Barrymore Theatre

I was just here last night to watch The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, which is AMAZING, but this review is based solely on the theater. I was seated in the Orchestra section so I didn’t see the Mezzanine. The Orchestra section is pretty small so you can get a good view even in the furthest row. However, the rows are incredibly close together. I’m 5’7″ and my legs were cramped and extremely uncomfortable. I actually developed lower back pain a couple of minutes into the play. I’ve been to a few shows in New York and the seats in this theater are the most uncomfortable thus far.

Fui a ver El curioso incidente del perro a medianoche (de paso recomiendo el libro que es buenísimo) con muchas expectativas por ser mi libro preferido.
Justo un tiempo antes de viajar había una promoción y conseguimos entradas muy baratas.
Una vez en el teatro nos respetaron los códigos de entradas perfecto y no tuvimos problemas para entrar.
La fila para entrar al teatro era afuera del teatro porque tiene hall de entrada muy chico. Por suerte este proceso era rápido, porque hacia frió para esperar afuera.
Antes de entrar te revisaban el bolso/​cartera.
El teatro no es gigante pero tampoco es muy chiquito.
Yo estaba en la ULTIMA fila, del piso mas alto y veía bárbaro. El sonido también impecable.
Lo único que podría marcar como «malo» es que el baño esta en el subsuelo. Si estas en el piso de arriba como estaba yo tenia que bajar como 4 pisos por escalera y volverlos a subir en menos de 10 minutos si justo fuiste en el entreacto.
El stand de merchandasing de la obra estaba en el mismo lugar.
Para destacar, los actores salen enseguida por la puerta principal, no había mucha gente que se quedara, y fueron super simpáticos con los que si.
Otra cosa es que, si bien no hace falta porque es un teatro, tienen wifi que anda bárbaro.
También está a media cuadra del subte y todo eso, todo muy genial.
Es raro recomendar un teatro en si, como dije antes, pero vale la pena al menos ver esta obra en este lugar.

Hmm, after pondering it for a couple of seconds, I’m pretty sure the Ethel Barrymore Theatre is one of my top Broadway theaters. Or «theatres» if you will. I saw the superb musical Company a few years back and the fantastic play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-​Time not too long ago, and what I like best about the Barrymore is that it’s not a massive and overwhelming venue.
For Company, I was in the orchestra and those seats were great, and for Curious Incident, I was in the very last row of the mezzanine (because they were cheapo!), and I had no complaints. Sometimes rear mezz can feel like being in another country, but you still could see everything and hear everything and take in the moving story.
One slight con is that the bathrooms are all the way downstairs so if you are in the rear mezz and have to visit the facilities during the intermission, that could be a slog. I suggest not consuming a high volume of liquids prior to the performance.
Look for rush options, rear rear mezzanine seating, online coupon code, or buy tickets at the box office to save a few bucks/​Telecharge fees. And get some yummy dinner beforehand in Hell’s Kitchen. Enjoy the show!

Great theatre. All the seats are good. Strong sound quality. Highly recommended.

The Barrymore is one of my favorite Broadway theaters for several reasons. One: the orchestra seating is sloped enough to allow for a decent view for us less height inclined folks (I keep track of these things). Two, the theater is compact enough that even the cheapest of seats way up high are absolutely worth it no matter what show you are attending. Third, I’ve always felt that the acoustics also contribute to making every seat worthwhile, which is lovely during a spoken play. Having seen at least three plays here within the past five years, I will stand firmly by this assessment with confidence. It’s a beautiful theater with nary a bad seat in the house. The Barrymore tends to put up plays (the smaller stage and overall venue lends itself perfectly to this) and Barrymore plays often appear on TKTS discount lists so keep an eye out. Plan ahead when arriving — restrooms are in the basement and there are many many steps to get back to your seat; no one likes that late arrival jumping over people to get to their center seat!

First, as many others are saying, The Curious Incident was AMAZING! It’s one of my favorite books, and they adapted it really well.
This is a cute, smaller theater. Nice staff, great views. My one complaint would be the availability of merch after the show. There is a very small lobby, but I expected a table to be set up. No such luck. Maybe it was up a level?

