Mrs. Green’s Natural Market

I came here twice within 4 months of each other and both times I bough expired items. Once a canned good and once a dairy product. When I told the manager they didn’t seem very phased by it. Will not return again.

So hard to find clean food in the city and Mrs. Greens has the best organic and non-​GMO selection I have seen! In addition, the team is open to feedback about which products to carry. Just yesterday they agreed to add 2 organic meats at my request! Love Mrs. Greens and hope sincerely they open more up — and soon!

Promise more than they deliver. They have a wide variety of items in the 2-​floor store, but generally priced higher than D’agostino’s around the corner. Their take-​out and ready to go food look appealing but the soups, prepared salads and prepared hot foods that I have tried have been flat tasting and disappointing. Breads and pastries taste and feel commercial. I have yet to find a store clerk there who was genuinely helpful and friendly.
I see no reason to switch from Dag’s!

Been a few months since they’ve opened, and it looks like the growing pains are over! Great selection of beautiful organic fruits, veggies, snacks, cheese, meat, seafood, you name it, at very good prices.
Sales are always awesome. Smoothies are 50% off Wednesdays, and this month organic blueberries for $ 3.99 a half shell, Kombucha $ 2.50 a bottle, humongous cherry stone clams 50 cents each, organic chicken for $ 3 a lb… absolutely great deals especially considering this is the West Village. I think it might even be better than Whole Foods! I only hope they open more locations.

They have good variety of prepared foods to select from. Looks like they are focused on natural, organic, non gmos. I got the Mai summer roll and was delicious. Coming again.

Absolutely love this store!!! The seating area could be improved and expanded but otherwise this place is a gem. Incredible prepared foods. Great unique selection!

We love the convenience and prices of organics at Mrs Greens, but the regularity that items ring up much more then advertised is alarming. This has happened every time we go. Fortunately we keep an eye out and call them on it. I imagine that the majority of their customers don’t pick that up and had probably given the store thousands of extra dollars since they opened. Not to mention that at least half of the employees don’t seem to be knowledgeable or even care. I really hope they step up their game because we do like the store otherwise.

This was a former Gristedes that I saw a huge rat run behind the Lucky Charms once. He scared me.
Thankfully, a duane reade later… I haven’t seen any here, but have experienced gross stuff… Inbox me for details but use your imagination. Food handling related.
Incorrect pricing is the norm… basically everything that was said about the workers and all else in the lower rated reviews were true. No need to write it.
Have fun also being leered at by the male workers as well — if you are a woman — especially downstairs.

When Mrs. Green’s first opened this past summer, I was happy to have an alternative to the overpriced, poorly laid out Westside Market that I’d been going to for over 5 years. The aisles there are cramped, the prices are too high, etc.
Mrs. Greens seemed different… at first. The first few weeks they were open, the staff was super-​friendly, and the prices were very reasonable by New York City standards.
But all of that changed very quickly.
Now, most of the checkout people barely address you during the transaction – instead they speak to one another as if you’re not there, joking around, and sometimes pausing inappropriately before giving you change or taking your money if they’re in the middle of a conversation. And they frequently make errors with pricing so be sure to pay attention to how they’re ringing you up before you pay.
Rarely can anyone tell you where to find even the simplest items, so you just have to go search for stuff yourself.
If you want anything simple (like bottled lemon juice, stella artois beer, decent but basic coffee, bounty paper towels) you’re out of luck. Everything claims to be recycled/​organic/​whatever and just too expensive.
They claim to be «green» and use paper bags at checkout (which I discovered last night isn’t always better, especially when it’s pouring rain out) yet they have their rotisserie chickens in big plastic containers. And speaking of that, the first month they were open, a rotisserie chicken was $ 5.99, and as of today it’s $ 8.99.
The salad bar is the most ridiculous one I’ve ever seen — there’s a huge column on one side of it that makes it impossible to reach certain items, and the trays are set in so deeply that you need to have extra long arms or a spear-​headed selfie stick in order to capture anything with the provided tongs and spoons. And the protective overhang over the salad bar is so low that it’s really, really challenging to use so I gave up on the salad bar after one visit.
They often have expired packaged chicken and meats in their refrigerated section, so be sure to check the expiration dates.
The one thing I do like about this place is that the aisles are wider than some local grocery stores are – but that’s about all Mrs. Greens has going for it at this point.
Guess it’s back to D’agostino and Westside Market for me.

