owners Anthony and Jose are both extremely welcoming and friendly. There’s no such thing as «I can’t do it» here, if you’re struggling in any way there’s no pressure. Instead, there’s someone right next to you, whether it’s an instructor or fellow member who will encourage you to keep going.
The BA staff goes out of their way to make you feel welcomed from the first class you take here. You’re not just a number but instead instructors know you on a first name basis. I feel right at home here at BA and if you haven’t already stopped by, I strongly suggest taking a trial class!

Not really sure what this guy Jorge is talking about. I have been working out and going to gyms for over 15 years… Bad Ass is the best gym aichave ever been to. Not only do they have amazing instructors. Who are all in shape (unlike some other gym instructors!!) they offer classes every hour!!! The classes are all great! I have never been to a class that I didn’t sweat my butt off!
I seriously sweat more in these classes than I did during child birth.

Want that motivation to push you over your limit? Lazy no more!
Total body workouts that incorporates all types of challenges to building functional muscles and shredding fat!
Anyone and everyone can take these classes, great way to stay fit!

This place is awesome. I joined the gym back in February 2015 when I weighed 190 lbs at 5’3 tall. I was intimidated at first because I am not in the best shape but the instructors are very smart and not once did I feel like I would hurt myself during the workout.
They are attentive and if you have any questions they are more than happy to help you. Truly love this place, I’ve lost 10 lbs. so far just working out 2 – 3 a week with them, but I feel more energetic and love the crazy workouts.
The instructors are worth every penny at this gym.
My favorite instructors are the following:
Jose Cordero (Owner) — Yes he does teach his own class, and he is amazing. I’ve only taken the «total body– boot camp» but each time I’ve taken it has been very fun and challenging. I totally recommend him if you want a cool class using the ropes/​tires and sledgehammers. HIS CLASS IS NO JOKE, YOU WILL SWEAT BUCKETS!
Isaac Santiago– awesome instructor! I usually take his spin class where he will kill you with the intensity of it. Also, I love his «total body boot camp» as he focuses a lot on toning your muscles.
Joe Garrone– Looks scary but will totally work with your skill level! He is intense! If you want a no– frills just hardcore workout you gotta try him out.
Anthony Esposito– Super nice but will make you run laps until you pass out! He is amazing for his «killer cardio class» if you want to lose fat he is your guy! Also, his cardio kick boxing classes are fun and will actually teach you about boxing and martial arts (Was super impressed as I’m a black belt with previous 10 years experience).
The only down side to this place is that it does not have showers nor does it have a water fountain. However the front desk will fill up you water bottle if you ask them to from their sink.
Overall, I’m so happy I joined this gym. My weight loss has been slow but I see how my once really flabby arms have started to tone up and shrink. I can’t wait to see where I am in a year as I’m already so happy only one month in.

I LOVE this place– the trainers are super tough, encouraging, inspiring… I know I will be in the best shape of my life if I take advantage of their flexible schedule of classes 3−4x/week– The offerings are amazingly varied– There’s something for everyone and each and every class is tailored to target specific muscle groups, cardio goals, etc– Honestly, can’t say enough good things about this place– I’m hooked! Looking forward to spending many of these upcoming cold winter months sweating my butt off at Bad Ass Academy!

Yesterday was my first time here & I’m sold on it. Woke up this morning feeling sore as hell and it was the best feeling in the world! I’ve worked out with a trainer and go to the gym about 3 – 5 times per week for the past year, I’m not advocating I’m in the best shape but as someone who does work out, this workout kicked my butt! Can’t wait to come back.

The best training facility in the WORLD!!! The instructors are all amazing, and what I love most is that each has a unique style and technique of teaching, hence you never get «used» to it, and your body is constantly changing!!! I’ve been with Badass even before they opened up this facility, we would sweat, crawl, run, jump, and practically die in muddy grass terrains and to this day, it’s been the most exhilarating experience of my life!!!
Everyone are super friendly and welcoming, the instructors are caring, knowledgeable, and most importantly they practice what they preach! They motivate, encourage, inspire, and care for every member and their progress. As soon as you walk through those doors, badass becomes a home– and trust me, you’ll never find a better one! Just do it, try a free class– I promise you won’t regret it!

This place is very good, and I strongly recommend for people who are overweight and are too shy to start on their own in the gym with weights.
Instructors are friendly and make sure you get your moneys worth, they will make you cry but than you will thank them.
Highly recommend over any cross-​fit or any other group class.

