I live in Texas now but I’ve been coming here since I lived in NYC. It’s a favorite place of my families. I’ve had better sushi elsewhere but their food has always been good, both cooked and raw. The staff has always been friendly even to families with kids. They’re a great place to go for beginners to sushi/Japanese food and for those with less adventurous palets.

1995 — awesome now — closed out of business I hope. My last takeout went in the trash.

I don’t know how to review this establishment because I came here hoping that I would get my sushi fix but yet I came out feeling sick as a North Korean refugee. Came here on a early Friday evening around 5pm for dinner. The place was empty and the employees all greeted me in Cantonese.(Don’t know why but the owner/Manager they spoke in Chinese). She then wanted me to by the windows behind this giant column and note that I was the only one in the restaurant. Fast forward to the food… The sashimi was not all that. Ok maybe my standards of sushi is kind of high but when you are being served sashami that is warmer then the dessert sand in Qatar and the texture as rubbery as fried gluten then you know something is wrong with your sashimi. the specialty rolls were smaller then a typical roll and that’s even more messed up considering that it is nearly double the price. Thinking that this place would have some stellar sushi made by my own countrymen but boy was I wrong. P.S — serve some brown rice please. People are on diets these days.

Worst meal I’ve had in years. We ordered some of the«japanese tapas» with the intention of ordering sushi later if we were still hungry. We ordered the Gyoza, Chicken Liver, squid legs, chicken meatballs, and the seafood pancake. The prices were very reasonable so we figured why not. Now we know why not. If the dish wasn’t sub-par, it was awful. In particular the seafood pancake and the chicken liver. We proceeded to leave as fast as we could to maybe get pizza on the way home. We wondered why the place was empty on a saturday night, despite the slick look of the place. It didn’t help that our waitress was unfriendly and discourteous. The only time she ever showed an ounce of concern as to how our meal was going was when we quickly asked for the bill with a nearly untouched seafood pancake still on our table. She asked if something was wrong with it. Being the polite guy I am, I informed her that I wasn’t expecting the taste of this dish. My girlfriend was not so nice and simply told her it was«not good.» Knowing that there are plenty of good Japanese restaurants on the UES… it’s amazing this place is still in business. I recommend Neo Sushi, Sushi Suki or anywhere but here.

This is a review for a take-out order. I have never set foot in this restaurant. Not the best sushi I have ever had for sure. Far from it, to say the least. Specialty rolls are SMALL. And I mean the same size as a regular role but they cost more. Their spicy tuna is average tasting but there is nothing to it. Definitely wouldn’t come back here. Try another sushi place in the UES.

Still here — a-crankin’ out the maki. I came here on a regular basis«back in the day» — but not so often now. Sit at the sushi bar — you’ll get a better result. the green River roll is tasty. Hamachi hand rolls are good, too.

A bit on the expensive side, but the fish was super fresh and service really attentive — although it was pretty empty due to it being a long holiday weekend. High praise for the fresh, nicely spicy wasabi. The Salmon Fever roll and seaweed salad with additional veggies, like squash and peppers, were the highlights of my dining experience — everything else was fresh, but eh.

Had this trendy diner-feel but didn’t resonate when we ate our dinner. Something about the sushi didn’t taste fresh enough and the portions were smaller than I expected.

I am so surprise that this place is still in business. The rolls were poorly made… rice was scattered everywhere. There were too much rice in an individual roll as well. I order the Chirachi bowl, which basically is a dish of assorted fish over a bed of seasoned rice. The sea bass that was in my bowl is not fresh. I have eaten plenty of sushi in my life — not to mention that I am Asian! I used to work at a fine-dining sushi restaurant for years. When I told my server that the fish was not fresh. She said, «Is it ok?»…OFCOURSENOT. However, I was very patient and asked her to kindly inform the chef about this. She came back and said, «The chef said the fish arrived today». Then she walked away without trying to satisfy me. I let it go. The other fish was very chewy. It was not cut right. The only good fish that was good was salmon and tekka… which of course, there could never been anything wrong to that. My Lychee martini was way too sweet. My husband’s spicy sushi combo was way too spicy and the sushi rice was not properly made… I believed it lacked some mirin as well as vinegar. I would never go back to this place again, even when I live 2 blocks away. HORRIBLE.

