Fifty NYC-an Affinia hotel

Winter storm Jonas was coming, and I called to cancel my pre-​paid reservation as it looked like the storm was going to be really bad.
They said they would see what they could do and didn’t see a problem. We were unable to get to the hotel anyway as all the roads, rails, and subways were closed.
On Sunday they informed me they would not return my room fees. Even with an act of God such as this.
If this is their policy, I will never, ever return to any Affinia hotel, no matter what the price. They cannot be trusted to do what is right.
As an aside, Expedia returned the room fees, as far as I know, it was on them.
Good for Expedia.

Midtown oasis for my short stay in NYC. The entire experience was awesome. Doorman made you feel right at home by greeting you «welcome home» it’s just this one doorman who works the nightshift that has a great and friendly attitude.
The suite was huge with a fantastic view of the streets below. Noise can be heard from down below even if you’re high up (18^th floor) so they provided for earplugs.
No soundproofing here. Water pressure could be better but this is my personal preference.

One of the most underrated hotel chains in NYC — Affnia Hotels:
I’ll be brief and give you the highlights about why you should book this particular hotel:
PROS:
— It’s gorgeous
— It’s modern
— It’s recently undergone a 19 million dollar renovation
— It’s very affordable (ESPECIALLY for the price)
— It’s one block from the subway
— It’s in a great central location
— It’s spacious
— It’s plush and comfortable
We went for our anniversary and they made us feel so special and sent up a bottle of champagne with a handwritten note. Super sweet. It’s also important to note that they offer crazy deals through Unilocal and their website. And they are not fake deals to try to entice you, but real deals like book X amount of nights, get one free, and discounts on select nights.
CONS: (And very minor ones…)
— There is no bar here for a nightcap, however they do offer complimentary wine from 5pm 6pm.
— Our room was right next to the housekeeping closet so it was kind of rowdy from time to time.
— We’ve been to NYC a few times now, and the ONLY reason I wouldn’t book again is to be closer to the West Village where we spent the majority of our time. Other than that, I will continue to book this hotel for other trips, and I highly recommend for anyone looking for a little bit of fancy on a budget ;)

Yes, I’m disgruntled. Yes, this starts with my terrible travel agent, booking a flight from M-​F but only getting me a room for one night. I could have made this mistake by myself without Here’s the thing, I’m being gouged over $ 890 for Thursday night because they can. When I asked for help at the desk it was lower but by the time I called my emergency travel number it was 890. It’s not the people at the desk, it’s the Wizard of Oz in the back room. This is why Air BNB is going to crush the hospitality business. (the lack of hospitality) The elevators are slow and the room smells like AC mold. As far as photos go, remember the difference between a real estate ad and the reality. The same thing goes here.

This literally happened just a few months ago. I was in a room and there was an obvious prostitute in the hotel and there were several men going in and out throughout a fee days. And then the person and a man started asking HOTEL GUESTS if they were interested in purchasing mdma and other drugs. It was one of the strangest things I’ve ever experienced. The thing is — — i actually told the hotel and they did NOTHING. I couldn’t believe it. This prostitute ended up staying the remainder of the weekend that I was there and it made me very uncomfortable. I went to the website and sent through a comment which I have proof of and I even gave them a room number but there was no response and no action taken.
So I guess we know where those craigslist escorts like to stay.

Quite possibly the best hotel in New York City.
To say the staff was friendly and helpful isn’t fair. They went above and beyond to ensure our stay was comfortable, stress-​free, and enjoyable.
Comfortable, Stress-​Free, and Happy is how i felt during our entire stay (4 nights). Every hotel should strive to do that.

Great hotel, great location, fabulous staff.
Stayed for the 2^nd time and was extremely happy with the accommodations. We had a 1 bedroom suite with a kitchenette, dining table, huge living room and a fabulous terrace.
Love the wine every evening on the second floor. From Doorman to front desk staff and housekeeping everyone is so friendly and helpful!

I loved everything about this hotel. The staff members are phenomenal. The hotel is very clean and the suite is spacious.