This theatre is one of my favorites on Broadway! Both times I have been to this theatre I have been treated to brilliant productions, intimate sight-​lines, and a comfortable atmosphere. Both times I was here I sat in the orchestra. Once center row H and the other Row N Left on the aisle and both times they were great seats. The usher was a little mean in giving extra playbills, but it was no big deal. Great time and the current show here, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-​Time is a real gem!

This review is for the theatre, not the play: Beautiful theatre! This theatre was a tad bit smaller and more intimate than some of the other Broadway Theatres, which is a HUGE plus. Even if you sit in the last row of orchestra, it is a great view. I sat left of stage in the 2^nd row of the front mezz, and it was a great view since the overhang of the mezz section was long; therefore closer to the stage. There was also a pretty good amount of leg room. In other theatres, my knees usually knock against the seat in front of me. There is no 2^nd balcony section. As for the play: 5 Stars — A MUST see!!!

Beautiful theater with lovely architectural details and a gorgeous baroque ceiling. Saw Curious Incident here recently and really enjoyed the play and the theater. I wish they had an elevator though. The climb to mezzanine was rough due to the very steep stairs.

I’d love to go to the theater more but I have a hard time coughing up $ 200+ for mid-​level seats. I was happy to find out that lots of theaters, including the Barrymore, offer rush tickets if you’re willing to stand in line in the morning til the box office opens. At that point they offer their less-​than-​great seats at a ridiculously steep discount. If you’re willing for slightly obstructed balcony seats I highly recommend it. I can’t remember the exact price but I believe it was less than $ 50. The man working the ticket office was really nice about trying to find us the best seats and the cheapest prices.
Though they clearly weren’t the best seats, I thought it was totally fine when seeing The Curious Incident a few months ago. It’s not a big theater at all, and like many of the old spots in the city the seats are a bit creaky and cramped. But it’s all worth it for the beautiful old architecture. A visit to the Barrymore is a wonderful taste of the theater in NYC… once you go, you may be hooked!

A beautiful, small-​to-​medium-​sized theatre. Gorgeous chandelier, and good view of the entire stage from the center of the balcony. NB: The seats were very upright and firm.
One staffer was struggling to keep calm during an influx of children hyped up on the M&M factory, who were attending the Saturday matinée; however, overall, the staff seemed friendly and capable.
NB: «Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-​time» was the epitome of an impressive, innovative production paired with a heartwarming/​wrenching story. Matinée lead Taylor Trensch was perfection.

So we got to see «A Raisin in the Sun» starring Denzel Washington. We got lucky and I was able to get some tickets online for the face value of $ 125/​ticket. These same seats around Row 3 were going online for $ 1000-​$ 1250. This play was so great, I would have paid the $ 1000+ per ticket. At one point Denzel was practically less than 10 feet away from us. His acting was so great. He captured the audience and never let them go. This might be the best play we have ever seen. All of the performers were top notch. After the play was over and Denzel took a bow, he got by far the loudest ovation I have ever heard. And you know what? He deserved it!

BROADWAY! Only the A-​list of plays (in thier own right) make it here. The stage rooms are huge the audience even bigger! They get so… much. hype… and yet I don’t think it was all that special.
The Barrymore theater is really pretty (I wouldn’t say beautiful) but it does give you a feeling like you are stepping back in time. The ticket taker wasn’t nice and got annoyed when I asked her to repeat an announcement she had made she was really old and probably going through hotflashes at the moment. HUGE TIP (which I should add to my tips) they have a lot of stairs with no elevator! There were a few old people there and I felt bad for anyone of them who had to make the grueling trip up and the terrifying trip down the srairs. Seriouly I was half expecting to hear «I’ve fallen and I can’t get up» at least once. They have a really pretty chandelier oh and I feel sorry for anyone over 5“4 since there is harldy any leg space (at least in the rows futher back) oh! I went to see «A Raisin in the Sun» starring Denzel Washington. It was pretty decent.

