Friendly and efficient service here just like you would expect from any Japanese organization. I felt like I was in Japan again when I went here. They also have a nice art gallery adjacent to the seating area and a window with some tourist information.

Visa applicants do not need to pay any fee to make an appointment. However, you might take the risk of wasting tons of time waiting. I’ve waited one hour for 3 applicants before me! Will never try to visit the consulate again during lunch break…

Cambridge, MA
Service at the Japanese Consulate has always been impeccable. I had to apply for Japanese tourist visa a couple of times and it is always a no hassle process.
A few things to note:
* if you search for the address directly on Google Maps, it may show up as 33rd St and Park Ave. This is WRONG — it’s closer to 48th St and Park Ave. What’s weird is that on a regular Google search, in the location snippet, the correct place is shown.
* Their business hours are 9:30 AM to 4 PM sharp. Arriving any earlier or later will not get you in.
* You can pick up your passport on the scheduled date when the Consulate is open. There is no restriction where applications are submitted only in the morning and pickup only in the afternoon.

Very personal and helpful, no bureaucratic crap here. Not too crowded and they have many books and magazines about Japan at waiting room. It’s always pain to bring kids for any paperwork (ever applied for US passport? Nightmare…), but this place make every effort to make parents and kids feel welcome. They also have an exhibit floor to kill some time while waiting.
I just wish the Japanese Government will post all paperwork template on-​line (just as the USG does…), because you still have to mail in stamped envelop to get the proper paperwork to fill in. Other than that, this is what we want to see as perfect example of Government.
