smiths was amazing. period. but. dont order the mac n cheese ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ and if that review wasn’t satisfying… here is a far more comprehensive one My boyfriend’s old old coworker now works at Smiths and this wonderful hook-up was deliciously awesome. We ate roughly a third of the entire menu– EVERYTHING was delicious except the Mac n Cheese… EVERYTHING was delectable!(minus that macn’cheese…) Dessert took me over the moon. However, the grilled pineapple desert could’ve stayed on the grill a little longer– it would’ve made the sugars tastier and give it more of a punch GETTHESTRAWBERRYANDTHEPEANUTBUTTERDESSERTS Those two literally knocked my sandals off! Service was great– to the point where its almost a little annoying. The waiter doesn’t have to ask if everythings alright twenty times! They constantly changed my cutlery, plates and kept the dinner table clean from crumbs so I can stretch over the table to get to my honey^^ Ambiance was beautiful~~~ perfect date spot I need to come back again and again and again This place truly does deserve all five stars!

To the waiter who had the pleasure(or displeasure) of serving my table last night — I just want to say thank you. Dealing with 4 women who can drink, one who has been drinking all day and slept a total of 19 hours within the past 4 days, plus a need for great service — you did amazing. The wine– delicious. And yes Mr. Waiter, we DID ask if we had finished the bottle when we realized it wasn’t on our table. THANKYOU for putting it on ice but if you do that again and take our wine bottle out of vision again, we may have a problem ;). The atmosphere– to die for. Perched against a small window in a booth(only way to go — booth or bust.) the 4 of us could have a conversation without screaming. The food– WOW. I ordered the bistro salad which had chicken liver, speck, poached egg. My other diners picked at the steak, salmon and cleared plates. All was amazing. Service– like I said. A gem. Come here for anything. Dinner with girlfriends. Dinner with your boyfriend/girlfriend. Come early for a drink in the cute bar in the back too if you can.

My friends and I were having a get together on a Monday night. With restaurants losing business in this economy many have proposed amazing deals to entice diners on off-nights. An article in New York Magazine led me to Smith’s Monday/Tuesday night chicken dinner special– a meal for 2 people, $ 35 total(not each!). Perfect. The décor in Smith’s is modern and clean looking with a mirrored ceiling and lattice work defining the difference dining spaces. They have a bar in the back, booths in the middle, tables by the window, and outdoor seating. The lighting is low, which sets the mood but makes for terrible pictures… There were 4 of us but we ordered 1 «chicken dinner» and some extras to maximize our variety. To start: onion ring appetizer($ 6) and fried burrata($ 4) from the bar menu. The onions were huge, not too greasy and its sauce had a nice kick to it. The fried burrata is the perfect grown up version of mozzarella sticks. I could have eaten so many more than my one little sample. The ramp risotto with mushrooms and preserved lemons is neon green, its a crazy combination of flavors that worked well together, though the risotto could have been cooked to a better consistency. The chicken dinner came with a large salad full of fresh veggies that was brought out with the rest of our appetizers. Our chicken was served on a hot skillet; its skin crackled and the white meat was juicy. This is not something I could easily replicate at home. The sides of earthy mushrooms and rich polenta were equally satisfying. And yet there is more, a dessert of chocolate mousse with pistachios also comes with the dinner deal. The mousse is neither too light nor too dense, and the salt of the pistachios brings out the chocolate flavor while adding a crunch. It was a large enough serving that we all got to end our meal with many spoonfuls of sweetness. We loved the long spoons and the freezing cold bowls they came with. Lets recap: fresh salad, two delicious sides, a perfectly roasted chicken, and a chocolatey dessert for $ 35. This is a deal worth going out for on a Monday/Tuesday night.

For the price range and quality, Smith’s is a very place. Four of us went for a celebratory dinner — champagne, 3 courses, the works. The beef tartare was delicious. My friends enjoyed their roasted beets and the clams. Steak, scallops, and salmon entrees were all a hit. The peanut butter cup dessert was more chocolate cake than any PB flavor, but the roasted pineapples w/coconut ice-cream was a wonderful palate cleanser. Overall, a good night out and would definitely go back.

