I’ve only ordered lunch here when they did lunch. Soley because I was hardcore craving meintaiko(spicy cod roe) pasta. The first time I had ordered the pasta was a bit too creamy for me but I still enjoyed the saltiness of the mentaiko. Mmmm The next & last time I ordered, I asked for no cream(I read some reviews it’s better this way)… I didn’t love it. The spice they used overpowered the meal and now the mentaiko’s saltiness was overbearing. I wanted to order it a third time, but they no longer offered lunch or delivery or both. I wish more japanese places offered this dish. I really really want to find a place with realllllly good mentaiko pasta… :( I hope one day I can come by and dine in, I want to try some other dishes here!

I came in here randomly because my friend was craving crêpe cakes at midnight and Lady M was closed… Such a good find! We ended up getting much more than just their green tea cupcakes — because their menu was tempting us with variety of Japanese bar food. We had their salmon sashimi, seaweed salad, and a uni rice dish(forget the name!). The sashimi was fresh and tasted great. The uni rice dish was served in a broth with egg and scallions — also great but I think I prefer the regular rice bowls without the soup. One thing that made me laugh real hard on their menu: pizza tempura! Whhhhaaaaa??? Lol. Yes. They have fried pizza if you ever want to give yourself a heart attack. Hahaha! It was really late at night and we were getting food after having already eaten dinner so we stayed away from ordering it, but I will have to try it one day after not eating anything for the whole day! Lol. May be I’ll browse through the reviews to see if anyone has tried it!!!

I would say the food is just average, especially for the price. And place is super packed — we came in at 1:30am and still waited for 20−30min(OK I understand it’s New York). Lots of sake and beer on the menu and this is the best part. Sea urchin(uni) — I’m a uni lover and I wouldn’t say this is a good place to order uni… Various grilled skewers — not bad, average Ochazuke(Tea rice) — didn’t like it. the rice was too hard and didn’t get much flavor from the soup. Mentaiko(fish roe) fried rice — the best dish of the day. worth a try. Grilled eel over rice — worth a try. above average. Yellowtail collar — very dry. don’t recommend. Cod collar — flavorful! Braised pork belly — the meat was dry, not soft enough. don’t recommend.

When in NYC, you have to eat late night snacks. I found out about this on Unilocal, and dragged my hubby there. The place was packed on a Thursday night at 11:00pm, that’s how you know it’s good, lol We ordered a bunch of skewers and the frog leg, everything tasted soooo good! I wish there’s a place like this in ATL

This place is in the Venus Fly Trap for Tourists in the Theater District, and it’s the only way to explain the 4-star average. It’s just not good. For starters, I could tell the shumai and gyoza dumplings were straight from the frozen food section because I’ve eaten the exact ones I tasted. The same goes for the pork ramen, which came out 20 minutes after everything else and again tasted SFTP(Straight From the Pouch). Service is truly lackluster. Be prepared to do a lot of hailing for everything except the bill, which arrives at the speed of light.

I don’t mind getting a little tongue in cheek … as long as it is tender thin beef tongue in my cheeks … dancing past my lips and taste buds.
The first slip of the tongue at Sake Bar Hagi was love at first bite. The second order of thinly sliced Gyutan 牛タン confirmed this was true love while the third order of $ 7.50 thinly-sliced tender beef tongue means I love moo way too much. So, loosen up with a pitcher of Sapporo Beer, a bottle of Sake, or both. Then get tongue tied with as many orders of the thin tender Gyutan Beef Tongue as your own tongue desires. Mix in some skewers of Yakitori and Kushiyaki. My recommendations at Saki Bar Hagi include: * Tori Chicken Meatballs $ 2.00 This underground bar is small, crowded, loud, and funky. I enjoyed it, but it was the first time Sake Bar Hagi slipped me the tongue … beef tongue … that I fell in love. It’s called Gyutan 牛タン in Japan and it’s called tender and terrific in Sake Bar Hagi.

