Roxy

Last night I went to a rollerskating birthday party at the Roxy. I paid $ 18 to get in, $ 5 for the ancient roller skates and had to give up my ID. I saved a buck or two by being ignored by the bartender. No drink for me, just a visit to the communal water pitcher, and it was hot in there. I was happy to re-​live my adolescent rollerskating memories but the floor was small and the skaters clumsy. I didn’t fall but I ran into several sweaty people. The music kinda sucked except for a couple early 80’s Madonna tunes, and those were only good because of the nostalgia factor. The ceiling was covered with valentine’s hearts even though valentines day was over. I hoped there would be a few more over enthused goofballs than there were. Just a few girls wearing terry cloth gym shorts and a middle aged guy with disco lights in his skate wheels.

5 stars for the memories of the late 90s when Madonna’s Ray of Light was out, Victor Calderone was her personal dj, the shit was packed with gorgeous, shirtless, muscle studs from the burgeoning new neighborhood as I danced and sweated with my sister in one room and my hot international, ripped boyfriend in another.
As for now, well the Roxy like many a gay partier doesn’t seem to have been able to hold it together to be reviewed well in the age of Unilocal.
Last night was fun, it wasn’t crammed to the gills like I remember and the music style was the same though with remixed works of dreamgirls.
There was Not wonton sexual activity going on in the corners of the club there was just making out.
I wouldn’t blame John Blair. I loved his gym in the mid 90s though its interesting to see none of his properties exist on the Chelsea landscape anymore.
Sadly, Big clubs are dying. The factors are many.
One, redevelopment in cities across the USA are going into the warehouse districts that once held worthless real estate and converting them for a tidy profit.
Two, big clubs were born of a different era and that era has passed.
Three, Crystal Meth has replaced Ecstasy as the drug of Choice these days meaning instead of wanting to touch people and shake to the rhythm your left shaking in your bedroom as anonymous strangers pass in and out as your serostatus changes and your life falls apart.
Four, the internet has taken away the customer going to clubs solely looking to hook up.
And I am sure there is a 5 and 6 but rather than think on that, I’ll use what’s left of my brain not destroyed by the serotonin depletion of the 90s to reflect on the good times.
John Blair, thank you for the music.

How can I put this gently? Umm, The Roxy is a sad shadow of what nightlife was. Saturdays, headlined by Grandpa John Blair, is packed with annoying tourists, obnoxious old men, and underage hookers that keep the place lively. Oh, when I say «packed» it’s only an expression. The party could have been saved, but alas old man John did not create anything, except take the list that was left by one of the greatest circuit party promoters who ever lived. When he died of AIDS, Mr. Blair took what he had created and ran with it. John Blair has yet to improve the model, or add anything creative. This is because he is talent-​less, and couldn’t even run a lemonade stand. The proof is in the pudding, his parties are dieing faster than the crowds who once attended them. Oh, and he has resorted to pyramid schemes, involving himself in «Market America», the equivalent of Amway. If you visit his website he has no parties going on, because most clubs, even the Roxy have grown tired of not making any money off his pathetic parties. He is in tight with the owner, so maybe if he begs on his knees, which he has done before, he will be allowed to throw his little Saturday party until they turn The Roxy into a luxury high-​rise. (The Roxy is slated for demolition in mid 2007)

I had the unpleasant distinction of paying full price on a Saturday night for admission — $ 30 to be very disappointed. Plus there was some really rank oders coming off the skin of some of the guys. I don’t mind shirtless men dancing, but I just wish their chemicals wouldn’t be so distracting.
I did appreciate the large number of couches to sit on, so that you had a place to go other than the bar.

Um, I hate to sound like a bitch, but the 90’s called, and they really need their gay dance palace back. I am SO over The Roxy. I’ll give it props for still managing to pack ‘em in every saturday night, but it seems to me like the music downstairs hasn’t really evolved since 1995 and that the crowd is definitely not worth paying the $ 20 cover for. If you take a closer look at all these «hot, gorgeous, shirtless» men, you’ll realize that they’re all 45 and actually not attractive at all, and most of them are from out of the country. I agree with Jase that if you must go, stay upstairs where the good music is. Like most places, if you just go with your friends to dance an have a good time, it can be fun.

Every Wednesday night is booze and roller skating… who would have thought the two would mix so well?

Roxy. Saturday Night. Gay. Gay. Gay.
This is the place to be on a Saturday Night in New York City if you want to dance the night away with the hottest, shirtless (and sometimes pantless) gay guys around.
House music on the main floor, but I prefer the sweaty «hot box» of the upper VIP area that plays a mix of hip-​hop, pop, 80s, and 90s. Just remember to dress (less) to impress and bring a bottle of Purell. (not as lube, silly!)
Girls be prepared to get ignored by hot guys!

this is a great place of youre a raver, but my glow stick days are over… its bumpin though on a holiday like halloween or new years because the scene is totally different from the usual crowd…
but i usually like to dance for free with more diverse music…

Saturday Night at the ROXY is Gay Men Night with the occasional girl, like myself, thrown in. My guy friends took me and another female friend there to party. I was in shirtless men heaven. Ok, so none of them were interested in me, but I didn’t care, I just wanted to look and «accidentally» touch some hot, hard bodies. The men in this club were so HOT!!! So built, so…(whew, cold shower)
I had so much fun at this club because for once, I was able to dance without men coming up behind me and trying to dance on my ass (not a cool move, guys, not all girls enjoy that). But ladies if you do go to this club, beware that there are some straight men that go there for the girls they know hang out there. One approached me and this big, muscular guy stepped between him and myself. He later told me what he did and told me not to worry, to go back to dancing and enjoying myself and he’ll keep an eye out for me. How freaking great was that!!!
All in all the night was great. Girls if you want a night to just hang out with hot men, don’t be offended if they’re not into you :), the ROXY on Saturday night is the place to be.
