Serge Normant At John Frieda Salon

I had the worst experience of my life at the uptown location of John Frieda on 76 th street. I had been going there for my 3 times a year chemical straightening with ELBA. It was never that great, just ok, but I couldn’t find another place so I kept going back. In may of this year (2015) I don’t know what Elba did wrong but my hair became a bale of hay, like straw. I called her to tell her. She started yelling at me on the phone and called me an idiot and told me it was MY fault (?). I said to her — Elba, I thought we were friends, how can you talk to me like this? She said she never liked me and I should get lost and never come back! (I guess she liked my big tips, though). There is no fix for what happened to
conditioner or leave– in can help. You have to trim the bottom every month until you grow a new head of undamaged hair, which takes at least a year, and that is for short hair like I have.
This is the worst I have ever been treated, and they made ELBA the manager, so I don’t even know who else to complain to. The whole place is nasty, and after 9 years no one ever even said hello when I came in or acted in a civil manner. And the receptionists are beyond rude. They are all stuck up snobs. I beg you to listen to me and just don’t go there! It’s a horror show!

I’ve lived in New York for my entire life and I can safely say that you cannot get a better stylist in this city than Geoffrey. He is perfection.

Ok let me start off by saying the guy at the front desk Jonathan was so sweet and was able to fit me in last minute to see Alexander for a blow out and let me tell you it’s the best blow out I have ever had he did exactly what I wanted I look forward to seeing him again!

Tommy has been cutting my hair for over 10 years, he is creative, consistent, professional, and extremely talented.
If your looking for an awesome hair cut… book this man.

I’ve been seeing Amanda for about 4 years. I don’t go for the salon or the receptionists, or anyone else… it’s all about Amanda. She’s been consistently fantastic, and learned what I liked and how I liked it, and over the years, we’ve developed a real relationship. I have thinning hair that I’ve always been self-​conscious about, but Amanda offered several productive solutions and eventually encouraged me and got me comfortable with getting a hair supplement from a local hair shop. She’s been with me every step of the way – selecting it with me, customizing it, cutting it, styling it, even coloring it as necessary, to make sure it suited me perfectly and looked totally natural so I could be comfortable and confident. Amanda is fantastic and is really dedicated to her clients.

Have been coming here for haircuts with Renee Cohen. Any time I try some place else just for kicks, I regret it. She is terrific. Doesn’t chat overly much, just does her job and does it amazingly. I have Asian hair that’s changing with age from thick and coarse to finer/​thinner, always with a slight wave and she’s does wonders, whether I want to go ultra-​short or long or somewhere in-​between. Can’t recommend her highly enough.

Renee is the best for hi-​lites for brunettes. after a first visit we decided to select a base color i could live with for several weeks before she did any additional coloring, my hair being too light from previous highlighting. she was absolutely correct. after my 2^nd visit and highlights my hair is ABSOLUTELY beautiful. I have never gotten so many compliments on color. My haircut resembles Lisa Rinna’s and Renee said I needed someone who could do this precise cutting. I have thin/​fine hair. she suggested Mariko who did a FABULOUS cut. So easy after washing. required very mininal blowing drying. Just fell into place. In fact I, m cancelling my appt with Lisa Rinna’s stylist in L.A.

I have been going here for years because of the talented colorists and stylists, but the front desk is so unpleasant to deal with that I have to force myself to make another appointment each time.
Is it really that hard to treat clients with kindness, be helpful and treat people with respect versus dishing out attitude, arguments, and grumpiness?
Luxury service should be about … LUXURY SERVICE. Why can’t the front desk act more professionally? The younger receptionist is better than the older one, who just couldn’t be crankier.

Zero Stars. I know a lot about the beauty business, formally a beauty publicist of this exact uptown salon. I called for a hair color appt., the receptionist was so nasty and short. No help in guiding me to the right colorist, god forbid details about anything. It was sort of like do you want it or not, lady. I ultimately cancelled the appointment after calling Fekkai across the street. The woman was so professional, asked 10 questions and was just lovely. Get some skilled people on the phone –this is the business of beauty! Surprising that a so called upscale salon like this can skip on their staff. Makes me question their services.