Had a fantastic meal here with a group of 8 last week. We are a friendly but not always cooperative bunch and the service was great all the way through. We had an early reservation and they never rushed us. We waited for the entire group to arrive in the bar that i had no idea was hidden in the back. I would even go there just to get a drink and some snacks. Very cozy, good drink options(the bourbon with maple and lemon one i had was delicious). Between us we tried most of the items on the menu and the two standouts were the chicken with grits and the slow cooked pork. also, the bar items at the bottom of the menu are easy to miss if you are sitting at a table, but don’t. the lightly fried fresh mozarella balls are heavenly. and get your own, they are small and you are not going to want to share. the best dessert was the peanut butter cup, which was a little on the small side for two people to share because it was really good so you actually wanted more when it was done. Only downside is that coffees didn’t come till after we finished the desserts which i never like. But that was a very minor blemish on an otherwise really great meal. I will definitely go back here.

I just got back from Smith’s and it was pretty good! I had wine and the scallops entrée, other people had the braised ribs, pork chop, chicken entrée, mussels, octopus appetizer, and duck. Everything was above average(however my friend didn’t like her pork chop), and the guys couldn’t stop raving about the DUCK(«best duck I’ve ever had in my life»)and braised ribs. It is a good place for groups, great service, nice mellow music that leaves room for conversation. Was in great company, would definitely return :)

A block away from the dive bars of Macdougal street is a quiet street with a handful of restaurants that seem very dining-worthy. A group of my co-workers and I went to Smith’s and we walked into a very beautifully slick and modern designed restaurant but didn’t come off too snooty or stuffy. The atmosphere was very casual and very inviting. The staff was really friendly and our waiter was really helpful and talkative. For me, the appetizers were the highlight of our dinner. I started with their app special, Cod Fritters. It was a little dry and salty for me but others seemed to like it. I shared half of the Cauliflower Soup and I enjoyed that a lot. The soup was smooth and the trout and brioche allowed for added flavors and textures. My favorite appetizer was the mussels! The mussels tasted fresh and the sauce was spicy and added a nice touch to the salty flesh of the mussel. For an entrée, I ordered the red wine braised shortribs. It was good but a little dry and not as tender as other short ribs I’ve had in the past. My plate came out cold which I now regret not sending back. The polenta was delicious and the sauce on the short ribs had the good blend of sweet and salty. I didn’t try anyone else’s dishes but the chicken seemed like a winner. For dessert, we ordered the cheesecake with sour cherry compote and chocolate parfait, the affogato with vanilla ice cream and the chocolate almond cake with toasted almonds. The cheesecake was delicious but the affogato was my favorite(espresso over vanilla ice cream). I didn’t try the almond cake but people seemed happy with that as well. Overall, I would come back but it wasn’t an outstanding experience for the price. It’s definitely a good date place but the next time I’m in the area I would like to try the other choices on the block.

Just went there last night with a couple of my girlfriends for the first time and had a good dining experience overall. I got excited about this place right when I walked in. The place looked sophisticated yet inviting and cozy. It reminded me of an old-school train, like a dining car of european trains or something. I like how the bar is tucked away inside. Then saw the menu, and liked this place even more. Simply-prepared, yummy-sounding dishes and drinks. The drinks were in fact great. Loved Smith’s old fashioned. Had Chittara with butternut squash for appetizer, which was very good. The pasta had to be home made. After serious dilemma, I chose Braised Short Ribs over Pork Chop with Bean Ragu. The short rib was tasty and tender as our waitor promised it to be; but it was a bit dry and, if it had come with more of that deliscious red wine sauce, it would have been better. Oh by the way, our selection from the menu was not influenced at all by our handsome waitor’s recommendations, we swear.

