Fairway Market

When I am looking for fair priced organic goods, and a wide variety of ANY and everything… Fairway has it… and then SOME! They often have sales going on for some of my favorite items. For some reason, I actually prefer Fairway over some other markets in the city that price gouge.
They do sell some «unhealthy» items as well… it’s not just a «healthy» market. The staff is usually helpful, and I have always had a pleasant experience. Overall, I think things are priced reasonably especially for it being in the flatiron/​chelsea area.

This is the worst Fairway I have ever seen. I have been to multiple locations and this one SUCKS. Close it down, fix it, then re-​open it in a manner that is worthy of being called Fairway. Seriously. Your other locations are good, this one is not.

I’ve been here 3x this week and each time there has been a new dog. Pretty sure this isn’t sanitary or legal. I’m a city dog owner and even I think it’s rude and disgusting to bring your dog into a grocery store. It’s also irresponsible of the workers to allow it.

Their house-​brand sweet potato pie is tasteless and soooooooooooo sweet. Tooooooo sweet to be exact.

I’m a big fan of Fairways! I have never been disappointed with any of the selections that I have made here. I always make it a point to pop in and do my shopping here.

The Chelsea store is the weak link in an otherwise great chain. Either close this store down, or fix the WRETCHED customer service, that can often be experienced from noon on. Uneven. The deli area’s great and the EARLY morning Customer Service is good too. I only go to the Chelsea when I’m desperate and crunched for time, and have learned to stay away mid-​day and mid-​evenings to avoid, at times, the INEXCREBLE up front customer service, which, if one didn’t know better, could make one swear off a FAIRWAY forever.
But like I said, the Chelsea store is the weak link, and To experience Fairway at its finest (which can be VERY FINE) check out the UWS side at 74^th and B’way.
In fairness and to be balanced, let me say where FAIRWAY universally excels: THEIR SMOKED FISH products – much better IMO than Zabar’s

Sadly, Fairway has deteriorated. The prices have gone sky high. Newspaper articles seem to say the company is now public and not doing well. The expansion of Fairway around NYC has hurt the 74^th Street/​Broadway store, once a wonderful place to shop.

I was just standing still reading the cheese labels and all of a sudden I got rammed with a baker’s cart… both my knees– which still hurt hit the table as I was forcefully pushed. The women whom hit me didn’t even say sorry– just smiled. I did get an «are you ok» and «so sorry» from another employee, So when shopping at Fairway be warned! Most of the other staff are really nice and they do have a good selection of certain items. I’ll still come here just because it’s close to my office. My experience was also on Christmas eve, so a sorry would have been nice :)

One of my favorite markets! And I love that they are expanding all over the tri-​borough area! I was happy when this opened because its within walking distance to my office and I no longer have to deal with the insanity that is Whole Foods or walk all the way down to Trader Joes.
This market is consistently very clean and has very helpful staff. They are very efficient at check out which is a huge deal for me and more often than not, very friendly check out people.
I think the moment I became really really loyal to this location (granted, the red hook location is a close second) is when it was around thanksgiving time and it was MADNESS but my office INSISTED on me helping to get them apple cider. I was beyond stressed and when I asked a staff member to help me… he was like stay right here. He ran off and went down into their shipment and storage area and brought up a WHOLE CRATE of apple cider gallons and told me «Just in case you want more». That kind of above and beyond to help clients is a huge star in my book.
Kudos Fairway. You have a supporter for life :)

Still the best place to buy groceries in manhattan imo. Going downhill though ever since they went public. But a much better shopping experience than Whole Foods.

Very good selection of most items, especially produce, cheese and prepared foods, but they have recently closed the butcher shop as it wasn’t profitable, so only pre packaged meats are available. It was a main draw for me, especially for holiday or special occasion meats. And the chopped veal and pork, (which I need for meatballs!) is loaded with preservative chemicals. YUK!
Also, last two deliveries, items were missing and I had to return to the store to pick them up, they wouldn’t re deliver.

