Purchased a Groupon for this place. It was $ 30 for one appetizer, two hand rolls and two special rolls. When I called to see if fujiyama was open the man was very quiet and seemed annoyed that I was bothering him. That should have been the first sign to not come to this place. I came in and was greeted by the same man. He was cold and he seemed annoyed that I was there. He became even more dismissive when I told him I had purchased the groupon. As we were about to place our order he went through the menu and told us everything that we were not allowed to order with the groupon. There were about 6 things we could not order. I guess the more expensive appetizers were not included. That’s fine, but why not tell us before we have our order ready? When he delivered our food, we thanked him. He didn’t say a word or make any sort of facial expression. He just walked away. The appetizer was okay. The rolls were mini sized. Like really mini sized. Come on. And besides being mini sized, the fish tasted old. I will never come to this place again. And I will prob not buy groupons to restaurants either.

First off, this is a Groupon review. But I’m not a Groupon asshole: I use grouping to try new places and cuisines. In NYC, it’s a great opportunity to get to places you may otherwise never eat at. I’ve worked in hospitality for years, and I tip based on actual value and actual effort. We walk in, and four staff members make eye contact then return to what they were doing. We might as well have been a spooky noise in an old house, because obviously no one could see us. Some Beetlejuice type shit, right there. So we sat ourselves. When an employee decided to come over about 5 minutes later, he dropped the menus, and didn’t even acknowledge my «hello» or «thank you.» I was beginning to think I was actually haunting this place, but after he left I realized I was just an asshole, pissing them off for expecting a normal, human interaction. Who did I think I was, anyways? So after spending a few minutes looking at the menu, two of the items we wanted we were told we couldn’t have with the Groupon. While he stood there, we picked two others, to which he replied«no.» Finally, we reached an agreement, which meant basically the cheaper rolls. Yay, just what I wanted. Food was ok. Kinda bland, but definitely edible. I wasn’t impressed enough with anyone one thing to say omg get this. I was impressed with how small the rolls were, especially the hand rolls, and the ability of the server to keep a straight face while he presented the food. I’ve eaten sushi since before it was cool(just so you know how cool I am, mind you) so I’ve had one or two rolls. These were like half the size. The hand rolls were smaller than a handful of french fries and less flavorful. It was just big enough to put a dent on my hunger but not make me full. The kinda meal where you’re like«fuck, I’m still hungry but not hungry enough to justify going somewhere else», but still hungry enough to kick someone’s dog on the street if he smells your shoes. That shitty kinda of hungry. Overall, if you have a groupon, don’t tell them ahead of time because you’re obviously a piece of shit and deserve to die for using it. The food was about worth what we paid, 30 bucks. But the supposed 64 dollar value? Not even close.

Again, it keeps getting worse every time I go. I had the sashimi platter again and this time about 1⁄3 of the fish was not fresh. It was very chewy and I could not finish it all. The tea was very good though. It came in a nice traditional tea pot.

Always good sushi from my few experiences here. The staff is very nice. For food, the spicy edamame is pretty amazing as is the selections of rolls. For a change, the goat cheese sub-dried tomato roll is good. Plus, they have fried ice cream(or did when I was there at least)!

I come here for lunch because I work near by. Two thumbs up, fast service and good sushi. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a fast lunch. Don’t know about dinner though.

I have never written a review in my life, like I am THAT lazy but this place is atrocious!!! WORSTFOODOFMYLIFE! They would pay me to eat here again and I still wouldn’t consider it because I’ll be scared I’ll get sick from their horrible food. After my first bit of the first roll, I actually started to feel nauseous. So so bland and sickening. The service we got was also ridiculous, the skinny lady that everyone has complained about here is a terrible hostess, eyeing us down and saying that our tip needed to be more despite the most horrendous service I have ever had in an establishment. PLEASEDONOTGOHERE!!! It needs to get shut down.

Attempted to make a reservation with the groupon deal, I was told that they could slot me in only if I didn’t use the groupon. Totally outrageous, stay away.

This place is amazing. Located on a quiet block with kind, patient service– food is well presented, quick, and good. But wait… The best part. BYOB! My boyfriend and I come here with our favorite bottle of wine every few weeks. Sushi always tastes fresh and never fishy. I highly recommend the tiger & sex on the beach roll.