There was a long wait(about 45 minutes), with only 2 – 4 seats available if you choose to wait by the host, down the narrow stairs. Once we got in, I was pleased with the menu. It had a great assortment of dishes(mostly Japanese and Korean) and even larger assortment of drinks. We decided to order the katsu-don, steak with white rice and bean sprouts, Fiji Apple wine, Yuzu sake, Plum beer, Melon spiked milk drink(tasted like cough syrup) and sour plum drink. The food was filling and delicious. The appetizer we ordered earlier was sashimi and it was super fresh. For dessert, we had the Milli green tea cake which was very thick but pairs well with a milk-based drink. The waiters are friendly and checked on us from time to time. They generously refilled our water glasses and would ask us for any additional drinks or refills. No strong complaints, since everything ran smoothly and the food/drinks were just great.

Fan, definitely a fan! Best dish is a tie between grilled saba and mentaiko pasta. Item I will not order again is mentaiko fried rice. Skip the yakitori sets, get a-la-carte and start with the beef but don’t forget to order the Japanese pepper!

Hagi is an excellent izakaya. Good drinks and typical Japanese bar food choices. The menu is quite vast and encompassing, so you’ll definitely be able to find something you’ll enjoy eating. The yakitori are generally good options. Go for an early dinner, or lines may form.

If you’re looking for a light dinner, this is not the best choice. If you’re looking for good bar food, this is a decent choice. Space — You have to go down a flight of stairs to reach the restaurant. The basement level location may be why ventilation was poor because my pores were definitely clogging up. Sea Urchin — This was my first time eating sea urchin and it reminded me of oysters. I liked it, but its creamy texture is not for everyone. Takoyaki — The octopus in the center was cooked nicely, but the batter on the outside was softer than I would’ve liked it and could’ve had more flavor. Japanese Seafood Pancake — Yum! Great crisp on the outside, and the seafood was fresh. Downside was that it was drowning in mayonnaise.

On a Wednesday night, this place is still packed with people. You can’t make reservations so we just walked in at around 8:30. Only spots open at this point was the bar. Already hangry we opted to sit there. Like every izakaya, sake bar hagi had tons stuff on their menu. Some are tailored towards Americans, such as the pizza tempura which completely mimics its name. Yep, I got marketed and went for it, wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be. It tasted like a deep fried pizza, but the batter was soggy. Wasabi tako — pretty average. Omusoba — it’s like omurice(omelette rice) but with soba instead. This sounded unique to me so I went for it. Again not too impressed, the Yakisoba was too salty and the omelette to soba ratio was very off. For dessert we got the red bean fish cake with sesame ice cream. The ice cream was the best part. I’d definitely want to come back and try their more traditional dishes, so will update my review again when that time comes.

What’s the hype about? Arrived at 530 when they opened at 5 and it was already a 20 – 30 min wait. Food was mediocre. I’ve def had better Japanese food. The price was decent at least. Service subpar. If there’s a wait, don’t wait.

Gluten-Free Review Wanted to find a place on our first night in NYC and decided to check out spots that one of my favorite travel shows«Anthony Bourdain» has visited and he has came here and decided this would be the place, especially since they were open till like midnight. Being from Texas the entire foodie feel of this place was epic, walking down the stairs to the abyss of culinary genius of master sushi chefs and sake everywhere was an awesome first impression. Ordered a bottle of sake which was real dry and our fault for not knowing enough but none the less wasn’t to bad. I also informed him of my gluten allergies and he acknowledged I think, without speaking English it’s really hard to tell whether they understand you or not. The menu is HUGE overwhelming in fact it’s hard to pick especially being gluten free, so after 20 minutes I told him this that this that check with chef and apparently they do not carry gluten-free soy sauce which is a sham for being such a big city it’s pathetic. I also couldn’t order any skewers, most of the sushi that had been soy glazed so I ended up getting a bowl of garlic rice. It was good none the less and the lady enjoyed her skewers. I just wish places like this would get on board and carry gluten-free soy sauce, it’s not hard to keep one bottle in stock for a patron such as myself, also to make anything the same just use the GF sauce instead… I’m not looking for a major change here. It would be 5 stars if they caried it, but maybe next time. Otherwise I’d probably never come back, nor recommend to any of my glutenator Unilocal friends. However, if your not allergic to wheat then this place is probably an epic dream paradise, it’s pretty awesome.

