Kmart

Kmart always feels a bit disorganized and chaotic, and this one was no different. I was able to find one out of two items I needed, but they didn’t have much of a selection of kitchen appliances. I needed a hotplate because my stove broke, and I ended up having to go somewhere else. Kmarts in other cities I’ve lived in would have stocked these, but I guess the locations in NYC are smaller. Fair enough, it is what it is.
Another negative was that Unilocal’s map makes the front entrance look like it’s on Broadway, but it’s actually on 4^th Ave. near the corner of 8^th St. The entrance they’re talking about is an office building, I went inside and the security guard there told me the right way to go.
The service is what you’d expect from Kmart– they answered my questions and dutifully helped me find the other items I needed, but they don’t seem that thrilled to be there. Can’t really blame them for that, though.

I found the employees, including management, to be exceptionally rude and nastily Ugly in this store, and yet this is supposed to be Manhattan of all places! Are they trying to set a bad example for local celebrities that any form of ugly and nasty is a green light? Too many sections are tightly packed together where you’re forced into getting a little too close and personal with your fellow shoppers whom you haven’t been formally introduced to, whether they’re sweaty or have contagious warts, it doesn’t matter. You’re buying lingerie that’s been molested by anyone who sets foot in this place. This store just doesn’t care at all. Their clothing selection is among the trashiest, tackiest, low-​class, brightly colored ghetto crap I’ve seen in my life and… yet again, this type of crap survives in New York City? What is the world coming to? Honestly. Everything is inflated and the quality just doesn’t stand up to what you’re expected to pay.
I’m disgusted. I had to chug an entire bottle of Pepto-​Bismol after I left this place emtpy-​handed and disappointed.

I only put 1 star because I cannot put 0 or negative stars. I orderd stuff and returned them and they told me half of my purchase was returned, which it was not. This has taken 20 days, and I still did not get my refund. I was told twice to wait 3 – 5 days and I did and I am still waiting. I will not be ordering from Kmart or Sears again because they are both affiliated. Plus I think they are trying to make me wait 30 days so I can’t get my money back. They are criminals. I’ve gone to this Kmart for years, probably since it first opened. I’m surprised at the number of bad reviews this place has gotten.
It’s a good store to get basic things at decent prices. I usually buy my jeans and underwear here. The button-​down shirts aren’t the best, but they are decent. I usually don’t buy things from their basement, which has groceries and other household items, but it has a good selection, and the basement goes directly to the subway. I can easily imagine people stopping by on the way home, whether they work in the Village or live in the Village.
Yes, sometimes I’ve had to search around for help, but generally I’ve had no problems with the service. If the person didn’t know an answer to my question, they usually found someone who did. The cashiers have usually been efficient, and I never found a cashier who was rude.
If I could, I’d raise the review up a half-​star.

I recently purchased an item from this Kmart location and was disappointed with the wait time and service. The employees are incompetent and did not do things right the first time. A simple purchase transaction that should’ve taken no more than 5 minutes, ended up taking about 30 – 45 minutes. Both the cashier and manager did not know what they were doing and I had to explain to them multiple times what had happened and what steps should’ve been taken to resolve the issue I had with my purchase. It was a very frustrating experience as I was in a time-​crunch and had somewhere else to be.

Beware. Advertised prices on website are lower than the price you pay at the register. Merchandise not shelf tagged so you know before you checkout. Customer service staff rude and unable to explain why other than «that’s just the way it is.»

I always go here for bathing suits, but I am late obviously to the party, and there was nothing for me this trip. The store is very clean and organized though, I tend to always find a good deal or two, and am very happy with their selection. Only issue– the checking out. The employees are sooooo slooooow– they take their sweet time it seems purposefully. Its like a time warp from NY to Arkansas.

Much better than Walmart. Good staff. I go for household stuff and Haine’s underwear. Maybe the odd houseplant. Good garden stuff yo. But mainly it’s the staff I like.