Stayed here with girlfriends for the long weekend last weekend. One of the friends is a bride to be and we flew up for her bridal shower and bachelorette celebrations. The hotel was nice, felt clean and was a decent size and price for the holiday.
Our biggest complaint was the size of the bathroom. We were in a double room and the bathroom was barely large enough for just one person. You could not sit on the toilet and close the door because your legs would be in the way of the door.
Otherwise, very nice and great location.

Love New York and I’m always open to trying lower budget hotels that aren’t The Standard etc. To simplify my experience:
Guest Services: I arrive today at 7AM and three front desk attendants just stare at me. One male and females behind the desk and another female leaving from her desk but she was blocking me from approaching the desk. It looked like I interrupted her conversation because I arrived. (Interesting). The attendants just stared at me and didn’t welcome me while the other female went back to her convo with the male. The male and female move away from the desk and I’m left with the female behind the desk named, Gloria Brown.
Gloria Brown still doesn’t greet me. She’s fixing or figuring out how to use the computer. She finally looks up after standing there for five minutes throughout this whole thing. She doesn’t ask me if I need help. She just looks at me. In fact the other two attendants are still conversing near the desk and just looking at me. Finally I say «may I check in?» Brown immediately says «we don’t have anymore rooms.» From my understanding usually when someone says they want to check in that means they have an existing reservations. But maybe that’s just me, considering I travel every two weeks.
Moving forward with the entire check in, it took brown 5 – 7 minutes to figure out how to use a computer. She moved away to another computer and didn’t ask or insist I follow her. When she handed me my room card. She didn’t tell me my room or where the elevators where. She just checked me in and said «have a great stay.» Must I add she also knew it was my first time trying their hotel. Maybe it was her first day? But the front desk is the FIRST and LAST impression of any business. To have such an unwelcoming experience and more so unorganized one makes this business look less professional.
Housekeeping: they have been so sweet and accommodating. I can’t thank them enough for calling to check on me to make sure what I needed was received. If it wasn’t for their attentive service I don’t think I would’ve put an extra star.
Hotel décor: great décor. I like the «theme» they are going for. Furniture and bed have a great presentation.
Cleanliness: I’m all about the details. At first sight yes everything looks presentable. But with the bathroom there’s creases with mold and my toilet had a piece of hair in it.
This is only the morning of my first stay (today). Let’s hope I can last and stay the next night. I don’t «recommend» this place but I suggest it if you’re rarely going to be in your hotel and you need a place to stay that isn’t a motel or inn.

This place is fine. The rooms are bigger than the W just around the corner… and the service is friendly. The bathroom, at least in my room, was REALLY SMALL. Which was weird because the room was quite spacious. The bed was not incredibly comfortable but for the price and location (very close to my office) I will likely stay again.

I had a fantastic experience at this hotel this past weekend. The room in my opinion was extremely well sized not just for manhattan but in general. The bed was comfortable, we had two floor length mirrors, and a kitchen packed with utensils, plates, bowls, bottle openers, coffee mugs, wine glasses, microwave, fridge and sink! The kitchen was a total surprise to me and when we walked in we immediately liked the modern look of our room. It was clean and perfectly designed.
At times the front desk was a bit slow but other than that it was a great hotel in a great location and for a great price.

A good hotel that was comfortable and affordable. Our room definitely was quite worn, but still comfortable. I would say that cleanliness was average.
There was a bit of confusion with wifi, but we had data packages and wifi was free in the Lobby, so we didn’t complain.
It was a great base to explore NYC from– an easy walk back from major attractions and a nice area.
I probably wouldn’t stay here again, just because I would want to experience something new, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I did.