This place looked somewhat promising from the outside, but it wasn’t. First, the waitress brought us the wrong menu. She gave us an incomplete menu, with only a few items on it. When we asked were these the only dinner options, the cook in the back yelled«Give them the full menu.» Then the food came. None of the cooks were wearing anything to cover their hair, so I was concerned I might find something in my food(luckily didn’t). But the food was nothing special, perhaps the most average sushi I have ever eaten in my life. I would not come back here. If looking for a much better sushi place in the area, try Amura or Shoga, not here.

PART1— Hi, My boyfriend and I went to Fujiyama on Sunday 9⁄27 to use one of our Groupon vouchers. We’ve been many times in the past and never had a problem… that is until last night(Sunday 9⁄27). Long story short, they were too busy answering the phones to fulfill takeout orders and neglected the customers at the tables, including my boyfriend and I. When we first arrived, the tables were all full accept for a few. We were promptly seated but unfortunately our dining experience was horrible. Christine(the owner) took our food order which included 1 appetizer, 2 hand rolls(which we always pay an extra $ 1.00 to have them sliced) and 2 specialty rolls. We placed our order accept we weren’t sure which would be our 2nd specialty roll so Christine was going to put in our order and return to our table later to find out what our 2nd specialty roll would be. She told us that we couldn’t have the hand rolls sliced, although we have been dining at their establishment many many times and they’ve always accommodated us. Christine said she would do it for us this time after I told her I would slice the rolls myself… A little while later, aside from our negimaki appetizer, my boyfriend and I realized that the rest of our food wasn’t being prepared by the sushi chef. Instead, the restaurant’s phones were ringing off the hook with take out orders & the sushi chef was toiling away fulfilling those orders since I saw the food was being put into black plastic take out containers. At this point, we were now at our table for almost an hour and a half with only a 5 piece negimaki appetizer in our stomachs. Although the owner(Christine) took our original order and I told her I’d slice the roll myself, she walked away leading us to believe that was cool… that we’d be getting the 2 hand rolls as «regular» rolls instead of «hand» rolls. I flagged another female waitress to come over to complete our order so we could tell her what our 2nd specialty roll would be and she gave us the same hard time re: the hand rolls to which I told her that the owner(Christine) already agreed to but the waitress wasn’t having it so I told her to bring Christine back over. Keep in mind, the phones were ringing off the hook while others customers were expressing their dismay about the service as well — two other tables of customers telling me they will NEVER return. I saw the lone sushi chef(who is Christine’s husband) was continuing to fulfill the take out orders because I saw they were being placed into the black plastic containers instead of porcelain platters. I again asked a different male waiter(there are 2 + Christine who is the owner), if he could check on the status of our order since it had been almost an hour and a half since we sat at our table. I heard the sushi chef scream out to the enquiring waiter that he didn’t have our order and I then saw the female waitress running to answer another phone call. I was livid and told the waitress to hang up the phone and to service the in-house customers. I asked her why the sushi chef didn’t have our order so she pulled out her pad and saw she never gave it to him so she asked us to confirm our order and then proceeded to lecture us again about the hand rolls so I told Christine(the owner) that after waiting an hour and a half for our food, that she should do the right thing by us and to make the hand rolls the sliced up way and that I would cut them myself… that we’d be coming there for at least 20 visits & asked her why we were being treated so poorly. When using the Groupon, we’ve never had a problem with having our hand rolls sliced & we have always paid extra for that service without a hitch at $ 1.00 extra per roll. I told her she should be happy about the phone business they were getting but that it wasn’t cool to not give the in-house customers the same attention. I told her that waiting for over an hour and a half for our food & that our order wasn’t even given to the sushi chef wasn’t professional. I could see Christine was stressed out and was scurrying back and forth to the kitchen and to the front to answer the phones and back… I rarely ever get upset about food service but last night was an exception. From my line of sight at our table I could see that the sushi chef was making«regular» «seaweed on the outside» hand rolls for us so I went up to him to tell him that I ordered the sliced versions of the 2 hand rolls. He literally yelled at me but his wife(Christine) told him to change them and to prepare the sliced versions of those same hand rolls. When we received our platter with the 2 rolls + the 2 specialty rolls it was obvious that the sushi chef unwrapped one of the rolls from the seaweed they were originally prepared in and re-rolled it and sliced it because the seaweed was on the outside. Being that we’ve eaten at Fujiyama on numerous occasions, the shrimp tempura roll comes prepared with the rice on the outside…(cont’d)