Fairway, in particular this location, seems to be going downhill. I just had to return a large container of arugula that was spoiled right when I opened it. The checkout line is a mess and the customer service very spotty here. This probably has something to do with the fact that Sterling Investment Partners bought a large stake and is probably bleeding it dry to sell out after bringing it public.

We use our ‘local’ Fairway for various events throughout the year for our office. They come through in a pinch and deliver which is wonderful. We recently had them ‘emergency bake’ for us for our Halloween event and I can’t thank them enough for being prompt and helpful! We will be ordering for our Thanksgiving event next!

Great produce, good prices and selection. This is the best supermarket in the area by far.

I went to the one on the Upper East Side to browse before & since I was in the area thought maybe I could get some grocery items I like that might not cost me a million dollars or at least be something affordable that I won’t find elsewhere. I did manage to find some croutons & fresh chicken here portioned for people not feeding large families (I remembered the other location letting you get your chicken cut & I found stir fry pieces here). Definitely healthy offerings here, including these bean chips I tried a couple years back at the Green Festival that are delicious. The line wasn’t the shortest & this place is a little tiny/​harder to navigate but you will see some nice stuff here. If I were in the area, it’s possible I’d pick up some items here for myself that would be little indulgences.

This is unfortunately an example of when Fairway’s wonderful markets aren’t run with the same standards. Most Fairways are fantastic, especially the 86^th st location. However this location in Chelsea/​Flatiron is brought down by a terribly unfriendly staff and much higher prices that don’t compete in value or quality to the nearby Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s.

Messing, full of people walk on around with a tagged shirt with «fairway» on it doing nothing productive but texting and talking to what it looks like their friends.
The do have a good variety of food.

This is an amazing supermarket!
I couldn’t believe this place. If you like authentic New York style deli’s this place is a dream come true.
Besides being a cramped New York supermarket, And simply the lack of real estate in the city — if you can get used to that you’ll not mind the incredible value you’ll find here.
I bought a lot from the deli! The Mediterranean chicken salad is out of this world. In the fish department calamari salad is incredible as well.
The bakery had a really good sourdough bread which they sliced for you.
Between this place and Whole Foods I would choose this place.
Who needs to spend tons of money on good restaurants when you have such a great supermarket right near by.
The one thing that was missed was great feta cheese.
It was more than just food shopping. It really was an experience. A great New York food experience!

Was here killing time, buying fruit and a dinner salad when I suddenly just stopped dead in my Sorel tracks.
Yes I see you. Youre an almond cookie the size of my hand n fingers. Shiload of sliced almonds encrusted all around to keep you warm and the almond paste insides nicely moist and perfectly chewy. Seeing so many effin almonds makes my dopamine levels go up. Gotta do with my being asian most likely and the frequent use of almonds in everything.
Im excited to eat every bite of this nutritious almond loaded flavorful cookie. Its one of the best, most satisfying cookies Ive eaten.

Fairway is an emerging supermarket store which would be a welcomed addition to any city. New York is lucky to have Fairway.
Being from CALIFORNIA, there’s higher end grocery stores like Whole Foods, Gelson’s, Trader Joes, Molly Stone, Bristol Farms and the like, as well as supermarket chains like Lucky’s, Albertsons, Von’s, Safeway, Ralph’s, Food For Less, Fresh and Easy, etc. — - I love Fairway much better than them all!!!
They sell all of the ingredients to make a fine meal, or hot foods to eat right away.
Oddly enough, I found out about Fairway from a stock tip (NASDAQ = FWM) And it’s only trading at $ 6.50 /​share (as of June 2014), and am very impressed by the store. I remember when Whole Foods stock was around $ 20, then quickly hit $ 50, then upwards to and past $ 75 then and split in a matter of a few years. Who knows if Faiarway can do the same. I do like their chances ‘tho.
