Bruce Lowenstein, DVM

I have 3 indoor cats and have always had cats in the 30 years i’ve lived in the city.
So you can imagine, i have quite a long experience with Manhattan vets.
I’ve had 2 encounters with Dr Lowenstein.
The first one was a few years ago when the stray i had taken in one year earlier was dying and needed to be put to sleep. I didn’t have the heart to lug him in a cab, he was so weak.
So i called Dr Lowenstein. He was compassionate and caring during this difficult time.
The second time was a few weeks ago. One of my cats was having explosive diarrhea and was dangerously loosing weight. The situation had been going on for a while, with ups and downs. The diagnosis had never been made formally, but we had done all the blood tests and all was normal.
The diagnosis was either allergies or IBD (irritable bowel disease). She needed prescription food. I was unable to get in touch with my regular vet, after multiple attempts over a 2 weeks period.
Which i still can’t believe happened. Vets are overwhelmed, and greedy.
I am so disappointed that next Spring (when my cats’ yearly visit to the vet is due), i will call Dr Lowenstein to come to my home.
I was rather desperate when i called Dr Lowenstein. He saved my cat’s life.
He was able – over the phone, because he was homebound at the time-​to get me the prescription food i needed. The next day, my cat was already better.
What was so unique and priceless – in a city where everybody is so busy– is that Dr Lowenstein was in no hurry. He genuinely wanted to help, he cared.
And this, to a pet owner, is invaluable.

Our sweet 16yo doxie mix Rosie had lymphoma, and the aggressive treatments City Vet wanted us to continue, were no longer appropriate, & their staff was incredibly judgemental, callous & rude.
I decided to never take her there again, & called Dr Lowenstein, asking for home & palliative care… That was the best call I ever made!
From that point forward Dr L stayed on top of her case, making sure she had the necessary meds to keep her comfortable and stable.
She turned around & felt great for awhile! Our final gift! Ultimately the cancer was taking her from us. Dr L was SO patient, having several long conversations with my husband & I about our choices. We never felt judged. He supported us through the entire heartbreaking experience, & came over immediately when that awful moment arrived that all pet owners dread. She suddenly turned for the worse, so he made our Rosie super comfortable… never rushed us… and then helped her cross the Rainbow Bridge with the comfort, dignity & respect that she deserved. All in the familiar privacy of our home.
I could go on & on about Dr. Lowenstein’s caring nature, professionalism, & willingness to go the extra mile.
He has also seen & cared for our border collie, Fletcher & new puppy Chloe. He’s helped both of them out on several occasions & communicates with our vet hospital in emergencies & surgeries.

Dr. Bruce Lowenstein is as good a practitioner as I ever could have asked for. He is patient and kind and has a wonderful way with animals. I am a new cat owner and Dr. Bruce has walked me through everything I need to know about how to take the best care of my boy Leo and we could not be more pleased to be in his care. Dr. Bruce is a gem and service like this is not easy to find.

Dr. Lowenstein was the best. I have 2 cats that are at best «prickly». The Doctor was great with them. I couldn’t have been more surprised that he could corrall them for shots and exams right in my living room. He is also one of the nicest person you would ever want to meet. 5 stars in my book. He will be my «go to vet»

Dr. Bruce Lowenstein’s passion for helping animals and their owners is demonstrated through his dedication to his work. This is a man who loves his job. Dr. Lowenstein has been my pets’ veterinarian for three years and has seen us through some pretty traumatic, tragic, and peculiar circumstances all with a great deal of compassion and expertise.
When my eighteen year old chihuahua/​pug, Garbanzo Bean, consumed a half pound of pure chocolate Dr. Lowenstein was the first call I made. He directed me to animal poison control and later to the emergency clinic. I called him after speaking with poison control, twice from the emergency room, and just about every day thereafter during G. Bean’s recovery. He also kept in contact with the emergency clinic during his three days in the ICU to monitor his progress and keep tab on the doctors. For all this support, time and expertise he was compensated not at all. Dr. Lowenstein spent literally hours on the phone with me just because of his regard and concern for my pet.
When later I found myself without a pet Dr. Lowenstein freely offered to accompany me to the government run animal shelter to pick out a cat. This shelter is a pretty grim and depressing place and he wanted to ensure that I didn’t take home a sick animal. He was able to ask the shelter employees pertinent questions and give the cat a brief physical before I adopted him and took him home.
The time I made an excursion to the shelter without the company of Dr. Lowenstein I ended up adopting an aged, toothless, underweight Chihuahua with huge tumor like growths (yes, I’m a sucker). After admonishing me for not taking him with me to the shelter he promptly arrived to give the poor dog an examination and later made dozens of calls to clinics and surgeons around the city looking for just the care the dog needed. He was able to pull some strings with a clinic he interned for during his schooling and today, Pepino the chihuahua, is a healthy and thriving (although still toothless).
Other than Dr. Lowenstein being a great veterinarian and an outstanding human being why bother packing up a terrified and sick animal and crating it across the city when a qualified and compassionate professional can come directly to your door?