I had the winter special eel rice, and indeed it was a hearty heart warming meal for winter! I feel stuffed at the end of the meal and unable to finish all the rice. The eel rice dish has plenty of eel in it – two layers, one for you to eat with the sauced rice plain, and a second layer of eel to eat with pickles with or drizzle in all the seaweed flavoring, lastly pour in tea, here you have 3 ways to enjoy the meal. The service was meh, the place is packed and we didn’t see the server during most of our meal time, we wanted to add in appetizer squid but never get to talk to the server after the initial order. The tables are cramped, there’s very little space in between different tables, but it’s okay for a drink/food to go with beer kind place. The foot thing is the light is not dim in this place like most izakaya places, I’d like to see what’s in my plate please. e

Great Izakaya place right in the middle of NYC. Place is always packed that requires 20+ wait time to be seated. You can simply put your name and phone number then have some hike around time square until you get called. I go to Hagi at least 1 or 2 time per month as they are located not too far from my house. I usually get similar foods no matter which Izakaya place I go but there are few of dishes that I believe this place is the best. Wasabu Octopus/Takowasa — I think they have really fresh takowasa compared to other locations. Just be aware that portion is very small. May be smaller than others. Tonkotsu Ramen — Except the ramen places, they have really nice quality ramen compare to other places. Noodl Bonito Sashimi — Seared bonito slices with grilled garlic. Together, it makes really nice balance and combination. One of my favorite dish. Deep fried eggplant — I am no eggplant fan but I can enjoy this dish. It’s kinda sweet but not overpowered when it melts in your mouth. Can be recommended to both people who love eggplant or not! Shisito pepper — You know I think it’s little hard to call Hagi as best yakitori place but this place does have best shisito peppers. Make sure to get one if you love peppers. They give you nice burnt, fresh, big peppers. Mentai Pasta — Could be debatable if I call it as the best. I really like their pasta compare to others thou. Don’f forget to tell them make it creamier if you like creamy pasta. I believe there must be more to enjoy– In general, their foods are good. It feels great to have this place around where you live.

I have not been to Japan yet but this is exactly how I expect a Japanese izakaya to be like. I love small plate places where you can eat so many types of food and experience it all with friends. This place is right in the theatre district in the basement. It is tight and noisy but that adds to the character. Every dish we ate was better than the next but here are the highlights– field balls with octopus(my #1), yakatori– do the combo plate to try them all, noodles with kimchi sauce in an omelette, teriyaki octopus, and monk fish liver. They have sushi dishes that are probably great but we did not try any this time. Japanese beer on tap and big sake selection is great. This is exactly what I love to eat and experience with friends. It’s also very inviting to have such a place in this tourist area so you can skip all the generic places.

First visit — 2011; Second visit — 2016 Still good. Outstanding. Took a few folks here and we ate everything. I would recommend the following. Soft Shell Shrimp — Lightly fried, sea salted. Curry Meat Balls — Fantastic. Meaty goodness and fragrant Japanese curry flavors. Agedashi Tofu — Soul food Chicken Kaarage — Japanese fried chicken done perfectly Like 5 years ago, the place is packed. Be prepared to wait. Service is so-so. The servers can be short with you.

Sea urchin sashimi-delicious. Heavenly uni with its natural sweetness and smooth and creamy texture. Refreshing raw daikon slices. Aburi-Shimesaba-delicious. Well marinated fresh saba gets along so well with mashed ginger and scallions. A little salty. Takoyaki-average. Extremely thin slices of bonito flakes dancing on top of the tako balls. Hard texture of tako. A little bland without the sauce. Kushi Mori A set-average. Well grilled fresh shishito pepper covered in a thin layer of oil. Average quality of tori. Dry bara. Tsukune tastes nothing like chicken. Tender washu beef. A little over-grilled. Takana fried rice-delicious. A lot of takana pickles. Good quality of rice. Chewy and moist without being sticky. Pretty fatty pork slices. All the ingredients are well balanced in texture and flavor. Super flavorful.

