New York University Federal Credit Union

I opened an account here and was basically underwhelmed by lack of service. Their app for remote deposit doesn’t work, their hours are lousy.
I started getting notices about fees if I did not have enough activity (which is interesting considering how hard it is to access any service here) and closed my account soon after.
I like the idea of being part of an FCU affiliated with NYU and would probably give them another chance if I understood that there was a vast improvement in service and policies, but as it stands I am staying away until and unless I hear that there’s been a significant restructuring.

Inconsistent and Unpleasant Customer Service Experience.
Last December, I used their in-​store ATM to withdraw $ 100 in cash, and I got a $ 100 bill instead of five $ 20 bills. I went to the employee in the front of the office asking for changes, and she refused me flat out. «No changes,» she said in a rude manner. I could tell from her tone that she had no sympathy and had no inclination to help customers. This is very inconsistent customer service because just a few weeks ago one of their employees was able to help me break some large bills. I am a NYU faculty, and I am ashamed of our own credit union.

After 28 years with another University’s Federal Credit Union, I made the mistake of assuming these guys would all be equally awesome. Boy was I ever wrong. The priorities here are all messed up. Customer service is at the bottom of the heap. If you dont access your account for a while, they fine you 10 bucks a month. This is usury, plain and simple, except that they are not lending me money, I’m lending them money. in my case it essentially was the equivalent of ME paying THEM 15% interest to keep my money for a year.
STAY AWAY!!!

this place should be deemed illegal and shut down by the NY Banking Dept immediately. It’s run like a student bake sale and not a professional student bank.
1) hours are 9−3… who the hell is only open until 3pm in the financial world unless you’re on London time?! Oh and obviously they’re not open on the weekend so if you ever want to make a deposit it better be within those tight hours.
2) Five biz day hold times on checks that they will not inform you about. Put a check in on Tuesday? Fuck you, you wont see your money till the following week.
3) No emergency after hours line. Not even for their issued Visa card. I had a problem once with my card on Friday night and couldn’t get assistance until the following Monday. After 9am…
4) Don’t even think about disputing one single charge because it will fuck up your entire account. Trust me
5) really rude staff. I brought in a few checks to deposit along with a good deal of cash and the rep looked up from her phone that she was texting on and said «deposit? use the ATM machine.»
6) deposit cash into ATM and you have a 1 biz day hold on it. ON CASH! I’ve never seen such a thing and I’ve been with a lot of banks
7) there’s a ton of other shit that revolves around inconvenience
Obviously this is a small credit union– I don’t expect TD level of service or their convenience. But come on… the whole point of a credit union is to receive a better rate of return and to feel appreciated for dumping your hard earned $ into their shitty organization. They offer neither. Will be pulling out of this place as soon as I finish this review.

Checked this tiny (at least physically) CU for NYU affiliates out and the nice guy explained their policies like a minimum balance and account-​opening fee, so I’ll stick with my current CU and possibly use their COOP ATM (inside, didn’t check if you can swipe in when they’re closed).
