This place is a god damn joke. DO NOT JOIN HERE. I just got back from «canceling» my membership.
All year I’ve been complaining to corporate about how they turn off their lights to give a 15 minute warning to the weightlifters (in the basement-​no windows) of their closing time. My fiancé is down there every night finishing his workout and often with heavy weights over his head. We both complained and they went right to management who spoke with me over the phone. He said his employees need to go home to their families so people need to leave on time. I said I understand but we aren’t there past 11pm and if you really wanted to get out of there, put a sign on your door that says you close at 10:45pm or have your employees make an announcement nicely.
The next day at the gym, 2 employees with their jackets on are SCREAMING at people that the gym is closing and it was only 10:30pm (gym closes at 11pm). We heard them from the studio glass before they came in to scream at us.
After that, I went elsewhere but kept my membership for the convenience of their location being one block from my apartment. They kept making it pitch black in the basement so I complained one last time via their corporate website and told them that I didn’t want to speak to the manager at that location (because it clearly didn’t work the last time) and that I just wanted them to STOP TURNING OFF THE BASEMENT LIGHTS and YELLING AT PEOPLE.
I got a phone call back from the manager (Jeff) at that location. Jeff left me a voicemail saying he has never heard of this complaint before in his time working there. I’m not sure if Jeff is new or not but you would think a new manager would review issues the club was having with the old manager and try to improve them. Besides Jeff «never having heard of such complaints» our friends who go there have also complained. My fiancé has yelled at them in person for turning the lights out.
I called them the first week in January to cancel my membership. The associate said I had to come in person to cancel and that I can cancel at anytime before February 1^st because I was a month to month after my first year. Today is the 26^th and I went to go and cancel. Of course JEFF is the one at the counter who is going to cancel my membership. He said That I need to give them 30 days notice so my membership is cancelled and I’ll be billed for February. I told him that I spoke with his employee over the phone and his response was that because he doesn’t know who I spoke to, that he couldn’t help me and shrugs his shoulders.
In addition to the employees sucking so bad, their corporate website is a piece of shit. You can not get a hold of anyone via phone to speak to these terrible managers’ bosses. You can navigate their shitty drop downs to a category that isn’t relevant to your complaint, only to get directed to their shitty management. THIS COMPANY IS A JOKE.
Equinox in 4 blocks further and well worth the the extra $ 100. It’s safe, clean and the employees are on their game.
NYSC Corporate:
Refill your paper towels so people can wash their hands and then DRY them.
Refill your sanitation wipes so people can wipe down the machines.
Fix the god damn TV’s connected to machines. Every machine has an issue with sound or delayed channel changing.
Stop turning off the lights on people lifting weights. (We even have a recording of this actually happening its ridiculous)
Replace your crusty towels
Fix the doors to the bathroom stalls. They barely close/​lock.
Hire competent management
Make it easier for your costumers to contact you and better your services/​facilities so they don’t end up having to go to public forums like Unilocal to expose you to potential members.

I was trying to cancel my membership on the first day of the month, and the manager Jeff told me the computer system was down. He would give me a call back once he put in the request and I NEVER receive a call back. I followed up w/​them on the next week. The manager Jeff told me he would processed the request now and I would have to pay for the first week of membership in the next month. I did give them 30 days notice for the cancellation, I don’t understand why would I need to bury the cost when their computer system was not working!!! and never received a followup phone call like he said. Jeff simply told me there is NOTHING he can do. Not even apologize for not calling me back. Does that mean if I don’t call back and check, my membership would never cancel!!! I would not recommend this place to anyone! It sounds like a scam to me.

This place is such a horror. If you want a dirty poorly maintained place, then this is the place for you. If you like rude people who use their phones, grunt and clank the weughts then you are all set.
I have to admit the $ 20 monthly fee is a bargain. Of couse they won’t even give you a towel!
On the other hand, again, they are a bunch of crooks, when they lowered the monthly price from $ 70 to $ 20, they «upgraded» my membership without telling me and kept charging $ 70. They totally suck!

the shadiest one i have visited. i left some things in a locker on accident and came back the NEXT DAY, and all they had left to give me was my shower shoes, stole my perfume and shampoo.

I was robbed (inside the gym) on the first day I was working out in the gym. After calling 911 and getting everything sorted out, the manager was the least sympathetic and didn’t even issue a proper apology.
I joined the gym because of it’s low price and the way the manager praised the gym. He told me that they had great members and entire gym is a great place to work out but after losing almost all my money, ids, business cards and also the manager being unsympathetic and oblivious to the fact that one of his members got robbed really put me off from this place. I wouldn’t recommend this branch of NYSC to anyone.