If you want to literally turn your body into an ultimate machine this is the place to be! Its great for both men and women.
The environment inside almost makes you feel like your outdoors on a rugged terrain. You’ll be working out to great music (pretty much anything thats popular in the club right now) getting pumped. Its clean and they have locker rooms for both men and women.
They have a variety of classes here. You can either pay per class or you can join and pay for a monthly membership fee and take all of the classes you’d like. I really like the instructors here. I would say thats one of the main reasons why I like it here. They are ALL fit and really care about they’re health which is important and beneficial as a client for motivation and support. The instructors WILL push you to the limit and beyond but thats what seeing good results is all about! Fatiguing those muscles to build them back up! Overall the vibe is awesome and theres also a sense of comradery as well. This place is definitely BAD ASS!

Bad Ass is AMAZING! They have the best workouts where they really make you work and sweat. You feel so accomplished and proud when you finish each class. I am obsessed with their Zumba and bootcamp classes. All of their classes are good but those 2 are my favorite! What a great idea to have a gym filled with classes! The people are great and helpful as well. I just love bad ass!

Best Cardio Work out I ever had!!! Has to be the best place in the city for fitness and cross fit. Dedicated people working there!!!

This place is packed with motivation. To the brim. There are a ton of classes everyday, and the trainers really know how to push you to the limit and keep you motivated. There is no regular routine, which keeps the exercises fun. What I really appreciate though, is that the instructors keep their eyes peeled on your form, which helps you from being injured (super important!) and prevents you from cheating. Then again, as nice as the group classes are, if you go to the morning classes, there are so few people you are basically getting personal training. Just give it a shot, no matter what your fitness level.

One of the best pure fitness & cross fitness locations in all of NYC! The trainers really care and invest in their members! If looking for a place that you will look forward to going to sweat it out and dig deep, look no further!

Awesome place; instructors are great, and push you PAST THE LIMIT. When you start going to BAA, it’s like you gain a new family — everyone there is so friendly, and not in a fake way — you genuinely feel comfortable being a part of the BA culture. But it wouldn’t mean much if the classes weren’t good. These, though, are spectacular. Jose, the FDNY 2012 Calendar Cover Boy, runs classes with a very disciplined but friendly attitude. Anthony, one of the owners, is another great instructor. And Steve is just a freak of nature. Check out his IG — Stephen2277; this guy does the most amazing things and knows how to teach them as well. All the trainers are great, though, imo. But don’t take my word for it — go there once and see for yourself. The first class is free!

Crazy. For years – decades, maybe – this address has housed an odd, cold-​looking concrete and swimming-​pool tiled bunker-​like building; rarely receiving visitors. located in a prime spot on Bay Ridge Ave next to the hookah bar. It was none other than –y’know – the recreation hall for the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. The VFW! You know what I’m talking about, right? Bingo games and raffles, and buffets and folding chairs and checkers and AM talk radio.
Wizened olé geezers with spectacles and liver spots, trembling fingers, crutches and limps; guys in Hagar checkerboard slacks and polo short-​sleeve shirts; guys with cool military camo jackets and flat-​brim ballcaps issued from the USS Missourri and the USS Wisconsin… guys who saved the world, at one time, remnants from the generation no one remembers or cares about anymore. the guys who gave us everything we enjoy and relish these days; the easy and luxurious life we all have; in part thanks to what they did back in the 1940s and 1950s. VFW.
Now – overnight – lo and behold, it is all gone. This address is now an upscale, trendy, hip, glass-​fronted, chromed-​in, extravaganza called ‘Bad Ass Academy’.
Thankfully this name is not writ large on the outdoor sign; they showed some good taste and used the initials instead.
Anyway, ‘Bad Ass Academy’ is a boot-​camp style gym; not a lot of gym equipment inside; more like just open rooms with mats. There are a lot of heavy bags for kickboxing. The place is all about instructor-​led training classes. Upstairs there are some spinning bike and some climbing ropes.
Have not checked out the locker rooms; not sure if they have any. The front desk is staffed by a couple gum-​cracking young things who seem just about able to handle the basics like, directions and phone calls. There’s also a juice bar.
In the evenings you can see the students charging around the block in the cardio classes; and the instructors standing around saying their goodbyes until the next day’s courses.
Oh well. Not sure what else to say. Its just so weird to see the olé VFW now replaced by all this… energy.
The rates are a little steep – pricier than you would imagine for a place which has no equipment. And oh yeah they want a crazy amount of info from you – photo id; doctor’s notes; character recommendation from your third grade teacher. I have to say I have not committed to this place on account these last two considerations. I’d like to give it 2.5 stars – BAA is not as ‘okay’ as it could be; but at least they’re trying. In general, I guess I would agree its a positive addition to the neighborhood.