Usually I can tell right away when someone doesn’t like me, and normally I don’t let it bother me. But when it’s my date, that kinda hurts. This was another of my many recent first dates. I have no difficulty meeting women in the real world, but I thought I’d expand my possibilities with online dating and see what happens. Anyway, we’d seen each other’s photos on a dating site and spoken on the phone several times, but never actually met. On the phone she let it be known that she doesn’t like mustaches and beards or «fur» as she put it(which I currently have), but I thought my charm and wit and innate animal grace would persuade her to look past this small tonsorial barrier. We met at The Room on Sullivan street. I’d never been there before and, based on Unilocal reviews, was under the impression the music wouldn’t be too loud to impair conversation. This turned out to be inaccurate. The music was booming and we could hardly hear each other, and it was so dark I could barely see her face. Had this been a second or third date it wouldn’t have mattered much, but I did want to see what the woman looks like and how she sounds when not shouting. So I suggested we move to another place nearby that would be more pleasant, Smith’s. This was a good choice. I knew there was a hidden bar all the way in the back on the right. As it turned out there were just a few people seated at the bar, and the music, which was tasteful, was at just the right volume to permit a relaxed convo. And the lighting was dim enough to be romantic yet bright enough to get a clear view of each other. We didn’t look like we belonged together; she was wearing a chic, tailored white coat and crisp business suit; I was in distressed jeans and a white-t-shirt and sportjacket. Though the jacket was a pinstriped Ralph Lauren POLO, it didn’t seem enough to compensate for the rest of me. I really like Smith’s. Lots of black leather and wrought iron. The bar itself is plush gray velvet. It has an elegant but understated flair, like an old European café, sophisticated, but unpretentious. Yes, unfortunately, you have to bring your own pretension(BYOP). They have a great seasonal menu, but at the bar they only serve snacks, but oh what delicious ones! My date had deviled eggs with hackleback caviar and I had braised pork sliders. We sampled each other’s dishes. Mmm… wow…magnifique! The eggs were like little heavenly clouds. The bar has an ample list of wines too, sold by the glass or half-bottle. We both had a few California pinot noirs. California pinot noir is considered inferior to that of Burgandy(the Bourgogne province), but is slowly building its reputation. These were velvety smooth with the characteristic complex blend of fruitiness and spiciness. They helped set the mood nicely. We chatted and laughed and seemed to be getting along fine, but I could tell that there wasn’t much happening in terms of romantic feelings. This was made clear to me when, while admiring her unusual bracelet, I touched it and she immediately withdrew her wrist. At one point we started talking about our favorite TV shows. When I mentioned«Entourage» she exclaimed that the star of that show, Adrian something or other, was absolutely gorgeous! I took the opportunity to remind her that he often is unshaven, with a scruffy growth. She acknowledged this, but clarified that it wasn’t «fur.» She’s a high executive in the hospitality business and, when we were discussing fun things to do in the city, she actually took out a pad of paper and began writing down the places I suggested. She loved Smith’s and confided that she would put this on her list of places to entertain clients. When we parted I extended my hand to shake, but she said, «lets do a hug.» I complied, but then promptly she pulled back. She said«call me and we’ll go on a tour of some of those places you mentioned.» I said«sure,» knowing full well I’d never place that call and suspecting she didn’t really want me to. Probably we both should have been more honest, but at least this way the evening ended on a pleasant note. Thanks to Smith’s it was a very enjoyable evening and I look forward to returning there some time soon with someone who likes me. At least I harbor that hope. :-)

These folks were so amazing. I made a reservation and mentioned it was my sister’s birthday, that I’d probably want a candle to go in whatever dessert I ordered. When we arrived, the hostess wished her a happy birthday. Later, the manager came over to do the same and chatted us up. And toward the end, another manager came over to do the same — and he was sort of sexy. And oh, the food. Great. The pasta appetizer with shaved zucchini and crushed pepper was a little salty and spicy for me, but it was light and tasty, too. We shared a freaking steak after that. A STEAK, mind you(I am new to meat eating, so good for me.) And it was tasty. Best part was warm molten chocolate cake(with candle.) And the campari and soda. And mostly how freaking nice everyone was. They also have a teeny bar in the back that is removed from the restaurant, very cool to have a 2nd atmosphere. Go. Check it out.

