Great food and outstanding staff. The bartenders, waitstaff, and the kitchen staff(!) are all really cool. Pulled pork is always a winner, as is the outstanding chili. Artie is a fantastic bartender. Not unusual to see a famous artist or musician enjoying a hassle free drink. Another cool thing is that most of the customers and regulars are nice, friendly and overall very cool people. A+++++

Yes yes yes. Inexpensive little hideaway in NYC. This is the type of place you can only stumble upon in Manhattan.

Hands down my favorite place in New York!!! The food is consistently great. Excellent service, music and conversation. Nothing is contrived. Feels like home. If you are looking for a slice of heaven in NYC stop staring at your phone and get to the great jones café.

Awesome little neighborhood dive, perfect for breakfast, brunch, and cocktails. Met up with some friends that lived nearby. The food looked awesome. I wasn’t hungry, but the bloody mary’s I had were top notch. The tunes in the place were kick-ass too!

This is place OK. I came with a friend for lunch and I think we both enjoyed our meal. The only thing is that our server was odd. Not quite rude but not friendly either. She had an air impatience about her that was annoying. I asked her a question and she didn’t answer, instead pointed to the wall where the menu was written. I would have appreciated a verbal response. The food was decent – cornbread was really good— and affordable. I would come back but I’m not in any real rush to do so. All in all it was fine. Just not mind blowing in any way.

We stumbled upon this gem by accident and what a wonderful accident it was! We were walking by looking for pizza but when we smelled the burgers coming out of the exhaust outside of the restaurant we HAD to go inside. It’s a small, cool spot that has an authentic NOLA vibe to it. We ordered a bacon cheeseburger and it was out of this world! So juicy, cooked to perfection. It was such a delight. Nice brew selection as well. I would absolutely recommend and I would stop by again!

Good Times We wanted to try a place near thePublic Theater that was not outrageously expensive. Great Jones fit the bill. The place is small but comfortable. The menu is on a chalkboard and easy to use. My wife had fried catfish and I, gumbo. Both entrees were excellent. If we had only food our bill was about $ 50. However with drinks and dessert, close to $ 92. For the east village not bad. The wait staff was very pleasant and attentive. I will definitely return. Please note: Amex is not accepted.

By far one of the best burgers(the hickory smoked bacon is life) that I’ve ever had. If you sit at the bar near the kitchen you can watch the magic unfold… or get rolled into a patty to be more specific. But also we had the creole wings… oh…oh…OH… so freaking amazing. Albeit that sauce they come in is not for the faint of heart. It will make you tear up just a little. But for two very good reasons… the heat and the incredible flavor.

Strangely adorable little restaurant with a cool dive-bar type vibe to it. Great Jones Café has some delicious Southern food! I got the Jumbalaya with cornbread, and it was absolutely wonderful. I usually dislike cornbread, but this one was soft and sweet, though not overpoweringly so. The jumbalaya had sausage and chicken in it, and the meat was flavorful and had a nice spicy kick to it. It was $ 15.95 on the menu, so it wasn’t exactly cheap, but it was a great deal of food, and I left feeling very full. The service is also very friendly, and everything is very laid-back. There’s also a bar in this place, so I’d imagine you can come here for a drink or two if you’re not in the mood for food.

Pretty cool spot if you’re looking for some Creole-style food! The restaurant itself has a very Southern vibe to it, with an old school juke box and unassuming bar area — it almost makes you forget that you’re in the heart of NYC! The food itself was quite yummy too! My boyfriend and I came during brunch time, so I got the huevos rancheros with a biscuit and home fries. The home fries and biscuit came as «complimentary» sides, which were quite forgettable(I’ve definitely had way better home fries), but the huevos rancheros were delicious and reminiscent of Southern-style flavors. I also love that it’s just the right amount of food to keep you full, but not too full to the point where you’re nauseated(always a plus point in my book!) All in all, the total bill for 2 people came out to a little over $ 30, which is actually not bad, considering typical NYC brunch prices. Good casual spot to check out with friends or even a date!

It has lasted over 30 years for a reason – it is a rare NYC outpost for Creole food, with reasonable for NYC prices, Blackened catfish was very good, sweet potato fries and jambalaya good and house salad and cornbread ok – too much dressing on the salad and melted butter on the cornbread. It seats perhaps 20 people and does not take reservations, so be prepared to stand waiting and then be cramped sitting. Staff is nice, but giving printed drink menus but not food menus isn’t. Who wants to have to get up – moving adjoining tables, just to read a blackboard? I also did not care for beers being listed on a blackboard without prices – this is the East Village, not Park Avenue, so not all patrons ignore cost.

