Besides the smell(they need a new ventilation system and a good cleanup of walls etc.) the waiters need to be updated. The runners were nice and maybe they should be the waiters. The most important thing is the food and this place still delivers even after decades in business.

Lovely Indian cuisine, very friendly staff and the food is amazing. The place might not be looking like the best restaurant in town, but it sure has some pretty good food. Try it out!

This classic gets over looked as new restaurants come and go. The chef takes everything to the next level. Of particular interest is the whole fish. We also loved the saag and the goat biriani. My first time eating here was at least 10 years ago and I loved it just as much when I went last week.

I came here after my shopping spree at a nearest store. I passed by here and thought why not try it since I passed the restaurant many times anyway. The restaurant has 2 dining sections in the back and front of the bar. I was seated at the front right by the window so I could see«the traffic?» I prefer this area anyway. The waiter came in to ask for the type of water, as usual. Then before placing my order, although I know about Indian food and know what most of them are, I asked questions to make sure there’s nothing that I cannot eat due to my new allergy discovery. The waiter explained to the best of his ability, he did a good job. The side dish was a flat crispy bread, papadum? with a mint dipping sauce. That was pretty good. I decided to order Chicken Tikka Masala because the waiter said it’s people’s favorite dish. There are 2 types of Chicken Tikka, one without sauce and one with sauce. Mine was with sauce. The sauce is as we all know, yogurt and tomato. I had this and I enjoyed this. I had it with both rice and garlic naan. The naan was very delicious but oily. Try this, you won’t be disappointed. I ate slowly so I could enjoy. I took half of everything home. I asked the waiter about the faces/masks on the wall. He said closed and opened eye mask symbolizes conscious and unconscious. Good, I’m the conscious one. But to read the menu, I had 4 eyes, even more conscious at the time. The waiter and runner were polite. Food wise, this place has an OK Tikka Masala. The food was served pretty quickly, maybe because not a lot of patrons yet. I have tried a few dishes from different Indian restaurants in NY before joining this Unilocal,at one time I loved tandoori. The bill is slightly higher because of the location. Try it, doesn’t hurt. The shopping plus dining, that hurts a bit. Then here comes Über, ouch! Three things I spent on the same day.

Visiting NY from Baltimore. Wanted to try some good Indian food. Cocktails were horrible, I guess Indians do not make Cocktails well. Food was average. Tandoori mixed grill supposed to be sizzling but was not. Only one bread served and small bowl of rice was $ 8.50. Oh! the men’s bathroom stinks like Manhattan and very poor condition. Not impressed ;((

Excellent Indian food. Usually able to get a table. A wonderfully quiet restaurant and helpful waiters. Deliciously spicy.

Tried this place recently. Service was excellent. We ordered the veggie samosa, garlic naan and chicken tikka masala. The food was all delicious and the chicken tikka masala was very lightly spiced, very very mild. I’m sure you could request spicer but I was sharing the meal with someone who doesn’t like much spice so it was perfect for us. A lot of reviews were disappointed in decorations but I found nothing lacking. The ladies room was clean and well stocked. The dishes and decorations were very lovely and typical of a curry house. I will be going back.(Only reason I didn’t give it a 5 was there was nothing spectacular about this place. Good food, clean, good service, but nothing was a wow moment.)

Stopped in randomly one work day to make a sales call and it was love at first sniff! I ordered the Chefs Special off the lunch menu and could not believe how much delicious food was brought out to me. The chicken masala was oh so good. Comes with rice, spinach, potatoes, soup ANDNAAN! Definitely stuffed. Definitely satisfied.

Good Indian food but nothing spectacular. I’ve been coming here for a while and it’s definitely better than most Indian places I’ve tried…

Elegant, classy but not presumptuous is the perfect way to describe our dining experience at Dawat. The Maitre d’ was kind enough to give us a corner table with a full view of the restaurant and the chef working the Tandoor. Service was exceptional. Our water glasses were never empty and we were cleared and reset after every course. The food was classically Indian and beautifully presented and served by the professional, yet friendly waiters. Everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Highly recommend.