MacDougal Street has certainly cleaned up it’s act recently(particularly on the south end) with a plethora of new restaurants opening. And when my dear Ms. Chantelle K pronounced this to be one of her favorite restaurants in the city, expectations were high. And they were almost met… almost. We started off with a nick when they didn’t have our table ready even though we had a reservation, but it offered us the time for a lovely glass of white at the bar in the back. They get major points for creative use of space: the shape of the restaurant is long and narrow with a larger open space in the back. They certainly seem to get the most out of it. Décor is dark and handsome: near black woods and ornate wrought iron dividers between booths. The food was really quite excellent — heavy on the fish and seafood, which always works for me. I started with the Cape Cod squid which was charred and smokey and delicious, and followed that up with the Dorade, which was good, but not outstanding. Had a slight fishiness to it that wasn’t great. Got better as I ate it, but first impressions are hard to break. Service was superb, prices were standard for an upscale West Village bistro. Really it’s a 4 and a half, but I just can’t quite give it that 5th star. Don’t get me wrong, Smith’s is mighty close to perfection, but a few tiny things keep it from the final star(also, after looking at my rating distribution, I decided I’m WAY too nice, so I’m being nitpicky).

Yummmmmy… the veggie salad & home made pasta/morel/fava thingy were my dinner – super tasty & delish! Nice bathroom & rear bar. Very stylish interior. Great Bordeaux Blanc by the glass! Excellent service, even though I was being an indecisive wimp. Docking a star because what my companion ordered(snow pea appetizer & scallops entrée) was just ok. Peas were over-cooked but still tasty with the breadcrumb topping, and the scallops & foam were a little too bland for my taste. Although, I always think scallops taste like a tongue, and these were sweet & firm – nicely cooked. The sauce/seasoning could have used a little something though. Finished with the cheesecake ice cream dessert which was pretty good, but on the fussy side of what I like for sweeties, what with the mille-feuille pastry & powdered sugar. Other than what I mentioned, I loved this place – the colors, the gay boys at every table, the décor – FINALLY somewhere adult to eat in the morass of frat party/bongwater/thug fabulousness that has become my NYC neighborhood. A beacon in the sloppy NYU infested night! AHHHHhhhhhhhhh…

Foam Foam Foam! It was included in my steamed egg(so yummy), my scallops(some of the best that i’ve had), and in my mother’s black bass(also tasty), but it was good foam… it actually had a flavor! The pea soup was also extremely yummy, as was the grilled squid and the lamb saddle. Also, I don’t normally like brussels sprouts, but the sauteed brussels sprouts were delicious! I had almost all of our shared portion. Desserts were also quite yummy. I preferred the chocolate brle to the cheesecake ice cream, but my father liked it the other way around. To each his own. The décor is modern, but still very cozy. The wait staff was extremely pleasant, and did not rush us. A definite addition to our rotation of restaurants.

Oh yum. Yum yum yum yum YUM. The chef here does this amazing thing with the sauces that make each individual flavor POP while simultaneously enhancing all the other ingredients. Eat here and you’ll see what I mean. The décor is elegant. «Modern with a classic twist,» sniffed my mother approvingly. Portions are generous. My parents and I shared the baby squid appetizer(lovely, with strong hints of arugula and pancetta), and though I was afraid we’d get two tentacles each, max, it was plenty for the three of us. We also shared the homemade corzetti as an appetizer, which was ethereally delicious in its cheesy, favalicious, morelicious glory. I will note that the portion size for this alone was rather disappointing. For our entrees, we had the seared diver scallops, crispy black bass, and roasted chicken. Each of us enjoyed our entrée and didn’t really offer to share. In my opinion, the scallops were the weakest(but in my mind, I compared them to what I had at Allen & Delancey), the chicken was fantastic(I almost never order chicken because it’s usually boring, but it was tender, crisp, and paired with the most mouthwatering ramp-based sauce), and the bass was the strongest(once again, the chef is a sauce-demon. I can only imagine what planning went into these juices). For desserts, we had the panna cotta and chocolate tart w/banana ice cream. Both were great finishes to a decadent meal. Actually, though the dishes tasted rich and satisfying, and we all ate to excess, we left feeling comfortably full rather than disgustingly sated. I enjoyed the desserts, but they can be skipped if you’re too full, or if you’d rather mosey on down to the nearby Dessert Truck. I’m somewhat on the fence about giving this a five, but I’d like to return to give it another chance.

