Mood Fabrics

This place was massive. I initially walked past it, so be aware that it’s easy to miss if you don’t see Mood Home. Next time, I will definitely go with a list of wants just to avoid feeling overwhelmed. But will definitely be back soon!

I dealt with Lena and she was amazing she was quick responsive and they had exactly what I needed which was over 50 yards of cheesecloth! She dealt with my needs immediately was very responsive and the transaction was smooth and successful! I will use these guys over and over amazing

Enjoyed our day exploring a variety of fabric stores in the fashion district. Mood Fabrics was our last and we enjoyed exploring the variety of fabrics and trims essentially in one location. Service was friendly and knowledgeable — when we explained our project and colour ideas, we were expertly directed to suitable options. Certainly the busiest store we visited and the one that had the most options.

I walked in looking for some high-​end designer fabrics. They have some okay fabrics, but for their prices, only people that have money to throw away or don’t know the prices of what they are purchasing, can shop here. They made me leave my bag near a far-​away table that nobody was monitoring. They probably rob you that way too. I ended up finding much better designs and quality fabrics from a bunch of better shops around the garment district. You literally just have to walk a few more blocks and you will save hundreds of dollars instantly. The customer service isn’t amazing either, like you would expect for what you are paying. They were also giving a group of students a hard time on the second floor. Go somewhere else!

Selection: borders on great but a very disorganized store and a really really messy one. Dirty even.
Customer Service: while staff are clearly sewing «know it alls» they are not helpful in the least. Some actually border on condescending. Most can’t be bothered. You know they hear you when you say «excuse me», yet they keep on walking.
I went shopping yesterday for items for my first sewing project. I needed material, interfacing and everything from scissors to straight pins. Hey — it’s my first project.
I was REALLY looking forward to going and picking out all my items for my new hobby.
On a scale of 1 to 10 — I give them maybe a 2.
Here is one example of customer service. I see 2 sizes in zippers and not the size I need. An employee standing there doing absolutely nothing tells me they don’t have 16″ zippers. He almost growls at me! Not kidding! LOL! I question this and he tells me to buy a 24″ zipper and «cut it down». When I showed my sewing teacher the zipper and told her what he said, she looked at me like I had 8 heads. You can’t cut this zipper down.
Honestly, I could go on and on and on and on. But I won’t. From now on, given ample notice, I’ll go to
. You can’t really get attitude (or get growled at!) on the internet. I guess their name fits them cuz staff is really Mood-​y!

Disappointing experience. Shop attendants are not helpful and even rude. I was expecting a super professional and great customer experience but that wasn’t the case at all. I understand the hype regarding their wide selection, but everything else is underwhelming — in the future, I will try to buy my fabric elsewhere.

Sadly, Mood is the worst. Sadly, Mood is perhaps the only place in all of the United States where you can find amazing fabrics, notions and embellishments. The NYC location is a complete mess and it smells like sulphur. The employees are hit or miss. Some genuinely want to help you while others are perfectly fine with telling you that they know nothing of their merchandise and cannot help you. Learn to be self-​sufficient, bold and willing to help yourself if you visit Mood– otherwise you’ll feel helpless in a sea of beautiful fabrics.
It’s a shame that the store is so disorganized and nearly impossible to navigate because the selection of goods is outstanding. If you can avoid it, it’s better to order online, get a bunch of gorgeous $ 1 swatches if you’re unsure about the look and hand of the fabric and save yourself a headache. If the employees, outdated, torn patterns and overall mess of the store doesn’t do you in, the oblivious customers will. At any given time I’d say only about 10% of people shopping in the store are actual designers or have any working knowledge of fashion, sewing or design. The other 90% are tourists or people who want to be able to say they get all of their supplies for at Mood to impress people. Most of the customers are wandering about, poking bolts of fabric, clogging up aisles, confused and turning around in circles hoping to bump into Tim Gunn.
Get it together, Mood.

I went for swatches for a home project and I purchase summer dresses. The staff was very helpful throughout the store. If you don’t have your Mood’s discount card just give them your name and they will find your name in the system. Only one elevator was working so huff it up those stairs. Of course, I“LL BE BACK!!!

The few times I pop in here I am reminded of why I never go there. It sucks! The people who work there are un-​attentive, slow, and act put out to be helping you. (Most of them anyway).
Not a place for people actually working in the industry who need to use their time efficiently. Yes, they have a bit of everything, but their selection sucks. And getting help there is a joke!
Not to mention, they treat their customers like criminals the second they walk in, making them check their bags. So if you are in a hurry, like most of us are, you have to get a ticket for your stuff, wave people down to cut stuff cut, then go through a 10 minute charade of them printing out your ticket & getting you signed up for their great rewards card!
Save your time, and go somewhere else.
Side note — Mood Home/​Interior is a completely different story. They are awesome!

