Last July, in search of a contractor for a small kitchen counter expansion(and possibly two other small projects), I was recommended to Kris @ NY Rainbow, Inc. He came in, discussed options, and I sent him a follow-up email with a more detailed sketch that took be about two hours to create… he replied a few days later with a reasonable estimate. I replied a few days later(still in July) that I’d be most likely interested in ONLY the kitchen project(about a $ 2000 job), and asked him of his availability for work in October. He seemed fine with that, and told me to email him in September when the dates were closer. When I followed up in September as he asked, he told me that he was now booked through December. Obviously frustrated, I asked him about performing the work in April, and even offered some money/deposit upfront to show him I was serious about this work, and about«booking» him for a specific time. About two month went by without a response, so I sent him an email in January to restart the momentum for a(hopeful) April time frame. I spent another two hours updating the sketch and adding more details(including measurements) to hopefully simplify the process. So far, so so — why the two stars then? Well, at this point, Kris replies back that insurance and protection would be an additional $ 200, a nominal fee that I was curious about. When I asked him why I’d have to pay for insurance he already has, he barked back at me that my project was too small for his interests, and that any profit he’d have reaped was already accounted for in the emails we exchanged. All I was looking for was an answer, not a negotiation. So basically six months after our first contact, Kris decides to tell me that my project isn’t worth his time, then acts like he’s doing me a favor by even talking to me and not billing me for it!!! Had he been upfront in July/August when we first spoke, I’d have been more than happy to pursue other options. I’d probably have my kitchen finished by now too… I can’t knock his work because I’ve seen it and liked it — hopefully others will have better luck than I did :/
