Ruby & Jack’s Doggy Shack

We love our friends at Ruby & Jack’s and there’s no other group we would trust to care for our dogs. They take the time to get to know you and your dog, and provide personalized service in a way that will make you loyal forever.

My favorite daycare. There is plenty of staff to ensure each dog is doing great. They’re super organized and can handle special dinner requests, special times to let the dog out into the backyard. Also, I love that I can see the dogs playing from the outside. It’s not in some mysterious backroom/​downstairs like I’ve been pretty used to seeing.

Dog grooming is noooot cheap in the city, and Ruby & Jack’s is no exception to that.
However, they provide great service to justify the price. Every time I have called to book or reschedule an appointment, the women answering the phone have been very pleasant to speak with and helpful.
My dog looks great after her grooming every time, and I know they treat her well. She’s super finnicky and hates being away from me so she freaks out when I drop her off, but by the time I come back to pick her up, she basically begs me to stay.
Will be back again once it gets warmer and it’s time for a new hairdo!

I could list all the things I love about Ruby & Jack’s, but the best «review» possible is the fact that my puppy loves it so much that he practically leaps out of my arms the second we walk through the door! He can’t wait to say hi to all his friends at the front desk, and he’s literally wiggling with happiness the minute we get there. Everyone that works here is so friendly and they seem to truly love the dogs. A couple of times my pup has been the last dog there, and when I arrived to pick him up the staff were playing games with him or holding him :) And the fact that they’re open till 9pm (later than a lot of other doggie places) is great for someone like me with an odd schedule.
The facility is also very clean and bright, which is nice. I stay for a few minutes after I drop off my dog to watch him play, and it always looks like the dogs are having a great time. There’s always at least one person in the room with the dogs at all times, and as far as I’ve seen they respond very quickly (but also gently) if a dog is playing too rough, seems anxious, humps, etc. I feel really confident leaving my pup with them at this point-​I know he’s in great hands, and he’s so much happier than if I were to leave him at home by himself for hours with nothing to do. They offer a free trial day for new customers (I was pleasantly surprised the first time I showed up and found that out), so it’s easy to check it out and find out if it’s the right fit for you and your dog.
I’ve also used their grooming services, and I was really happy with the results. Poms aren’t always the easiest to groom so I was glad when I got him back after his first cut and I saw that he hadn’t been clipped too short like some places do.

Just wanted to sing more praise for the groomers at Ruby & Jack’s Doggy Shack. My dog always looks wonderful after Kent or Victoria work their magic – they are the best!

Great place. I felt real good about leaving my dog here. It has video surveillance of the dog play area and if you pre book a camera pointed at there private sleep area. Monitored ²⁴⁄₇ by staff. The staff was extremely helpful even gave me a tour of the whole facility. Also they have a great pick up and drop off service for any weather as it is done in a car. Would definitely recommend.

Ruby and Jack’s is absolutely fabulous. As someone who works in the veterinary field, I am very particular about who I entrust to take care of my dog. I have the utmost faith in Ruby and Jack’s. They take time to get to know each of their day care participants and make sure they are placed in the appropriate play group — even if their «size» differs. They also have incredible sanitation and are quick to call if there is ever a concern with your dog. These guys are the best and truly care for your dog as your own.

I’d like to start out by saying that I dropped off my dog for grooming at Ruby & Jack’s and everything was fine. This time however I boarded my dog there for July 4^th weekend. I always board her at East Side Animal Hospital but unfortunately they were fully booked. In a nutshell my dog stayed there 48 hours and came home vomiting and with diarrhea; she wasn’t feeling well for 3 days after. Moreover, they charged $ 215 for 48 hours that she was there and that charge included a separate charge for the food. At East Side Animal Hospital I pay $ 35 per day and food is included. Bottomline – never again.

Never have I been wanting to give a place a 6 star review until these guys. I mean just perfect review across the board. Let me explain.
Now we have been ordering treats from these guys for quite some time and we have a pretty large customer base and even with all the diversity the bulk of all the dogs that came into our shop love the treats we buy from them. Their prices aren’t that bad, they have an AMAZING staff and to top it all off I have a story to share…
While working close by a homeless dog was running across the street and we took him in and began the search for his home. We reached out to this place for advice, seriously JUST advice and they supplied us dog food, a dog crate, toys and food and water bowl. Seriously the nicest guy ever and he helped out with checking the dog and giving us complete assistance. Overall the dog is happy now and he got adopted but wow… what an example of human kindness. Keep it up guys!

