God’s Love We Deliver

Gods Love We Deliver needs to be renamed Gods Zilla We Develop. This formerly benevolent charity has gotten in bed with big real estate interests to create a massive tower that will overshadow all the neighborhood parks and even the children’s swimming pool at Vesuvio Playground. Don’t be fooled by their PR machine. Don’t give them your time or your money. It’s a feel-​good club for stars and politicos that is destroying the South Village. I’d give them zero stars, but the scale doesn’t go that low.

Great place to volunteer. Times available to work with any schedule. Wonderful way to meet new people and give back.

What can I say, it’s an amazing organization with incredible facilities, heart and people. I’ve been volunteering here for almost 2 years and I wouldn’t trade the time I’ve spent there or the people I’ve met for anything. Keep up the good work!

I love this organization and what they stand for. I volunteered here through NY Cares and loved every minute of it. They are extremely organized. If you have a question, they make you feel comfortable asking. Their kitchen facility is very clean and they strictly enforce sanitation rules (unlike many other organizations and restaurants). I wish I could volunteer here more often, but people love it so much that they have a waiting list for volunteers! Try to sign on if you can though through NYCares or One Brick. You won’t be sorry that you did. Truly a rewarding experience.

This is an AWESOME organization that does everything right. I love the CEO and all of the staff there. Each and every on of the 7,600 volunteers that work there on an annual basis is a bright and shiny dime. I couldn’t be happier to know the wonderful people here and the amazing work they do. Even on Thanksgiving or in mile-​high blizzards, these folks are preparing and elivering meals to those living with life-​threatening illnesses such as HIV/​AIDS, kidney disease, and cancer. Clients can be of any age, and get free referrals and unlimited nutrition counseling. Services are offered regardless of income, and there is and never has been a waiting list. Minimal red tape, you say? Yes please! They even provide support for child care/​elder care so everyone in the family gets the help you need.
Volunteer, ask to come in for a site visit, donate online, do whatever you can to get involved! Love God’s Love.

This is a great organization. I did a project here once through NY Cares. My only mistake was that I wore open toed shoes, which is not allowed because it is a food preparation activity.

What is really great, I think anyways, is that this was Joan River’s charity when she won on Celebrity Apprentice. (Just a bit of trivia).

One of the best nonprofits in NYC, God’s Love We Deliver is doing great things every day for New Yorkers in need.
A nonsectarian organization, God’s Love We Deliver was started in NYC during the height of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. They had a simple mission: bring home-​cooked meals to AIDS patients who were too weak to shop or cook for themselves. Over two decades later, the good people at God’s Love We Deliver continue to bring nutritious, healthy meals to people throughout the five boroughs of NYC, as well as to people living in Newark and Hudson County, N.J., who have life-​altering illnesses.
These illnesses include not only AIDS but cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and any other illness that renders the sufferer too weak to prepare meals or shop for themselves and their families. GLWD will prepare, package and deliver a week’s worth of specially-​prepared lunches, dinners and desserts designed to meet the dietary needs of each client. Vegetarian meals are also available, and for clients with children at home, GLWD will also prepare a week’s worth of healthy breakfasts and dinners for the child in question. In addition, special cakes are also prepared and delivered for clients’ birthdays.
GLWD has no waiting lists and accepts clients regardless of level of income. It is a glorious organization that provides hope to people who in the midst of great suffering might not otherwise have any. I have volunteered in their kitchen and never knew how much fun — yes, fun! — it would be to chop carrots and celery for a soup that was being prepared for the clients. The other volunteers (and it’s the volunteers who help make this organization work the way it does) are a great group of people and represent a whole cross section of NYC life. Celebrities have also thrown their support behind GLWD: Mary J. Blige, Joan Rivers and the late Natasha Richardson all supported the organization’s efforts, and Mayor Bloomberg put on an apron and got to work in the kitchen last Thanksgiving.
A former co-​worker who volunteered for them religiously alerted me to their efforts, and I must say that GLWD does amazing things from their modest-​looking building in downtown Manhattan. In addition to kitchen volunteer work, I have also participated in their annual race in Central Park, held right before Thanksgiving each year. If you can’t commit to volunteering in the kitchen or in any of the other myriad ways in which GLWD employs its volunteers, at least sign up for the race. It’s a beautiful 4-​mile run through the park, and it’s for a great cause. Sign up this fall and get some sponsors — every $ 100 raised provides an ill person with a week’s worth of meals.
As Germaine C. so aptly put it, this organization is a diamond in a tough city. NYC can be hard on people, but I gather it’s even harder to be sick and alone, or just sick in general, in NYC. GLWD brings hope in the form of food to the sick of NYC each day.

I volunteer for them as I am able. They are brilliant! They even teamed up with a play I was in to do a fundraiser. The energy is stellar. Everyone is welcoming. You’re treated like the valuable member of their team, which is exactly what you are!
Everything is done by human hands: no machines that are incapable of putting love and warmth into the life-​giving food they offer to their clients. They also do their best to get donations from local businesses so that you have something to eat before and after your shift.

or (I believe) NYCares to volunteer as you are able. At the very least get the word out about GLWD. Even after a long day at the office I always look forward to the time I’ll spending working for GLWD. I’ve never had a more rewarding volunteer experience.

A fantastic organization! I participated in a fundraising run for them. A few people in the internal administration departments should be fired for lack of professionalism when dealing with vendors, but none the less a great organization.
