Custom Men

I’ve purchased a lot of shirts for work from plenty of different stores at wildly different price points over the past few years… and no shirt i’ve owned fits as well as this one.
I’ve never really thought a lot about bespoke clothing — I figured the more time and effort put into creating something out of nothing, the higher the price would be.
My girlfriend got me a Groupon for a custom Italian dress shirt, so there I went. It was super gross hot out, and I walked the 30 minutes there from my office, so my first impression was «thank you for having decent air conditioning».
They took all my measurements, asked me how I like my shirts to fit, sit, lay, fall, etc. They also told me the shirt I was wearing was too big (already knew that) and pointed out small things that could be fixed to make it look better. I was impressed — a few pinches here and there and the shirt looked way better.
The guys there have obviously been doing this for a while — they knew what they were talking about and were really helpful.
I looked though what must have been at least 1,000 fabric choices, and made a decision on something that would match pretty much all of my business clothes.
And…done.
A month later, my shirt came in. I walked there from work (another super hot gross day, thanks again for the A/​C) and after I cooled down, I tried it on.
Wow.
It took trying on a shirt made for me in every way possible to show me that NO shirt I own 100% fits me the right way.
Damnit.
Total cost with the Groupon and shipping — just over $ 50.
I asked about getting more — now that my measurements are on file all I need to do is make an appointment to come in and look at fabrics and i’ll be in and out in 5 minutes.
I believe the normal price runs around $ 70+, but I asked about other offers and they had a few going on, so you should be able to save a little.
In a city where your appearance is everything… having a few of these in my repository of shirts will go a long way.

I’ve been hesitant to write this review for a while, partly because it took me forever to pick up my shirt (oops!), and partly because I had read the Unilocal reviews for this business before and noted that on several occasions, the owner (or whoever operates the Unilocal business account) left aggressive comments on any negative mentions in a user’s review. That should have been enough for me to not purchase the Groupon that I did back in November 2012, but off-​the-​rack dress shirts and I are not on the best terms, so I thought I’d give it a shot for $ 45. The $ 45 did not include tax, or the monogram that I requested, so the shirt probably came out to closer to $ 60.
I redeemed my Groupon in January or February of 2013, and was surprised that the man matching the Unilocal owner photo was nicer than his online personality would suggest. He took the measurements for my shirt himself, explained that I would need to come in for a fitting after the initial shirt was made, and showed me the different options one could get for a shirt. I put faith in them to help me make an appropriately fashionable choice, but I’d wager that wasn’t the best decision. Perhaps I should have known better in choosing a collar, but I did ask them which would match my face the best (they kept returning to the standard collar, which is way too big compared to my face/​neck, so I can’t button it all the way without looking, well, stupid), thinking they were the experts.
Barring that, the appointment went decently, and I was told to come back in a few weeks to see my shirt. When I came back, I was taken aback by how shapeless and large the shirt was, as if they measurements were less a guide to making a shirt for a body and more a guide to making a tent for me to sleep in. Despite my dismay, I did know one cardinal rule of tailoring: you could do more with too much fabric than you can with too little. «They’ll probably cut it down,» I thought.
Second fitting, I brought a friend whose mother is a seamstress because I needed a second opinion and didn’t want to go home with a shirt that was ill-​fitting or looked bad. The entire shirt was too puffy, the sleeves were still too long, and it wasn’t cut for someone chesty but with a smaller rib cage and waist. It was cut too straight for my body type — this was the whole reason I ever wanted a custom-​tailored dress shirt, anyway. But they seemed willing to continue alterations, so I left the shirt there longer.
…And then longer. I fully accept my tardiness in picking up the shirt. I didn’t go back to retrieve it after that April fitting until December 31^st, on the threat of having to pay for storage fees if they were to ship my unclaimed inventory off to a warehouse. I had stopped working in the city from May to early December, and really didn’t feel like making a trip down just for this shirt I didn’t feel that confident about. Maybe more fittings would have yielded an amazing shirt (I doubt it). But I finally did, hoping that the last fitting had been enough, and neither having the time nor the interest to request another fitting when I had neglected to communicate with Custom Men for so long. To their credit, I was emailed or received voicemails around once every 6 weeks until I finally picked up the shirt.
I tried it on a few hours later: the sleeves had gone from too long and puffy to too short and still a little puffy. The cut of the shirt still wasn’t really appropriate for the full-​busted; it looked almost like it would gape… the problem I have with everything off-​the-​rack. The fit was a little off, there were too many free wrinkles from seams that didn’t fit close enough to the body. My arms didn’t get longer from April to December, and I haven’t replaced any other clothing of mine in this time, either — so it’s not an issue of fluctuating body mass, more of a lack of interest or not knowing how to properly drape my figure. The monogram was «eh.» I may go somewhere else and have this shirt further tailored, I may not. I can’t decide yet. Maybe they’re okay for a less curvy female or for a male’s shirt/​suit/​etc., but I’m going to cut my losses here.