I had an customer service experience the other day that was so amazing that I felt I finally had to leave a review. I’ve been going to Mood for years to purchase wonderful fabric and for inspiration.
Recently, I started a business in women’s apparel. I was with my business partner who is also a regular Mood customer. We bought 5 half yards of fabric. I don’t know how we didn’t notice this… we were distracted that day maybe as we were just launching, but we were charged for 5 yards instead of .5 yards on one of them. At $ 15 a yard, this was not an insubstantial price difference. Well, that fabric went in the bag and stayed in there for about 3 months with the receipt.
When we finally pulled out the fabric during the development phase, we noticed the price and the discrepancy on the receipt. I figured there was nothing that could be done. Really, while it was the cashier’s fault, I probably should have noticed such a large difference when signing. And, it had been 3 months. I didn’t expect much.
We went in to purchase something for a project, and I told the story to a cashier who immediately directed me to the owner. He smiled the whole time, looked up the transaction on my partner’s rewards card, and immediately refunded the extra money. He didn’t have to believe my story… I had no proof. But he did and THAT is customer service that you rarely see these days.

This place is huge! All sorts of fabrics here — really a fabric warehouse. The service is great, as someone is always available to help with what fabric to choose. The prices are less negotiable here than in other stores nearby. But all in all, a very good place to start off with if you’re looking for fabric but not sure what to get.

FUN! Mood offers «free» sewing classes… the only problem is there is no way to sign up for this class at the moment unless you physically walk into the store.
The website is not functioning properly. I emailed their MoodU email address asking about the issue. The customer service exchanged some emails with me and confirmed that the site did not reserve a spot for me in the class. Okay. Naturally I thought they would offer to hold a spot for me in this class.
No reply.
I followed up asking for a reply.
No reply.
I sent a screenshot of the error message that appears when attempting to sign up online.
No reply.
I called the store to ask if they could assist me with signing up for the class. The associate was very nice but told me I’d have to sign up online (after I had just told her that the site was not working properly) or physically go to the store to sign up for the class.
I decided to try and sign up again online about a week later assuming they would have addressed the issue. The site was still not fixed.
I emailed MoodU again.
No reply.
This was supposed to be fun!

CROWDED: Any seamstress would love coming here – until you realize the level of tourism that comes through because of… that TV show. There’s definitely going to be a handful of people just taking selfies next to the mood tags, with Swatch, and touching everything in sight saying «this is pretty.» We came here on a Saturday looking for some patterned silk chiffon for a project. It was completely swamped (as expected) but not with customers, with staff members chatting in large pods in the aisles. While the employees were helpful in holding our many bolts of fabrics and making purchases, I couldn’t believe the vast number of them just congregating in every aisle. Bizarre.
SELECTION: there’s a huge selection and for a very specific project we were still overwhelmed with options. There’s a great number of inspirational mannequins as well. Just like you’d see at a Michael Levine in Los Angeles, many of them use only beaded overlays and other pieces of lace to create unique looks on the mannequins.
ORGANIZATION: for the quantity of options in this space, the organization is impeccable. Their policy on not allowing bolts move from one floor to another is key. The employees seem to be well-​versed on what’s in stock and where, especially those who sew regularly.

I visited Mood today and I was extremely disappointed with the service and the staff. I came in looking for two commonly used trimming items and I was completely ignored by several staff and the ones that I got a hold of could not help me. The general atmosphere of Mood was very «snooty.» They all were all so busy helping more important people. (sarcasm)
The first person I asked said, «I don’t speak English» huh? I think as a person working in a sewing store the few words you do know should be the stuff that your selling and where it is… Strike 1.
The second person I see hurriedly walks past me to touch some fabric or something. I walked to her and asked her about trimmings and she pointed to a section where no one is standing to help me. Strike 2.
The third guy looks at me and then looks away as if he’s considering helping someone else and when I asked for what I needed he points back to where I was. He went to look over there and then he said that he had to look for some other person. He started to walk away so I followed him, thinking he’s going to find this person who will help me. He walked to a register… Strike 3. At this point I realized the lack of basic sewing knowledge that the staff had here and left.
I don’t recommend this place to anyone and I won’t be returning. The attitude of the staff is weak, they did not want to help and they are not very knowledgeable. I went to a store one a block away and I was helped immediately and they knew what I was looking for.