I really wanted to be blown away by this restaurant seeing that it is considered cajun creole and I love cajun food. Went here on a weekday night around 5ish. The bar was full of happy patrons and there were about 2 tables actually seated and eating. It is a small establishment with about 8 tables give or take and you can actually see the chef behind the bar making the food. This place even has a real jukebox. I love the feeling you get when you walk in and they have this red light that sets the tone. For a moment I forgot I was in NYC and thought I was Nola or something. I ordered the wings as an app which were amazing and finger licking good. They are on the hot side therefore I wouldn’t recommend sharing with someone that has a weak stomach. I had the gumbo as my entrée and it was not good at all. It was extremely dark and had this long after taste. I am not sure if they used too much gumbo file or what but it wasn’t for me. My husband had the poboy sandwich he enjoyed and I did as well. I will most likely give them another try but not the gumbo,

I read the reviews and was expecting something a little more than I found. Not sure what but my exceptions didn’t quite match reality. Of course, it didn’t help that in clearing the table next to us, one lady knocked everything over and to the floor and then 10mins later in coming to serve our drinks, her tray of drinks landed on the table. Our catlike reflexes meant we had leapt away in time so only our table was dowsed. Food wise? The jambalaya was yummy and spicy. Me like! The breakfast plate was very full and neither of us managed to finish, so come hungry is my advice. The Bloody Mary was good and had a nice kick. For a simple cocktail it is interesting how few places can make it well. This was quite good. Overall, it prob deserves 2.5 stars but rounding up because the food was quite good even if the flying drinks and cutlery made for entertainment we could have missed.

The place is tiny, but so are most of the great restaurants in New York. This restaurant was a recommendation through #theHungersons from a young couple who found this as one of their favorite joints after only being in the Big Apple for 3 months. 4 years later, they’re still coming back for more. We ordered the Jambalaya, Gumbo and the wings appetizer. I’d personally come here over and over again just for their wings because their sauce is amazeballs! This totally wins a Hungersons award for being the Best Finger-Licking Appetizer. As for the Jambalaya and Gumbo go, they were very tasty dishes. It’s impressive how spicy they made their Jambalaya without causing me to sweat. Prices are New York reasonable and the service is nothing to rave or complain about. @theHungersons

Great Jones Café is another favorite of my boyfriend from the time he lived in New York City. He talks about it all of the time, so he decided I had to experience it for myself. We headed there on a Saturday night around 7pm, and there were plenty of open tables, which surprised both of us. By the time we left, the place had filled up pretty quickly. They have a very small regular menu posted on the wall, and a huge chalkboard full of the daily specials. I’m not sure how frequently these changes and what are staples, but I’ll still tell you all about what we had. We started our meal off with an order of the wings, which I was so excited to dig into I forgot to photograph! He most often takes about the wings and how they are the best in the city. Well, I hate to admit this, but he’s right(don’t tell him I said that though). The wings come in what I can only describe as a roux like sauce. They are so, so, so good! If you eat here, do not skip out on the wings! They will change your life. For our main meal, I ordered the popcorn shrimp roll, and he got the jambalaya. The popcorn shrimp roll was huge as was the serving of fries. I can normally lick my plate clean, but the wings filled me up and the portion was so huge, I had to surrender with a few fries left on my plate. I refused to let them take away the plate from the wings until I had scooped it all up with fries – that’s how good the sauce was! I had a few bites of the jambalaya, which was also super tasty. The portion looked small, but the dish is so hearty that it will fill you up! If you haven’t been to Great Jones yet, you must check it out, and do not leave with trying the amazing WINGS!

I had a bad meal at Great Jones Café. When I visited the restaurant only the brunch menu was available — I had seen reviews and photos from their regular menu and the food looked and sounded great. The brunch still sounded interesting, and being a Southern food lover, I was excited to try it out. However, my excitement quickly dissipated when the food was placed in front of me. The plate looked like a battle between the South vs. Mexico — and they both lost. This meal was called huevos rancheros: two eggs sunny on a crispy tortilla smothered in salsa and in-between there was rice. There was also sour cream and for the two sides I got cheddar grits and corn bread. Sounds good… but. The salsa tasted from a bottle The rice tasted like Uncle Ben’s flavored rice(with the powder packet) The corn bread was stale and dry The grits were bland(but I know they generally are — had tons of it in South Carolina) The whole meal was bland, artificial-tasting and Taco Bell could have done a better job. Oh, there was cheese on the tortilla — and again, got totally lost. All this for $ 15.20 before tip! Ouch! There was some good: friendly service, efficient, and they have WiFi.

I’ll always be a fan why? It was one of my locals, so local I used to think this was my house. I knew nearly all the jukebox selections and my ex & I never needed to check the chalkboard for food, we already knew what was there. This is still a winner. Great food. Lunch, dinner, late night. It’s a permanent fixture in my book. Recently had the Jambalya… tasted just like it used to. Home!

*** Delicious food, Friendly staff, Great experience *** I ordered the Jambalaya and was very impressed. Extremely filling and delicious. We sat at the bar, which is why I’m knocking it down one star. Otherwise, it’s a small restaurant with a great selection of menu items.

The clam strips appetizer was delish! Just the right amount of breading! And the tartar sauce was on point! Jambalaya hits the spot, especially with that jalapeño cornbread. The beef in the broth was soft and the shrimp was still crunchy. A bit spicy, just a heads up :)

I have been twice for brunch and dinner and it was OK both times. I really wanted to love this place because I feel NY is seriously lacking in the Southern food category. Every time I go the the South, I am reminded how great the food in the south is, South Carolina FTW! Southern food is all about low and slow, too bad New York is all about high and fast lol So I guess it’s kinda damned out of the gate lol The food: Louisiana Jambalaya– with cast iron cornbread and fried egg. I thought this dish was good, but for the first few bites, it gets too repetitive. I think it’s a good dish to share, the cornbread was nice, the fried egg didn’t offer much. Eggs Bohemia w/Kale, chicken apple sausage, cheddar and red pepper. This was a special for the day and it was pretty meh, it was scrambled eggs with stuff in it. I thought the eggs were over and I wasn’t crazy about the kale nor sausage.
