Classic no-frills puertorican and Dominican food. Super delicious and flavorful. Small place that gets toasty bc the kitchen is right there

This spot is awesome and deserves recognition for the amazing food being served. The customer service is also on point. The best thing about this spot is that it’s small enough to feel like family but large enough to feel comfortable as you’re eating. Definitely one of my favorite spots for bomb food.

Service was friendly and quick. Limited English. Clean place and very reasonably priced. Food was ready in a few minutes. The food was GREAT! I had the stewed chicken with red beans and my friend had the stewed beef with black beans. The rice was amazing and the meat was tender. We also had the sweet plantains and those were Fabulous! I would definitely eat here again and would recommend it to my friends.

I’m so fortunate that I discovered this great place near my workplace. The food here is just 5⁄5. You can simply look at the pictures that other people posted to see all the assortment of dishes available and how delicious they look. You’ll also notice that it’s a very small restaurant, and it’s kind of hard to take a seat inside. Luckily for me, there were a few empty seats when I got there. Because of the small space, and the lack of outdoor seating areas around, it is an inconvenience for those who want to simply hang around and eat. So for that, I take one star off. I had my eye on the Daily Specials part of the menu. They were very nicely priced. I ordered a large size stewed cod fish with rice and black beans. I enjoyed every bite. I highly recommend everyone to check this place out. I will come here again in the future to try out the other specials. For some reason, I forgot how to tip today by accident and tipped less than I should’ve. If you are the business owner reading this, I apologize. I will tip you generously next time.

A wonderful little place. Everyone is friendly, and the prices are low. I had the beef stew with yellow rice and red beans. A good sized portion, and delicious!

Great food; it makes you feel like home. Great entrees and desserts, for very reasonable prices. After being here you will feel so pleased that you will feel like going to shake your body and dance some salsa. World class service provided by its owners and assistants. A must-attend restaurant if you like latin/caribbean/homestyle food. I recommend this place without any kind of reservation.

Love this place for the occasional take-out. Get the chicken stew over rice w/beans. Get the chicharron mofongo which comes with a small side of soup. Cheap and they pack a substantial amount of food.

I was excited to try Gena’s based on the positive reviews and folks claiming it’s authenticity. It was sadly disappointing. I went with a takeout of oxtail, and should have spoken up when I saw the server was reaching to the bottom of the pan, as what I ended up with was the tiniest 3 «pieces» of oxtail, which was really 2 pieces and the third was just the bone with no meat! Really? Knowing this was my first time there, I would have thought the server would have just said we really don’t have any more left, or if this is was they believe constitutes an order — then they should get even fewer stars. The little mouthfuls of the oxtail I did get to try did taste good. Rice and black beans were quite bland — nothing special, although the rice was fresh and fluffy. Was this an off day? or what am I missing?

Ordered food and it came with melted plastic stuck to the cheese. They offered me a 45 minute wait to replace it. I said no thanks, so the girl offers me a credit. Apparently the credit ran out after the weekend because when I called to use it today. I was told I couldn’t, that it was only good for Monday. I told her that the other girl didn’t tell me that, she didn’t care. Last time I order from this place.

Food was okay but the older woman who serves the food is very rude and completely unprofessional. Was yelling at me and my wife who decided to eat in the restaurant instead of take out like we originally planned. A modern day soup nazi for Latin food. What kind of business would tell customers they can’t eat the food they purchased in the restaurant that served it.

My favorite place in the east village for some quick food. It’s so cheap too! The family combos are a great deal and the food is amazing.

This place is tiny but busy. Holy cow! She’s got herself a nice little joint serving her PR island food. And it’s delicious! This is a no frills place but has authentic PR food. I love All Latin food but it must be amazing… as in homemade recipes the way mama and abuelita make it!!! I ate the goat and it was fantastic. The rice and black beans were seasoned and cooked to perfection. Next time I want oxtail. Perfect spot for a quick lunch and cheap too. The aroma permeating in the street is what drew me in. Keep it up guapa. You deserve it. Gracias y mucha suerte! Abrazos fuerte.

Authentic dominican and puerto rican food. I went there last night for pick up after a few bottles of wine(drunken greediness) and as soon as We walkedin we were greeted woth the smell of rotisserie chicken and of course that made us even more ravenous. We ordered the pernil, baked chicken and pollo guisado which is stewed chicken. They also have stewed goat but i dont eR goat from just anywhere. The pernil was AMAZING like i almost barfed it up just to eat it again like spongebob. The baked chicken was good but ive had much better but still good. The pollo guidado i didnt have to much of that but it was good. Dont think id order it agaib though. They were out of oxtails when i came :( Overall I would deffinitly come back and I am even contemplating on going there in a few hrs.

Got take out here and enjoyed my food. Rice and beans with pernil asado. Rice and beans were good albeit a bit too salty. Pernil asado was moist tender and delicious. I appreciated that she gave me a chunk of the crispy skin(everyone knows that the best part of roasted pig!) also had a side of sweet plantains that were also good. Perfect combo for a meal.

I stumbled across this gem while visiting my sister in the Beth Israel Hospital a few blocks up. It is a small place and easily can be passed if you are not paying attention.(HAHAHA happened to me) When you walk in you are greeted by the lady in the front. This is a small and cozy place with a few seats and tables and stools by the counter. I took food for take out and thought it was done in a reasonable time. I order the Sancocho and Filet Of Sole with satueed onions and salad. Very very good and whenever I am in the neighborhood I will definitely go to this spanish spot.

First time trying Dominican food and it was average-above average. I wasn’t extremely overwhelmed with how good it was, but I still quite enjoyed my meal. Upon arriving at this place, you’ll notice how small it is and you wonder whether your party of 4 or 5 will even fit. But, you will. Some lady sat us down at a small table and handed us their takeout menu. we each got some stewed meat and most of us enjoyed our food. The beef was a little overcooked as was the cod fish, but the oxtail was very very tender and good. I also highly recommend getting the Mofongo! It was really yummy with the gravy sauce thing that came with it. I believe it’s some sort of mashed up plantains with meat. We ate a lot of food and were pretty stuffed, and we barely put a dent in our wallets. This place is very affordable to say the least. The service wasn’t the best, but I’m not complaining given that it seems like most people get takeout here.

Gena’s is a tiny establishment(4 stools and and 3 two seaters), that I would imagine caters mostly to take-out orders. When I came for a quick dinner I was the only one here besides the three workers and one lady I believe was just there socializing with them. Most meals here including daily specials are $ 10 – 15 but I got the pork mofongo(about $ 7 after tax). Unsurprisingly the mofongo was made to order which is one of the reasons I love it. This was the best mofongo I’ve had yet. It was moist, flavorful, and they give a really nice portion of it. I could have perhaps used a little more meat in it but overall I was very happy with it. If you want to feel super full and have some real authentic Puerto Rican/Dominican food at a good price and don’t mind eating at such a small hole in the wall or getting your food to go then Gena’s is a great option.

Located on 1st Avenue between 12th and 13th streets, this tiny eatery will leave your mouth watering. I got there and was greeted by a nice older woman. It smelled so good in there. I tried sitting on the seat, but the place was jist too darn small! I ordered the Rabo Guisado with arroz amarillo, habichuelas rojas and maduros. My total order came up to $ 16.06. I arrived home and enjoyed every piece of it. The beans were so good! The oxtail was very tasty, but too salty. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it. The gravy that accompanied it was salty also. The rice was nicely cooked and the sweet plantains were the best! I had to eat one in the train station lol. My plate was large too. I have to rate this a 4. I’ll come back and try something else too. The food was very, very delicious.