We’ve been taking our two rescue dogs here almost since the place opened. We’d tried the other Doggy Daycare’s in the neighborhood and had some issues with all of them so we were so happy we found Ruby and Jacks. When we pick them up they don’t smell horrible like they used to at the other places (apparently R&J’s has an air filtration system that works really well so it doesn’t smell bad in there). One of our rescues is a bit shy and the other a bit overly excitable (plays rough) so we were concerned how they would fit in with the group of large dogs in their big dog space. The staff keeps a close eye on them and when they feel like our dogs are getting too tired (and when dogs get tired is when accidents happen) they just take them out of the play room and put them in a smaller private room to chill for a bit. Not only do our dogs, I’m sure, appreciate the break but I imagine the other dogs appreciate it too! ;)
R&J’s doesn’t allow tennis balls and chew toys which I think is smart. It was explained that dogs tend to get territorial over toys and that turns into aggression. So they eliminate anything that might set a dog off during the day and they just end up playing together anyway. The dogs are ALWAYS supervised by at least one person but usually I see more than one person in the room when I check in on the web cam.
They give us a quick report on how they were when we pick them up which helps because it kind of helps us keep track of their behavioral patterns
We’ve also used R&J’s for boarding. They stay in a private room overnight (if we plan ahead sometimes we can get one of the rooms with a webcam in it which is always fun). They don’t do communal overnight with a whole room of dogs because, as they explain, it doesn’t make for a restful nights sleep for a dog and then they’re tired the next day and, as explained above, tired dogs begin to get cranky and cranky dogs can create hostile situations amongst their other doggie friends.
I love this place. I love the staff who are always so happy to see my dogs. And I feel safe leaving them here when I go out of town knowing they’re taken very good care of.

The people here are wonderful and very patient. My dog is a bit of a nervous wreck in new situations and had never been to daycare before. The first time she didn’t interact with the other dogs and just stood at the window. They encouraged me to keep trying and every time she has gone there she has done better and better. The staff are skilled at handling challenging dogs and give good feedback. They are also prompt with seeking medical care when needed… I work as a vet at a neighboring hospital and they have brought dogs in right away if anything needs attention. Highly recommend them!

I’m their newest fan! Our dog stayed there to try their daycare services yesterday and he was so into it that when my husband went to pick him up, he was basically ignored hahaha
The staff is very nice and friendly, the dogs are kept in a big room with someone supervising them all the time (dream job!) and they seem to be very responsible and caring with all doggies. I’m definitely coming back for more!

I used them several times for Dogwalking. In the beginning, they were so nice. Had the interview, two people showed up. Showed them the routine, etc. Then, I made the mistake to schedule them for a holiday. They sent a a very sweet troublemaker, who reported my dog was trying to bite her. Reviewed the video, and found that she didn’t follow any of the directions from the interview, and had chased the dog under chairs and a table to try and put on the wrong coat!!!
I came in between and had no idea what happened or why my place looked like it did, got the dog dressed and left.
The other owner called to yell at me when I was at the pharmacy, claimed he needed to charge more (he did, what could I do?), and that she was running late for the other people.
When I tried to straighten out what I found on the surveillance video, the other owner told me that he didn’t believe me. He turned around and raised their prices to the same as biscuits and bath, then demanded they couldn’t work until they had a detailed description of what needed to be done.
Then, I was told that they just opened and didn’t hire enough dog walkers to take my dog, sorry.
Never heard back from anyone.
Guess it is haphazard. Stay away from Aaron!

I’m so grateful I found this place. We’ve been bringing our dog here since the start of fall. At first we brought him to day care just a few days a week. Now he’s there every day. He loves spending his day playing with other dogs. We’ve also boarded him here several times and he does well.
I really trust the people that work and run the place. One of the owners is always there morning and evening when I bring or pick up my dog. They have a puppy cam so you can watch your pet while they are there — also shows they are very transparent.
After we left him in boarding for a week (longest we’ve ever left him), I was worried he wouldn’t want to go back for day care — but as soon as we were close to Ruby & Jack’s — he started running and could not wait to get inside.
I can’t understand why anyone would write negative reviews on here — they are one of the best dog care places in Manhattan.

your dog is in such loving hands here. everyone i’ve encountered is wonderful and puts your mind at ease immediately. it must be one of the top doggy daycares in the city. i look forward to more visits in the future.

