Joons Westside Fish Market

I have shopped at Joon’s a few times but, I am going to stop. The guy who is normally there is the one I am sure Hide S. is speaking of. I started shopping at this store years ago, when the owner was behind the counter and he had a better attitude. But, in recent years, I have not seen the owner. He has this rude man back there behind the counter. I remember when he was on the other side cutting up the fish but, I guess he was promoted.
This guy really does have an attitude problem. Yesterday, he short changed me and all I did was remind him the amount I paid and that he did not give me the correct change. No big deal. He shook his head as if I was the one being petty as he handed me my correct change!
The only reason why I go here is because they sell fish that I cannot readily find elsewhere but, believe me when I write that I will search much harder to find this fish elsewhere!
Also, I DO NOT believe the fish is as fresh as Citarela’s or Fairway. I used to shop at Joon’s early in the morning because I knew if I went there in the afternoon the fish eyes would turn cloudy by then. That is what happened, yesterday afternoon, around 5 pm. Not going back!

Went there to pick up a couple of things to make sushi — scallops, octopus, cured salmon etc.
Whenever i wanted to see the pieces, the person behind the fish counter rolled his eyes and wasn’t shy about doing it to show me he was annoyed.
Thought I’d support local places but honestly, the prices are pretty much the same as Whole Foods and shop keepers are much nicer.
Never going back to this place again.

Stopped in for the first time to buy lobster for a Christmas Eve dinner. They had a nice selection of live lobster. They also had a good selection of fish, scallops, etc. Customer service was very pleasant. I look forward to buying more seafood from them!

I think this is the only fish market in the area, and they really do a great job. I used to buy all of our seafood at Whole Foods but hands down, these guys offer a better product for a much better price. You should have no qualms about freshness or quality here, everything is tip top.

Joon is great. I had many questions about fish, as I have only started to eat it after a 27-​year hiatus, and he was very helpful and offered up suggestions after asking me how I was wanting to cook it. I also bought some of the largest scallops I have ever seen and those were AWESOME. His prices are good, considering his expertise as a fishmonger, and he is great with a knife.

I buy fish here all of the time. It’s not as cheap as going to Chinatown or Brooklyn (too lazy to take the subway just to buy fish), but definitely cheaper than what is available in the rest of the neighborhood (UWS).
They are very nice to me and prepare the fish exactly as I ask. Joon also saves fish bones/​carcasses for me so that I can make broth for my miso soup. He’s really nice about it.
I recommend Joon’s highly.

I had to come here because the seafood section at whole foods was disappointing to say the least. thank goodness for Joon! will come here first in the future.

I’ve been buying fish from Joon’s for a number of years… always fresh, good prices too. Then we went to a party this winter and the hosts had the food catered by Joon’s! Wonder Salmon, Rice and Beans, Roasted Veggies. Excellent.

Came here today to pick up some fresh fish to make sushi. Bought some tuna and salmon. I’m not a frequenter of fish markets in general, but they took off the skin and made sure that it was ready for sushi time.
They also have sushi here, fried calamari, crab, etc for sale.
Friendly staff, reasonable prices, and they know what they’re talking about.

Joon’s is a nice compromise between high end pricey seafood markets like Citarella (which has the best fish I’ve seen in the city) or Wild Edibles… and the fishy smelling hole in the wall down the block from you.
Joons is clean, has friendly service and fresh, inexpensive fish. Like many fishmarkets, they will fry some fish up for you if you’d like, but since I haven’t gone down that route I can’t vouch for the quality of their cooking.
I can say that the fish and scallops I’ve bought here to cook at home have been very satisfying and tasty.

The first time I saw Tilapia in D’Agostino after I moved here I nearly fell to the floor. $ 11.99 a pound for what I could get in Boston for $ 6. I know New York is expensive, but seriously, that seemed insane. Tilapia is cheap fish. All my local friends said I needed to go to a fish market, but I’m not going to lie, I was kind of intimidated. Anyway, walking by Joon’s one day I realized it’s not intimidating at all. The staff is friendly and they have a great selection… and yes… it’s cheaper than the «supermarket» or whatever you call them here. There were a few bones left in the flounder I bought last time, so I can’t quite give them five stars, but overall the place is pretty darn good.

Fresh, fair and knowledgeable. Lots of selection. When I was living on the west side I picked up fish there once a week. I just wish they had more locations.
