We went here on a whim because it looked cute as we were walking by. Sadly, it was all downhill from there! The wine list was terrible — we ordered a Rosso di Montalcino, which is normally a safe bet; at first we thought it just needed to open up, but it turned out that it was so bad that we literally could not drink it. It was the first time I’ve ever left wine on the table! The food was not much better. My friend and I split the arugula salad, which maybe had a teensy bit of olive oil but no dressing. I got the tagliatelle, and the sauce was dry and tasted a tad burnt. My friend’s chicken was overcooked and dry. The only saving grace was that there was gluten-free pasta for my husband, but that is not enough to get us back here, with so many other better Italian restaurants in the city. The service was slow and it took ages for our entrees to come out of the kitchen. At one point, our waitress came over to ask how everything was, and when I said we were still waiting for our entrees, she said«Oh they haven’t come out yet?» As though she had already delivered them, we had eaten them, and she had cleared the plate, and was just checking to see if we needed anything else. The people who work here seem nice, but you have to do a better job on at least the food to compete in NYC — even over on Avenue C.

I ate here last night. Had the lamb ragu pasta, polenta with mushrooms and a bite of the duck ragu gnocchi. Man this place is good.

Came to this neighborhood spot with my bf and a friend after a recommendation from a coworker. Two of my favorite foods are Mexican and Italian but I wasn’t so sure about having them at the same time. But when haven’t you wanted guacamole as an appetizer? I was hesitant about basil in guacamole but it turned out to be a nice touch and sort of ties it all together. We also shared some delicious pork tacos that are among the best I’ve had in NYC. We ended the meal with nice homemade pasta — tagliatelle, pappardelle and gnocchi. The waitress was friendly and showed us pictures of the specials that night that she had taken on her phone. Nice touch that showed a level of care for the food. It wasn’t very busy on a Friday night. It would be nice to see a few more people there to add to the ambiance but at the same time I hope not too many people discover this gem!

Small wonderful restaurant with friendly service and phenomenal food. Special yellow watermelon, tomato, basil and goat cheese salad. Tried one of the braise pork and peach tacos. Delicious spaghetti with calamari and prosciutto. Pasta cooked perfectly with just the right amount of bite. Had a lovely evening. Don’t miss this gem!

Been here twice. Both times the food has been amazing. Recommend the guacamole and duck ragu gnocchi– delicious! I knocked it down a star because the service started out great and super attentive with one waitress(didn’t get her name but she’s very nice and charming) but as soon as they seated a few more tables it’s as if we were last on their list to check up on and the next waitress wasn’t anywhere near as pleasant. We sat with empty plates, wine glasses and water until I had to wave over a waitress to ask to please get us more water. Was not a fan of that part but otherwise a nice spot for good food/wine.

oh no. I so wanted to like this place given that it has cute outdoor seating and is on my block. but the food was so very disappointing. we had the standard salmon Benedict — the salmon tasted WAY off. also had the carbonara which was scrambled eggs mixed into spaghetti. they were fresh in color. there are a lot of ways to do carbonara but I’ve never seen a place get it so wrong.

Not my type to write a complaint but sadly this was a very disappointing experience. Being an Celebrity Italian Chef working in New York for the past 18 years, I decided to give it a try as my nephew was celebrating his birthday. We were craving pasta. Being a party of five, as we arrived with reservation, the restaurant was half full. We respectfully asked for a table on the sidewalk as it was available. Being told it was reserved, we accepted to sit inside. The table outside was however NEVER seated the whole evening. The toasts for the appetizer with taleggio and figs were burned, and taleggio barely present. The guacamole came out greyish. Fresh parpadelle was well overcooked and overly dry. Houdini must have taken the tomato sauce away from the Spaghetti Pomodoro… And be aware of the 18% gratuity added to the check! Being a restaurant owner, I am a speechless.

I love this place. I recommend it to everyone. Maristella and Esteban(the Italian and Mexican sources of this fusion) are gifted chefs who know flavor combinations and quality food — if you can eat a full meal and not feel gross and overfull you know the food was well-made. The prosecco mojito is one of my favorites, as is the cilantro pesto, and the steak tacos — I think they have parmesan and arugula… Honestly I’ve never had a bad dish here. I’ve been going regularly since it opened. Such a cool vibe, delicious food, innovative combinations that totally work… And the fact that it’s dedicated to their daughter and each corner of the restaurant has a meaning, and all the words along the wall have special meaning — it makes it that much more awesome.

I’ve been to numerous restaurants in NYC. Low and high priced places. This is by far one of my favorites. They mix Italian and Mexican cuisine perfectly. Their food is delicious and the two owners are extremely nice and attentive. I love the huitlacoche raviolis and the chocolate cake with fig ice cream. I will bring everyone that visits NYC here.

Love the food concept of Mexican & Tuscany fusion. Food is really nice. Atmosphere is great with the renovations(we have been coming here since they opened). One of the owners works the kitchen while the other seats you and takes your order. Love places where the owners are actually working the place & not just hanging out and barking orders to their staff.