I had wanted to try this restaurant after the New York mag review because I was intrigued by the egg appetizer described.(Despite not wanting to be another NY mag mob-ster). My interest coincided with discovering Unilocal which validated my decision to try it.(Thanks, Reviewers!) Went last night. I like the room a lot.(For some reason it reminds of the décor store in NoLita, Capitol, which always looked especially crisp and polished when I’d window-shop on dog walks in the past. Is it still there?) Somebody has done a really good job of working with the limitations of a very narrow room. Designer got some serious lo-key swank into it … like I imagine high end railroad car dining might have been in some Bruce McCall version of the past … Very warm, welcoming staff.(And if you drink, the cocktail bar in the back is one of the most inviting little nooks I’ve ever seen … I’d like to fall in love and murmur over cocktails there … and drink … but alas … You should, tho!) But I’m here to talk about the egg thing. I just have to. It is one of the lushest and best-conceived dishes I’ve ever eaten. Now, in the morning as I write this, I am absolutely yearning for it – it HAS to be a breakfast item somewhere, please. On some menu somewhere, soon? And even if it’s 75% as good, I’ll be happy. It reminds me of my first trip down South, a restaurant in Columbia, SC when a waiter, describing the specials said«Salmon and grits.» I LOL-ed, charmed, thinking«isn’t he adorable.» Then, I realized he wasn’t kidding, and I was a regionalist stereotyping moron. So in a paroxysm of PC guilt, I ordered it. Best thing I ever had– in the category of richly buttery, exquisitely close-harmonied. Like a La Crema chardonnay. This egg dish is like that. The polenta is made with milk, and undoubtedly a lot of really good, shy butter, and acts as a medium, a genial opportunity for dairy products to get back together. The gorgonzola foam is not an effete gesture; a foam about which you say«oy, foam» and do an eye-roll. This foam wafts over the dish like a breeze, carry some gorgonzola news, and is an integral part of what makes the slow shiver run down your spine and end with a curl of your toes. It is really, really good. Everything else was fine. The sardines are better at Casa Mono. The baby beets were over-sauced, as was my friend’s, Dorade. Desserts were both good. And the ginger ice cream is as good as everybody says it is – egg dish good. Because of the inventiveness and sheer deliciousness of the egg app, I trust them and will go back. Especially, if they do breakfast. I’ll even settle for brunch.

A warm, spring night in NYC. Everyone’s out on the town in their hot little numbers(or with their hot little number!) and what better way to kick off a raucous night than with a decadent meal in a great new joint? Went here last night for supper and it really is all it’s cracked up to be. We made 9:30pm reservations and as I heard this place is already hoppin, we were prepared to wait. And wait we did though it was only about 15 min. But if we didn’t have to wait, we would have never known about the sweet little bar hidden away in the back with little nooks, stools and tables. They have a list of signature cocktails and I tried the Mint Julep(lovely and refreshing) and one of my buds had the Gimlet which was also good. The staff were lovely and kept swinging by to check on us and apologize for the wait — but like I said, we didn’t mind kicking it in the back and catching up. After we were brought to our table, it was go time! We got 3 apps: the artichoke pasta(as everyone’s said below, GETIT. Hell, get 2); the grilled baby squid(a-a-amazing) and an endive salad which was good, but compared to the other two, nothing to write home about. I got the lamb saddle with mint and pea sauce. I cleaned my plate and didn’t share sooo, that should tell you how good it was. My dinner pals got the sea bass and scallops. Judging by the fact they also cleaned their plates and didn’t share, I’d have to hedge a bet they enjoyed their meals just as much as I did. And now for dessert! 3 little piggies couldn’t choose so we got the warm apple cake with ginger ice cream(I would buy the ginger ice cream on its own, by the gallon and horde it by myself in my apartment) and the warm chocolate brownies with peanut butter mouse. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone — perfect for a date, family or a group(though it does get a bit loud but I think it’s because everyone is having such a good time!). I, for one, will be back soon — especially as many of their dishes are seasonal so I can’t wait to see what else they whip up!

