Olde Tyme Barbers

I’ve been a regular here for several months now. My man DJ does a fantastic job every time. He’s also super nice and friendly and will give you the 6 star service every time. Most of the other barbers are friendly as well and also look very experienced.

First time here, and Alex took great care of me. Shoe shine to boot – quick, friendly and very well done.

James has been giving me consistently excellent haircuts for over a year. Great barbershop with a solid crew of down to earth guys.

These guys are the best. I’ve been getting my hair cut by James for a little over a year now, and I wouldn’t go to any other place in NYC. James crushes a guy’s cut — he takes his time to make sure every detail is the way you want it, and not to mention is the man. The staff as a whole is great — really fun group that makes for an awesome experience every time you go to the shop. If you’re looking for a great cut for a bargain price, James and the crew at OTB are your guys.

I randomly stumbled upon this place and I couldn’t be happier that I did… James is a master with his scissors. He has been cutting my hair two years now and I can honestly say I have never left disappointed. Most importantly, he is CONSISTENT and ALWAYS makes sure your happy before getting out of his chair. I always recommend James to my co-​workers and clients alike. If your looking for a talented barber that actually listens to what you want and truly LOVES what he is doing, then James is absolutely the guy!

Consistency is the most important thing when trying to find a good barber and that’s exactly what you get with James. I’ve been coming to him for over 2 years now and haven’t had a bad haircut once. If you want a high quality haircut at an easy-​going barbershop then ask for James at Olde Tyme Barbers.

I had no appointment and heard a lot of good things. Wow! They were accommodating and signed John to me. Let me tell you, he was the man. It was a silent cut but you could tell he was concentrated on the hair. I told him about some of the problems with my head and he took care of me. I loved the cut and I live this place. Definitely would recommend this place for a cut.

Convenient location, was able to get a cut right away when I walked in at lunch time. Nice pictures on the wall giving it an authentic barber feel.

Amazing work Lawrence, I walked in at 8am waited a little bit, Law took care of me I was out by 9:15am cleaned my beard gave me massage/​lotion/​HOT & COLD towel was amazing. No frills, just old school place with classic barbers.

Been coming here for I think a year now, maybe more, but i pop in every 3.5−4.5 weeks for a cut. I usually always book with James but I have had others (Matt I believe — when James was on Vacation — how dare you have a personal life) fill in. Super satisfied every time I go. While more expensive than a typical «barber» the quality more than makes up for the difference.
Shop has a good vibe, ppl are friendly and happy… better vibe is usually after 5 though.
Going for my first shave today… ill follow up if it doesn’t go well but thats not going to happen. Definitely book an appointment though they get busy

Gotta see the Doctor (docta) when ur there. This place is probably the most authentic barber shop around that will still deliver a fashionable clean fade. Btw, the conversation is intense so be prepared to laugh your ass off! Thanks guys for a wonderful experience!

I’m sure they give good haircuts here, but they were extremely rude. I wanted a quick beard trim and asked how much they cost. The man who I’m assuming was the owner responded saying «$ 25 for a trim with the blade.» I asked if that was the price just for a trim, because it’s a high price. They’re in midtown so I’m sure they have high rent but still, the guy was very rude, repeating himself when I asked if that was really the price instead of just answering me. When I hesitated and thought about it he rudely said «so are you gonna take it or no?» I said I was thinking about it and he rudely said «well, take a card and make an appointment, can’t you see everyone here is busy??» No thanks, not taking a card.
I was born and raised in NY and definitely understand short and to the point personalities but this guy was rude and there are 1000’s of barbers in NY. No reason to go back here.

I went in to get an old school cut with a deep part line and the deep part was screwed up bad. I have to part my hair weird in order to cover it up. The rest of the cut was good but I wouldn’t go back.

So I went to the city to meet with the wife for lunch, had a great time, and needed a haircut badly, went into Olde Tyme and was pleasantly surprised by the vibe, I was greeted by Laurence, one of the barbers.
A few things I really liked:
He gave me an excellent consultation session without me asking. He gave me a few good tips about caring for my type of hair, and through the whole time remaining friendly, professional, and knowledgeable.
Love my cut! Now I have more reasons to come up to the city :)

Laurence is a terrific barber surgeon. I walked in, sat down. he didn’t use anesthetics, only his charm and his crafty scissors and other accessories as he performed the operation. probably the best haircut experience I’ve had in the last 20 years, maybe the best in the century.

Went in for a last minute cut. Girlfriend and mother — APPROVED!
It’s got a true barber vibe and you feel great walking out. It also happens to be very convenient for anyone near grand central.

I’ve been to Old Tyme Barbers several times. I’ve only had my hair cut by Szilvia and she is awesome.
I like my hair short on the sides and tapered in the back and she does it perfectly every time. She always finishes by shaving my neck with a blade and lining me up.
She uses a combo of scissors and clippers and does a great job. I highly recommend her and all the barbers in the place are cool and fun to talk to.

OTB keeps it real… If your an old time New Yorker at heart (U don’t have to be on in years to appreciate this establishment… just a New York aficionado) you will feel right at home. My technician, Laurence, was extremely outgoing friendly competent consummate hair cutting beard trimming professional !!!

Five stars for Fred and Matthew. I would follow either of them anywhere.
However, Matthew is leaving next month to open his own shop, and Fred has been on a break, and honestly I give zero stars to the shop owner. Seems he’s the one who wrote a message on their chalkboard yesterday along the lines of: «We are neutral on Bill Cosby, and opinionated on everything else.» I don’t really understand what is supposed to be clever or funny about tolerating sexual assault. The owner isn’t always there, but when he has been I’ve heard him make misogynist and transphobic comments, so this chalkboard was no surprise.
An old school barbershop can still be super charming without the old school bigotry.