I would give 0stars if I could. First off this is a complaint not as a customer but as a potential employee. I should have read the reviews for this place before going there because these complaints are true. Incompetent management, no communication between the workers and onto me or just absolute lack of care. Usually my logic would tell me ‘would you treat your customers like that?’ But clearly from the reviews I am not the only one furious with staff at this location.
So it all started with an interview that I got for a Tuesday with the manager Francis. I was excited for less than 15minutes when I got another call telling me to reschedule because the manager won’t be in Tuesday. Why don’t you know his schedule when you are the person making interviews? Anyways I rescheduled for Wednesday 3pm and I got there at like 2:30pm. I was greeted and told the girl at the desk that I came in for an interview with Francis only to be told that he left at 2pm! Wth? One employee retreats to an office for like 20minutes supposedly calling the manager with no success. I left my name and number to receive a call back for a reschedule, which I never received. I called them 2days later to get updated only to be told that the manager is not in again! I need to call him on a weekday from 10am-​7pm. That’s funny, my interview fell within that time frame.
I have never experienced crap service like this ever as a customer and am equally offended and disgusted that nysc could have such incompetent workers and crappy service. I should have known to stop trying after the manager Francis wasn’t there for the interview. If your company isn’t going to fulfill your duties and consider people with some dignity and respect, then don’t bother people. Nysc clearly does not give a damn about either their customers or potential employees.

You guys are embarrassing yourselves with this new towel policy. I’ll be canceling after 10 years, but thank you as I finally needed the push to join a real gym like equinox.

While the gym itself is probably sufficient for no-​frills gym, the management is extremely terrible. I went to the gym to check it out and the man showing me the gym insisted I try their 10 day trial. After telling him I’d be out of town the next 9 days so it wouldn’t be worth it to try it yet, he told me he could delay the trial for a week. This charges my credit card for a full month and initiation fee ($ 80+), but it can be refunded as long as I canceled before the 10-​day trial was up. Luckily, I could tell the manager was incompetent so I called to confirm which day my trial actually started. Even after I reminded him, he started it the day I went in for my visit. So, I had to cancel my membership before ever trying the gym.
Customer service said that I would be issued a refund in 7 – 10 business days. It had been one month and 2 days since I have canceled, and I have yet to receive a refund. I called customer service and was told the date they supposedly issued my refund (which was actually 16 days after the cancellation). My CC company said they would spot the refund and handle NYSC from here, thankfully.
Additionally, I am still looking for a gym for the remainder of winter. I thought the livingsocial would be great for that purpose since there are no commitments. Turns out I can’t use the livingsocial because (even though the fine print says no one who has USED the facility may have this deal) I am in the system from the 10-​day trial I never got to use because of the mistake of the manager.

WELL THIS PLACE IS ABSOLUTELY THE WORST. If you want lazy management, a poor uneducated personal training staff, and a gym that is always crowded where you have to wait 10 – 20 minutes to use any machine, treadmill, or squat rack this is your type of gym. I literally don’t even know where to begin…

Thrilled about the $ 40 annual fee hidden at the bottom of my contract. Signed up two months ago and already have to pay a fee to «lock in my rate». Never had to do that at a gym before, so shady.

This gym has really terrible equipment and took a long time to get new spin bikes (half of which didn’t even work) The instructors are good for classes.
I just called to cancel and they hit with me a whole year of maintenance fees. I’m part of the gym for 1 month in 2015 but have to pay a YEAR’s worth of gym maintenance fees. Really ridiculous. Glad I’m leaving.

This NYSC is located not too far from my job, but I generally wind up going to the ones at Grand Central or 41^st and 3^rd instead. This location is much smaller than what I’m used to, which I suspect is partly the consequence of being crammed into a lower area of a larger building.
This NYSC has been renovated to the new standard. Faux wood paneling and a wide open reception give this away. The rest is fairly standard. The first floor consists mostly of cardio machines, all kind of crammed together pretty tightly. The locker room, weights and studio are downstairs. Again, it has almost everything you’ll need for a great workout BUT the stuff is pretty bunched up. While waiting to take a class, I wound up getting in the way of a machine inadvertently and even after I moved, I was party in the way of someone else. Be warned.
I took an evening Boot Camp Class and it was very fun. The instructor was cheerful and funny. The class was great and I definitely got my sweat on. I would take it again for sure.
The staff at this gym was very friendly, from the trainers to the people working the front desk. While not my favorite NYSC, this is definitely a good branch.