I wasn’t aware this place was so popular. Mr. Joy and I wandered in here on Thanksgiving. Not only were they open, but it was bustling. Luckily we only waited a few minutes for a table. We ordered … Sour Yuzu Sake: tastes like a sweet & sour soda. Age Takoyaki:($ 6.50) has the familiar octopus filling with a crunchy exterior. Kushi Mori A set($ 12) — Shishito peppers, pork belly, chicken, Washu beef, chicken meatballs. We also added chicken skin($ 2.50) and duck($ 4). The pork belly was fatty and delicious and the chicken skin fatty and crunchy. The rest were not bad. Mentai Pasta($ 9.50) — spaghetti with spicy cod fish roe: This was my first time trying this particular noodle dish. Everyone seems to rave about this dish and I do not disagree with consensus. The cod roe gives a bit of a tangy flavor and is only slightly spicy, while the rich and creamy taste quells the fire. It all meshes well into very satisfying bites. The restaurant was pretty cramped, but the food was good.

Fantastic, underground(literally) find that reminds me of the izakayas in Tokyo. Came in a touch before 6:00 and were seated immediately. Note that by 7:00 there wasn’t an open seat in the house. We ordered a nice mess of goodies: Sautéed squid — tasty squid, good enough to order again. Wasabi shumai — nose clearing spice with enough porky flavor to slightly tame the heat. Soft shell whole fried shrimp — a must get, if they have it. Same concept as soft shell crab; just dig it shell and all, and suck the brains out when you are done. Sautéed pork belly with garlic sprouts — get this. No wait. Get two orders of this. This was amazing. Hard to describe really, but the flavors are spot on. Yakitori(chicken skins, chicken meatballs, chicken thighs, and shishito peppers — all solid staples as good as you should hope to find at an izakaya vs a yakitori restaurant. Spicy cod roe rice — this was ok. Basically a white rice spiked with seafood flavor from the spicy cod. No need to get this one. All of the above plus 4 beers, a small sake, and two glasses of negori sake to finish the night came out to roughly $ 100 before tip. Great value for a great meal.

Surprised the place was still bustling at 11:30pm on a Monday night. Guess it shouldn’t be much of a shocker since it’s located in prime tourist area(yes, I’m one of them). Luckily, we didn’t have to wait for a table. Since, it’s a late night snack for us, we didn’t go all out. Skewers: We’d ordered a couple skewers each. Hubby went with lamb and duck. I went with chicken meatballs and grilled chicken. My hubby liked his skewers As for mine, the chicken was rather bland(could have used a bit more seasoning) and the chicken meatballs was a tad bit mushy for me. Other items: Uni sashimi — wasn’t really fresh, there were some dried up corners(eeks) Fried chicken gizzards — an abundance of deliciously fried chicken gizzard morsels Japanese seafood pancake — like a deconstructed takoyaki ball — similar texture and flavor Definitely, remembered the place being better the first time around but still not a bad alternative if you are in the area.

Overrated. Skewers were overcooked and underseasoned.(gizzard, liver, wagyu). Spicy fried chicken = Americanized Panda-Express-styled sweet and sour chicken. Fried squid legs = two bite portion. Overcooked. Underseasoned. Sauteed pork belly dish= a SPRINKLING of pork amidst a sea of bean sprouts and green onions seasoned with soy sauce, garlic, sesame oil, a splash of michiu, and salt & pepper a.k.a. I could’ve made this at home in less than 3 minutes. Meh. If you want skewers, hit up any random Asian skewer cart in Queens. Pass.

Sake Bar Hagi has its Anthony Bourdain fame as this little izakaya place has now become a popular institution right in Theater District. My experience with Sake Bar Hagi was alright as the food was pretty good, but overall, the service and atmosphere of the restaurant was not really what I was hoping. FOOD: Here, we got the okonomiyaki(seafood), karaage, and yakitori(skewers) set A with that came with skin, pork skin, and the likes. Overall, the food was pretty good. The skewers were pretty tasty, the okonomiyaki was flavorful, and karaage was alright. Nothing too memorbale, but was not bad tasting. SERVICE: A bit slow for a place that busy Friday night rush. The wait is long and the restaurant is small. Sake Bar Hagi continues to be a thrive for its central location for tourists(and locals alike) and Anthony Bourdain’s like for the place. Sadly, I will pass on this izakaya place and try something else around the area.