Came here for dinner on a whim after work and the food did not disappoint. The portions are big(had left overs for lunch the next day). Would definitely recommend.

Not anything to special to me even write a review about but I guess here it is. Came last night to order some takeout and from what I could see the decorations were just ordinary. It was fairly empty but then again it was close to closing time. We got the rice with chicken which was actually very good. The goat skewers which were like ground up lamb was good but extremely spicy. The chicken was just ok nothing really to rave about. First time eating Indian and I wasn’t as displeased as I thought.

I had heard great things about Dawat and was excited to try it the other night. Despite there being no reservations available on Open Table for a Tuesday night, we were able to secure a reservation for two at 7 when we called. The restaurant was almost empty when we got there, so I’m not sure what that was about. Overall, the experience was disappointing. I was expecting a much more upscale vibe, but the décor felt sparse and unsophisticated. The service was average and our waiter seemed uncomfortable. The food did not make up for the underwhelming atmosphere. A crispy unleavened bread with a spicy parsley sauce preluded our meal. To start, we split with Baghari Jhinga, or shrimp with garlic, mustard seeds, and curry leaves. It was a bit spicy but didn’t have a lot of taste. As our entrees, we ordered the Chilean Sea Bass Fish Tikka and the Chicken Tikka Masala. The fish was cooked nicely, but came on a plate with sliced raw onions which seemed like an odd accompaniment. The chicken tikka was not memorable. We also ordered plain naan and steamed basmati rice. The naan came out dripping in butter, which I was not happy with. My companion and I skipped any dessert offerings, choosing instead to go to another place to satisfy our sweet tooth. I had high hopes for Dawat but will not be returning!

Walked in here for a late lunch on a cold weekday. On sitting down, my husband commented that the complementary cilantro chutney served with the crispy flat bread was the best he ever had. The place looks stylish and high-end for being an Indian restaurant with nice and tasteful décor(not overdone). We ordered Kashmir Style Dhaniwal Korma Chicken, Chicken Saag and Naan, which was all good. The staff was awesome; very accommodating, attentive and friendly. Prices were a bit high(especially for lunch) but hey, its Manhattan!

Known this restaurant since 1990’s under previous owners. Returned to eat here and did eat a few times this year. Today finally decided never again NEVER order Raan — it comes within 10 mins of ordering food off the bones dry completely means not juicy at all — any tandoori dish prepared from scratch after being marinated is minimum 20 – 25 mins in the oven(Tandoor) so obviously here the chef prepares Raan ahead of time and it is kept in the kitchen to be reheated and served they should just take it off the menu as it an insult to a very famous muglai dish Tadka daal a simple Northindian yellow toor daal was made of uncooked Chana daal Appetizer simple bhel puri smelling of old kept oil was a disaster also Ms Madhur Jaffrey needs to keep an eye on the quality of cuisine being served under her name

Amazing food and impeccable service! We ordered: Chicken Tikka stuffed Naan Keema Samosa Goat Biryani Chicken Makhani Everything had incredible flavor and great presentation. Far surpass the many restaurants we ate at while in NY. If you are visiting, this restaurant is a must!

I’ve been eating and ordering delivery from Dawat for 30+ years and this is the last time I will ever give them my business! For $ 65 I got a child’s portion of food(the same dishes we always order) which normally would feed 2 adults comfortably. The Jasmine rice had no Jasmine and rice costs all of??? Don’t get me completely wrong, the food is Extremely good but seriously, at these prices and audaciously minimal portions, I would think there’s enough competition in all of NYC to go elsewhere for as good a meal as any! In fact I’m sure of it. And management should have handled the complaint more professional, especially knowing we order regularly. But to be as rude and curt as they were… Namastē Dawat!

I order every week from dawat for numerous years. It ended this evening when I received a 3 yr old portion for $ 65 and on top of that I found something special in my jasmine rice. instead of jasmine. . it’s called Brillo which was free of charge.. I threw up everything on the spot.. P. s. I called up and they were the rudest management I’ve ever encountered … They told me they would not replace any food nor give a refund.. They basically rushed me off the phone and hung up on me..
