Looking for a hairdresser can be the most stressful, tedious, cumbersome ordeal ever!
It took me 3 hairdressers in NYC since being back in the tri-​state for the past 2 yrs. Everybody thinks they are the best just because they have been washing hair and pressing it for the past ‘xyz’ years. That’s NOT what makes you the best in my book.
I’m looking for someone who can differentiate hair types/​grades, products that work for each individual, has «growing hands», know how to STYLE to an individuals face, and truly cares about hair — meaning they don’t just stop at doing it. They continue their education by attending hairs shows, expos, reading — really knowing their craft. I’m not in the market for the best weaver of fake hair, but somebody who can grow mine.
Jamal embodies most of the above. He is such a sweetheart — patient and cares about the end result of your hair and his performance. My review is based on 3 visits, which included a trim on one. I am super hesitant to let any hairdresser cut my hair, unless they truly know what they are doing — HE DOES!
I, and others, have seen amazing results; my hair has grown, the texture is soft, and it looks amazingly healthy.
I travel from NJ to see him, which I would not do for a subpar/​mediocre hairdresser.

Jamal’s initial warmth and stand-​out consultation put me at immediate ease. I was confident that I’d walk out of the salon feeling extra and brand-​new. And with beautifully flowing hair, I got three compliments in just seven blocks. This is my new stylist and I know that my hair will get healthier and healthier without sacrificing gorgeousness!

If you have natural hair, Jamal is a must! He understands hair textures, great hair care, and how to achieve that bone straight look without a relaxer or damaging amount of heat. HIs trims are also BOMB — trust that you’ll leave the salon with shape and body. He also has a great energy and very patient — best experience I’ve had in my 6 years being in NYC and one of 2 people in the world that I trust to do my hair WELL!

I started going to Jamal in 2011 almost a year after I went natural. I am still a returning client of his and I LIVE IN BOSTON! I moved to Boston a year ago and after experiencing two completely incompetent hairdressers, I found myself back in Jamal’s chair. Yes, I traveled 4 hours via the bus to have my hair done by him and then 4 hours back all in one day and I would do it again. This guy is BEYOND talented and really understands my hair. I ALWAYS get compliments and have referred tons of friends. My only hesitancy in writing this review is that the secret will be out. Ladies, you have found a true gem in the city!

I went to Jamal almost two weeks ago because my hair begged me (we were loooong overdue for this intervention haha). Got there at 10AM and Jamal was already there waiting (shocked that a salon actually opened up before 12!). He listened to me and all my hair woes, and even gave me some tips on how to restore my hair (i’m transitioning) back to being healthy/​retain length. This guy is the REAL DEAL! I nearly fell asleep in his chair twice, but the most important thing: MY HAIR WAS LAID! Will be back next week!

Jamal purports himself as a hair expert, but he only does a mediocre job. I was unimpressed with his work. In short – it was basic!

First let me say, thank you Instagram because that’s how I came upon Jamal’s amazing work. As a Black woman that has been natural for almost 2 years, I’m very careful on who handles my hair. When I saw Jamal’s work via Instagram and then in person on a friend who has natural hair and he straightened it without a relaxer… that’s when I knew I could trust Jamal. My first visit, he gave me a hot and sexy short cut to compliment my features. I got nothing but compliments. So I decided to go back for a pop of color. OMG… I’m so happy with my new look.
Let me also say this. The salon is absolutely beautiful and everyone is so kind. Plus, it is in the heart of midtown. Also, this is not the type of salon that will keep you waiting and waiting well passed your appt time. When you make an appointment with Jamal, if it is at 10am, you’re in his chair at 10am.
Whether you have natural or relaxed hair, need a cut, or feeling adventurous for a new style Jamal is the one that will always give you the «red-​carpet» treatment.

My first visit to Jamal will definately not be my last. Here in DC, it is hard to find a stylist that doesn’t give you the side eye when you ask for a roller set on natural hair. In most cases, ive been told no and I refuse to get my scalp melted off by the Dominican stylists. Anyways, I was NYC this week and I needed my hair done as I am starting my new job next week. I came across Jamal on instagram a while back and I was impressed at how well he did a roller set on thick natural hair. I made an appointment with Tuesday. It was a rainy day but I didn’t let the rain stop me. I arrived at the salon I was immediately greeted by him and I thought to myself «goodness, he’s ever cuter in person.» The entire process was excellent from start to finish, not once did I have to sit and wait for someone to finish getting their hair done. I was taken to the wash bowl, and the shampoo was incredible. I got a deep condition and my hair felt so much better, no hassle or pain while detangling. The roller set process was different, but not a bad thing. I’ve never seen anyone do a roller set going around the perimeter of the head first (think of a halo). What I really loved is that he opted not to roller set, round brush, and then flat iron (which imo is too much heat), he decided to just lightly press my hair with 1 to 3 passes. The experience was great and Jamal is a great guy who seems very knowledgeable of his craft. I dont plan on letting anyone touch my hair from now on.

Jamal is a master! With my hair being natural, I booked an appointment with him based on the Unilocal reviews and the studio’s reputation. I was not disappointed!
I booked my appointment online and immediately received an email response from Jamal and a call from the salon to schedule my session. The receptionist had great energy and gave high praise to Jamal, which made me even more confident about my appointment. The ambience of the studio is wonderful (great music and vibe — even the clientele is chill) and since I live in the city, it was very convenient for me (I love BK, but didn’t want to trek there early morn). Jamal consulted me about my hair and gave me the best deep condition treatment that I never had. He massages the stress right out of my head! After a roller set, flat iron and trim, I couldn’t believe how light and airy my hair felt. And the style was perfect for my face!!! He worked a miracle! Thanks for hooking me up Jamal — I’ll be back in two weeks!

Jamal is awesome! He manages to keep my hair healthy and full and in great condition. He takes his time to get to know your particular hair type instead of just doing what everyone else does. I wouldn’t go anywhere else!

I am natural with «4a» type hair. I have been doing my own hair for over 9 years now. Jamal is the ONLY person I trust to touch my hair. He listens to my concerns and offers advice on how to better care for it. My style of choice is a wash & set with flat iron. Jamal is excellent with my hair. He gives amazing scalp massages! I reluctantly let him trim my hair and I am so happy I did! I still have my length and my hair looks amazing! I always get tons of compliments. Not only is he a great stylist, but he is also a very cool person. He’s a keeper! ;D

Jamal is an exceptional hairstylist. I have been going to him for so long I don’t remember how long it has been. He takes his time and is always neat and careful. If he isn’t there to do my touchup I won’t even go. Jamal is a perfectionist who obviously cares about his clients. I never worry when I am in his chair. One day, if he decides to open up his own salon, I will be first in line. Jamal is the best!!! Any salon owner would be lucky to have him.

I’ve been going to Jamal for about a year and a half and am always amazed at how amazing my hair is! I trusted him with chopping all of my hair off and he exceeded my expectations! I always get compliments on my style. Now I’m growing my hair out and it’s growing quicker than it ever has. He’s incredible with natural hair, short hairstyles and overall hair care!!!

He’s trained my hair well to the point that it tangles less, it’s able to withstand humidity and my sets last two weeks with no problems. They do not use hot combs but they use «care»!
