Steve’s Halal cart opened a few months ago(I think) on the SW corner of Broadway and 168th Street. I had the chicken and lamb over rice($ 6), and was very happy with it. Steve has two kinds of rice, yellow and«spicy,» and I opted for the latter. The spices in the rice are more warm than hot — I think the dominant flavors are cumin and cinnamon, rather than any kind of chili pepper. The chicken and lamb were good — not particularly notable but they certainly didn’t detract from the meal. They were cooked with green peppers and onions, which came just how I like them — not raw, but still a bit crisp. The salad was above average for a halal cart — fresh iceberg lettuce, cucumbers and cabbage. The white sauce was pretty standard, and the hot sauce had some kick but didn’t leave me reaching for bread/milk/etc to ease the burn(like the Halal Guys’ sauce does). The fries were the only downside — perhaps the humid rainy day was the culprit, but they were too soft. Overall it was a very solid combo platter — not«the best in the city,» but I’ll definitely be back.
