A neighborhood tradition, we’ve become regulars! The staff is reasonably friendly, always helpful and willing to go an extra step to help guests navigate the library system. It’s also one of the few local libraries that’s equipped with a glass enclosed display case, which invariably holds truly attractive, artistic efforts — NOW showing, until the end of November, is a fanciful collection of decorative afro-caribbean craft/art that accentuates a kinda cozy vibe to the visit. Neighborhood kids are after school regulars, nanny’s are given to parking strollers along the lobby walls, elders sit comfortably with newspapers, books, or magazines for hours and decent eats abound in reasonable proximity to it’s location. May the doors of Bloomingdale branch stay forever open… amen!

I really like this place. The air conditioning is top shelf and they have lots of cool books and places to nap. I went with one of my girlfriends once and she actually took a book home with her which I thought was pretty neat. It also has a tight skateboard ramp right out front if you can rip a 180 at speed. Saw quite a few rats on the sidewalk but I think rats are adorable so I was into it. Can’t wait to go back.

It’s a neighborhood institution and the last bastion of a true democracy. This place kept me from a wayward adolescence (well, almost), as well as it serves not only the Johnny-come-lately wanna-be hipsters, but the low-income locals who have been in the neighborhood since the A&P was around the corner. (Major «Wordsmith Chica» brownie points if you ACTUALLY stepped foot in there).
Lots of space to study and plug in your electronics. Free wi-fi as long as its not acting up. Noise ranges from hearing a pin drop to rambunctious ankle-biters running amok. Bring ear/headphones or earplugs (like my neon-orange pair) and you’ll be just fine among fellow bibliophiles enjoying Jane Austen to bell hooks to John Irving to Anne Lamott. (I smile as I behold an ACTUAL book, not those darned e-books)

Nice and quiet! Even with school kids. A decent amount of ac plugs in various locations. Comfy seating mixed in with the standard hard-backed chairs. Two levels. Wheelchair accessible. A nice place to hang out and use the free wi-fi.

ASTORIA, NY

I went here a couple of times to study for the LSAT and found that if quiet, undisturbed reading/studying is what you need, this is not the place to go.
It was a small library, looked like a decent selection. The kids floor upstairs was way too rowdy when I was there and the size of the place made whispered conversations echo. I took my books and went back to my apartment. I will come here in the future though if I ever need to take out a book.