Right by times square, if your looking for an izakaya to enjoy with friends this is it. With a wide range of Japanese foods and decently priced drinks you can’t really go wrong. A pitcher of Sapporo is $ 12! I especially enjoyed the okonomiyaki(a Japanese style seafood pancake topped with sauce, mayo, and fish flakes), fried takoyaki balls(this was great because regular takoyaki balls are mushy but because it was fried there was great texture), and the chicken nanban I think it was called. My friends said their favorite was the chicken nanban, which was fried chicken that was savory with hints of sweetness. Very juicy. Some disappointments though were the cow tongue which was tough and too hard to eat. Also, the skewers look better in the picture. Come and enjoy a reasonably priced meal right by times square. We came to eat right after watching a broadway show!

You take the entire country of Japan, and all the regional cuisines throughout and put it into one restaurant and you get Sake Bar Hagi. Outside, the sign says Izakaya in Japanese(or Chinese, depending on which race you are), and you can then guess they have nasty bit skewers which to me is the a winner. Highlight of the night. Wasabi octopus. Yum. Natto on the side for $ 3.5. Ask and you shall receive. Hamachi sashimi is fresh. Then go for the kill. Not only they have chicken skin and chicken gizzards, they have skin of chicken gizzards, for 75 cents a skewer, that is $ 0.75 a skewer. I’d pay $ 5 a skewer to try this bizarre but deliciously crunchy item. The restaurant, at 11:45PM, is packed. There is a 1 hour wait for table of 4. I did not have the entourage so I got in very quickly. It’s filled with Asians of all countries. It’s at the bottom basement of the same restaurant. The restaurant address seems to be off by two buildings. But you can’t miss it if you just walk up a little bit. I had bookmarked it since I was here last, in October 2014. And I’m glad that it’s still hopping and offering great deal of late night yummies. Get the draft sake and draft beer to chase down your skewers. Because it’s how one would do it in Japan. Welcome to Japan, in Time Square, no less.

Meh, tried this place several times before and after the Bourdain hype to compare, and there really is nothing amazing. Tried several yakitori and they’re fairly bland. The mentai pasta is good — salty, creamy and carb goodness — but I couldn’t have too much of it. It is very simple though. The miso katsu don my friend got was horrendous. This restaurant is loud, but it doesn’t even create a fun atmosphere as does Kenka or Izakaya MEW. We(two people) were seated on a Sunday night with no wait, so there’s that at least. I’d just suggest you walk your way to Izakaya MEW instead if you’re in this neighborhood.

I think Bourdain sort have popularized this small izakaya awhile so I’m sure it’s not a little hidden gem anymore. Wait time was only 30 minutes for a Saturday night walk up, so I consider that a win in my book. As others have said, it’s small and kinda cramped, and hopefully you’re in the company of friendly neighbors(as we were). Onto the food. We started off with a cod roe spaghetti with shredded seaweed on top, which was FUCKING fabulous. It had that briney/seafood taste but didn’t overwhelm at all. The cream sauce it came with was not too rich and just gave it enough creaminess to feel hearty. I could eat this stuff 24⁄7. It’s highly recommended. We also got the takoyaki and they came out warm, a bit soggy, and was okay with the sauce on top. Wasn’t the hugest fan, but I’ll always be on the lookout for takoyaki on my travels. We finished our meals off with deep fried chicken gizzards which sound strange but are fantastic with the squeeze of lemon on top, and an order of the Japanese style bbq that included chicken skins, chicken, chicken meatballs, chicken liver, pork belly, and peppers. It was all pretty tasty except for the meatballs and chicken. Those were good but really didn’t stand out next to the«butt cut» meats. Good izakaya. I’ll probably be back on my next visit to the city.