I’ve always had pleasant encounters with Custom Men in the dozen times I’ve visited. The staff are all very friendly and attentive. I’ve bought many suits, sport coats and shirts from them and am very satisfied with all my purchases. Already have referred them to many friends and will continue to do so in the future.

Ordered three shirts for ~$ 230 from a groupon. I specifically came here to get shirts for my WEDDING and after being promised they would arrive on time, they dont return phone calls and they outright lie
To add insult to injury they then forgot to mail them to me after they said they would. When pressed as to why they forgot to participate in «service recovery» and make a bad situation better, they had NO answer. They are the most unprofessional business I have ever worked with… with the exception of Steinway Dental… but that’s a different story.

FH had a cashmere overcoat made here. They were extremely pleasant to work with. The options they offered were really amazing and high quality. He actually enjoyed the experience, which was a surprise.
Definitely appreciated the GILT deal they had for the holidays.
Will return.

I came here mid-​January with a Groupon to get 1 custom shirt for $ 45 (67% discount from listed price). The service was good and courteous, and they were not pushy to sell you additional stuffs, which I liked.
I got the shirt back a few days ago, or 5 weeks after the first visit. They said it would take between 5 to 6 weeks to make shirt so everything is ok there. The shirt fits well and the fabric is good, so this is definitely good value for the bucks.
I will probably go back if I have a custom shirt to make. Not sure about the suits, I did not really pay attention to what they offer.

What brought me here was, no surprise, Groupon. I had bought three shirts in a package and they came out really nice. I purchased this back in December 10, 2011 and did not use until March 14, 2012. Approximately 4 weeks later, I received a call to come in and get my shirts. They fit really well. The fabric was okay — Egyptian Cotton.
Recently, I bought two more shirts November 28, 2012 through Groupon again. [It is worth mentioning if one were to purchase the Groupon-​valued vouchers, this does NOT include tax.] I picked up the shirts yesterday, though they were ready a week prior. The fabric is Tessitura Italian, but it honestly does not feel like an extraordinary fabric. Both fabrics feel the same honestly. They make suits as well, though I do not think I will buy from them as there are other places I feel suits are done well. Vijay, the owner is very helpful. Nice people and staff. They own another «business» called «Bespoke Fit.» They are the same company, just names differently to capture a larger audience. My shirts are made-​to-​measure off a stock pattern.

This is the place for high-​quality suits and shirts at a fair price, and I’m glad to have a found my tailor of choice.
There are a wide range of fabrics, linings, buttons, felts to choose from which allow a high degree of customization. Alterations are a breeze too as they are done on-​site.
Expect professional and courteous service with a personal touch from Vijay, the owner.
I had a bespoke suit made a year ago, which fits beautifully. I sent my brother here too and he had a similarly good experience. Having received so many compliments from friends & family, I just placed an order for my second suit.

We purchased 3 custom shirts last Winter and had a great experience. The gentelman that worked with us was very helpful. There were plenty of fabrics and styles to choose from. Going back for more!

What i love about Custom Men is that Vijay will make sure that the fitting process is meticulously done to make sure that the suits and shirts fit perfectly. I cannot begin to say how much I love Custom Men.
They have a phenomenal selection of fabrics, an incredible and friendly staff, and every time I pick up an order, I leave incredibly happy.

They’re prices are amazing (given that their fabrics and manufacturing are much higher quality than other companies that call themselves bespoke for the same cost or less), and this is one of the only companies I’ll buy from now. And forget buying from Brooks Brothers or JoS A Bank! For the prices you’d pay there, you can get outfit your wardrobe with completely bespoke items that truly reflect your body and your style.
And as to Vijay, Paula, and George, they are so wonderful to work with and so incredibly helpful. I truly feel like I well taken care of by them. They are stylish and knowledgable people who can answer my every question, help me choose the right colors and cuts for my shirts, and really know the meaning of customer service.

I got a deal on Groupon for a few shirts here. The fit and quality are pretty good and the service was top notch. They have a wide selection of fabric. My shirts took about a month to finish after measurements which is a little longer than usual, but well worth it. The shirts are a bit pricey, but they have often have deals.

Vijay and his team provide great service for your sartorial needs. He communicates very clearly throughout the whole process and makes an effort to tailor to your ‘custom’ needs. Top notch service and quality.