With extremely limited grocery options in the neighborhood, mrs. Greens was much needed! Fresh and organic produce, great meat & fish department downstairs, amazing prepared foods selections and awesome variety of local specialities. They also have Dough Donuts in the coffee bar — my favorite! The prices are slightly high– but no more than D’Agostinos around the corner… And their food is never fresh. I don’t mind paying if the quality is there.

Amazing selection of fresh food and drinks but oh my, the prices… even by west village standards it’s extortionate…

I like this place because of all the
prepared foods. They have lots of hot bars and selections on the salad bars thart are not expensive. Also it’s all fresh and organic. Most days there are free samples in several places throughout the store.
This is not a place to do your «weekly» grocery shopping. Does anyone do that anymore? The prices are way too expensive in the meat and deli department. They may be even more costly than Whole Foods. I will stick to Fairway for those things.
This is a very nice addition to the neighborhood with great service and friendly workers.

This place is so awesome I wish there was one near me. Small but they’ve got all the essentials plus some. Everyone is friendly and helpful and those samples! Seriously last time I was there I got a quarter of a goat cheese arugula tomato panini.
Best thing they have: avocado chicken salad. Tastes amazing, mayo free. Could eat for lunch everyday.

Relatively expensive specialty grocer with nice produce, lots of supplements, fresh baked bread, selection of meats and fish in basement, and large selection of organic options. Definitely not the cheapest grocer around, but very convenient and has a ton of prepared foods on the first floor in the back.

Very upscale supermarket on Hudson in west village. Stopped in for a quick snack. They have soup bar prepared foods and a juice bar. Coffee and variety of great looking muffins and wild doughnuts. Must be zillion calories. Had a chocolate croissant that was very good like a whole foods store but not as expensive.

Nice yet tired concept and still that brand new feel to it (guess that’s why they took forever and a day to open), with friendly staff but some crazy prices.

I walked inside around 8:30pm and the 1^st thing I see is a very long line of customers, wrapped around the front and side of the store, waiting to be checked out. These customers were huddled in the fruits and vegetable section… No one could even shop in that area because of the checkout line. I knew I’d have to squeeze past this line to begin my shopping. I almost turned around to leave and then realized that I’ve not been here before and I should at least take a peek. Besides, I don’t have to buy anything!
It’s an attractive store with organic items and the high prices will probably appeal to the Manhattan millionaires –Seven dollars for a very small bag of kale chips? The sale items were about fifty cents off regular prices (not 50%!) –No real bargains and they may not want bargain shoppers here anyway. I think they’re trying to be high-​end and that’s okay. But, you better give me superior service and products for high-​end prices!
They have a very attractive deli section. But, the staff is not knowledgeable about their merchandise. They have tempting hot dinners already prepared that you can order from behind the counter. But, the staff is not organized and there were five of them working behind the counter and only one person helping customers when I was there. The others were helping each other & ignoring the line of patrons. One lady did eventually come up to me, asked if she could help me and I ordered the meatballs. She smiled and said, «Those are great. I made them myself this morning.» I thought, ‘It’s almost 9pm.’ Thankfully, one of her staff couldn’t do his job alone and needed her assistance to find something. She began working with him and then looked at me and walked away –not to be seen again. That gave me my pause to rethink getting these meatballs that have possibly been steaming all day long perhaps? The only person assisting customers, was still plating the same meal that she was plating when I had walked up to this counter. It was interesting to observe her, because it was as though she was fearful that she was going to put too much food on this customer’s plate. She was very careful.
I decided to forsake my idea of getting a light bite from their deli, since they clearly did not know what they were doing in front of customers. So, I can only imagine what they are doing behind customer’s eyes. Plus, the item that I was interested in looked fresh, but had been prepared early that morning.
Believe it or not, I grabbed a couple of boxes of Yogi Bedtime tea, because I’m out. And a seltzer water for my walk home. Therefore, I had to get in their long line that was still wrapped around the inside of the store. At this time, I did get to take a look at their fruits and vegetables. I guess I waited 10 minutes and it was no big deal.
Once I got to the cashier and handed him my money, he said that he was only accepting credit cards. I didn’t have my wallet on me because I had been out running earlier and I was still in my gym shorts. I only had cash in my pocket. The cashier said that he couldn’t help me. Another cashier said, «Next.» I came to her and the same thing happened. I asked, «Who takes cash here?» I got no answer and so I got back in the front of the line, while those who had been behind me were making their purchases. I asked again, «Who takes cash here?» Finally one of the cashiers said, «I’m the cashier taking cash. I’ll check you out in a minute» And she did.
I don’t have short patience and I found the whole experience very interesting –more so than frustrating. What should be so simple, became confusing and inefficient –from ordering an over the counter meal, to paying for a box of tea and a soda.
I may return again and receive a different experience. I’ll let you know.