As an FIT student, I often make a stop at Mood Fabrics to get inspiration for a collection as they have a very wide range of eye catching fabrics and I like to get a handful of swatches from here to experiment and play with. The store is pretty spacious and organized and its a delight to catch a glimpse of Swatch lazing around.
However, on various occasions, when asking for assistance I’ve been snubbed, or have been given a major attitude. When asking for the price of a bolt of silk for a project, one employee was visibly annoyed with me. She walked away (presumably to check the price) and when I asked her again, she just responded with a rude «I don’t know»
I’ve always felt that because I’m asking for swatches and look like a student, they don’t provide me with the same kind of respect and attentiveness as some other customers they perceive are here to spend more money.
OVERALL: great selection of fabrics, pretty organized store, cute dog but poor customer experience. (coming here fills me with anxiety)

I took an intermediate sewing class here after finishing a beginner class elsewhere. The classes are free but you do have to buy your own materials. The great thing is that they put together a package for you so you can just walk in, tell them what class you are taking and everything is already packed up for you. The materials are pricey but useful. And when they left a component out of my package, they replaced it when I brought my receipt in.
Unfortunately, that package was the only good thing I got out of the class. The teacher was incredibly sweet but did not appear to know how to teach. The website for the class listed certain patterns to choose from and when we started the class, our teacher told us that the options had changed so if we didn’t have the right pattern, we would have to exchange them. Then after I exchanged my pattern for a different one (they would only give me store credit for the difference in price between the patterns) in a size that corresponded to my measurements, the teacher discovered the sizing was off on the packages. It was frustrating that she didn’t know this already.
Our intermediate class took place in the same room as the beginner class. There was a divider separating the room so it was not hard to hear the other teacher instructing his class. I wished he was my teacher. He was very decisive and commanding while my teacher seemed very unsure of herself. Because it was a free class, I stopped going after a couple of weeks. I knew very quickly that the class was a waste of time would have probably dropped it much sooner but the rotating band of assistants was always helpful. Still, there was always too much confusion for the class to be of any use. I felt like I wasn’t learning anything and I figured I had at least gotten some great materials out of the experience.
I do still visit the shop even though I wasn’t a fan of the class. I don’t go there to buy fabrics because the store is too overwhelming for someone like me. But they do have a huge selection of notions and sewing supplies so I visit for those. The women who work the checkout counter as always friendly and helpful.
So, despite my bad experience with the class, I still give Mood 3 stars because their selection of items is so vast. Also, my friend took the course on a different day of the week and had a different teacher. Her description of him made me think she might have the guy who taught the beginner class at the same time as my own class. She gave her class a great review.

Th first class is well organized and you will learn how to work a sewing machine and complete a large tote bag.
The class is free, but you will pay for materials. The home textile store on the first floor has great fabrics for your bag. Try it!

After visiting Mood, I realized it was possible to feel both overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time. Shocking, I know.
I went to Mood because of Project Runway, primarily, and because there are several projects I’m working on that require specific fabric. I know my way around a fabric store. I was excited to see what Mood had to offer, and honestly thought I’d find everything I needed.
I could not have been more wrong.
On one hand, it was really fun to walk around and look at and feel the many, many bolts of fabric. I can see why Project Runway uses this store, because some of the fabrics are totally amazing (and expensive). But really unique stuff.
Unfortunately for me, I was looking for more basic fabrics, and did not have much luck. When I tried to ask for help, I was simply pointed to another part of the store — even when I tried to explain that I had been through that part of the store, twice, and did not see the kind of fabric I was looking for. Then, I had one staff member basically tell me to stop touching the fabric (I was considering it for a skirt, but thought the fabric might be too heavy), and he curtly cut a swatch off, handed it to me and put the bolt away. I was literally standing there, totally unsure of how to respond, while he walked off to take care of someone else.
After unsuccessfully wandering around each floor, I figured it would be fun to get some simple notions. And maybe it would be, but I couldn’t find them. I honestly couldn’t find anything I was looking for, and no one there wanted to help me.
So, on one hand, they obviously have a much nicer selection than your typical old Jo-​Ann fabric, but finding what you’re looking for and getting reasonable help is impossible.
The New York attitude completely negates any concept of customer service. I don’t think I’ll go back.

Came here with my mom because she wanted to buy fabric to make her own unique dress for my wedding (what was she thinking?). As soon as you enter the door, it’s overwhelming. Lots of aisles with lots of selections but it just seems cramped. Most people here are fashion designers or fashion students who are very serious about finding the fabric they need and will shove you if need be. The staff wasn’t very helpful, it seemed like they didn’t want to be bothered. Since the fabrics are stacked on top of one another, it’s hard to actually see some of them, especially since some go up very high. We asked one girl to find a certain color for us and she scoffed like there was no tomorrow.
Personally, I have no creative bug whatsoever, so all this place did was confuse me. I couldn’t imagine turning any of the fabrics into a dress. My mom, on the other hand, is good with that kind of thing and really had an eye for things. However, she was very unhappy with the selection of fabric that could be used for an evening gown in any of the colors she wanted. We spent an hour in here for no reason — we wound up leaving and my mom bought her dress elsewhere.
My favorite part was chasing Swatch around the store trying to snap a pic.
