Ricco Maresca Gallery

I would love to say that I «know art», that I’m the kind of person who goes sees a piece, and can go on and on about the artist’ vision and how the work «talks» to me… But, I am not that person. Not by a long shot. But I did enjoy my experience at RMG and the artwork on display.
RMG shares space with another gallery so of course my girlfriends and I end up at the wrong exhibit. We eventually figured things out and found the location for RMG. It’s a decent sized gallery (but what do I know, I’m new to art galleries), with side rooms and cute nooks. And there was free wine. Good or bad (unless its really, really bad), I always enjoy free alcohol. The crowd was diverse; from hipsters, to «artistic» types, to the regular Joes like me. The gallery was showcasing work by Marcos Bontempo on the day I went. It was all things I assumed a showcase would be. The images were disturbing and made me uncomfortable. I could not wait to leave but yet, the paintings kept drawing me in. I even considered buying, until I saw the price tag. Maybe during my next visit (hopefully soon), there will be something that I like that is also within my budget.

Solid colletion of art, specifically the Doi collection that was on display during my visit. Staff could have been a little more friendly, IMO, but overall worth the visit.

A cutting edge gallery on 20^th st in Chelsea, Ricco Maresca Gallery has an eclectic collection of art, from untrained Outsiders to highly accomplished professionals. The work of Ben Hotchkiss stands out as unique and visionary, both his watercolors and oils transport the viewer to altered states of being. The street looks deceptively unimpressive, with parking garages and construction supply warehouses, but the north end of the Highline is accessible there, and there are some other good galleries further down the street toward 11^th ave.