I had some time to kill and why not come here to check out some make up. The store is pretty large for the area and overall it was organized.
They had a variety of items but not as much as other K-​Marts outside of Manhattan.
If you need something for the house around here then this is a good option.

I usually don’t have a problem with department stores, they provide us (the people) with household goods at dirt cheap prices. I never had a problem with the cashiers, especially this tall latino guy that works the cashier in the mornings in the front entrance. He always has a smile on his face and was very polite.
Until recently, I’ve been purchasing prepaid phone cards in the ELECTRONICS DEPARTMENT on the TOP FLOOR. There this one cashier that only works there and her name is ALLISON. The first time I went she gave me an attitude when I used a Kmart coupon printed on the Kmart website — she must of had a bad day, fine whatever.
Fast forward a month and I found myself in the same situation, again with ALLISON. She went and got her manager because she said that I’ve been doing this a lot apparently and wanted to know if the coupons were legit. NOTE TO ALLISON: CHECK YOUR OWN COMPANY’S WEBSITE, YOU GUYS OFFER NEW COUPONS EVERY WEEK. Then she gave me attitude AGAIN because she had trouble getting the coupon to work and that something was wrong with the scanner.
Listen, if you don’t want to work your dead-​end entry level position sales clerk job then PLEASE QUIT. I’m here giving your store BUSINESS so that your store MAY STAY OPEN and your here giving CUSTOMERS ATTITUDE? Maybe this job isn’t for you. I don’t know… do paperwork or filing, a job where you don’t have to interact with people because obviously you have 0 people skills.
Also, there was this security guard near the electronics department. I’m a proud Asian-​American but I sense that there was some racism involved here. He did nothing but STARE at me the entire time. Are you serious dude? Why would I even steal phone cards because they wouldn’t activate until they cashier has rung them up.
The second time, I wanted to bring the phone cards downstairs and pay downstairs but he told me that they needed to be paid upstairs (I was trying to avoid ALLISON). When Allison took about half an hour to get the register to work, she saw that I was holding up the line and told the other customers to pay downstairs but this time the security guard didn’t stop him. WTF? I THOUGHT YOU SAID ANYTHING FROM THE ELECTRONICS DEPARTMENT HAD TO BE PAID UPSTAIRS?
P. S.: This is one of the MOST GHETTO KMARTs I have ever been to my ENTIRE LIFE. F U KMART and your GHETTO ASS EMPLOYEES.

Sometimes you need KMart, am I right? I’m not saying KMart sells nice things, but as far as KMarts go, this one is not half bad. They have a wide selection of merchandise, including pajamas. They are great for seasonal items such as Easter Candy or Christmas decorations. Downstairs, they also have a husbandry section. If I had a terrace, I would purchase tomato seeds and grown tomatoes. But I don’t have a terrace and frankly, I don’t even like tomatoes.
I am being totally serious when I say, this Kmart has a great selection of dusters and gifts for your grandma. If you don’t know what a duster is, classy you. But some grandmas fancy them.
I wish this location had more of an emphasis on customer service with a little more haste on the lines, so allot time to shop. It opens at 8am and there tends not to be egregious lines at that time.
If you are taking the uptown 6 from to or from location, you can enter or leave from downstairs and never have to go outside.

The store is big, has lots of merch, and is not that crowded — those are not good reasons for 3 stars. That’s called a business model.
Not a business model is Chinwenwa. A cashier of dubious integrity accompanied by a snappish grabbiness. After I paid close to $ 100, I asked for the coupons generated by the sale (and saw that one was a $ 5 off coupon) and she REFUSED to give them to me because, in her words, «you are not a member» (whaaaa? Is this Equinox?!). I called the store later to inquire about this practice and was told that (get this) giving coupons to customers was at the discretion of the cashier.
Sure.
And I can sell you the tokens
that people have to pay

on sunny days.