I would never send my dog here again. For many reasons, but among them is that this is not a transparent pet service company. They are not up front about the details of what goes on under their care, and when pressed for more information they become defensive and try to cloud the facts of the situation.
But most importantly, during his brief stay at Ruby & Jack’s, my dog’s life was endangered in at least two occasions:
1. He was attacked on the playfield, and none of the staff noticed or intervened until his collar had been completely chewed off by another dog. I was not called when this happened. I had to call R&J the next day to ask where his collar was. It was only then that they were able to piece together their story. During the attack, my dog’s MicroChip ID tag was detached from the collar. When I went to pick it up, it was on the front desk in a paper clip drawer. They would have completely lost it if I hadn’t asked. They say this is because the MicroChip had no identification. But then I ask, how many dogs lost their microchip that day due to a collar incident? If mine was the only dog who had his collar chewed off on the play field that day, wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that the microchip belonged with his collar?
Of course, the details of the incident are cloudy because Ruby & Jacks refuse to show me the surveilliance tape. I have to ask, why would a kennel ever want to be anything less than 100% transparent?
2. When they transported by dog home in the van, he was not wearing his collar. They forgot to put it back on him. This means that my dog was in a van without his NYC ID, his Rabies ID, my contact information, or his microchip tag. What if something awful had happened and he’d gotten loose? He would have had no ID, and we would have lost him.
Bottom line, the staff here is incompetent, unkind, and un-​empathetic. When I aired these complaints, I was told that I wasn’t a good fit to come back to R&J (as if I ever would want to!) because my «standards were too high.» If you are like me and have high standards for your dog’s overnight care, DO NOT send your dog to Ruby & Jacks!!!

Anyone who has read my numerous reviews knows that when it comes to my baby Bella, I am one of those crazy pet-​parents and my reviews can be brutal.
I just picked Bella up from Ruby & Jack’s Dog Shack and yes, I am giving them 5 stars!
I stumbled upon Ruby & Jack’s while taking a walk and made a mental note to pay them a visit. I was greeted by Victoria who gave me a thorough tour. First, it was spotless and smelled clean — not an easy task for a dog boarding facility She answered my numerous questions and was sweet, professional and patient — and I am not an easy customer!
We signed Bella up for two nights of boarding. I was thrilled that I was able to set up her private corral exactly how I wanted it. Secondly, I was able to log-​on and watch Bella while she played which was a HUGH plus for a neurotic mommy like me. I called them numerous times just to «check in» and everyone who answered the phone was professional and patient while I gave them the third degree :)
I picked up Bella this morning and she actually smelled clean as well — no stinky «dog boarding smell.» She seemed sad to leave, and mommy knew she was well taken care of.
While I am sure this was a busy holiday weekend, Bella wasn’t crammed into a small space with a million other dogs. They are extremely transparent with all their info, and I feel confident that they will continue to provide a clean, safe and very friendly environment. Thanks to the entire team at Ruby and Jack’s!

I have been bringing my mini-​dachshund to Ruby and Jack’s for 7 months and could not be happier with the level of service here.
The facilities are always clean. From the day we first walked in they were ready to give us a tour of the facilities, no ‘Give us 5 minutes and we’ll get started.’ They showed us every inch of the facilities and answered every question we have. They also give all clients their web cam address so they can check in on their little ones day and night.
But as nice as Ruby and Jack’s looks, what sets it apart are the people. Everyone — Aaron, Mike, Craig, Melissa, Sara and more — these are just great people who care about your animals. They take as good of care of my dog as I do, and that’s saying something. I trust them implicitly and the way my dog responds to seeing them proves how happy she is there.
I can’t say enough good things about Ruby and Jack’s. I love them!

I have good things and not so good things to say about this place. Maybe my expectations were too high since the reviews were great and was recommended by the pet store I purchased my dog from.
To cut to the chase, the groomer that took my dog was very sweet and seemed to love and care for dogs, however she was very young and not so skillful. Certainly not a 5 star. My dog basically looked better before the grooming.
Also they recommended dog clothes that was ridiculously small. I was very eager to get him a warm coat and took their advice when they said it was the perfect size. But when I put it on a couple days later, my dog couldn’t even walk with it zipped up. It was actually really funny.
I basically blame myself for not knowing any better, but it feels like they knew I was a newcomer and treated me that way. Will not be going back there again.

A happy place. That’s all there is to say. I had to do laundry at that UTTER DUMP with tiny old washers but big dryers – 4 a load to wash, 2 a load to dry – and there’s no bathroom. Wandered in, bought Christmas presents. Chatted with one of the owners.
I LOVE everything about this store. If I lived here full-​time, I would want a part-​time job. I’d take minimum wage.
They sell some beautiful cards, mugs, collars, doggie coats/​sweaters (bomber jacket!) as well as high end food. There is some fresh food as well, saves for 2 weeks sealed in a bag while sealed.
Also some nutritional ways to chill out a hyper dog. I know a SUPER hyper crazy dog – chihuahua and Schnauzer. Why ANYONE would combine that is beyond me.
But they only had the big size.
This is just the happiest vibe you can imagine.
