this place is awesome. just stopped by for the first time today. I dunno if they were running a single exhibit or just have random art pieces throughout, but I liked it. many kinds of contemporary art displayed here.

Love this place! … There, i said it. Stumbled in accidentally after a bleek opening of Pierre Matter’s Steampunk exhibit at the Animazing Gallery. Walking empty and depleted through the streets of Soho, my periferal eye-sight was caught by the absolutely awesome David Match’s Coat Hanger statue in their window. And what do you know, they have a large piece of Matter’s steampunk collection there too, however in the company of the fenomenal likes of Basquiat, Botero, Haring, Murakami and others. Will be back for more)

Opera gallery bemoans the problem with New York’s art scene: commercialism. Andy Warhol had a soul, just with a cunning dark side, but at least he had some philosophy, not to mention good drugs. This is the shopping mall of art galleries with illustrative, some good, and pop art from the likes of Ron English and Mr. Brain freeze. It’s like Targets super store art collection. Do yourself a favor and take the money you’d spend on art here and : 1. take a trip to India. 2. enroll in an art class at the New School and make your own Or both.

Opera Gallery is beautiful, quiet, and quaint. The staff was accommodating, and allowed you the freedom to explore. My brother, visiting from out of town, had desired to see Ron English’s Crucial Fiction. While not necessarily my style, the gallery had a multitude of different artists on display; enough to suit any tastes.

I stepped through Opera’s soho-classical sore front, and I dove into the swirling crush of John John Jesse’s pre-show party. His punk-fueled icons glowed on lacquered wood, and they glowered from their gilded frames, across a swath of heavy-lidded pilgrims. «Champaign? Don’t mind if i do…» John John’s portraits rubbed shoulders(and other bits) with Ron English’s titillating cowgirl portraits; inspired studies of celluloid. Downstairs, you can escape the dizzying crowds and enjoy your bubbly in a less frantic space. There, you might catch a textured displat from living artists… and not-so-living artisits. The work of Mr. Brainwash; as seen in Banksy’s digital tell-all, Exit Through the Gift Shop. Come for the art, stay for the sparkling drinks, and utterly forget yourself! Note: Don’t bring your groceries to the pre-show! I’d stopped by Dean and Deluca and the guy at the gallery door took a look at my bags and snapped, «This is a private party.» I adjusted my bags, and replied, «I know, i’m on John John’s list.».

Stumbled upon this gallery. Had some interesting contemporary artists featured. Unfortunately found the store manager(?) unhelpful. Wanted to know more about Mr. Brainwash and told me to look on the website.

Love stopping by Opera Gallery, especially to take a break from the crowds from Broadway and to take my mind off shopping(or the fact that I can’t afford all the things I want). Recently it seems like the gallery has been featuring a lot of pop and contemporary artists more than other genres. I’ve seen my share of Ron English, the London Police, Shepard Fairey and soon, Mr. Brainwash will be showing at the space. Initially, walking into the gallery might seem intimidating, but know that it’s open to the public and that anyone can walk in and check out the artwork on sale. That’s the point of galleries, if you’ve never been — try it out! Don’t forget to checkout the collections downstairs. Photos are allowed, but just to make sure, double check with the store managers.

What a refreshing gallery to walk into! It doesn’t have the stuck up, obnoxious feeling of other expensively rich galleries. No people following you around, making sure you don’t breathe too close to the artwork. I’ve never had so much fun looking at artwork before and found many pieces that I really enjoyed.

I randomly stumbled into this gallery one day, and was thrilled to find that Andre Monet was exhibiting at the time. =)