I’m reviewing because Jessica on the second floor as amazing. She could train people that work in customer service on how to smile and engage customers in a positive manner. I was struggling to pull up my coupons and she totally understood the lack of reception in the building and was really kind.
The selection is good and the store is huge. I could spend hours looking for deals. But most of the floor staff and cashiers seem to be annoyed by the presence of customers. Management should focus as much on customer engagement as they do on keeping shelves full.

So I never use to go to K-​Mart before moving to NYC. All of the locations I knew of in my home time saw little to store traffic. I always pondered how they managed to even stay open. Well this isn’t that K-​Mart.
This K-​mart always has what you need (me anyway) no matter what it might be. Apparently others are aware of that too. A reasonable amount of customers shop at the store on a daily basis even though prices are a little higher than a store of its size. It’s definitely probably due to its high rents considering its location though.
The street level has women’s clothing, jewelry, and other things I’ve always failed to take notice of. With exception of the cash registers, this really isn’t my floor.
The top floor has electronics, men’s clothing, appliances, pillow and comforter type stuff, baby products, shoes, kitchen supplies and so on.
The third: food, pharmacy, health and beauty, sporting goods, automotive, home cleaning, and simple repair type things.
Store is typically clean and has great deals when the store is trying to clear something out. Unfortunately I’m not there randomly picking up stuff.

Always liked the entrance from the subway.
Not known for the best customer service but it will usually have what you’re looking for. Alas, some items like the food products are a little overpriced from the supermarkets.
About 3 floors (I think). I usually stop here for bedding or small housewares.
It’s the only place I’ve found that has the Kmart red colour in bedding & housewares that I want as opposed to the wine, burgundy or plum reds (yuck). Why don’t more shops carry the primary colours anyway?
It’s a convenient shop in my opinion.

It’s terribly convenient and one of the few big box stores that isn’t jam-​packed with hordes of people.
Unfortunately, it might as well be, since the speed of service is about the same. This Kmart employs some of the most apathetic people in existence. No amount of asking, pleading, bribing, threatening or yelling can get these employees to do anything more than a half-​assed job. If you spend more than a few minutes in the store, you’re bound to witness a customer using one or more of these tactics. The definition of futility, folks.
But they sell a little of everything, it seems. And that is very hard to beat, especially in NYC. Where else can I buy luggage, a cast iron pan, an aloe plant, and honey barbecue Fritos all in the same place? It’s a place I dislike going to, but yet, I still go.

Its a relic and a mystery. How has Kmart, retail’s longest running joke, still managed to hang onto such prime NYC real estate for so long (since 1996 apparently)? And having grown up in the blue twilight of Kmart’s decline, there was a time (junior high) when getting spotted in a Kmart was equivalent to an act of social seppuku. BUT. then again, junior high is a pretty stupid time in general. And, all-​growed up now and having to fend for myself, I’ll give my money to whoever will sell me my Scotts toilet paper the cheapest.
So, I’ve come to appreciate the Kmart here at AP as the prices seem mostly lower and I seem to find most anything I’ll need of household, office, health&beauty needs here as well as a sizeable array of food items including juice and dairy. Finally, the lower level checkout lines are conveniently located adjacent to direct subway access though it is only to the downtown #6.

Come for:
— the plants
— the snacks
— the «fine» jewelry
–the subway level entrance/​exit
This place could be better, but it has a little bit of everything and it’s in a convenient place. For college students it’s great for almost everything and I still have the drill I bought over a decade ago from here.
Things that could improve are to make the cash registers in the basement open later. It’s a pain in the butt to shop for everything you need just to find out you have to lug your stuff upstairs to check out only to go back downstairs to take the subway.
Sometimes it’s really slow at the registers, but it’s never too crazy. I mean, you can get almost everything here. That’s why I’m giving it three stars.

This place has everything you need. The only caveat is that you’ll have to find it yourself because the service here is terrible.
I like coming here to buy all my household goods because it’s so much cheaper than cvs/​Duane reade/​walgreens.
Waiting in line for the cashier is painfully slow but you can just pick up a magazine to read while you wait.
This is a good place to get all your necessities if you’re not in a rush and can handle finding all of your items on your own.