Stopped by on a whim with my flatmate and my boyfriend after being out all day and my god, I’ve never been gladder. I haven’t had homemade pasta this good since I was in Florence! I highly recommend the tagliatelle — the gaminess of the lamb, combined with the chewy pasta was absolute heaven. My dining buddies ordered the gnocchi and pappardelle and were equally as impressed. For appetizers, we got the smoked meat tasting platter –olives were delicious(and I’m really not an olive person) and I especially enjoyed the prosciutto and chicken pâté. Surprisingly there was only one other occupied table that night(we ate at 7pm), but the atmosphere was intimate and cozy, and the staff were all extremely nice. Would definitely come back — they deserve a huge amount of success for such delicious food. We got to meet the chef and owner– they were so adorable.

I was getting ready for my second dinner on Saturday night when I walked into Matilda’s, thinking, how can I survive another bit? Well. I not only survived another bite, but I survived an appetizer, entrée, and(estimating conservatively) half a bottle of red wine. Although my polenta was slightly overcooked, I obviously lost all self control upon first bite. Highly recommended. PS — Ask for the table in the back right corner. Might be near the bathroom, but your group will have by far the best conversation in the restaurant.

Just came home from spending an amazing time at Matilda. This place has it all, from great service, great food and amazing atmosphere. The portions was just right, when I finished I was so full. My girls and I ordered different plates and we tasted each other’s food. I tasted everything from the guacamole and chips, the lasgna, the penne with sausage, gnocchi with duck and pork sirloin in sauce with mash. Everything was so delicious. My girls and will definitely be back. You can’t go wrong with going here !

When I eat at Matilda I wonder why there aren’t more Mexican and Italian fusion places. ITMAKESSOMUCHDELICIOUSSENSE. Tomatoes, cheese, carbohydrates — they all fit together in beautiful harmony. I can’t tell you how I first heard about Matilda or really even explain why I love Matilda the way that I do… I just do. After the first time that I went, I convinced one of my friends to have her birthday dinner here. Did you know that you needed basil in your guacamole? Because you do. Matilda’s guacamole is just AMAZING. Also, it’s never super crowded and it’s a pretty relaxed experience. I think I’ve ended up talking to at least one of the owners every time I’ve been. The Ravioli In Salsa Di Huitlacoche is fricking amazing. It’s whole wheat ravioli with a huitlacoche, corn and pico de gallo sauce. SOGOOD. I can occasionally be a creature of habit… so I’ve had the ravioli probably three times. Oops. Though my friends assure me that the quesadilla and tacos they’ve had are also quite tasty. Sidenote: if you don’t know exactly what huitlacoche are — do yourself a favor and don’t Google it. Just accept that they are mushrooms and leave it at that. I was happier just knowing that they were tasty. My innocence is gone, but maybe you can save yours.

Italian and Mexican fusion sounds absolutely strange, but it works. I loved my spaghetti with calamari — it had pico de gallo too, which sounds really strange with a pasta dish, but it was delicious. My only complaint is for $ 16, I expected a heaping plate, not the small portion I got. Service was good, however it’s a little out of the way to get to.

My friend Nick has been raving about Matilda for about 2 years so I decided to make a reservation here for dinner for a group of 8(and easily made a reservation on opentable the day of). Unfortunately I was completely underwhelmed by my experience here. The margaritas were the worst I have ever tasted and our table sent them back for mojitos(which tasted much better in comparison). For dinner I ordered the quesadilla, while others ordered the tortilla pizza, the ravioli, fajita, and salmon dishes. My quesadilla lacked any flavor and was way too small. The salmon, my friends said was pretty un-edible. The wait staff was very nice and patient with us and they were willing to easily split our check. Unfortunately I will probably never come back here because the food was just not that tasty and definitely not worth the price.

I cant say I like it a lot but it deserves a 3.5 star. I like the concept of Mexican with my favorite Italian. Also, I love spicy food so this should be heaven for me. My husband got a coupon to come here so we got to sample their appetizer and entrée at decent price. He got a Burrata Con Pomodori, which essentially is the Mexican-Italian fusion of tomato with Mozzarella cheese. It is OK. The tomatoes are sauteed but I prefer the fresh sliced tomatoes better. I got two tacos to start; one has shrimp and the other is braised lamb. They are pretty good but are on the small side. Neither is spicy for me. For entrée, I ordered their beloved spaghetti with prosciutto and calamari. It is pretty creamy and they were generous with the prosciutto and calamari. I do have to agree with other Unilocalers here. It is not very salty. My husband’s dish, short ribs came in great presentation, especially the potatoes. Then again, the potatoes lacks flavor and the steak is kind of blend too. The service is very family style and is kind of slow although they are very nice. We were waiting around for our check for a while. If they can spice it up and make it a little saltier, I think the food will turn out great.
