George’s European Tailor

Yes George is cantankerous –but it’s just his way. gruff! He’s actually fun. he’s old school. If you’re nice to him, he’ll be kind. he’s a no bullshit man. The work is excellent-​not cheap but worth it! A dying art. he’s Greek and a proud man.

We had some difficult alterations to make that required some creative tailoring to get a fancy evening gown back in shape for a big soirée event. Perfectly sewn and re-​hemmed to suit the young lady wearing it. Very elegant and good as new. Many thanks to George and his team!

I wouldn’t recommend going to George under any circumstance. The guy is an ass.
Did he perform the alterations that I had requested? Sure. Did he screw anything up? No. It was just a truly awful experience.
I requested to have the suit tailored and to have all of my measurements taken for. After I made the request for all of my measurements he said, «Why do you need all of your measurements?»
I said, «Just so I have them on hand and know what they are.»
His response was, «So you aren’t buying anything?»
I said, «No but I plan on buying things in the future»
He said, «Well if you aren’t buying anything then I don’t know why you need them.»
Like dude… I’m paying you $ 125 to tailor my damn suit. I’m giving you three full weeks to get the alterations done. Give me five minutes of your time, measure me without bitching and moaning and we’ll get on with our lives.
If you ever want to feel like you’re ruining somebody’s day by paying them for their services — go to George.
Please note I said that he does not accept credit cards, but he does very begrudgingly accept debit cards.
George — if you read your Unilocal reviews… PLEASE accept my apologies. I did not mean to offend you by requesting for you, the tailor, to help me figure out what my appropriate measurements are. I hope this review ensures that you never get another nasty customer like me.

The problem I had with my down coat was that the zipper did not work, it kept sticking. So I had taken it to this place as there were good reviews. However, I go in and tell him the issue, he examines it for about ¹⁰⁄₁₅ seconds then said he does not have replacement zippers and I would need to buy my own and he would fit it for $ 90. So $ 90 plus a cost of long zipper for my coat, don’t think so. I take it and then look for another place on the UES and I come across Garment Care on 84St. I take it in, again he examines it and as I am talking to him about how it sticks, he takes out his pliers and he then says do you use your other 2 zippers on the top pockets and I replied no. In that short time, a few minutes he had fixed it with the pliers. Cost nothing. A few weeks later it stopped working again, so I took it back to him and he switched the zipper pulls in a couple of hours and charged me $ 7. Big change from $ 90+ Its been working great and shouldn’t have any issues again. I wont go to George’s again.

George is the best! My husband and I have had numerous items tailored here. Everything comes back impeccably altered and on schedule. He is also a real character, with lots of funny anecdotes and a warm, welcoming manner. It’s a pleasure to stop by (when the store isn’t too crowded) and wonderful to know that we can trust him with any tailoring job!

George is knowledgeable and to the point. I trust him.

I’ve never had an OTR suit altered to such a beautiful extent. George took a $ 300 Tommy Hilfiger suit and turned it into a work of art. Thank you George, and I’m sorry for being a difficult customer.

I recently took a full-​length dress to George for shortening and letting out. The job was not an easy one, but he did it really well. It hadn’t been obvious when I first arrived how he was going to be able to get the dress to fit me, but he clearly knew what he was doing and considered all the options carefully (from just letting out several seams to using some of the fabric removed off the bottom to create a new panel).
At first I thought the price he charged was quite high ($ 150), but it might be normal for a high-​end tailor in NYC, which I would consider George. His work was top quality. To be fair, even the rehemming job wasn’t a standard job that anyone could do in ten minutes; the hem needed to be hidden, and I had asked him to leave as much extra fabric there as he could in case I wanted to have it let down a bit in the future. I suspect he spent at least two hours working on the dress, so really $ 150 is totally reasonable. That isn’t even including the 30 minutes he spent with me when I first brought the dress in as he made measurements and figured out how he was going to complete the work or the 15 minutes he spent with me when I picked the dress up and tried it on again. Did he jack up the price a bit because he knew this was an expensive dress he was working on? I can’t rule that out, but in the end I’m glad I didn’t risk having the work done badly by going elsewhere. The work was well worth the $ 150 it cost. (And, yes, he does prefer cash, as other reviewers have mentioned, but that’s not unusual for small business owners in NYC.)
Although I had a pleasant and productive experience with him this one time I went to him, I can see how he could come across as gruff and defensive under other circumstances. That said, each time I visited his store there were people who were clearly regular customers there, which speaks for itself. So does the fact that he was showing me some other dresses he was working on — dresses that cost more than $ 1000. His customers definitely trust him with their high-​end clothing. I would go back to him again for any complicated job, but I might take my easy pant rehemming jobs elsewhere to save a little money.

