Places like this is what makes NYC the greatest place on earth. Staley-Wise is now one of my favorite photography galleries in the city. It may be a little small but they manage to fit a lot in without making it feel too cluttered. In addition to the regular gallery space they’ve got a side area where they keep their archival boxes of original prints(from some of the best photographers). Above all the preservation boxes they’ve got more amazing framed artwork. When I went recently to the Ellen Von Unwerth show I was pleasantly surprised to see some amazing framed prints by Demarchelier, Avedon, Nick Brandt, and LaChapelle(among many others) on display. Best of all everything is for sale so you can play the«If I wont the lottery, which one would I buy» game. I chose the $ 45,000 Nick Brandt print. You can’t go rummaging through their archives but I know they’d let you see anything if you asked, it’s much better than any museum(other than maybe the George Eastman House in Rochester). They also have a huge wall of photo books you could look through which was very nice. In addition to all the marvelous artwork they had, the people I talked to here were extremely nice, helpful, and not at all pushy or condescending. I can’t wait to come back.

Staley-Wise is one of my favorite galleries — they specialize in fashion photography. We did an event with them and it was a smashing success. The space is a bit of a labyrinth, but it’s worth a visit — right now they have an amazing Avedon show!
