Barry’s Bootcamp NoHo

Phenomenal workout.
Took my first workout at Barry’s and it was great. I really couldn’t have asked for anything more. I went to a Monday class which is abs and arms day. I really like the fact that they stick to the same régime all day. The workout is broken down into 25 minutes on the treadmill and 25 minutes on the floor. The time is divided into intervals so you will be going back and forth. Don’t worry the treadmill is only a few steps away from your mat. Everyone is assigned to a treadmill and a floor space as well so there is no confusion or scrambling. The instructor pumped some good music which had me motivated to work harder. The workout itself was amazing. Implementing running like that is a major plus for me since Im into running. It is so healthy to add running to your workout I think the idea is brilliant. The floor exercises that he had us do pinpointed every single muscle arm & ab muscle. Two days later writing this I am still sore. The exercises were amazing and if I can continue to go I think the results would be great. Yes this place is expensive and the crowd is pretty unfriendly but the workout is worth it and I plan on buying a package in the near future.

I won a week of free week of Barry’s classes via Über and it was an overall awesome experience.
Location-​wise, I preferred Noho over the Tribeca spot, even though it was further away from my home & office. Superficially, the locker rooms were much cleaner and there were more showers. The Noho facility definitely seemed much more frequented, however, I got off the wait-​list twice when signing up for classes.
My favorite trainers by far were Rebecca K. and Ken F. Both had incredibly positive attitudes and paid attention to form throughout the class. I’m personally not motivated by someone screaming in my face, so their instruction style vibe’d well me.
Hand-​down the dynamic mode on the treadmill is the sweetest thing ever!

Probably my favorite location out of all the Barry’s in the city. The layout is great and compared to the others, NoHo is by far the cleanest location with new-​ish/​functioning equipment. Most of the instructors teach at all the locations and my favorites are Layla, Matt N. and Mike E.
When I first started coming to Barry’s as an exercise newbie a year ago through ClassPass, I thought the classes were great but as I begun frequenting other boutique fitness studios, my love for Barry’s faded.
Though some of the instructors are great and attentive, others could care less and compared to other studios, there is a serious lack of attention to form (instructors rarely correct anything… So there is a high chance of injury if you don’t know how to properly perform an exercise) and there are rarely any options for modification.
For the steep price, I expect the instructors to be attentive to make sure that everyone gets a good workout by performing moves correctly (bad form won’t get you anywhere). For now, I’m sticking to my favorite instructors.

Barry’s is a great workout for high intensity training. I’m sure I burned a ton of calories. The music is turned up, the lighting is great, it’s just a really fun, engaging way to work out.
The studio here is nice and big, super clean, the locker rooms are a decent size with nice sized lockers (the electronic kind). They have Malin & Goetz in the bathroom, with body wash and facewash… it smells amazing in there.
The workout is killer, you switch from running on the treadmill at various speeds and inclines to getting your butt kicked in bootcamp style lifts and movements on the floor. You rotate back and forth to keep your heart rate up. I had done Orange Theory for about a year, so was familiar with this type of training, but I’d imagine if it was your first time, it’s kind of confusing. The instructor didn’t know I had any experience, so I could have been totally new to this and there wasn’t really any personal time spent with me. Just «incline, push here» and «speed, push here» — but that was totally it.
I felt like the staff was a bit apathetic. I was hoping someone would walk me into the locker room and just do a quick 2 minute lap around the place with me. It’s small so it’s not like you can’t figure it out — but I think a little more attention makes for a great customer experience — esp when paying over $ 30/​class. I’ll definitely be back to get butt kicked!

