I order a cake for my mothers 50^th birthday. First off I took photos of different cakes I wanted my mothers cake too look like. Every time I showed a photo they keep saying they couldn’t make it. Finally discourage I ask for a similar cake I saw done already. When we got the cake it look pretty good until I say it on the table and notice the cake was going sideways it wasn’t even. In addition there was so much icing on the cake I was starting to wonder how much was really cake, not to much how sweet it was. Honestly, I would not recommend coming here your better off spending your money somewhere else.

I tried ordering my birthday cake here. My first phone call in the early afternoon should’ve told me that this was a dead end. No one picked up. I called a second time in the late morning the following week, again the phone just kept ringing.
I was determined to give them a chance and decided to take trip here after work. What a mistake. I got there a little after 5pm on a weekday and it was closed… metal fence down with a big sign displaying their phone number! Damn, I was pissed. I guess they don’t care about getting business… cause I’m letting everyone know that they get an F for customer service. Don’t bother wasting your time with this place!
Go get your birthday cake at El Pandero in St. Nicholas where the cakes are delicious and service is A+ compared to this poor excuse of a ‘bakery’.

The Best ‘Dominican’ cake I’ve ever tasted, and I’ve had MANY since I was a kid.

I have been a customer of Maritza’s cakes for years. She has made my birthday cakes, my daughter’s shower and all birthday cakes. You can get the best Dominican cake here ever !! They taste amazing to perfection. Not too sweet, perfect ! I am a cake junkie, and I definitely recommend this place! It is very busy on the weekends, in that case you MUST make your order in advance.

Very satisfied on my order, very good pricing, i believe i ordered 6lbs and we had the whole top portion left so def was enough. Wish they have an IG page so i can give them popularity and pass on their greatness. Def will be coming here back again to order for any occation.

I’m giving this place a 5 star because it one of the BEST cakes I have tried. I’m not of fan of sweet stuff but this is by far on my top 3 list of the best Dominican cake you will find in Washington Heights. My cons about this place is that is very tiny for the amount of people that come in and out of this place, they ask you for a time to pick up your cake and once you let them know they say no we don’t start until X time. (why ask me then). They have gotten pricey throughout the years I’ve been dealing with them, you must be very detailed when asking for specific cake at your liking. Other wise I would recommend this place.

This is the ultimate best Dominican Cake ever. I been buying cakes from this bakery for yrs now. I actually order my wedding cake from here even though I live in Pennsylvania because no one compares to their cake.

Not Happy at all. I ordered a cake for my daughter’s 7^th bday and the way the cake was given to me was horrible i was holding the cake and as the car moved the cake did too. buy the time i got to the party which was 15 blocks away the cake had shifted. I called them and ask why would the cake move like that if its fresh. I ask if the cake was in fridge the girl said no. I said but there is tres leche on the bottom of the cake, she said it was cooked milk dosent need to be in fridge, so i reminded her its 90degree weather you left my 180.00 cake out. so unhappy will never order frim here again. plus the girl was very nasty over the phone i ask for her manager she always said never there to call back later. The tres leche i had to try before giving to guests and as expected it was sour no good the top had chocolate filling thank god it was way better than the bottom. If you need a good dominican cake go to Valencia cakes is way better quality! Dont know why i went to maritza cakes oh well u learn n move on.

Terrible service and they got my order completely wrong and overcharged me. Do not come here if you want a fondant cake.

I’ve been a customer of theirs for the last 15 years. They were baking in an apt converted into a «bakery» when I started buying from them. Have you ever seen industrial ovens in an apartment?! I have. Their cakes are the very best Dominican cakes around. Can’t find anyone in comparison. They are the perfect balance of moist/​dry, perfect merengue icing. Homemade decorations. They even branched out to more modern decorated cakes. My mouth waters just thinking about them. Yes, I drive all the way there and will continue to do so until they close. I’m happy they’ve moved on up to a store front (this took place years ago). Bad part, is their as busy as ever. Call early for your cake unless you want to pick it up late. You can place your order over the phone and leave a deposit on a credit card. You order by pound and they prefer a Spanish speaking person to talk to (depends on who picks up).

1. Hands down best dominican cake. Get the crema filling, it’s to die for.
2. They don’t take any new orders on Saturdays, just pick-​ups and they have limited hours as well.

4. Don’t think they sell candles.

So I ordered a cake from here because I tried it when a friend purchased it with the guava filing. I decided to go with the Tres Leche filing. I must admit it’s pretty good but they make the Tres Leche filing different from what I’m used to. All in all my family enjoyed it. Thank you.

