Kmart

I’ve been to this Kmart a few times. It’s a Kmart. It feels a bit old and outdated but it has your basics. I prefer Target to Kmart but if you’re in the area and you need some stuff, Kmart will do in a pinch. The lines always seem long though no matter when you go, which is weird.
If you go to the lower level it actually connects to the subway station below, and you can also access the LIRR pretty easily as well. It’s nice to stop by if you have some time to kill while waiting for your LIRR train!

I ordered something online to be picked up in the store. I went to the cashier for my items, I was told to wait for my items. It’s been 10 minutes for my stuff. Most places when you order online, its waiting for you behind the counter. Not here. Slow and disorganized. Would be quicker to get the items yourself. This is why I don’t shop at Kmart.

It’s K-​Mart. What can you say? Long wait lines at the check-​out counter, but a convenient location in Penn Station.

Never had a problem here just stuff sold out. Due to the location I anticipate the long lines. They are courteous and helpful and always use my Kmart rewards. Can’t beat the prices and my daughter loves the toy section. Usually neat and organized when I go look for things. Less staff on the floor than there typically is for the holidays but I know what I need and where to find it. I gave it 3 stars cause the escalator is always broken.

It is a solidly average Kmart, but I am bumping up my rating slightly for its location. It is right by Penn Station and my lady boo’s new apartment. They basically have anything you could want for your daily life. Their prices (and quality) probably are not competitive with what is available online (Amazon
etc) but it is what it is. The store has 3 or 4 floors, which gets annoying when you have a full cart and there are no functioning escalators. They offered me the chance to join their rewards program; they tell you it takes 5 minutes but it is really more like 10.

Poor service. They have 20 registers but only ⁷⁄₈ open and the line is wrapped around the store. When picking up my order, I waited in the long ass line to be told I had to go to the bottom floor to electronics. Id rather go somewhere else and pay shipping then deal with these guys

I find this store pretty conveniently located in mid town. They are open late till 11 when most stores have closed. If you need a last minute outfit or gift you can always come here. It’s on 3 different levels, very large store and well stocked. First level in pen station is grocery, cards, toys, electronics, beauty. 2^nd level is men’s, home furnishings, storage, appliances, kids apparel. 3^rd level is women’s apparel, shoes, handbags, jewelry. They have the lowest price on fancy feast cat food in Manhattan, which is why I shop here often. The cashiers could be more polite. I find it rude when I’m not able to read what my total amount is and not told, just told «swipe». They do have rats here.

I was here Friday waiting nearly 20 mins for an item I paid for online. Could no longer wait, told them I will be back Monday, which is today. I go to electronics to again attempt to pick up my item. I have been here for over 20 minutes. The cashier kept constantly paving the «gofer» department and nobody was picking up. She had to ask other people is other people were around. No one was around. You mean to tell me that there is a time of the day where «store pickup» services are unavailable because I am just confused at what I just experienced.

I once saw a HUGE cat-​sized RAT crawling around the floor of the appliance section. Despite that, I still come here since I’m lazy (I live one subway stop away) and I’m a cheapskate.

Very convenient being in Penn Station, but store is poorly maintained.
The escalators are constantly out of order, and the one from the concourse level going up, you can count on your fingers the times it has worked recently, contacted customer service, they couldn’t care less. One of the managers we have reported the problem.
Elevators can be slow, and the bottom line is the escalators should be properly maintained.

This location is a lot bigger than then cooper location so you’ll almost always find what you want but the size of this store is so huge that it sometimes gets overwhelming and causes me to dread coming here.
If you’re looking for something, you’ll definitely find a staff member in one of the aisles within 20 – 30 feet.

Found myself running into this place after getting off of the train plenty of times and have been saved so many times when needing last minute items! I have also sought comfort here when meeting friends and I was embarrassingly earlier than they were and needed to look busy. This K-​Mart literally has everything. I spent over an hour here on Friday night waiting for a friend and was astounded by the size. I guess only having run in and out of the front of the store when needing something quickly, I never realized how large the store is and how much it carries. Pretty crazy that it is right in Penn Station! Large selection of everything from books, to home décor, to food, to make-​up, to pet supplies, etc. Not a good selection of clothes I noticed. I’ve never done a full out shopping here, so I can’t speak on that subject, but it always happens to have exactly what I need, when I need it. The staff is not all that helpful and seem annoyed to have to be doing their job at times. I like that you can easily spend time in here, or run in and out if need be.

Junky story, surly staff. Avoid if you can — suck it up and make the trek to one of NY’s Target stores instead.

Talk about holiday shoppers last minute stop. The store typically has a steady flow of customers because of its location. But today (¹²⁄₂₃) people are trying to snatch up those last minute gifts before they get on the train to their holiday retreat.
Now how do I know all of this?! Guilty! I am doing last minute shopping as well. But it was too much for me to even think of getting a gift that was worthy enough of those lines. I swear I probably would of have to had found gold on sale for three dollars lol
I have never seen it so busy. The lines were out of control. I think the staff did a good job of keeping the flow of traffic moving but it was overwhelming.
They did have good selections and plenty of displays with those quick last minute gifts. But beware holiday shoppers those lines looked like at least a thirty minute wait.