Very spacious well up-​kept studio. I read reviews prior coming to class and other reviewers mentioned you can request working out on the floor first? I was a bit confused what to expect cause it seemed like we were separated into two groups (the people on the treadmill and those on the floor). I took the Hard Core Abs class.
The treadmill workout was good, although I’m not too crazy about the intervals (running at a ⁹⁄₁₀ pace for a minute), then inclining from 5 to 10?! I consider myself in pretty good shape and i could not run at an incline of 10 without feeling like I was about to fall off. After 10 minutes of running, we switch to the floor workouts where we focused on abs. The first portion of the floor workout consisted of weights — basic crunches, superman planks, etc. Then back to the treadmill for another 8 minutes of intense running. Then back to the floor where we used medicine balls.
I was very confused what to do and found it hard to see the instructor as he was mostly by the door and most the students were on that side of the room. The class went by very fast and in no time, we were done. I’m not sure if this is the place I would come for cardio since I get most of my cardio workout at Soulcycle and my strength training elsewhere. I’m sure it’s a great workout and see why people like it, but it may not be for me.
Also, it appears that alot of the lockers by the reception area didn’t work. As i was sitting there waiting for class to start, I saw people getting fussy with the locker situation. May want to fix that! :)

I’ve never been particularly athletic, coordinated or into group fitness classes. When my friend coerced me into giving Barry’s Bootcamp a try I initially felt extremely out of place and intimidated by the glamazon clientele, high prices and high intensity workouts. I limped along during my first workout and felt sore for days afterward…
In a moment of inspiration or craziness I decided that it was time to get serious about getting into better shape and signed up for a monthly silver membership. I justified the price by committing to going every day. Initially it was torture, but very quickly I felt my body and fitness level changing. The high price (and additional fee they change you if you bail on a class) kept me coming back, and I became addicted to the changes I was seeing in my performance and physique.
I’m still uncoordinated, and struggle to hit the «advanced» treadmill speeds, but the only thing that I regret is that I didn’t start coming sooner. Before Barry’s I’d pretty much given up on the idea that my body could go through any kind of transformative change. Six months later I’m still shelling out for the monthly membership and going 5 – 6 times a week.
I’ve given Barry’s five stars for overall impact. That said, the cons are that it’s very expensive and their locker rooms leave something to be desired at every location. There are always too few showers, lockers and functioning hair dryers and outlets given the price.
My advice to the wary is, «just sign up». I was in terrible shape when I started, but if you stick with it, that will quickly change.

Just left Barrys boot camp! I asked to have my ass kicked and Courtney Delivered! His class was fierce! Everything was amazing, his attention to detail for each and every client, the play list, motivation, and his determination for each and every participant to finish was awesome! When you walk in the energy was on point, from the staff to the members. They have a full smoothie bar, provide towels, and the locker room at Malin and Goetz products. Def check it out!

I’ve only been here once, but found the experience very consistent with my experience at the Barry’s SF location. It’s probably one of the best studio workouts I’ve had and I prefer it over SoulCycle. The workout is comprised of half the time on the treadmill doing a mix of jog/​run/​spring/​resistance and the other half doing some sort of strength training in a dark room with loud music blasting. Studio and locker room space is very spacious and clean. There’s plenty of space to maneuver while waiting for the previous class to end (can be an issue at Barry’s SF) and showers are very luxurious with rock «tiling». There’s about 4 – 5 showers with Malin + Goetz face wash, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. Never heard of this brand before, but did a quick google search and is apparently a pretty high-​end product.
The only downside is that if you’re on either treadmill 4 or 5, there’s a big glass column in between these two treadmills so spacing is a little tricky when the instructor wants you to do, say, pushups on the ground while your feet are still on the treadmill. Also my treadmill #5 was touching treadmill #6, which had a very intense runner so at times I felt my treadmill was shaking a bit from #6’s vibrations. Oh, and it’s very pricey, $ 34 for drop-​in, but hey, health is wealth, right?

Matt/​Layla/​Niv/​Mike — I effing love all of you.
People listen up — yes, you pay $$$$ for a class — it’s worth every single cent. Your body changes, your mindset changes — it’s like a big group of friends sweating and cursing and driving every inch of their being together to become something greater.
So WHAT if you have to wait for a shower — deal with it.
Haters on these other reviews… ignore it.