You can’t get something for nothing. I bought a Gilt certificate for balayage highlights and I wonder if it was the certificate that made the service I received so awful.
I hate to write negative reviews, but in this case I feel that it is warranted.
At first everything was great. I came in a few minutes early, the receptionist and stylist assistant were nice, and I had a good interaction with my stylist as she worked on my hair. Then another client came in and I was handed over to the stylists assistant. The horror ensued.
We went to the washing basin where she rinsed my hair, and the applied a gloss. The so-​called gloss smelled like cheap hair dye, the sort that comes from a pharmacy. She left it on my hair until I could feel my scalp burning. Then, she rinsed it and failed to wash it all out (I discovered this later when I got home and found it in my ears and in parts of my hair).
I wasn’t asked if I wanted a blow out, rather I was handed a bag of dirty hair brushes, filled with other clients’ hair and a bottle of old mousse. I dried my hair, and discovered that it had the smell of an at-​home dye job.
My stylist who was next to me chatting it up with her new client, didn’t even bother to check the results of my hair, which I thought was not only unprofessional but really rude. Maybe she knew what a terrible job she did, but I have never experienced such a careless approach. If you want to know who my stylist was, send me a private message and I will gladly tell you.
I got home and rinsed my hair, since the stylists assistant was so incompetent. Sure enough more gloss and color came out, but sadly, not that cheap smell.
The condition of my hair is fried, the color is coppery and flat and I will have to have it fixed, as soon as it calms down. I will never go to this salon again, nor will I ever purchase another Gilt or any other discount coupon, for I am sure this awful service had something to do with it.

Totally bummed! I was running late for my 1:30 appointment for single process hair color, so I called before the scheduled appointment to let them know I’d be 10 minutes later. Reception kept me on the phone long enough to get close enough, but ultimately canceled my appointment anyway! At 1:32, I was at 61^st and 3^rd, so we’re talking about ten minutes late. I 100% understand what it’s like having a tight schedule (since I have one). However, you would think that an equally busy business would understand how hard it is to make time, and would try to work out an acceptable option – especially as I’m nearing the salon.
No point in telling you the whole rambly story, but here’s why I will never go back:
–I was forgotten on hold;
–The receptionist argued with me about the service I was coming in for (I might know what I’m coming in for);
–The receptionist was unwilling to help figure out a good time for everyone or some other solution; and
-(although this might be asking too much), was unwilling to be forgiving for literally 10 minute lateness, which seems draconian.
Too bad. the reviews for this location were great, and I was really looking forward to some TLC.

I visited last week to do the Bayalage color due to a Gilt certificate. I found the salon space to be extremely underwhelming despite the neighborhood. The receptionist had the typical «high-​end salon» attitude, she proceeded to direct me to a big but sort of dingy bathroom to get changed. I was led by an assistant to my seat, who was friendly but I felt a little off, almost a condescending friendliness– she was a smaller Asian girl. Garmon was great, got right to my hair after examining the old highlights. I was pretty happy with the results, she wasn’t too chatty but I think because she could tell I wasn’t in the mood to talk either. After the coloring, I got shampooed by the assistant who I swear was shaking and going at my head so hard, I felt like a piñata she was trying to get candy out of. Literally, I felt like I was in an earthquake. She asked abotut he pressure but I was a bit intimidated to say anything. She tried to sell me on a blow-​out which for $ 35 I feel is a bit steep so I declined. Thus, after she finished with me, she pointed to a chair, handed me a comp and blow dryer and just walked away. I wasn’t even sure if she was done or not but I just started combing and then quickly left. Its unfortunate because I really liked Garmon’s work but I think I’ll want to go downtown next time, everything except for her just left me feeling uneasy.