Our excellent stay started with Manny the doorman. As soon as we arrived last Sunday, Manny greeted us, took our bags out of the Taxi, and held the door for us. He looked so quintessentially New York, in his Fedora hat, long black coat, sporting that warm, winning, genuine smile. From then on, our stay was fabulous.
Every single member of the hotel staff was genuinely warm, attentive, and welcoming. The room was exactly as pictured, well decorated, spacious, clean, bright, and comfortable. When we weren’t walking the streets of the city, our favorite past time was watching the office workers directly across the street on 50^th. We had the junior suite with kitchenette complete with drawer microwave, sink, mini fridge, serve ware, and utinsils, which came in really handy for those meals we brought back from Paris Baguette and Cabana.
I enjoyed working out in the gym which has free weights, a few exercise bikes, a couple of treadmills, eliptical machines, free ear phones, water, towels, toilet and shower, TVs and Ipod docking stations on the machines, and my fav. a full-​body work out tower complete with straps for rowing, pressing, leg work, arm work, butt work, back work, you name it, it does it all with photos of how to perform each move. So sore the next day, but walking the streets of the city ironed it all out.
They also have a wine hour from 5pm to 6pm. Love the casual but upscale décor of the clubroom where they hold this event. And if you don’t like what they’re serving, there are several stores within a 1 mile radius, and a corkscrew in the room.
50 attracts a diverse mix of travelers, as we ran into friendly guests from several different countries who spoke enough English to engage with us. I didn’t like paying the daily internet access fee, or the fee to use the hotel computer (which is free for printing boarding passes), but I get that it is expensive to run a business in NY. Just hope those wonderful housekeepers, door attendants, desk clerks, and wine servers are being paid well. 50 NYC will be my new home away from home in New York.

Great location (2 blocks from main shopping street, 1 block from the subway), great staff, and spacious room! The hotel seems to be remodeled recently and it’s contemporary nice. Downfall, the shower nob was loose. not cool.
We booked 2 queen studio with kitchen. IT was spacious and very comfortable living for 2 nights. I booked via website therefore the internet fee was waived. Will consider staying here in the future.

Beautiful rooms. Great location. Courteous, friendly staff. Very clean. Would highly recommend this hotel. Lots of greeat restaurants in the area. Will definitely go back.

The interiors look very nice, the beds have duvets, and someone opens the door for you (most of the time). But I was pretty shocked that such an expensive hotel had absolutely no sound insulation on the windows. I’m not a picky sleeper (my bedroom growing up faced lexington avenue) but it was just absurdly loud with constant honking late into the night. I ended up moving — you can still hear the street from the back of the building, but it’s muted.
However, the new room came with another set of noises — the elevators chimed loudly enough to hear inside the room and the elevator shafts made a faint whining noise all night.
The shower has absolutely no pressure so I am going to have to pay someone else to wash my hair. Maybe this is considered a discount hotel for the area but at 450 dollars a night, I’d rather they got their priorities straight.

The Fifth is. 3.5−4 star hotel. Great location. The rooms are pretty spacious in comparison to other NYC hotels. The décor is nice and beds are very comfy. Housekeeping could be stepped up a notch. That’s my only problem. Since some of the rooms have kitchenettes sometimes have a food smell lingering in the halls.
As for internet, it was free for our room but I understand it’s not free for all. I think it depends on how you booked your room.
The staff was very helpful and friendly. We were celebrating a friends birthday. I was surprised to find a bottle of bubbly and a birthday cupcake in the room. I would definitely return.

The bad:
Very small bathrooms with no ventilation system
Wifi is not complimentary
The toilet in my bathroom smelled weird. It looked clean, but always smelled odd. I was never in my room long enough to ask them about the smell, I was hoping the cleaning lady would do something about it.

I have mixed feelings about the Affinia 50. The location is great, and the service is excellent. I’m here often for work, and so have seen it both before and after renovation. I like the new look and layout of the lobby, and the rooms are fresh looking. The beds are still my favorites in Manhattan, and the linens are great– clean, soft, plentiful. The pillow bar is cool and I love the buckwheat option.
I miss the philosophy toiletries. I can’t see ponying up for wifi every day, and there always seems to be some small detail that has been overlooked. I have found socks in the dresser, a used bong resin picking device on the desk, hairs in various places, and it irks me that the breakfast is lackluster. The alarm clocks have iPhone docks, but only fit the iPhone 4. It’s hard to get your room to the right temperature if you use the on-​wall controls. The front desk says to just turn the system off. Opening the window is sometimes a fast food stinking adventure.
That being said, I like staying here, especially when Rome is working– he’s very helpful and welcoming. But given a choice between the A50 or the competitors like Residence in the neighborhood, it’s kind of a toss up.