This restaurant is a jewel in the UES. I can’t believe I didn’t eat here before Coz I walk pass through this place every single day. We ordered lobster tail and shrimp pop corn for starters. It was breathtaking. My sister ordered the avocado and lobster salad and she highly recommends it(though the portion was too small). My brother in law ordered udyon and he loved it. We also ordered the sushi sashimi platter which was super fresh. But the main hero of the night was the cod fish. It was simply amazing. The fish was light and flaky and the sauce was just right. I highly recommend the cocktails at this place. Apart from wine we also ordered the lychee cocktail and fujiyama cocktail and it was one of this best cocktails we ever had. I am definitely going back there specially for some cod fish.

Had the Scoutmob offer. Food is ok — nothing to rave home about. Service could be improved. Lag time between courses was a bit too long

Went here with a groupon, and left very satisfied. We had the spider roll for appetizer, tiger roll, out of control roll, and crunchy lobster roll, vegetable hand roll. All were delicious. Would definitely come back again.

Decent cheap Japanese food on the upper east side. Food takes a while to come out if you go there with a large party, but overall service is excellent and quality is decent.

I needed some good sushi and that’s what I got overhere. It’s a small place but with a good location. Good selection of sushi and sake. Price wise it was pretty good in relation of the quality of the sushi.

1-star for the food. The dining experience was horrible. We visited on a Sunday afternoon. As per the purchased Groupon deal, we had: 1 appetizer(up to $ 12 each) 2 special rolls(up to $ 15 each) 2 hand rolls(up to $ 11 each) I ordered a soda and my date had tap water. At the end of our meal, the female Chinese server presented our table check of $ 6.50. The soda was $ 2.00 and we were taxed $ 4.50 for the meal. We paid, and left 30% gratuity from the amount we paid that day. The female Chinese server demanded more gratuity and returned the check to us. I wish the female Chinese server could have respected us as customers who enjoyed their food instead of rudely harassing us for more money. I would never recommend Fujiyama to anyone!

Never again will I come back to this place. My dining experience was ruined by the woman server and the awful awful food. I paid for a groupon deal… PAID…and these are the items I included: 1 appetizer(up to $ 12 each) 2 special rolls(up to $ 15 each) 2 hand rolls(up to $ 11 each) I also ordered a soda which was not part of the groupon deal. However because the soda was not part of the groupon deal they needed to open a check on a $ 2.00 soda… understandable. What they forget to mention was the tax on the $ 2.00 soda was $ 4.50! Are you kidding me?!! I paid for the bill which came to $ 6.50 on a $ 2.00 soda… mind you I already paid for the groupon deal as well… The woman server actually had the gall to tell me that my tip was not enough, that the tip is based on the total total amount that I would have paid($ 55.00) had I not used the groupon deal. Meaning my tip is not based on the $ 6.50 but the $ 55.00! I already paid for the Groupon deal so why should I have to base my tip off of that amount. That’s BS! And she basically stood/hover over my table waiting for me to leave a tip. When I tried to leave she basically harassed me and stood in my way saying I need to leave a tip. Are you kidding me? I don’t need to do s***! I would have left a tip had she not stood at my table watching me and waiting for me to leave one. The food was awful, tasted old… ugh Worst experience ever. All of that for mediocre sushi.

We had a Groupon for an appetizer, 2 hand rolls, and 2 specialty rolls. The portions were very small especially for the specialty rolls compared to other places. I would not go out of my way to eat in this restaurant.

It took them awhile to get our order even though there was only one table of customers before us. We had the groupon deal so we got to try one appetizer, two hand rolls and two special rolls. Appetizer: braised short ribs. It was okay but for the price definitely the portion was very tiny. It’s not worth11dollars for four tiny pieces of meat. Handroll: spicy tuna & crunchy lobster. Crunchy lobster did not have much flavor. It was quite salty. Special roll: Golden dragon roll & out of control roll. These were good. The out of control had mango in it and it balanced out and was very flavorful. It was an okay dinner but i had a slight stomachache after and didn’t feel well. I could go here again but would rather try different places.
