Delicious German food beyond the cliché of what German food is supposed to be. Still a bit meat-heavy, sadly. Beautiful atmosphere and great service, somewhat pricey though. But definitely recommend!

Same thing again, years later. Quality hasn’t changed. Yum! Lovely and prompt service as well. Granted it was lunch time and not very busy. :)

Took my partner for New Years Eve dinner and it was such an excellent meal! It was a prefixed menu but they had all my favorites. A great choice!

The place is kinda cool for that area for an after work catch up with friends but a note to the owner: your manager on Tuesday night will ruin your business! The place was empty when we got there. Maybe only one table in dining area was taken and the table next to the door was also open. I had a group of 8 of thirsty people on my group(read: waiting to order multiple rounds of drink) and the manager had the nerve to brush me off with the worst attitude telling me he can accommodate us at first well eventually he did but still I would never go back there and will for ever hold off my colleagues and friends to go there who work in major banks around the area… To Unilocal people: if you want to take your work team there think twice +their Happy hour is not that great and the drinks are so so add the bad attitude of the manager then it’s not a place you want to take your business!

Delicious food in a very cool setting(when I can’t identify a single artist in the posters on the walls, I usually just assume it’s too hip for me). We showed up here kinda late but the staff was great about getting us promptly fed and watered. The duck spätzle were excellent: creamy but still toothsome. The weisswurßt and pretzel was solid too. They have a cool selection of somewhat lesser known beers. My cocktail was so-so, nothing to write home about. I was impressed by the ambiance of this place: lit candles everywhere, tall ceilings, curved walls covered in sleek posters. We snuggled up in a corner and watched a game that was unobtrusively playing over the bar. It wasn’t too busy, and everyone was savoring the last minutes of the evening. I carry a very fond memory of this place.

Highlights: Duck Spätzle is a must get omg. It was nicely cooked and very creamy without being heavy at all. Wild Striped Bass was very good too. I loved the truffle sauce.

First of all I have to say I am from Austria so if you go into an Austrian Restaurant somewhere out of Austria it is always tricky :) But here we felt like home!!! You walk in and you are in the middle of Viennese coffee store. We live already more than 3 years in the states so Austrian food is not on our daily diet. We actually choose to have our wedding dinner there :) getting married on our own in NYC, we wanted to have a least Austrian food and it was just perfect. We did Wienerschnitzel and Tafelspitz and Frittatensuppe and Salzburger Nockerl as dessert. Everything was excellent. Sooo if you miss Austrian food GOTHERE.

The last time I had Austrian food was actually in Vienna years ago, so was excited to try it again in nyc last night for dinner. Started with a can of Almdudler(tastes like ginger ale but not as sweet). I remember loving weiner schnitzel, so ordered that and substituted the side for spaetzle($ 2 extra) — both were delish! The pork weiner schnitzel came with lingonberry compote that sweetly complemented the tender, breaded pork. The spaetzle I couldn’t stop eating either, buttery carb-y goodness. We sampled almost all the dessert options. Would definitely recommend the Kaiserschmarrn, a plate of fluffy, bite-sized pancakes filled with apples. The Salzberger Nockerl was great as well, a light and sweet soufflé. Cool euro vibe with art and film posters lining the walls and an old-school playlist. Will definitely be back to get my Austrian food fix!

Excellent wait staff and good beers! Thats it everything else is a downhill from there. Oh no wait, the chicken wings were good too(so German/Austrian that is, right? ;)) The food was bland and lacked any kind of flavor. The salt seemed to be on the lower side and there was nothing in a dish that stood out. We had the beef shoulder and it comes with a side of potato and creamy spinach. Nothing extra ordinary. Not worth repeating. Also the health certificate which was cleverly hidden behind a shrub read B.

food was delicious. i mean, wtf how can this be so good. normally, food this heavy is only tasty during the colder months but not the case. i had the pork weiner schnitzel. sides were great. my companion had the heavier pork jäger schnitzel which was also really good — if you like cream sauce. one of the things i like about this place is that there is NEVER a wait for a table and you can just waltz right in without a reservation. service was good, in that job was done. only reason why it’s not a 5 star is because for the comfort food that it is, it’s over priced.

I give it four stars because I’m never sure how good a place needs to be for a reward of five stars. But this place was really good. The spatlze that comes with the Pork Jäger Snitzle is the best I’ve ever tasted. Super yummy! And the chives added such great flavor. Very relaxed soothing environment. Great music. A little pricy but definitely worth it. Friendly and helpful staff. There are heavy blue curtains when you walk in that add a touch of mystery as well as privacy. Great place to eat if you’re ever close by. The apple strudel is a must try! It’s like an apple pie but I just really liked what I got here.

The initial mission was to satisfy a craving for Sachertorte once we realized Café Sabarsky was closed(apparently they’re always closed on Tuesdays). Café Sabarsky, in our view, already served as close as we’d ever had to the real thing in Vienna. We didn’t realize, however, that Blaue Gans was run by the same executive chef, Kurt Gutenbrunner — but it’s no surprise considering the quality of the Sachertorte there was as good. All that said, Sachertorte is a minor reason you should give Blaue Gans a try: give the Chestnut Soup a try and you’ll be sold. We still have a lot to try, so this review will surely be updated — but it’s well-worth the trip to Manhattan. The environment at Blaue Gans is also great — never annoyingly noisy, patrons enjoy their meals in privacy. Blaue Gans is exceptionally accessible for such a great gem of a restaurant. The artwork at the restaurant is great — very iconic — and it’s one of the few restaurants in this league to be open late. It’s a great place to escape after a long day of business to have a top-notch meal you’d normally travel across a pond for.