It started out like any old day: I walked into k-​mart, intending to buy a cheap watch. What transpired was a comedy of errors of such absurd proportions as to inspire my first ever (!) Unilocal review. Here goes:
After I picked out my cheap watch (there was a delightful selection– as to be expected from a k-​mart level institution), I tried to check out at the jewelry section cash register. But after an extended time period tinkering, the lady informed me that the cash register wasn’t working– so I went to wait in the [long-​ass] line in front.
After that, the «absurd proportions» thing really started pick up. When I reached the front of the line, the lady in front who directs you to an open register directed me to the wrong cash register, so I stood there and waited awkwardly while the lady there was still checking out a customer. Then the lady at that register proceeded to take days to find a tool to unlock the zip-​tie thing that prevents you from stealing the watch, so I stood there and waited for days while she looked for the tool. Oh, and finally, the watch rang up for five dollars more than it said on the price tag; I asked the lady about this, and she told me I had to go all the way back to the watch section and talk to the lady there, and then go wait in the [long-​ass] customer service line to get that fixed. At which point I was like «I can’t even» and left.
For the record, I think there was some intent to provide some sort of customer service. For instance, while I was waiting for days at the cash register, another cashier was like «are you waiting to be helped?», which was a customer service-​y thing to do. I didn’t experience rudeness or attitude; everyone was nice, if incompetent– the problem was mainly in execution.
And with that, I’ll probably still return to this k-​mart, again and again. Why? The same reason I gave this k-​mart 2 stars in the first place: 1) cheap 2) conveniently located. Such is the tyranny of corporate capitalism.

After a few more months of shopping here, I can officially demote these folks to one star.
Every now and again I’ll come across one employee who is extremely helpful and extremely courteous. But the overall culture of this store seems to be one of sloppiness, laziness, and attitude.
Walking through the plants department, just about all the plants and bags of potting soil are infested with tiny flies. Lines are always ridiculously long and employees move at a snail’s pace, a curious work ethic for a store in a busy train station. Registers break constantly. One time I was trying to redeem my «Shop Your Way» rewards, and not only did the young woman at the register have no idea how to do it, she tried to cover her incompetence with attitude. And speaking of attitude, «customer service» managers reek of it.
I had the chance to drive upstate, where Kmart stores are clean and employees greet you with a smile. This so called «flagship» store could learn a lot from them. Until then, I’ll plan on shopping here only when I have to, not because I want to.

I walk in and Easy Like a Sunday Morning is playing. i should have recognized the foreshadowing and gotten the hell out, but I needed a cheap flexible scrubbing brush, and for shits & giggles (likely more the former than the latter) a can of sausage gravy for biscuits. I run in and snag both, running an obstacle course around the slow moving zombie customers to find my goods. I grab them and rush to the maze of a line… only to WAAAAAAAAAAAAAIT. Duane Reade has a specialty in being slow but this K Mart has them seriously beat. Cashiers casually scan items and chat people up while the line grows like the national debt. Hello, this is Penn Station — we have trains to catch and shit to do, hurry the f**k up already!
ugh, I wish Target would take this shit show of a store over.

It’s K-​Mart. It is what it is.
You get better deals for non-​existent service.
Check-​out is a little slow (you aren’t at Trader Joe’s) and staff won’t go out of your way to help you (if you see any at all), but I mean… where else are you going to get such cheap household items? You should expect to spend at least 50% more time (compared to Duane Reade, CVS, etc) trying to navigate the terrible layout. A paltry price to pay in exchange for better deals, in my opinion.

Stopped in here when I was in Midtown to grab some socks since the rain had gotten my socks soaked. I like this Kmart much better than the one on 14^th for some reason.

My general Kmart history:
I was a huge fan when Kmart replaced Bloomingdale’s in Fresh Meadows a couple of decades ago, then became disillusioned when it became de facto policy that the line would be delayed 10 minutes if someone wrote a check. Then went I ventured out into the Red States and found Walmart it was tougher to enjoy Kmart. In my recent JC years Target became my mass retailer of choice (o.k., it’s more about walking distance than choice.)
Kmart isn’t the best of the big boxes, but it looks better when you peruse the price tags of CVS, Duane Reade, Rite Aid and Walgreen’s. My last two trips to this Kmart were inspired by bad weather that made clever subway itineraries much more palatable than a walk to Target. While my first visit was marred by a product shortage or two, the store was in better shape the second time. I picked up items like soap and Fuze iced tea without getting that «ripped off by Duane Reade» feeling. Also, the checkout line was pleasantly brisk.
