It was your basic NYC pizza joint. It was also the first spot I ate at after getting off the plane when I moved to NYC and finding it via Unilocal. Thanks for the slices, Pizza Box!

The city just lost some flavor. I considered the Pizza Box the quintessential New York slice. «The box» was a no-frills ‘pizza place’ that pumped out the best of the best since 1957. The slice had a simple well-balanced sauce to cheese ratio with the right amount of crisp bottom crust. From the days of sneaking into the city to see bands in the village as a kid, to the dozen or so unofficial pizza tours I’ve given out of town friends later on, I knew I could always rely on the Pizza Box to deliver a delicious bite. These were the type of slices I was brought up on and I’m sad to see them go.

Very sad to see that the Pizza Box is no more. I never really came here until towards the end of college, but it was a solid option in the neighborhood and had been here since 1957. Nice patio in the back too. Best thing they had were their marinara slices, which were just tomatoes and some seasoning on a grandma slice. The regular slice, which a decent NY-style slice, paled in comparison. There was nothing bad here, but when you face competition from Joe’s, Fiore’s, and Artichoke Basile’s(mediocre but popular) within a few blocks, that’s tough to beat. I feel like this place could’ve done something to avoid this, but hindsight is 20⁄20. I wish the owners nothing but the best, and I hope the chain that replaces them burns down within the first year.

So I didn’t know the history of this place and just stumbled in to grab a bite. Quite possibly the most bland pizza I’ve ever had, but whatever they were open late. However, we saw a rat run through the restaurant from the back, across. I know it’s New York but inside the restaurant?!

I like the pizza at Pizza Box. There are a lot of pizza shops in that area but I like Pizza Box the best. They have specials the are inexpensive and all the food is fresh and hot. The staff are very friendly too! In the summer they have outdoor seating in the back that is very nice.

One of my friend’s parents grew up around this area and had fond memories of Pizza Box, mentioning that there was no better sicilian slice anywhere nearby. I was very excited to give the place a try a few days ago when I found myself in the general vicinity. Walking up to the place it looked as though this place had been here for years and the outdoor garden seating area was a very nice touch, especially on such a beautiful day. Unfortunately I was in a rush so my friend and I decided to eat inside. We each ordered two sicilian slices and were delighted to see that they were large and thick. The price was very reasonable, $ 2.50 a slice, which is around the average price of a regular slice at most other places(unfortunately). Service was fast enough though I don’t think we had the freshest of slices, but I could be wrong. Its also good to note that the place serves draft beer, which you won’t find at every pizzeria and those prices seem equally fair compared to the average bar. As our hot slices sizzled, I was eager to dig in, but my pleasure soon turned to confusion. The warm, bread had a nice body and flavor, in fact dare I say that it may have been a tad too much for a slice, but that was a highlight. Unfortunately the praise stops there. The amount of sauce and seasonings per slice were measly and had little to no taste. The cheese though gooey was flavorless too. This sicilian tasted like I ate a large piece of piping hot bread with some added chewy texture on top, not like pizza. Bland pizza sounds like two words that should never go together but I’ve experienced it a couple of times now. Far from the worst pizza I’ve had but if this is how the sicilian holds up, I don’t have high hopes for their other slices. When it comes to pizza, taste trumps all else and despite the numerous positives I ultimately left with very mixed feelings. Perhaps Pizza Box used to reign supreme on Bleecker but I think that day has passed. Still, for the price and size it may be enough to outweigh the negatives if you can sacrifice flavor.

Fairly solid pizza by the slice. The margherita was one of the best I’ve had in the city. The white pizza was good, but got a bit soggy on the bottom. The Sicilian was a bit bland. I love that they have draught beer! Good place to stop when strolling through the village.

Pretty average pizza counter joint but they have draft beer and a nice sized back patio, worth going for those two reasons alone.

While visiting NYC, my family and I walked all over the village trying to find a pizza place my parents had been to years ago the«had a nice back patio». They couldn’t remember the name or exactly where it was and after 15 minutes of wandering it seemed like a «wild pizza chase» but suddenly there is was! It was a nice back patio tucked amongst the tall buildings, spacious with seating for up to 36 people! And the pizza was excellent. My parents got the clasic greasy, floppy cheese piza of their youth, I got a fancier one with basil and medalions of fresh mozarella. My sister got a slice of spinach and cheese. All were fantastic. Reasonably clean restroom near the back of the store.

If you like pizza that tastes like it was in a cardboard box steaming for 20 min. then you will love this place. No one likes a soggy bottom of any kind.

Pizza Box is a solid New York slice, especially at 2AM. Beware, the place is crawling with obnoxiously drunk NYU students around this time, but you’ll still get a pretty big slice(none of that Artichoke faux-artisanal BS). I’d prefer them for $ 1 like Percy’s down the street, but beggars can’t be choosers.

