I was substitute teaching at the elementary school down the street and am not the type who typically gets up early enough to make my lunch before I leave home at 6:30am, so I knew I’d have to find a place to eat lunch — I’m glad I walked a couple blocks down and found this spot. My first visit to Cryshy I tried the oxtail, which was great! I think Oxtail always tastes great if they don’t mess it up, though. It was a little messy to eat on my lunch break, in a lunch room filled with people who don’t know me, so it’s a little intimidating to eat something with my hands in front of them, but most were jealous of my delicious oxtail so they didn’t care if I picked up the bones with my hands and got every last bit of meat off them. My 2nd visit, I got jerk chicken, but when she asked which gravy I wanted poured over my rice, I made sure to get some more of the oxtail gravy so I wouldn’t just have plain, dry rice and peas. It was also very good, and only $ 5 for a small serving. This place is a tiny, hole-in-the-wall take-out spot that serves breakfast as well. It seems to do a decent business from the school and people who live nearby. The employees were very nice and always gave me a bigger helping than should really fit in the take-out box. The other choices of protein(at lunch) were fried chicken, bbq chicken, stew chicken, and curry goat. I can’t remember their breakfast offerings, but the proteins were different, and you could even get hot oatmeal. They have a few drink choices in their fridge, including some Caribbean offerings, but I always wound up getting a soda from the deli next door. If you find yourself near Albany Ave, give this place a shot. I wish more people would skip their neighboring Crown Fried Chicken and head to Cryshy.
