unREST in DEATH… The waiters at this bar/restaurant were crooked. Three separate times that I have been here… they pulled the scam of saying the credit card machine was broken, then had us pony up cash, then run outside after us when they claimed we shorted the bill… Three different groups. Three separate dates. Three different crooked servers. You do the math. The food, drink, décor, etc. were fine and the food was tasty for mostly heavy bar fare like über-sized burgers and such. However I am glad this place is gone… despite its famous patrons… those same patrons would be horrified to know what crappy people were there piflering money from students and working folks. So happy this place closed… the only thing that would have been better is if they blew it up with the crooked wait staffers.

RIP cedars tavern. Last year when you had your«we’re closing for renovations» sign up I was hoping it wasn’t what it turned out to be. At the bar, in the booths, lots of heart to hearts and drunken good times. You will be missed. And I see I’m not the only one.

I like this bar a lot. If I lived in Union Sq. I would probably be a regular. The pub food is well made, from your basic cheeseburger to a salmon caesar salad. Strong drinks and cool bartenders. Almost anytime’s good to hit up this place.

Stopped by here for a pint and some grub, the burger was decent and the service was quick and friendly. Booth was cozy and comfortable, great for groups of 4 needing a quick bite. Loved the décor, woodsy, I felt like a cigar in a nice humidor. That’s the best way to put it. Smokin’.

A little NYC history. The original Cedar Tavern was on 24 University Place and was the hangout for Jackson Pollock, William de Kooning and others in their circle. Then, Allen Ginsgberg, in his youthful Village days, hung out here with Gregory Corso… probably planning all sorts of drunken revelries, if Corso lived up to his reputation(he was probably the more riotous of the two). While not as famous, nor as notorious as any of these folks, I have spent many evenings at the Cedar. Part of the joy of attending NYU as a grad student is the evening classes which lets you hang out at bars with your classmates after classes. That’s what Cedar’s was all about: a pitcher of beer and some greasy snacks. Also, if there’s another World Series between the Yankees and the Red Soxs, one floor of Cedars will be Yankees fan(downstairs) and the other occupied by transplant Bostonians.

Nice little place to stop by with your co-workers after the 5 o’clock bell. It wasn’t uncomfortably crowded on a Friday evening, and you don’t have to shout to be heard(now, if you read my other reviews, you know I’m not a big fan of noise). Décor is warm, and it’s not a dumpy bar.

I love Cedar, mostly for their cider! Ha… that’s a funny sentence. They have an excellent homemade alcoholic cider that is perfect in the fall and winter months! The bar itself is very cute(and conveniently located). It’s on University Place, very close to NYU and to Union Square, so the crowd can be kind of young, but it’s a low key kind of bar, so it’s never rowdy here. The bar is all decked out with lots of wood inside. Try to get a booth in the back, where you can order food like french onion soup or potato skins, or even a chicken and pasta dish. It’s a fun little local bar.

I love stopping by here for a late night nosh, after a show at NYU or a movie at the Quad Cinema. I ldig the homey tavern feel(fancy that, a place named tavern has a tavern like quality!). Each time I’ve come here I’ve had a good experience, be it with a group or with my girl Krista(shout out!) Check out the upstairs bar or the back booths, all good times.

This is a great place for dinner with a warm atmosphere. We’ve also had several successful parties where we were able to commandeer a section of the upstairs.

This place used to have a cool neighborhood vibe… until the uptown folks started invading it. Chock full of law students and corporate types. The food here is edible, it gets better after a few drinks.
