I came here for the first time and was so wowed! The place is small but pleasant and the mood is light and cheerful. I tried the salmon(wow!), tuna(wow!), yellow tail(wow!), the beef sushi(wow!), etc. I remembered I just kept saying«wow!» to myself. The staff here all very friendly and i can see they enjoy working there and care for their customers. In this place you can find the best quality sushi for the most reasonable price. If you come here once, you know you’ll become their regular customers! Highly n strongly recommended!

Awful. Firstly, sushi was not good at all — had zero flavor. Secondly and most importantly, I got really sick from the food. Stay away.

I got the shrimp tempura lunch special. The shrimp tempura was fried in a much crispier way than I’d like, and I would have preferred the lunch special to come with Miso soup rather than half an udon. The udon was disappointing(lots of soy sauce? Not sure, I’m no expert). Like other reviews said, it is very small– four seats and a handful of bar seats.

i always walk in for takeout because I’m always in a rush. First off, everyone in the place is so friendly everytime I walk in. After a long day at the office, it really is a nice gesture to step inside from the cold weather and be greeted by such pleasant people. The food, amazing and nothing short of that. If you look at the presentation of the sushi it is by far the best I have ever see. The food is FRESH always, they have a dedication to their food preparation and quality which I can say is the best in the city. Oita Sushi, change nothing. Keep doing exactly what you do which is providing a friendly, clean and great quality restaurant. And I love your shrimp tempura udon, I have to try the curry udon next. –james

Food was fresh tasty and plentiful ! The place is mainly a take out joint. However they were very friendly and accommodating. The soup was enough to feed three people. Sushi presentation as good ad it taste.

I wonder the reviews are here fake as I did not find this place worth of 4.5 rating. The service was friendly but the sushi I had was awful. The texture and temperature of the sushi rice were mushy and too warm. I might have made a wrong choice of a dish and might go back again but not any time soon.

One of the best sushi restaurants in the city and probably the best I have ever had so far. I had two different dishes, the Fried Beef Udon Soup and Tuna Roll(had the red one). The Field Beef Udon is pretty much a noodle soup dish with Udon(fish ball I have assumed to believe [please correct me if I’m wrong]) soaked in carrot soup. The broth is one of the best part of the soup, worth every drop. The Tuna Roll was prepared fresh with with avocado, who knew it tasted great with fish. Overall love the atmosphere and the folks that work there are very friendly.

Not much seating(6… maybe 8?) inside so most likely you’ll be using this place for take out or catering. The lunch special of a half udon order with an entrée hit the spot. Very fresh sashimi and a nice little shrimp dumpling as well. In order to try something different we shared the Yellowtail Basil roll which might have been too much food overall(that Udon really fills you up!). The roll with brown rice was not what I expected. Had a similar texture to some grain/veggie patties. If you’re on a health kick you should like it but those of you looking for a roll with more salty or savory flavors might find it lacking compared to your standard heavy sauced and season specialty roll. We were both trying to get back on the bandwagon after holiday feasting so it was just what the doctor ordered.

I came to this sushi restaurant as a recommendation by a buddy of mine. I expected this place to be a lot bigger than it is, but the place is nicely furnished and beautiful, despite the location and size. With only two tiny tables by the window in the corner to sit at, I got an assortment sushi since I wanted to get a variety of different seafood they use and get a taste test of what they had in store. I was very impressed by the variety of fish they use: salmon, different varieties of tuna one being red which I couldn’t figure out what it was, and squid. I could also be mixing up the fishes myself. My least favorite was the squid because it had to be tied with a seaweed and i’m not a huge fan of seaweed, usually have to be sandwiched in between stuff. I was still hungry so I got what was called the dragon, which is pretty much eel sushi roll. I was very impressed with how it tasted as the eel was cooked so it wasn’t completely raw, the avocado added an extra taste which complemented the rest of the sushi. Everything is made on the spot behind the counter so you know its fresh at a reasonable NYC price. I really hope they can find a better bigger location because they deserve better than that puny location they got right now hiding out of sight behind construction.

On a recent quick trip to New York, I found myself ravenously hungry and short on time to eat. Thanks to you Unilocalers, I found Oita, which is probably the size of my bedroom but has waaay better sushi(my bedroom has no sushi, though, so I guess it’s no competition). Having spent the whole day travelling, I was hungry enough to devour an entire Baja Fresh roll and a bowl of Oita udon, much to the waitress’s surprise. They were both delicious – the baja fresh roll was crunchy and fresh, with the kick of spice complimenting the flavor of the salmon. The oita udon was hearty, the broth wasn’t too salty, and the noodles were the perfect texture. Definitely not a place to go with more than two people, but it’s an awesome spot.

What an amazing find! My girlfriend and I stumbled on this small sushi joint and I’m so glad we did. They’re very reasonably priced and the sushi was great. Made fresh of course. Got the California roll, salmon avocado roll, and eel roll and it only ran me $ 21. The staff seemed friendly as well even though I was only taking out. Definitely looking forward to coming back many times whenever the craving for sushi kicks in.