After a 3^rd time having cake from Martiza’s, it was time to finally do a review. I’ve only tried one flavor from this place, which is the strawberry, pineapple and guava cake. As awkward as it sounds, it’s actually rather good! Don’t knock it till you try it! The frosting is really light and fluffy — tastes like marshmallow frosting. It’s not too sweet! Just right. It tastes even better with a cold glass of milk.
Martiza’s cakes tastes EXACTLY how it looks, homemade. Don’t expect any fondant fancy cakes. Rather, expect cakes-​your-​next-​door-​dominican-​grandma-​made. From the history of this place, Maritza initially started making cakes straight from her apartment and finally transitioned to opening her own location (enter applause here). Don’t mistake this place as a bakery with pre-​made cakes, pastries, cookies and such. Scratch that out of your head right now! Again, they do not have pre-​made cakes to walk in and purchase (bummer!). You have to call or walk-​in to pre-​order your cakes in advance for pick up since they do not offer delivery.

They still have the same customer service issues. Because the cake is so good, some of my friends/​family want cakes from here on their special occasion so I deal with it. For Dominican cakes, I haven’t really looked into any alternatives yet anyway.
Cakes are rarely done on time and there is no type of acknowledgement or remorse from anyone working there about it. It just adds to the frustration when someone seems absent minded and not apologetic about the situation. A few minutes I can understand but an hour or even two? Que pasoooo!!! I make sure I call before I even bother going to get it.
I still do not understand their pricing in terms of what colors/​design you want on your cake. There’s always an added fee almost every time I order anything. The last time I was charged 15 dollars extra for a basic color like red, the same has happened with blue/​green, and their explanation never makes sense. In my case, I always have my own cake toppers so its not like they are doing much.
Despite how late they are with your cake, they stop to take pictures of it before handing it you. Ayyy que lindo.

I ordered my son’s 25^th b’day cake from Maritza’s based on the reviews I read on Unilocal and I was disappointed. My son, who does not like desserts of any kind, likes Dominican cake. Since the woman who baked his cakes for the past 20 yrs has moved back to the DR, I’ve had trouble replacing her delish cakes. I thought this would be it. The cake wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great. It was a little on the dry side. The pineapple could barely be tasted because there was too little of it. The meringue frosting was good. The decoration was good, although the sugar flower was hard as a brick. To make matters worse, they were the most unfriendly people I have ever met in a bakery. When I walked into the small place, I almost walked out. No one welcomed me, no one said a word, although 2 of them looked up at me. No one said, «un momento» or anything. I had to speak up first. WTH? When I picked up the cake, same thing. I won’t go here again. The price was the same as everywhere else $ 35/​lb.

Absolutely delicious. Cake was moist and very tasty it did not have that really sweet pasty taste to it excellent Dominican cake and I’m not really a fan of Dominican cake but this one was Amazing. I ordered a cake of about 6−7lbs for a baby shower I told them how I wanted it and that’s exactly what I got. I ordered my cake 3 weeks before the date and ordered it for a specific time I got to the shop and was extremely crowded in there I wanted my cake by 3pm and got it at 5pm and the only answer I got was «esperate» which means hold on but in a really nasty attitude and also said that because of my cake everyone else’s was late. I got really upset and told her my cake should of been ready if they are not done that’s not my problem my cake was probably ordered before anyone in this place right now and I didn’t care if my cake was holding up everyone my cake was paid for and ordered 3 weeks in advance. Overall experience yummy cake good price but one nasty woman I will go here again and order a cake.

This cake was so delicious! My fiancé & I ordered one of Maritza’s cake for my fiancé’s grandma’s Birthday. It had strawberries & tres leches on the other. Made grandma very happy! Thank you Maritza. Hopefully we will see you very soon!!!

This «hole in a wall» place has amazing Dominican cakes (bizcocho).
Dominican cakes are very ‘airy’ and somewhat moist. It’s not saggy/​wet or too dry and it will dissolve in your mouth. Visually it looks like a wedding cake with white «suspiro» or what you will recognize as frosting — very fancy and somewhat tacky looking. The frosting (suspiro) is a very special kind of frosting made out of egg whites and definitely not something you will find in the supermarket isles.
A half pound cake with your choice of dulce de leche, milk cream, guava or pineapple filling will cost about $ 25.
Dominican cakes tend to be too sweet sometimes but Maritza’s cake are just perfect. In our tradition it’s mandatory in almost any type of celebration: birthday, weddings, graduation, you name it. I’m definitely not mad about that :-D