I was pleasantly surprised by Smith’s. Went there on a sunny afternoon with a couple of friends. The host was very gracious and despite the 1-hr wait, was able to get us a table right away as long as we vacated it after 1.5 hrs to make way for a party that made reservations, which was fine with us. We started with the steamed egg. Perfect for brunch, perfect for an appetizer. We also shared the sardines, which were delicious as well. Our waitress politely steered me to get the striped bass with the celery risotto. This dish was AMAZING. The fish was cooked perfectly, but the highlight for me was the celery risotto; I’ve never tasted anything like it! I tried everything my friends ordered, including the scallops(perfectly cooked), the chicken(crispy and moist). The interesting thing about this place is, as you go down the entrée list, nothing really stands out. However, when you get your meal, all components are truly original and work well together to tickle your palate in ways you’ve never imagined. Every dish’s accompaniment, whether it was a risotto, purée or veggie, is what makes the meal truly amazing. My husband ordered the soup of the day(cold pea soup), which was fresh and clean. As his main dish, he ordered the homemade corzetti with mushrooms and walnuts purée. That, my friend, was simply heavenly. It’s listed as an accompaniment, but order it as a main. It’s so, so good! The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere is pretty relaxed, even for a nice restaurant such as this. The crowd was a little older(more like my granny’s age), but that made it for a quieter environment where you can talk instead of shout.

The décor is very attractive. There are antiqued-mirrors all around even a ceiling mirror. Sexy black leather banquet seating in the front dining room, also booth seating in the narrow dining room that leads to the hidden back bar. It’s intimate and not dimmed down. The food was great, portions were small but very satisfying. Everything we ordered was delicious, size didn’t matter because quality was at its best. We had: artichoke pasta(apps) — I wanted an entrée-sized plate of it! It was too mouth-watering to share; cauliflower and cheese gratin — bite size cauliflower in light creamy teleggio cheese; grilled rib-eye steak with spinach, bone marrow gravy and potato dumpling — very small and the spinach came in the same texture as the gravy, overall it was grilled to perfection and very tasty; wild striped bass in(?) and celery root — devine but small. I had the warm chocolate brownie with peanut butter mousse and candied peanuts, the four bite-sized brownies was sooo good. I’ll definitely be back.

If you please – a moment of silence, awe, admiration and appreciation for the menu item that has single-handedly bumped Smith’s up from a 3-star review to 4-stars: Truffle Deviled Eggs. Simply put, MIND-MELTING. And they’re not even on the main menu! They’ve got to be ordered at the bar, so take note, and arrive 45 minutes early for your reservation, like I did. However, do not order the house cocktails, like I did. Not well made, not at all. Stick to wine. Wine and Truffle Deviled Eggs. The rest of the experience was… varied. Like Meryl C says, Connor the host is charming as hell. I can’t even describe it – he just made me feel like he was so genuinely happy I was there, and that he genuinely wanted to make me happy I was there, too. It’s always such a great surprise when hosts are nice, because they almost never are. This is sad, but commentary for another day, perhaps. Food highlights(besides TDEs, of course) included a heart-stopping artichoke pasta, perfect bibb lettuce salad and a solid striped bass. Fantastic texture. Everything else, though – cauliflower gratin, mushroom pasta and brussel sprouts – was merely decent. Ambiance-wise, it’s a nice space, but like others have said, a little cramped and pretty loud, even on a Monday night. So I’m not going to rush out to go back here for dinner, but if I’m in the neighborhood and craving a tasty snack, I can see how it might be hard to resist a quick stop for more deviled eggs. Mmmm…truffles…

From: Courtney P. NYNY USA To: Santa Claus North Pole Not in the USA Dear Santa, I know that you and I have a long running relationship plagued with guilt, joy and disappointment. When I was 4, I wanted the Muppets piano so I could play music. I know that you got bought off by my parents… they wanted some quiet. When I was 6 I wanted ballet pointe shoes. I just didn’t realize that«pretty-plus» sized me and ballet were like drinking and driving… they didn’t mix. When I was 12, I wanted Guess jeans. Pay $ 60 for jeans? I know… I think you almost had a coronary. When I was 16 I wanted a date to the prom. No dice… but it wasn’t your fault my hair was permed and feathered. Now that I’m er… uh… the age I am… I’d like to go back to Smith’s. I know Santa… tall order. I’m not even asking for a date. But a trip back to the beautiful, quiet 20’s style narrow space just makes you feel fancy and the drinks at the back bar are well made. The service was laid back, the food smelled delicious. So please, Santa, I still believe in you! If you could pull this one off, I promise I’ll be good for all of 2008. Or at least the first few days. Thanks, Courtney P.
