Excellent Sushi!!! Yellowtail jalapeño was awesome, super white and bluefin nigiri were terrific, gyoza and black miso cod were also very memorable. We will be back next time in NYC

Great food and prices and always packed — mostly people from neighborhood so it’s obviously good because people return and always happy

Wow! This is some of the best sushi I’ve had in awhile. I am visiting NYC and will always remember this restaurant. The Lobster spring roll + Crunchy Salmon Roll + Philly Roll were amazing !! Even the miso soup. Also very nice ambiance!

Fantastic sushi! Great ambience. My friend and I came in around 8:00 pm on a Sat night and were seated after only a 15 min wait. Not bad at all! Will definitely be back the next time i am in NYC!

Fish was fresh, but the rolls were on the skimpy side though forgivable. It’s a tad on the pricey side and I wouldn’t recommend frequenting often(unless you can afford to!), however it’s a nice little treat when you’re here for a celebratory meal. Kitchen was slow but they rectified the wait with a bowl of seaweed salad on the house. Staff is friendly and they really make the place pop with their warm attitude. If you were to choose one roll and one roll only that you should 100% order, get the crispy rice roll. It is that good and it is definitely worth the wait.

Momoya deserves a Michelin star, it’s way better than Morimoto and the price is way more reasonable. i got the omakase plus the crispy rice rolls, and it was worth every penny. for anyone’s first time here, get the omakase — the fish is fresh and in my opinion were pretty big pieces. we also got eel with rice and that was really good. such generous portions of eel, really can’t go wrong.

This was AMAZINGSUSHI! You will not be disappointed. We arrived at 5:30 on a Friday and the place started to quickly fill up. The service was nice and our server was always around if we needed anything. The place is pricey but well worth it!

Honestly the service it’s getting worse and worse. They’ve always been so busy and in certain hours it gets so crowded but lately it’s like they don’t care anymore about giving a nice service. I did not enjoy the service but I did enjoy the food, which was amazing as always. We went for lunch and had the 3 rolls combo and of course the«tuna pizza» and the crispy tuna roll. Highly recommend these two. It’s not cheap but this combination wasn’t bad for two people.

Great spot for a girls night! . Came in with a group of 3 on the early side, 6pm on a Wednesday. We didn’t have to wait to be seated, but they don’t seat until your entire party is there! Apparently it gets very crowded, so be prepared to wait if you come later. I hear they give complimentary wine to those waiting which is excellent. We ordered a variety of rolls, and not one of them disappointed. To start, we had edamame dumplings & the yellowtail jalapeño cold starter. We split 4 rolls, and my favorite had to be the crispy rice. I have never had a another roll like it and the spicy tuna on the top was delicious. The rice was hot, crunchy and perfectly cooked. Highly recommended. Momoya, I’ll be back!

The ambiance in this place is quintessential New York: shi-shi, loud, cramped… the sushi is pretty run of the mill as are all of the hot dishes– good, but nothing to get excited over.

I had never been here when I lived in New York City and now I regret it. This is as good as it gets. I went there on a Saturday night for dinner, around 7:00 — 8:00 and it was packed. They don’t take reservations, but the wait wasn’t bad, maybe about 15 minutes. Service was excellent and the space itself is dimly lit and trendy. The sake was tasty and the sushi, my God, the sushi,. SO good. SO fresh. We split a bunch of things — yellowtail scallion, sweet potato, dragon, and assorted nigiri. The Toro was delicious — melted in my mouth. I will definitely be back.

It seems that I always visit the Chelsea location for lunch and dinner at the Upper West Side. Their is simple, always good, nothing fancy but fresh and tasty. I like some creative rolls they offer; good flavor combos(would give 4 stars for food). Chelsea location serves fast for lunch(and is very crowded); service is not the most attentive(therefore the 3 stars). It’s a safe neighborhood choice.

Sushi is one of my favourite meals but can be quite predictable so my best friend recommended this popular place as it offers contemporary sushi with a twist! We got here just before the evening rush at 6:30pm. The menu offered a lot of exciting things and I wanted to try it all! We chose a Momoya special of ravioli made with squid wrapped around fresh sea urchin and dressed with chive oil and salmon roe — this was amazing! We also went for a popular mushroom soup, which if you like mushrooms you’ll love this; another special of crispy rice topped with spicy tuna, shiitake mushrooms and jalapeño, which worked really well; a staple seaweed salad and a rainbow roll, which were both delicious. We were nicely full after this but went for dessert anyway and the matcha pancake layer cake was light and not too sweet. If you live sushi but want something a bit different, I would highly recommend Momoya. I think they don’t take bookings so get here early or be prepared to wait — but not for long because the service is really efficient!

Still a great restaurant! The hubby and I decided to venture down to Chelsea to do some furniture shopping. At lunchtime we found ourselves in front of the famed Cafeteria but couldn’t bring ourselves to go in. I said, «You know, Momoya is about 3 blocks away, maybe they are open for lunch.» The hubby gave me his big, winning smile… I opened my trusty Unilocal app and saw that Momoya was in fact, open for such. YEAH!!! When we got to the restaurant it was empty, by the time we left, it was packed! We had: Sashimi Lunch Special — the fish was terrific and fresh Sushi Lunch Special — delicious, their style of sushi is similar to Gari, jalapeño or fish roe on top Spicy Tuna Roll — delicious Philadelphia Roll — Not my thing, but the hubby loved Our lunches came with soup or a salad, we opted for the salad and it was really good! Green Tea Millecrepe — very tasty It is great to see that Momoya is still the best sushi restaurant in Upper Chelsea!