The service was slow on a friday night. We walked in, they wanted to sit us in the middle by a giant column and when we went further back, as there were plenty of great seats by the window. At this point they took their sweet time simply because they wouldn’t see it behind the bend. so if a customer isn’t visible from your station they’re not there? First debacle was the miso soup. There WAS A HAIRINIT! DISGUSTING. They took it away and barely apologized(wasn’t on the check in the end) but it ruined the whole night. Then, the specialty rolls, while described so great in the menu were small, tasteless and underwhelming. The white fish sushi had a strong fishy taste. Their simplest stuff was the edible stuff(like tuna roll.) The drinks were good but everything else ruined the entire experience. I say STAYAWAY! The harsh reviews here are earned!

A friend and I decided on some late night sushi for dinner and found ourselves walking past Sushi Hana. The picture windows and lovely atmosphere brought us in. I had been there once before a few years ago but frankly didn’t really remember it and figured it was worth a second try. I loved the lighting fixtures which hang from the ceiling like stainless steel octopuses. The décor is really appealing, natural branches, sleek table settings and simple flower arrangements. Clean and simple, exactly the way I want my sushi to taste. We each had a salad to start, and were pleased to see ‘real’ lettuce instead of iceberg, good tomatoes, carrots and radishes and a very nice ginger dressing on the side. We shared 3 rolls with seaweed on the outside as I always request it. Eel with cucumber, spicy tuna and salmon/avocado. They were all good, but nothing special. The standard sushi you’ll find at any of about 40 restaurants on the UES. The wasabi, I will warn you, is EXTRA hot and we weren’t sure why– or what made it that way. The ginger was better than normal, and I wondered if perhaps they pickle it themselves. The service was attentive and quick and though she couldn’t really answer most of our questions, she certainly tried. We were rather entertained by the drunk guy on a date a few tables over from us. He kept yelling woooooohooooo and then getting yelled at by the middle aged couple sitting next to them. It was really quite amusing to me, but I couldn’t figure out why his cute date tolerated it instead of taking off. All in all, this restaurant fine. Nothing to write home about, but nothing to avoid either.

This place should be embarrassed! After passing up Poke Sushi(for good reason — read their review!), a group of friends and I decided to eat at Sushi Hana. I’m surprised this place is still in business. PROS: Nothing. Well, it was trendy looking. But cheap, 70s porno-trendy looking. CONS: 1 — My friend pulled a hair — A HAIR — out of one of her rolls. How disgusting. And the waitress knew exactly what it was, because as soon as my friend started gagging, that waitress was over to our table so fast. But, no apologies, no asking if we wanted something else. She just said«that dish will be taken off of your bill.» Repulsive. 2 — If you order a combo and want brown rice, they charge you $ 1PERROLL extra. So, a combo comes with 3 rolls, which means the upcharge for brown rice would be $ 3. It’s rice, REALLY?! 3 — This place is god-damn expensive. A spicy tuna rolls is like $ 7.50. Go anywhere else in Manhattan and that tuna roll lathered in spicy mayo to mask the staleness of the tuna will set you back three, maybe four, bucks. 4 — The rolls are just slopped together. The shrimp tempura looked like it came out of a Long John Silvers value meal, just slopped together like no one cared. And they weren’t in a hurry because we were the only people in the restaurant. And as soon as you picked the thing up to eat it, it crumbled apart. Don’t eat here. They don’t care about price, they don’t care about presentation, and they sure as hell don’t care about hygiene or food safety.