Hands down, Oita Sushi is now officially my favorite sushi restaurant. It is in a class of its own and definitely is not your typical sushi restaurant. The rolls and sushi are fresh and unique. But Oita Sushi offers an extremely clean, refreshing twist on sushi, using only all natural, healthy ingredients. I was very impressed with this tiny gem in Manhattan. We went for lunch as a group of four. Everyone ordered the udon + signature roll oita combo. And we couldn’t pass up the triple ceviche. We were all extremely full after all that food! Starting with the udons: Both the curry and the regular udon were amazing in their own ways. The curry udon has this rich, delicious depth to it, while the regular udon is light yet hits the spot! The signature rolls: 1. Mommy Rose — The presentation of the roll was beautiful. Elegantly crafted, the Mommy Rose is a solid roll for those who love lots of sushi. 2. Baja Fresh — as the name says, this roll was very fresh and light. Loved the jalapeño as it gave the roll a slight kick. 3. Yellowtail Basil — My favorite of the 4 we tried. I loved the fact that this roll was made with black rice. This roll has tangy flavor without any heavy dressing or sauces. Loved that Oita used basil and mango in this roll! 4. Happy Salmon — This roll combined the creaminess of avocado and salmon with the sweetness of Asian pear and mango for a perfect balance of rich and sweet. I definitely recommend this cute and delicious sushi restaurant!

Excellent place and would recommend to anyone. Very nice staff, they had the best pickles. I also really enjoyed the miso soup. What really stood out to me was the fact that I asked for an alteration on my meal and the lady didn’t hesitate to meet my needs. Definitely coming back when next in NYC.

Why this is so highly rated I have no idea. Sushi was good, but not great, and way too expensive given the portion sizes. I wouldn’t recommend.

Seriously such a cute little place!!! I came here for dinner with my boyfriend on a cold fall night as we were craving some hot udon within walking distance from our apartment. We were lucky enough to get the last two seats in the restaurant, and we sat by the bar. The service was really good. The staff were attentive and friendly and made us feel welcome as soon as we stepped in. We both got the Oita Udon(he got the vegetarian bowl while I got the regular bowl). They were both delicious! I love that the broth was flavorful even though they don’t use MSG in their food. Also, the udon had a bit of a darker shade so I have a feeling they might use whole wheat udon. All in all, very healthy and tasty, perfect for a cold night! Take note that the restaurant itself is tiny. There are only 2 tables of 2, and 4 seats by the bar, so this wouldn’t be a place to go to if you have a larger group. They also don’t have restrooms so you’re probably meant to eat quick and go. If you’re interested in delivery, they deliver between 59th and 79th! Even though I just ate here yesterday, I already can’t wait to come back because I’ve got my eye on their curry udon and some of their other sushi rolls! Watch this space.

I’ve been spoiled with some damn good sushi lately, and Oita is no exception. They have some combinations that I have never come across before, including quinoa, basil, and mozzarella. The Mama Rose is a meal by itself. Don’t be a greedy pig like me, and order both a soup and four extra sushi pieces, because I feel like a giant rice brick has nestled down and made itself a permanent home in my stomach. The place seats two parties of two and 5 people around the bar. I appreciated how health-conscious the menu is: besides offering their own sodas, they have signature rolls for vegetarians and vegans that go beyond your standard cucumber roll. The menu also has soba and udon for those who hate sushi. When we finished eating and were getting ready to leave, the chef behind the counter smiled and asked how everything was. Everyone, even newbie customers like us, were greeted like regulars. I’m really happy that an awesome, reasonably-priced sushi joint opened just steps away from my front door. NEXTTIME: curry udon, shrimp tempura roll, eel roll.

One of the best places I have enjoyed sushi. The owners and staff do a wonderful job making the small restaurant feel intimate, welcoming everyone like a true house guest. The ingredients are all of genuine quality, from the vegetables to the sashimi. You can tell from the way the final product looks and tastes, as well as from the small postings on the store. The dishes end up being a beautiful, delicious palette. The lunch special is a bargain, with flexible options, for a place that also has very creative signature roles. I’ve never seen many of them before. I had the yellowtail basil which was certainly unique(the basil component is a strong). Can’t wait to return.

Very cute small store on the UES. Not a lot of seating, seems like people usually take the food to go. We ordered 2 bowls of udon, the Mama Rose, some meat sushi special, and eel roll for 3 people. My favorite was the eel — nothing special about the roll, but the eel flavoring was just very very good, reasonably priced as well(I think around 8 $?). The Mama Rose, the waitress said it was the owner’s favorite… was very fresh tasting, but I felt that they cut the fish too small. I’m used to thin fish that are cut long, but this was just thin and square/short? The meat sushi was decent(my fiancé actually ate some of this since he doesn’t like fish, and he was a fan). The udon was tasty. Left feeling full.

Adorable place. I was excited to find that there was a place called Oita Sushi in NYC, having visited Oita Prefecture earlier this year. Sadly, the owners and staff are Korean so I couldn’t reminisce, but this review is about the food and service, not the owner’s origins. The staff is super nice and helpful. The complimentary water is lemon flavored, which was a nice surprise, and cut nicely through the fat of the sashimi. The lunch special came with a half serving of udon, which was the highlight of the meal. The side salad and other extras that came with the meal were not memorable and the sashimi was not particularly well prepared or flavorful. I know I shouldn’t expect much from a takeout sushi place, but it’s clear the chef works hard at his job and it would be nice to see him do it with a finer cut of fish even if the prices went up a bit. The sashimi set, which promised 6 pieces, and yes, 6 were delivered, but it was only salmon and tuna, perhaps the two least interesting cuts of fish, though I suppose crowd favorites. I do want to go back and try the rolls. They looked really creative. Kampai!

We came here because it has five stars and I know why! The food is fresh and delicious. The Mama Rose roll is to. die. for.