I cannot thank Dr. Bruce enough for bringing the sanity and compassion back to veterinary care for pets and owners alike. I heard about his house call appointments through a good friend of mine. She referred me when I told her I was nervous to take my elderly gent, Reggie, a large domestic short hair cat, out to the vet. He gets so nervous in the street with the noise! I cannot stand to stress him out so much, and that is before the doctor’s office.
When I called Dr. Bruce, my cat was critical, he needed a kitty ER stat and Dr. Bruce calmly explained how urgent it was. He had not even met us yet! Once Reggie was home and recovering Dr. Bruce came and checked on him and saved his life yet again. I was reticent to go down a path I had with another elderly cat, one where vet after vet urged me to force care on an animal that should have been put down at an earlier time. I did not want to make that same mistake. Dr. Bruce understood my fears, but also spent the TIME to discuss with me how I could find out if this was something I could humanely treat or if I needed to make a decision about Reggie’s future. Once reassured that we were making the best possible step we forged ahead and found Reggie had a problem which could be controlled with meds and he would be a happy, healthy cat for a while to come. I nearly gave up on my cat! Dr. Bruce sensibly and rationally addressed my concerns and fears while getting Reggie what he needed.
Reggie is now thriving! We just had a check up this week and we did not even have to adjust the meds. Reggie appreciates not being dragged out into the city streets, I certainly appreciate not dragging him out and making him suffer needlessly. Dr. Bruce has the most reasonable veterinary rates I have encountered in 25 years of using various vets around the city. He always calls me to check in and always returns my calls in an admirably and incredibly short time.
Yes… there is more. Receiving care from Dr. Bruce is not about just getting a good vet and good service. Dr. Bruce clearly loves what he is doing. It is a vocation, not a job. He just adores these animals and he loves to see them improve under his aegis. Reggie can tell, too. He is much calmer with Dr. Bruce than with any previous vet. The reason… Reggie knows there is sincerity and devotion in this man. Cats can tell! And so can humans. So, THANK YOU Dr. Bruce, for EVERYTHING

Dr. Bruce has not only changed my cat’s life but mine as well. Olivia was very ill and after navigating the circuit of high end veterinary practices in Manhattan not only did she not appear to be getting better but her condition was worsening. I fortunately found Dr. Lowenstein through a very intelligent pet owner/​neighbor and called him immediately. He was patient and personable on the phone as I explained Olivia’s fragile condition. I began the process of switching her records over to him as soon as possible.
At first I couldn’t believe that a veterinarian would make a house call in this day and age but that is just one aspect that makes Dr. Bruce’s practice so wonderful. The process of placing a NYC house cat who is not well into a carrier and out onto the noisy streets of the city is traumatic for both cat and owner. Thanks to Dr. Bruce neither Olivia nor I will ever have to go through that process again!
Congenial Dr. Bruce showed up as soon as possible to help my Livvy. He has a way of speaking to Olivia that puts her at ease. Before she was terrified of strangers but now even after he examines her, draws blood, weighs her and/​or does the other necessary medical things that cats and humans dislike having done, Livvy walks right up to him as if he were an old friend rather than a doctor. Immediately, Dr. Bruce was able to make a complete and accurate diagnosis, removing the unnecessary medicines Olivia was on and providing her with exactly what she needed. She is happy, calm and doing much healthier thanks to Dr. Bruce.
Dr. Bruce is a true gem, a doctor who obviously treats the pet for the pet’s sake, not to line his pockets with cash. His pricing is very reasonable, an unexpected yet welcome plus. In fact I am sure that the cost of treating my cat is less due to his pricing and the savings from eliminating cab fare to and from the vet I had previously been using. Dr. Bruce is available 24/​7, something I wish all doctors would do! And he spends time with me and my pet, more time than any ‘traditional office vet’ ever has. He is methodical in examining Livvy all while talking her sweetly through the process (as if she understands, and maybe she does?), and then explaining to me, in detail what is going on, how she’s doing, what needs to be done and when I will receive test results. He promptly returns calls, answers questions and is absolutely trustworthy; everything I could ask for in the physician responsible for my beloved pet’s health. I seriously doubt Olivia would be alive today if not for Dr. Bruce and his amazing ability to diagnose and treat her rather complicated condition with accuracy and compassion.