George took my favorite White House Black Market dress and made it fit me like a glove. He took it from a size 10 to a 4, and it fits perfectly. The whole thing cost me about $ 40, and it was definitely worth it. He was prompt and professional, and now I wear the dress all the time. He’s the best tailor I’ve found in NYC, and I will be taking all my clothing to George from now on!

I too used to go to Hong Kong Tailor Jack, but as that business got too busy, I found George’s on Unilocal and decided to give him a try. I gave them a jumpsuit that was three sizes too big, and though the price they cited might have been on the high side, the alterations required were, admittedly, complicated — and after George and his team worked on the piece, it fit me so well that I might as well have been born wearing it. The best NYC tailor I’ve found yet.

When you want the better pieces in your wardrobe tailored correctly, George is the best I’ve seen in a long time. A little pricy & a little abrupt, but he knows how to do the job right (and on time) the first time.

This guy does amazing work! Slightly expensive, but reasonable considering the quality. Definitely going back for all of my future tailoring needs!

First let me say they do amazing work. The reason I can’t give them a full 5 stars is because they are extremely expensive. I paid half as much for a tailor in LA with results just as good. I suppose we all need to pay rent which is why they charge so much. I would really only go if its something really important or you have a gang of loot.

Went with 11 items the ladies took excellent care of me, loved how they paid special attention to each customer you feel very at home! I’m very confident my 11 peices will turn out fantastic!
They are doing major work… were talking taking in 2 — 3 sizes of premium suits etc!
Prices are super high but in the end it should be worth considering I won’t have to be buying new clothes.

It’s very simple: George is the best. Just ask him, he’ll tell you. After losing 30 pounds, I brought in an old suit to see if George could make it look like I bought it at my current weight. He charged me an eyebrow raising $ 190, but what he gave me was nothing less than an entirely new suit. Aside from two nearly invisible seems on either side of the jacket, there is no evidence the thing was ever touched. Given his pricing structure, George should probably be used only for the most challenging of tasks. But if you need some serious work done, you’d be ill-​served to go anywhere else.

George is great. I had him take in a pencil skirt and he did an excellent job. He is friendly and his prices are reasonable, if not the cheapest. I live 10 blocks away, too, but now that I’ve found him he’ll be my go-​to tailor.

I was going to take my coat to HK Tailor Jack but apparently he’s gotten long on attitude and short on service after his article in New Yorker so I decided to go to George’s based on people’s reviews. The service is great. I had the sleeves tightened on my Dior Homme trench coat and the seams were tight, the fit is exact. He’s very skilled and professional.

George is a great tailor, very throrough and prices are very reasonable. I live 10 blocks away but I always make the trip because I love the service and the results!

Best tailor in the Upper East Side! I had a very bad experience at another tailor (a few blocks north of George’s) and then went back to George so that he could fix the horrible job. George fixed everything and made my suit fit perfectly! (He even broke open the shoddy seam job, that the other tailor did, right in front of my eyes and showed me the crap that they left inside — not to mention all the extraneous, shedding threads.)
I’m always satisfied by his work and craftsmanship and will only go to him now. He’s a nice and honest guy who’ll work to make his clients happy. Says he’s been in the business for around 40 years? It shows when a guy respects his craft.
(By the way, he’s not at 87^th St anymore as it’s listed here on Unilocal.He’s on Lexington Ave, cross street at 80^th I think?)