The service was awesome! The sashimi platter chef’s choice was fresh and delicious! I loved the selection chosen including the perfectly fried items too. Wish they had a couple more roll options that didn’t include fruit of some kind. But over all a solid fresh sushi spot!

Arrived as a party of 2 on a early Saturday evening around 5:35…10 mins into opening and hungry sushi lovers started to fill up the trendy spot. By 6, the place was packed and lines were out the door. Woah! After my meal I could see why. For appetizers, we started with sea urchin crostini and mushroom soup. Please do yourself the favor and get the sea urchin shiso crostini, as it is toasted to perfection with sweet and creamy uni and finished off with ikura and yuzu. Perfect combination of sweet creamy uni and sour yuzu exploding in your mouth. Absolutely delish! Also do yourself the favor and skip out on the mushroom soup, very bland — mushrooms weren’t very tenderly cooked. The broth perhaps resembled hot water + soy sauce mixed in. I went with the chef’s sushi tasting + choice of signature roll — crispy tuna rice roll. Presentation was lovely and impressive. The most memorable pieces were the fatty tuna, salmon, sweet ebi and of course the sweet & creamy uni. The sushi chef does a superb job in pairing each piece of fish with unique toppings to enhance the flavor of each piece. I love the time and effort spent. My boyfriend is boring and ordered the spicy scallop($ 12), sweet potato tempura roll($ 6) & the eel cucumber roll($ 10). Which was obviously not worth the price. Service was also very attentive, friendly and awesome. Would love to visit the UES location as well.

3.5 stars. As many other Unilocalers have said, this place is hip and trendy; it’s definitely not your typical Japanese restaurant. Given its location and no reservation policy, I recommend coming before 7 pm. Otherwise be prepared to wait as there was a huge crowd when my boyfriend and I were leaving at around 7:30 pm. Also, the tables are packed so closely together that if you have a corner table, it’s basically impossible to get out to use the restroom. Not to mention, you can hear every conversation from the people around you, so prepare to get to know a little about your neighbors’ lives. The boyfriend and I both ordered the sushi tasting, which is 10 pieces of sushi(chef’s choice) and a special roll; we chose the Crispy Rice and Black Dynamite as these are the fan favorites. The sushi was good, but the rice kept falling apart. Also, I wish the pieces were more diversified. For instance, 5 out of the 10 pieces we had practically looked and tasted the same; where’s the tuna? The special rolls are where Momoya shines. The Cripsy Rice is to die for! However, if you order it al a carte, it’ll cost your wallet $ 15.50 for 6 pieces. Call me cheap, but despite how great this is, I can’t justify paying this much for a roll. Service is lacking here as well. I felt like our waiter kept trying to up sell us appetizers as we waited for our sushi. The sushi is good and totally photographable, but for its hefty price tag and cramped seating, I’m not sure if I’ll be back. Tip: if you want a specific sushi in your sushi tasting, request it otherwise you most likely won’t see it on your platter(i.e. I’m pretty sure I only got uni because I asked for it).

I’ve always been a big fan of Momoya. I’ve been a few times and obviously I originally went for the crispy rice. The crispy rice happens to be excellent. The rolls they have are really innovative and different. Black Dynamite is usually what I order along with my crispy rice. Normally I always eat in the restaurant, but tonight I decided to take out. Of course take out isn’t always as good as eating in the restaurant, but I ordered crispy rice and a spicy tuna roll. I was definitely given something else instead. Not quite sure what it was, but I can say for sure that it wasn’t tuna. I absolutely HATE anything but tuna and I’m extremely disappointed. I could tell the difference as soon as I tasted it and the worst is when you take out and you’re already home eating and it isn’t what you ordered/wanted. The restaurant itself is really trendy and has a great ambiance. I don’t believe they take reservations so there’s normally a little bit of a wait. I would definitely go back to the restaurant, but I’m really disappointed with my take out experience tonight. Momoya is a little bit on the pricier side and when I order something… I expect it to be what I wanted.

I see why it’s popular! Momoya has very efficient and attentive staff. Their sushi chefs work very hard to make beautiful dishes quickly. I thoroughly enjoyed the rolls I had here. We decided that for a small group it would be a good idea to get a few rolls and share. Definitely get a roll with crispy rice. I was told that the menu selection has changed so it’s probably a good idea to go regularly so as not to miss your favorites.

We wanted a no stress celebratory dinner. so we ordered takeout — party platter for two please! :D Got the«Chelsea Platter» choice of 4 signature rolls and 12 classic rolls The fish was fresh and good amount in every piece of sushi. Also nice big cuts of avocado. The presentation of the 16 rolls was fancy, looked expensive and pretty. My favorite roll was the salmon crunch! The crunch was not the usual flakes, they were like tiny round savory crunchies. Never had them before and super tasty