No steam room and no water fountain downstairs. Pathetic that I have to walk upstairs after every workout. First gym I’ve had this issue in.

Pretty impressed with this NYSC.
Why I love it:
–Clean, so clean! Seriously I don’t feel like I’m going to get some rare disease in here like I do at the other NYSC locations I’ve been to.
–Friendly staff. I came here after a horrible experience at the location at Grand Central. I signed up for a class over there but had to cancel because the locker room was out of service and I didn’t want to smell like a sweaty pig all day. I asked the guy at the front desk about the classes here and although, they didn’t have any this particular morning, he was very helpful, friendly, and actually listed to me complain about the other location.
–Less crowded. At least when I go (6:30am-8:30am). I had no issues getting a cardio machine or a weight machine. I did see signs that limit your time to 30 minutes during peak hours.
–Bags in the locker room to put dirty clothes. You have no idea how key this is unless you sweat like me.
Why it didn’t get 5 stars:
–I couldn’t find a water fountain for the life of me.
–The TV on the treadmill I was on didn’t work. Not like I use it but I did want to catch some news this morning.
–Not a lot of classes or class varieties.
This might just become my go to gym in Midtown.

Here are pros and cons:
1– has every machine you need for workout
2– 5 star for cleanliness
3– great attitude of staff
1– most of the tv on treadmills don’t work properly
2– no water fountain in basement level
3– some cardio machines needs to be upgraded
PS: Ask for weekly pass if you don’t have membership :)

Totally sucks. No water fountain downstairs. Locker room is dirty and smells like mold. The staff is rude and incompetent. And to add insult to injury, the hours are inconvenient. The 24 hour fitness only a few blocks away is bigger, cleaner, with far more convenient hours, and has a pool. Don’t waste your money at NYSC. This place deserves to go out of business.

This place is unreal! Vending machines have been broken for 3 weeks, personnel are not attentive and can barely bother to greet members. Today, music was so loud that members were complaining… to no avail!
The only reason I belong is because of it’s location…

A good gym in Manhattan is one of those things that you learn to keep to yourself. Otherwise you risk having it be overrun by those who have just been let in on the secret. So, the only reason I’m posting this review is that I’m moving soon.
This is a good gym because it has pretty good opening hours and it’s usually not too crowded. If you compare it to the nearby Equinox, which is twice the price, I’ve found it to be less crowded, and less space is taken up by people paying $ 100 or more per hour to bounce giant green balls with a «personal trainer» (which is a problem at Equinox).
There are a few strange things about this gym, however. The sauna is always set at a temperature that feels like a hot summer day in New York, which is not what the average sauna goer is looking for. In the basement, which houses the majority of the gym, there are doors that lead to a parking garage. Through those doors there’s often cigarette smoke coming in, which is not very nice when you’re working out.
A while ago, I left my water bottle in the gym. I asked in the reception if anyone had turned it in, and they said no. It was the second time this had happened, so I got this crazy idea that someone working there was hoarding bottles. I went to the janitor’s closet, and lo and behold, there it was! The pleasure I felt from being right overcame my anger at the attempted theft of my water bottle.
It’s still a good gym.

Yup, it’s small. But it’s super-​clean, bright, efficient, no-​frills, and the whole staff has an excellent, energetic attitude. Two floors: cardio machines on the ground floor, weights and fitness room on the lower floor. Ample towels always available. Everything has the look of a recently renovated space, especially the locker rooms.
Why should being «crowded» fetch this place miserly one-​star reviews? Frankly, this location doesn’t need to be bigger, given the bigger NYSC on Lex and 51^st, the Vanderbilt Y, and assorted other gym options it’s competing with. And it’s New York City, people. Learn to deal with high-​demand situations, and/​or maybe don’t work out at peak hours, and/​or go and double your membership dues at the next gym chain.

NYSC — easy, cheap, great staff. It’s just what I need in a gym. I’m a long time athlete and don’t need much to impress me. I’m used to working out in a basement with 60 other people on my team. I go at 6:30 am, it’s fairly crowded at that time! There is always room for me to do my cardio. There are a surprising amount of machines for the small space. The locker rooms are clean and have everything you need to shower and go to work, which I do every morning. The weight area down stairs is ok, I’d like more free weights space, but most people don’t do free weights so I understand.
If you’re looking for more of a spa-​gym, this is not for you. This is a gym for gym rats and cardio freaks. You get in, get it done, and get out. If Jess G is sweating from changing, I suggest you come to the gym more often.