My legs are sore from my Total Body workout at Barry’s yesterday. And I love it. I’ve been trying to book a class here through classpass, but it seemed the only available times were at 5am or during the work week. Luckily for me, I booked a 315 class on a Sunday in NoHo. Random time, but I was excited.
I’d say about half the class were very buff men. With another ten percent being regularly buff men. Was excited and intimated at the same time.
The class itself is an hour long and split between a treadmill and the floor. For «total body» days, the weights are dumbbells and medicine balls, and most of the exercises are done from a step.
I love to run, but usually do it outside. Was a little uncomfortable running at full speed on a treadmill. Felt like I would fall off. I feel more secure being clipped Into a spin bike or lifting weights on The floor. Anyway, for the treadmill portion, the instructor told us what incline and speed to go to for a HIIT workout
The weights part was my favorite. It’s worth mentioning that previously mentioned buff me skipped out on the treadmill portion and did twice as many weight sections. Perhaps I should take notes. Using Dumbbells, we did many classic, as well as original weight weight lifting series, as well as one core section with a medicine ball. Was pretty tough
The locker rooms were amazing. After being all gross from class, the showers had face wash, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash from some fancy spa. All smelled really good and were scented in herbs such as mint and cilantro. Very interesting. The NoHo also had a juice bar to really complete the experience o want to go back!

If you want to change your body and see results you come to Barry’s at Noho.
Amazing workout that will challenge your every fiber. Like any workout, you get what you give so go in to crush it! And for all beginners, work your level! It works, it is fun and you will get where you want to be.

Front desk staff always friendly and accommodating. Do not be needy there, go to Equinox for that. Get there on time, do your thing, find the locker room, (really not that hard, there are only 3 doors in that place) and leave with a new set of abs, arms and butt!

I used to be super skeptical about Barry’s, partially because of the ‘celeb fave’ angle but after taking a few classes (through Classpass), I’m kinda hooked in a love/​hate sort of way.
The classes are intense and very effective. They can def be intimidating for those who aren’t in as great shape, especially there are a lot of regulars that attend and the trainers really push/​encourage you to get out of your comfort zone and work a little harder than normal, but they also provide modified instructions to meet your own level of fitness. For some reason, I’ve often ended up in Matt N’s class (super chill, good playlist, very motivating) but Noah had me cracking up with his jokes the whole time — he also does adjustments. If you don’t have a sense of humor, don’t take Noah’s class.
I do agree that the check-​in staff can be a bit apathetic — on my first visit I made it known this was my very first Barry’s class ever and was simply told «Treadmill X» and sent off to find my own way, which was confusing, since I had been told by friends that you have the option to start with an assigned floor or treadmill — and you switch places throughout the class. I don’t know if the front desk just assumes everyone already knows all of this or figures the trainer will sort people out, or just doesn’t care… I had to ask where the locker rooms where (it wasn’t super obvious due to the crowd of people in the lobby). If you prefer to focus more on floor exercises, make sure you tell the staff otherwise it seems they’ll just automatically stick you on a treadmill.
Although the locker room is a bit small, there usually isn’t a super long wait for the showers when I go (the toilets are another matter!). The facilities are super clean. The lockers could be better maintained — many are often out of order.

CLASS:
My butt&legs day wouldn’t be the same without Noah’s class… it so is that the time slot is blocked off on my calendar every week.
It’s my least favorite muscle group to work so definitely helps having someone tell me to squat, lunge, jump, do burpees, say there’s no sitting down on leg day (lol), and so on.
Pros: LOVE that he keeps the movements simple such as variations of squats and lunges as well as plyos (I’m not going for cirque du soleil, so simple and effective work for me). Also gotta love the hip-​hop and house beats on the playlist.
Cons: his charming smile and high fives in the beginning of class fools you… he shows no mercy on leg day j/​k
STUDIO:
Love this location mainly bc it’s super convenient for me and I just really like the layout.
I read a few reviews which said the staff wasn’t friendly and I couldn’t agree less. From the front desk to the smoothie bar, they’ve always been super nice to me… but then again, I’m not one of those people that require a red carpet.
Price wise, I think it’s reasonable and average for studio classes in the city. It’s a great workout, so I don’t mind paying for classes every week.

I feel bad not giving Barry’s another star because I think it’s a great workout but at that price point I think their service could be much better.
The first time you walk in, noone bothers showing you where the lockers are. Also there is a lot of difference between the instructors. Niv for example is a very intense work-​out but I trained with him for a month and he never bothered adjusting my posture during weights sessions. Other instructors were much warmer and more helpful.
Also for $ 9 their smoothies are pretty disappointing.