This place has potential but some VERY fundamental aspects have to be fixed, for example:
— STAFF: were not trained at all. Not one of them knows where anything is or if they have this or that product in the store. The cheese specialist, did not know what «sheep milk cheese» was, for example. The worker slicing lox, was slicing the salmon like it was meatloaf, in vertical thick slices and in the process of removing the dark parts with his hands, further butchering each slice (I don’t blame him, he wasn’t trained by the management).
— PACKAGED FOOD: beware, a lot of it is EXPIRED! I had to check every package to make sure I was taking food that I could still eat.
— FRESH FOOD: mushrooms had mold, fresh pasta had no expiration date printed on packaging but the green and yellow stains on the pasta made me think twice, mangoes were $ 4/​each! Overall I was scared to buy anything that was fresh.
I am writing this in the hopes that the owners /​managers read this and do something to improve this store. The location is great and we really need this type of store in the neighborhood, but something has to be done about the staff and the freshness of the food.

Great selection of fresh organic produce, whole and cut. They have all the main organic and natural brands plus some specialty products like rillettes from Piggery that you can’t get anywhere else. Meat section is largely conventional meat and can’t compete with nearby sustainable butchers. Prices aren’t bad for this neighborhood, which needs better grocery stores. They also have a large prepared food section that looks pretty good. Wish they were more transparent about what’s in it – for all I could tell, it was conventional meat. Probably still your best option for natural lunch on the go in this area. Pastries looked good, but I didn’t try any. Very nice and attentive staff. Elevator works now.
Not sure what to think about their labor standards…

I’ve been going 2x/​day since they opened last Monday. Mrs. Green’s just increased neighborhood ethnic diversity by 100%, but only for the employees : — /​Additionally, it’s refreshing to have a nearby competitor to D’Agostino, who has not upped their game in the 1+ year anticipation.
Mrs. Greens had a few kinks in their debut, including an elevator that didn’t work, but the ground floor alone had more than enough to offer: A coffee bar, sushi/​sandwiches, salad bar, hot food bar, bulk food and an array or organic body and facial products. Staff is friendly, products are surprisingly reasonably priced (with D’Ags as the barometer), and flow of the stoor is welcoming. Some minor issues are: pricing confusion during checkout (it seems that several bulk items are challenging to scan or determine price at register), great coffee (Stumptown) at coffee bar but not the best brewing (my coffee was a bit weak on two occasions), and some tight shopping corners where customers or staff were blocking aisles.
Overall, a great new store with some questions to answer about unions I would guess, based upon the 2-​person flyer distribution from what look like store employees, but are protestors wearing Mrs. Green’s shirts.