Barrymore is an absolutely beautiful theater! I went to see «A Raisin in the Sun» here a few nights ago and was impressed with not only the play, but the theater itself. The only reason I give it less than 5-​stars is because there is not an elevator for people with disabilities. I was with my aunt, who relies on a cane to keep her balance, and helping her walk up and down the stairs to the mezzanine was pretty nerve-​wracking; especially with swarms of people around us. The chandelier was stunning and the theater was small enough that it seemed that any seat would have been a good seat. There’s a valet parking garage next door as well so parking is expensive (we had a coupon for $ 25 so it is probably more than that) but convenient nonetheless. It would be nice to have a little more leg room however. If you’re 5’8 or above, chances are your legs may feel a little cramped.

Went here tonight to see A raisin in the sun! The theatre was small but well maintained. I sat in the box, which was a compromise. I don’t like being squished and at 6’1 that’s easy in an old theatre with such small seats. The box seats are standalone and spacious but you sacrifice seeing the actors when they are right under you, which wasn’t often. The sound is incredible and I can imagine there isn’t a bad seat in the place. If you don’t like stairs it’s best you use the restroom before you go and sit on the main level. As for the play, by far the best. There’s something special about seeing Denzel play Walter live at the same venue where the play debuted 40 years ago.

Went to see A Raisin in the Sun with Denzel on a rainy Saturday night. The play itself is a personal favorite and the performances were stellar. But as to the venue itself… eh, well…
The good: We had seats in the front row of the second Mezzanine. Even from that height, the view of the stage was clear and unobstructed. Acoustics were solid, and most of what the actors were saying could be heard clearly. The occasional musical flourishes sounded crisp and clear.
The bad: Seating was rather tight and uncomfortable where we were. Maybe back when the theater was originally built people just didn’t come as tall or as wide but for the 2014 crowd it felt cramped. Raisin made 1.1 million the first full week… take some of the cut of the profits and do some seating upgrades! The only bathrooms in the place being downstairs was a negative as well.
The ugly: Staff was professional for the most part in guiding people to their seats and making sure everyone was seated in time for the show to start. However, there were some uncomfortable moments in customer service as well.
Example: an elderly woman who clearly had trouble walking was rushed to her seat. I don’t think she (and her cane) was up for a pre-​show sprint. Also, another elderly patron was admonished for bringing a small plastic cup of water to his seat (no drinks or food in the theatre allowed). Maybe he needed em for his pills, it certainly wasn’t enough to quench a thirst or cause a spill though.
Finally, I get that you don’t allow photos or video of the performance, but if my wife and her girlfriends want to take a pic of themselves (not the venue or the actors) on a phone with no flash 15 minutes before the show starts, what’s the harm? Especially since a number of others in the place are doing the same without being singled out for it.
In summary, an adequate place to watch a wonderful show. But some of the theater’s policies could be relaxed a bit. I understand you have rules in place to make sure things run smoothly… but there is always the human factor to consider as well. If the play taught us anything, it’s to respect our elders!

Saw Raisin in the Sun with Denzel Washington and this theater has fantastic acoustics. Our seats were in the balcony and were great. The staff wasn’t the friendliest. Especially to the woman whose cell phone kept going off but I can’t say I was mad about that.

Hubby and I had the pleasure of seeing Macbeth here! The play itself was terrific and amazing unfortunately we saw the last performance. I mean it’s good for us that we saw it but unfortunate because I would recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.
The theatre itself is very nice, it’s beautiful inside. The bathrooms are clean and there’s a lot of stalls in the lower level bathroom which makes the ladies room line move real fast. The theatre is very small so seating can get tight, despite the tight seating I was pretty comfortable. We sat in the second row on the left side of the orchestra for Macbeth which was really awesome because we got to see Alan Cumming up close when he was performing on the part of the stage near the orchestra. Some of the performance view was obstructed by the set in this seat but it was a small part of the performance so it wasn’t too bad.
Not bad for my first play besides phantom in 3 years lol.

MacBeth. Awesome.