High quality custom clothing for not much more than off-​the-​rack! I’ve had three perfect sport jackets made by Vijay!
The first two jackets are light weight wool and linen blends by Marzoni and the trousers were tropical wool by Zegna and Dormeuil. The Olive jacket has dark olive trousers and the blue jacket has navy. Since I couldn’t be personally measured, I sent Vijay one of my best fitting suits.

actually fit better across the back than the original suit! I don’t know how they did that so I asked! Vijay said his father heads up the Hong Kong tailoring division and he thought that the back shoulder area should be modified to give me more comfort!
My third sport jacket from CustomMen is a beautiful herringbone tweed in deep green with blue tones.

I ordered a shirt from Custom Men. Vijay was patient and friendly in explaining the options to me. They delivered a nice product to me in a timely fashion. In particular, good fit and fabric has held up nicely. Had a very good experience.

I have used Custom Men several times over the last two years after being referred by a friend. I am extremely happy with their selections, service, suggestions, timelines and overall quality/​price. Vijay and the team there are extremely easy to work with and are truly customer focused. Very professional.
I priced compared a Hugo Boss suit from Blomingdales vs a Custom Mens Suit of equivalent materials, cut, etc… and it was the same price BUT at custom men your getting a beauty of a fully custom suit (cut. measurements, linings, etc.)… I also compared shirts. and again the win went to Custom Men… actually in most cases Custom Men was less expensive on the shirts then compared to Boss, Zenga, and several other high end shirt makers.
In the 1 case where there was an issue with my shirt order, (i.e. cuffs were french and they should have been regular, the order was fixed in less than a week)
I have since recommended Custom Men to several friends and have just made an appoint for another fitting of shirts and suits!
Highly recommend them if you are looking for a local custom suit and shirt place in the NYC area. Oh, they have also done casual stuff for me as well. Dress shirts, Blazers, etc.

You get what you pay for? Vijay is a nice guy but has no clue about fashion if you want a basic suit with your name on it but will not look much different on you then if it was bought in the Macys. I basically spent over 3k and requested slim fit suits and while the concept was good the fit on first try was like for someone 30lbs bigger. I am pretty fashion concious and there is no way to take a suit that is so big and adjust down to a tailored slim fit the shoulders are what they are and the crotch on pants way too long. Then when you want it fixed then you go to the back of the line because their onsite tailor is paid to get people measured and out and when big modifications are required as mine was, they complain like i should be happy with what I got. They get a small margin on each suit so if you add too much work then it cuts into their margin. You are required to prepay 50% because its done in Hong Kong then you are told that in Hong Kong the factory worker has no common sense, it all gets blamed on them. This is not for Bespoke or custom fit this is an assembly line operation designed for 50+ american men who wear suits way too big to begin with and don’t know any better or simply are just used to buying Brooks Brothers so they see nothing wrong. It will make sense when you see the way Vijay wears his suits, that is the way he thinks a suit should look. I am sorry but that is not custom so agree with the other reviewer looks like Brooks Brothers or Macys off the rack suit with your name labeled inside. I ordered 6 shirts the too were too big, with some work they fixed them to look decent but not much different than off the rack or ordering online from Charles Tyrwhitt. For the suits, i could have gone to one of those stores in Manhattan that sell suits 3X $ 500 and then taken them to be fitted and it would look the same. If you try it out be very specific read the order form make sure details you want are on it. Start by ordering one at a time don’t get sucked into the big specials they promote and see first if it works for you. I order 6 shirts too one of which the material is so bad it’s basically unusable a good tailor would actually recommend clients not buy that material as there are various types of material in same colors. I give it a 2 because of Vijay and Marlo are nice guys but unfortunately you become a number one they get you ordered. I felt like I was bothering them when I called to let them know I needed modifications.

Received a coupon towards a new purchase and decided to give them another. At the same time I took advantage to have my suits and shirts altered. I must say they did a fantastic job, although I had put such a negative review I was treated like one of their top clients, given great service and the results were spectacular. A new onsite tailor who is hard to understand but is really a great tailor. The suits finally looked like they were supposed to look when I bought a custom suit! Great job! Thank you

Top notch service.
It is hard to find good suits in the city for acceptable prices, especially not ones that are fit to order and of the best quality. I’ve been getting sick of going to Macy’s and Brooks Brothers where the suits are a little too big or a little too small. Finally took the leap to get a bespoke suit and it feels AMAZING! Waist is the exact fit, fabric feels amazing and the collar on the shirts is exact.
Ask for Vijay. He’ll take care of you.
