OMG I must concur! Tried this placed because it’s near work and based on the reviews here since my regular wash and set hair stylist is on vacation. Mayra absolutely gives the perfect blowout! I haven’t had a perm since the end of January and my kinky roots are terrible. I went on a Tuesday afternoon and was more than pleased and plan to go back for my relaxer because she uses Affirm. She told me I really needed a relaxer and a trim and that she will make my hair beautiful and I believe her! True you need an interpreter sometimes, but her skills trump everything!

If you want a Dominican hairstylist with a perfect blowdry, look for Mayra. She is really talented with all ethnic hairs! I have her for ten years and I tried other hairstylists, there’s not anyone like my Mayra.

I have had miracles worked at this Salon. My hair is really kinky and I don’t use relaxer, all natural. After I had my daughter, I was so dry that my hair literally started felting — I could not get the severe knots out and seriously thoughts I would have to shave my head. I headed down there and, yes, it took a while but the lady worked miracles. It wasn’t the last time either, though that was the most severe. I don’t fuss with my hair much, so it tends to get in bad condition. But whenever I go to this place, my hair gets soft and easy to manage for months after. I only go to the salon a few times a year and I always go here. The reason on star is missing is that they have no clue how to style natural kinky curls. They always blow out my hair and by the next day I’ve got a big puff on my head. The way I do it myself is put a little gel/mouse in it while it’s wet and that keeps the curls looking pretty and nothing frizzes. But I’ve learned to just bring my hair gel and tell the lady to leave my hair wet. As for atmosphere, you’d think you died and went to D.R. Music, chattering, people coming in with products for the ladies, etc. Typical fare in most hispanic and black salons.

Its a spacious salon but so crowded on weekends. It has all the typical qualities of a spanish hair salon we all love to hate: merengue music, ladies yapping away, random people walking in selling clothes(eek), food, makeup, fake cds and more ladies yapping away. Press play on your iPod play list and ignore… Sounds like the start of a negative review but I’m used to this from most uptown salons so its really not a complaint. The reason I come here mostly is for Mayra for a perfect blowout. Silky smooth hair that doesn’t frizz in humid weather. Perfect for people who have curly thick hair that’s difficult to blow out. I don’t come here often because it isn’t close by. I only come here when my go-to girl is on vacation, but i may have to reconsider.

I don’t think words can adequately describe this place, but I’ll attempt to anyway. I’ve had my kinky black hair for quite some time now, so I thought it would be a great time for a change and for me to straighten my hair. The place is literally across the street from my place, so its convenient. Convenience has its price it appears. I’m no nube to having my hair done, so I asked the lady there if they can do my kind of hair. They’re like of course(in really bad English). They didn’t have any of the relaxers I’m used to using, so I said what the heck, I’ll try something new. This new no-lye relaxer is «really really good». Right. And that folks, was the extent of the English used in my experience. Everything else was in Spanish. My Spanish is not very good at all, so here I am struggling to get my point across. It was just so ridiculous at one point, I just went into auto-pilot on the whole process. They straightened my hair alright, which lasted for the 4 days that I didn’t wash my hair. Let me add that they gave me the poofy bouffant old lady hair look when I left the place. The instant I washed my hair ½ of it curled right back up on me. I haven’t had such hair trauma in years. So, for their lack of understanding kinky black hair and the need for lye relaxers, their inability to communicate in basic English and the overall traumatic experience of what should have been a happy time, they get one star and my eternal contempt.