Had an enjoyable meal here on a Friday night. I believe this was my first time having an Austrian/German meal at a restaurant. Because I came for a friend’s gathering I had no expectation of what the food would be like, I always just though German food were mostly sausages and sauerkrauts. Glad to be proven wrong :) Their Pork Schnitzel are definitely well deserve being the most popular item on the menu. The meat was really tender unlike pork chops I usually have I have no idea how they made it so soft and delicious. Although I only tried a few bites from friends entrée that was my favourite dish for sure. The Herbed Spätzle was really good as well. I didn’t know it was egg noodle pasta until I looked it up after I got home. Quite a delicious surprise. My own entrée the Venison Goulash was good but definitely thought I should’ve gotten the schnitzel. The meat was tender but I thought it was a bit too salty. We ended up staying for desserts and tea as well and friend and I shared Salzburger Nockerl which I thought were really good. I enjoyed the creaminess of the filling and the fact the outer shell wasn’t flaky unlike cream puffs, although I probably would’ve wish they came with chocolate or strawberry instead… But this is a traditional Austrian dessert so it was quite a good and educational experience :) Prices were bit higher than I wanted but for the services and food we got I think it was worth it. They were really friendly and attentive to our needs despite us staying for over 3 hours for dinner. By the time we left there was only maybe few other table still eating so I really appreciated they made our time here very enjoyable. I will reserve this restaurant for the more special occasion events :) Really glad I had a such pleasant experience first time trying Austrian food.

Ich liebe Blaue Gans! Blaue Gans has the best German food in the city and I would know, because I’ve been to nearly all of them. The décor is a collection of German concert and art event posters mixed with pop art posters. It would describe it as a trendy 1980s bunker… I guess you have to see it. Whatever it is, it works. The menu is seasonal so there’s always a new treat each time I go. Two things I always get are the chicken wings and the spaetzle. The spaetzle blows the competition out of the water. My girlfriend and I typically share our entrees, with me getting a schnitzel and her getting a pork dish. Their schnitzel is done to perfection… light and flavorful… and big. We also loved the Wurstknödel but I haven’t seen it on the menu in a while. Their beer selection is great and authentic. I definitely recommend this place if you are in the mood for German food or just want to try something new.

While staying with a friend in the area and generally inclined to German food given the impending Oktoberfest, my friend and I visited Blaue Gans, the Kurt Gutenbrunner creation, on a Saturday night. The design and style of this restaurant with old movie and art posters plastered on the walls that truly support the drone of 80’s music was a nice Tribeca touch and makes Blaue Gans more for a dinner between friends than a romantic date. We started the visit with weak cocktails that had a heavy emphasis on the soda water and a drop of alcohol. Despite disappointment over the weak drinks, I enjoyed the chicken holstein schnitzel. The schnitzel was heavy, with an emphasis on butter, but overall it was a nice meal complete with fingerling potatoes. I was definitely full afterwards. Supplemented with beer after dinner, the meal definitely left a heavy feeling in my stomach, ultimately leading to an unpleasant post-dinner experience. I probably will not be running back to Blaue Gans, but I would definitely consider it if I’m in the neighborhood and looking for German specialties.

I wasn’t sure whether this is their permanent situation or not but I was there last Wed and they had no AC on. Mind you it was close to 90f outside. Maybe they want to create a beer garten experience but it wasn’t working for me. I came late and my girlfriends all decided to stay so we did. Portion size is generous. I have the veal wiener snitzel with cucumber salad. It was fried perfectly and the cucumber salad provided a nice balance to the heavy dish. I wish they add a little bit of sauce since it was a very dry dish for me. I couldn’t finish since it was so hot inside. Service was decent. They brought out the wrong order once for my friend but fixed it with no question no sorry either. There may not be a lot of options for this area but regardless I am not rushing back anytime soon. Maybe next time they sort out the AC issue or come back in winter time.

Never in my life did I think I would be such a fan of Austrian food. Although the cuisine includes a lot of pork, it reminded me a lot of my grandmother’s homemade Jewish cooking. I started with a medium glass(which was actually a pretty large pint) of Weihenstephaner Beer. It reminded me of a blue moon. Light but extremely flavorful. My friend and I split a pot of the steamed mussels with spicy lobster broth. It was a large portion and the mussels were nicely circled on the plate. The broth was not too spicy. For my entrée, I ordered the Pork Jäger Schnitzel) mushrooms, bacon & fresh herbed spätzle). Oh my god. The best dish I’ve had in a LONG time. The schnitzel was cooked perfectly and the bacon pieces were extremely thick and juicy. The spätzle is a cross between gnocchi and mac and cheese. Amazing. We ended with the Sachertorte(Viennese dark chocolate cake, apricot, schlag). This just wasn’t my style. The cake was a little too light, it lacked the richness that a chocolate cake should have. Service was good. The restaurant is extremely modest especially considering its in Tribeca. I would definitely come back here to get my wiener schnitzel on!

Schnitzel in NYC? Selbstgemachte Sacher Torte in NYC? Currywurst in NYC?

Excellent place to get good German beer. They have a good(but not overwhelming) selection accompanied by traditional German delicacies. What to start with? Guten Tag! Zwei Bier Bitte! We tried around a dozen beers which come in several sizes. Based on our choices, the friendly German waitress gave us some suggestions. We got some food too. Sausages were quite good, so was the German sauerkraut. But the schnitzels(beef & chicken) were not that great: almost no meat and too much breading. So my recommendation is skip the schnitzels and stick to awesome sausages or other appetizers. We loved the service and ambiance. The crowd is a bit on the older side, maybe 40s give or take(hello Tribeca). Will be back in the fall!