Christophe is absolutely without a shadow of a doubt, the best hair dresser I ever went to. When you want a haircut and not sure how to describe it, he reads your mind! Always gets my cut right, doesn’t burn my hair when he blow-​dries it, and he gives good tips on how to care for your hair at home. I also love his asst. Matthew, he’s very attentive and friendly from when you walk in the door until you walk out.

I was a first-​time visitor to Serge Normant at John Frieda this weekend, where Garmon proceeded to give me an amazing set of balayage highlights. I can’t wait to see how they grow out! She was great; totally personable, knowledgeable and professional. Her assistant Leanne (not sure if I’m spelling that right) was also super friendly and had the coolest Chanel-​inspired gray/​blonde hair. Amanda was a really rad chick who gave me the best blow out ever. I got so many compliments that day – I must have been asked for my stylist’s name at least three times since Saturday!
The best thing about the salon is the feeling of luxury they cultivate. It’s not THE most elegant space I’ve ever seen but they more than make up for it with very attentive service, including the customary complementary tea/​coffee and a wonderful staff. I will definitely be coming back here.

Salon located on the second floor of a building on the corner of Madison Ave, this salon somehow manages to remain friendly and unpretentious. No small feat given the celebrity following Serge Normant enjoys and the posh address and décor. On a sunny day the light pours in and it is a very cheerful salon. Tons of stylist chairs – clearly they are busy.
My real review is a shout out to assistant stylist Matthew Jeffrey. So personable, so talented, his blow-​outs keep me coming back. My hair is perfectly glossy with lots of volume, no frizz. He’s a real star in my book. If the management has any brains, he’ll be bumped up stat (and no, I’m not being paid to write this!). Wait… if he is promoted then maybe his rates will go up… on second thought…

I am a haircut-​phobe.
I have long, black hair that I rarely style or trim. Typically, I get a haircut every 4 – 6 months, with nothing special done to it in particularly.
While I was vacationing in New York this past spring break, I was getting frustrated with my overgrown bangs and shaggy, lifeless limps. As a co-​ed on a budget, I looked up hair schools that would offer me a cut at a reasonable price.
With some research, I came across the John Frieda school. Since I was there for a week, I ended up going with them since they were able to accommodate my schedule.
The school’s space is a floor in a building, kind of small, but very nice-​looking. Upon arrival, they made me put on a black overcoat and offered me some tea.
My hairdresser, Liela, has been working as an apprentice for the past five years. I told them I wanted some more layers and life in my hair, and I specified that I didn’t want anything thin and Japanese-​like. I never comb or style my hair, so I wanted a cut that would accommodate my just-​got-​out-​of-​bed look (more like lifestyle!)
With the guidance of the teacher (I forget his name, he’s an Asian guy that’s lived in London for awhile) they gave me awesome, subtle layers and gave me voluminous curls at the end. The instructor understood the look I was going for.
I think the cut came out to be $ 40-​$ 50, not including tip. I definitely recommend this place and will be going back the next time I’m in New York!

I have been to many salons in my time, but this boutique salon really services their clients. More so, Dominick Pucciarello, my hair stylist, is the master-​a true ARTIST. His hair cut gets better with each day and his blow outs are the best! I recommend this salon to anyone who wants either shape their hair or go with a new do! The location is also right in the middle of some of the best shops in NY.

It was my first time at the new space in the Meatpacking district. It is a small, modern salon with warm staff. Stephanie, who cut my hair, is awsome. I knew she was for me when I saw her bob and she told me she cuts her own hair; I knew she would work magic on my bob, which was in need of a lot of work. I am a fan of hers now and will go back next week for a color, as the colorist, Mel and Stephanie offered their suggestions to me. Prices are low by NY standards. She offered great blow drying/​tool tips too! I was disappointed that Serge is never there to cut my hair, but now I am thrilled that I have found Stephanie!
All the stylists seem to really know their craft! Front desk staff were great too.