2. The actual work out room is HOT, the must have it set that way. But the room is dark and lit by red light and the music is kind of loud (not my kind of thing)
3. If you are not a runner (like myself) this isn’t for you!!! Running is one thing, running on an incline, I almost died lol.
4. I Left early because i felt really dizzy and when i walked out i was laughed at by the receptionists abd something to the effect of «i knew someone would leave but she only lasted half the class»

First time at B’s this weekend, and a big fan! I’m a runner and training for a marathon, so the treadmill wasn’t as difficult as the floor exercises. Did a full body workout, and definitely sore in all the right places! Trainer was awesome — very upbeat and perfectly timed each circuit.
Unfortunately — front staff was not so kind, a bit rude. Since it was my first time — I was put off by the lack of a sincere «welcome» to my first experience. I don’t need a red carpet, but let’s tame the attitude, especially for newbies that most likely frequent, competitor neighbors — MHRC, Soul Cycle and all gyms within a 2-​block distance.

Just like I’ve been told, my first class at Barry’s was killer. Super high intensity and a great workout. For me personally, it might be a little too much. I think the treadmill intensity and approach at Mile High Run club is better — pushes you but doesn’t kill you and gives you an option to cater to your level. But Barry’s overall, is def. a great workout, I would go back but I’m not IN LOVE with Barry’s Bootcamp… yet…Also, it was a little bro’y for me but hey, maybe I’ll think differently about it my next class.

I finally got into a class here via ClassPass. I signed up for Arms and Abs (this is their Monday class) and mentally prepared myself as I’ve heard this class is hard! I started on the treadmill and the warm up was fine but THEN we were going up a hill and the instructor said to set the incline at FOURTEEN PERCENT! We were to be going anywhere from 7.0−9.0 on the treadmill during this time. Are you crazy? I could not keep up. I consider myself in shape but I’m no elite athlete so this class was VERY tough for me. I did the best I could, telling myself that this was my first class and I can tone it down a bit if I have to. Once that torture was over, we moved to the floor for the strength portion.
We did several different exercises with resistance bands and weights and later did just a little bit of ab work, which I was fine with because I hate ab work. The class basically alternates between treadmill and floor which was great because you never feel too bored or overworked. I mean I DID feel overworked, but just because I’m a newbie :) I felt the class went by fairly quickly and although I felt like death after, I felt like I accomplished something.
The locker room is average size with a few showers and toiletries available. The one thing I really loved was their huge lockers! I didn’t have any issue stuffing all my things inside and praying it closed like I do in other studios. The locks are electronic so no need to bring your own. Water is available to purchase or you can ask the juice bar employee to fill up your own bottle.
I can’t recall my instructor’s name, but I made sure to tell him I was new and he gave everyone a high five at the end which was encouraging! If I can get in again through CP, I will be back to Barry’s!

Brace yourself. Find courage and inner strength. You’re gonna need to mentally prepare yourself for an hour of intense training. Work your body in places you have never imagined it was possible before.
I’ve had the pleasure of taking a class the first time last year. This is not recommended for someone who don’t frequent the gym regularly.
However, you will definitely get your money’s worth — cardio and light weight training (toning).
The results — I was hungry by the time the session was over! Definitely will go back but not anytime soon :)

First of all… the new space is great. Situated a short walk down from the 6 train Astor Place stop. All the instructors are great. So if you are unfamiliar with Barry’s it’s treadmill work and weights. I for one hate running but I need it in my life, so I must suck it up and go to Barry’s. A typical class follows the following format: treadmill for 15, weights for 15, tread again, weights again. Some instructors have 3 rotations which I like because the variety takes my mind off the pain. They have shakes available to order after your workout. If you don’t feel like running, sign up for double weights, but don’t be fooled, depending on the instructor that can totally kick your behind as well. Give it a go, but it sho’ ain’t for those new to exercise and fitness. You will be passed out somewhere after a Barry’s class.