I’ve been wanting to try this place for a while. I love yakitori and sushi so when I found out this place had both, it was a done deal. The wait on a Friday at around 6 for 2 people is about 45 minutes. You can put your name and phone number down and they’ll call you when your table is ready. It’s best to get a bunch of things and share it. That way, you can try more dishes. Here are some of the things we ordered: Uni($ 12) — it was my first time trying sea urchin. It kind of reminded me of how crab fat tastes.(Is that even crab fat? You know, that yellow mushy gunk in its shell. Sounds gross but it’s delicious!) I don’t really have any other uni to compare this to but I feel like this one was probably just alright. I’m almost 100% certain there are better ones in NYC. Fried frog legs($ 7) — my first experience ever with frog legs was when I was about 12. I was at a Chinese restaurant and my mom told me it was chicken, so I ate it. I don’t remember it tasting like chicken, or how it tasted at all for that matter. Now that I’m older, and can appreciate bizarre foods(or at least bizarre in my book), I decided to give them olé frog legs a second try. They did taste like chicken! But DRY chicken. Seafood pancake($ 9.50) — consists of chewy squid, too much whatever sauce they use, and super soggy pancake. You can skip this one. Yakitori — if I remember correctly, we ordered the kushi mori A set($ 12)(chicken, chicken meatballs, beef, and shishito peppers). I really wanted to like this because it looked so good and had so many great Unilocal reviews. Unfortunately, this was dry too. We also ordered some of the salmon sashimi($ 9) which was very good. Almost melts in your mouth. Last but not least, the drinks! We ordered a glass of sake but I can’t remember which one it was. I’m not a huge fan of sake but we decided we were going to bring back college days and do some sake bombs(minus the chopsticks and pounding on the table because I mean come on… gotta try to keep it a LITTLE classy!) Glasses are about $ 7-$ 8 and there are probably about 4 shots or so. And let’s not forget the beer! At $ 12 a pitcher for Kirin or Sapporo, it’s pretty much a steal, eespecially for midtown. If I come back, it’ll be for the drinks and the sashimi. Not the yakitori.

So happy I found this place. It’s pretty cheap for the food you get and the environment is great for a chill dinner. It’s pretty hard to find because you have to take stairs down to get here. It’s across from the Barclays building on 49th St and isn’t too far of a walk down. I came here on a Sunday night with my bf and it was packed so the waitress told us to leave a number and she’d call back in 30 minutes. She ended up calling us 10 minutes after so don’t wander too far if this is what happens to you! We ordered the Mentai Pasta, Soy Katsu Over Rice, and Sashimi Appetizer. All of them were great. My pasta was my favorite of the night and had this creamy seafood taste that I just kept reaching for. My bf’s rice was good for him because he loves rive. The katsu was a little too salty for me so just eat it with the rice as opposed to alone. The sashimi appetizer was not bad but took a little while to come out. I expected appetizers to come out first. Overall, I really liked the vibe of this place and the people are really friendly. They have TV’s up on the wall so you can watch games or whatever’s on. What they’re most known for is their skewers so I look forward to trying these in the future.

I have no clue why everyone likes this place. The food is inedible. Maybe you have to be completely drunk out of your mind to appreciate this food?! We went yesterday and ordered the Takana Meshi which is sauteed pork and takana pickles over rice. We also ordered the Omusoba which is stir fried yakisoba noodle and pork wrapped in an omlette and topped with Okonomiyaki sauce and mayonnaise. It was unbearable super duper salty. How can people eat this. I do not like wasting food so I just went along with it when I really wanted to tell the waiter but I didn’t want to make a fuss and we had to leave soon because of show tickets. Not that the waiter was really there to ask us how the food was. We were kind of ignored during the entire meal. Not that I care much. I do not plan on coming back to Sake Bar Hagi. The food was disgusting!

Still one of the best Japanese restaurants in NYC. There’s just something about this place that keeps you wanting more. My friends and I stopped by on a Monday night — it was quieter than my first experience. By that I mean there were three or four free tables for those late night eaters. Tried their eggplant glazed with sweet miso — so yummy. The eggplant meat is so tender but the skin is actually crisp that you can eat it as well. Had some natto with green onions(not on the menu, but the chef was kind enough to spare some of his time to make it) and a bowl of their grated yam… all oh so fresh. My friends had grilled squid, seared tuna with garlic chips and special sauce, lamb, chicken, and beef sticks, and radish salad topped with little fried sardines. Every single dish was cooked to perfection. Love love love this place — it’s like Japanese tapas… fun to eat with friends.