They have outdoor seating and cheap(quality) pizza. Oh, and beer, too. That sounds like a recipe for success if you ask me. The pizza is crispy, saucy, good. As a man who’s not too big into cheese(I blame the lactose intolerance, it’s a real b-yotch) I always appreciate a cheese-less slice, which is one of their mainstays in fact. If you’re not weird like me, I’m sure you’ll find something you like. And for the price of a slice(it was $ 2 for mine, though I’m sure toppings will run you another buck or so), it’s a place worth stopping by in if you’re in the area.

Wish I could give it a 3.5. The pizza wasn’t bad but it wasn’t awesome either. Buffalo wings were wings that forgot their spicy clothes at home. They serve beer which IS awesome and it’s totally cold and delicious AND less than some bars/clubs. The owner is kinda quiet but observant. The guys working behind the counter are nice. Would I wander in here again after a night out? Yes. Just the sheer brilliance of the caliber of people that stroll in and out is worth it.

I don’t understand why everyone is hating on Pizza Box lately. I will give it 4 stars: 1.) It’s still my favorite slice of «regular» pizza. It’s not fancy, it’s tasty, a little greasy, thin crust, crispy, and cheap. 2.) They’re open late — 2am on the weekdays and 5am on weekends. 3.) They sell beer and fountain cherry coke. 4.) You can eat the pizza and drink the beer/cherry coke in the cute backyard. Why minus 1 star? I don’t know… I love it, but it isn’t quite pizza perfection. I’m still looking for that.

Mmm! I’m really partial to my neighbors, South Brooklyn Pizza but when I want thicker, heavier pizza I come here Most recently I had the buffalo chicken pizza. Soo good! A huge slice for $ 3.75 and loaded with yummy chicken. My husband loves the white pizza too. The guy was pretty nice, and the place is large enough that it wouldn’t be awkward to eat there.

People. Pizza is pizza. It’s not rocket science. Pizza Box is awesome for two sole reasons. They offer tasty, edible pizza. That’s right edible. I’m not saying the most delicious freaking pizza of New York. But its pizza. Plain and simple. And tasty. They have outdoor seating! This rocked during the summer when my friends and I would party in the area. Its so pretty and much nicer than staring at bad paintings of italy or headshots. I’m not sure how this outdoor thing fares in the winter, but enjoy while you still can. Bottom line is there are two kinds of pizzerias. The ones you go to to dissect every aspect of a pizza slice. And the kind you go to to be fed. Pizza Box = Mission Accomplished Fed. Full. Happy.

Telling someone that a pizza place is awesome will invariably set that person to search for faults with the place or tell you they know a better place. New Yorkers are quite picky about their favorite pizza as well. My review is based solely on the regular, plain slices, because that’s usually what I get. I love Pizza Box. The main reason is that it reminds me of my favorite pizza place as a kid, Villa Guadia in Astoria(which is now just called Gaudia). I lived pretty far from Villa Guadia and used to take a 40 minute bus trip to get there when I was younger. Now its nice to be reminded of this great pizza with Pizza Box. They also have a nice outdoor area to enjoy a slice and have some draft beer. I think it’s Coors Light, nothing special but good with pizza. If you’re looking for truffle oil infused organic pizza, this is not for you. If you want a good slice of pizza, go to Pizza Box.

Their grandma style slice was pretty mediocre. That’s a compliment, by the way. Their cheese slice was absolutely unbearable. I’m not kidding. If you told me that I had to either murder my entire family, or eat another cheese slice from Pizza Box, let’s just say that one side of the church would be pretty empty when I finally find that special someone. Don’t eat here. …and if you ever meet any of the people who gave positive reviews to this place, please punch them in the stomach. Are all of the people who reviewed this place from California, or some other place where they think CPK is decent pizza, and brag incessantly about how wonderful their Mexican food is?

Pizza Box isn’t breaking any new ground, nor will it be mistaken for a historical New York eatery, but what it is — is home to my favorite slice in the Village. I can’t be too sure of exactly what draws me here. I’ve been lucky enough to be devouring good pizza all my life, so The Box, again, is no revelation. But it’s cheap, satisfying, and probably most importantly, reliable. Chances are you’ve been scorned before by a pizzeria — be it they didn’t have the same toppings as last time, delivery took too long or never came, or worse, your slice just tasted different. Somehow, wrong. Well, Pizza Box always tastes right — as comforting and familiar as that Seinfeld re-run you’ve seen fifty times and will be sat through number fifty-one and counting. Don’t be alarmed by the rejected Bronx Zoo exhibit of a patio in the back — the one that perfectly recreates the natural habitat of Northeast wildlife. And by that, I mean squirrels and pigeons. They love it back there. Some people may shy away from scarfin’ down slices alongside our furred and feathered friends, but I find it endearing. There should really be designated, unorthodox places in the city where stressed-out New Yorkers can go to unwind for maybe, say, a lunch hour, and, I don’t know, pretend that they’ve gone crazy or something and can feel at peace with just looking at all the little animals and leaves on the trees. I mean, it’s not like I’ve done that or anything, but Pizza Box’s backyard could be on that list. I’m just sayin’.