Great atmosphere– I’m definitely a fan of the floor-to-ceiling windows on a cornerfront location– nice place to take in the people(and traffic) of the UES. The service and wait staff is also excellent… very friendly. But the sushi? Eh. I wouldn’t say it falls short(because it definitely is some decent sushi), but nothing exceptionally different or special than other UES locations that are not as pricey and have a better selection. I’m determined to taste every sushi place in my area and was glad to try this place out… but overall I don’t think it falls amongst the top in my list of neighborhood sushi recommendations.

The sushi is fresh, and it has a nice atmosphere, but it’s too ritzy for what it is. I thought everything from the food to the drinks were overpriced and not really worth it… I might go back as it’s a good date place, but definitely not my favorite UES sushi spot

Located less than a block from Sushi of Gari and one of the lesser known sushi gems in the city. I love this place for so many different reasons. First, they have a very cool bar next door, owned by the restaurant called Lotus, a fun place to hang out before or after your dinner. Now for the restaurant. Sushi pieces are good and all, but what really makes this place shine is that their rolls are so inventive that you won’t find many of them anywhere else in the world, for example the Mango Tango roll. That thing is so damn good we usually go through two of those on top of everything else we order! Other plusses are friendly service and it’s a lot easier to get into than some of the more well known sushi joints.

I went to Sushi Hana on a Thursday night at around 7PM. The place was empty when we arrived, but every table was full by the time we left. The atmosphere is very nice — floor to cieling windows that overlook 78th street. This is definitely a great place for a 2nd date, although it’s a little pricey. I ordered the Green Fuji roll, which was excellent and a California roll which was average.

The first bite of nigiri sushi — which was salmon(and they didn’t have king salmon, by the way, nor did they have mackerel /saba; only Spanish mackerel) had a strong, weird taste, a tad like ammonia, a tad vinegary. I puzzled over it and then thought that maybe the rice was seasoned in a strange way. The texture of the salmon was not soft and buttery, as good sushi should be, but a bit chewy. The yellow tail was just mediocre. The ikura wasn’t fresh. When I got to the super white tuna, I couldn’t even cut it with my teeth; it was chewy and the gag factor was high. I left it on my plate. The bonito had some unappealing skin on it, wasn’t fresh, and tasted just barely edible. I made my way back to the second piece of salmon and couldn’t finish chewing it; into the napkin. I told the waitress that neither the piece of salmon nor the super white tuna were edible. She argued with me that«they get their fish fresh every day.» If that’s true, and in any case, the need a new supplier. She came back a few minutes later and said, «I didn’t see the piece of salmon you said you couldn’t eat.» I said, «It’s in the napkin.» Lovely. Also, I arrived just before 7 on a Friday night. They were out of both kinds of Chardonnay and only had«house white»(the woman who sat down next to me got the same line); how do you run out of basic wine when the weekend is just beginning? I’m a sushi fanatic; this sushi literally left a horrible taste in my mouth(particularly that last piece of salmon. It was flat-out gross.) I won’t be going back; was just in the neighborhood and thought this Sushi Hana on the Upper East Side would be comparable to the *unrelated* Sushi Hana on the Upper West Side, which is fantastic. Big mistake.

What was I thinking? Ok, I really can’t take all the flak for having dined at the spot. It looks pretty good at the onset. And we got a seriously good spot, the private seating mezzanine. But it didn’t make the eh sushi or anythng else taste any better. I ordered the Grazed Yellowtail with White Truffle Oil and pumpkin sticks. The mashed gourd wrapped in the spring roll was an interesting idea but on the bland side. The fish was overly doused with oil. Like a pretty girl with no personality, nice to look at but in the long run, not worth it.

Sushi = Sucky! Don’t waste your money! Maybe the atmosphere makes up for the bad food if you dine in — I sure hope something does! We just ordered take out from here for lunch today. First of all, I specifically told the woman on the other end of the phone TWICE that there were 4SEPARATE orders of rolls. What does she do? She sticks them all together in 2 large containers. So each person ordered one spicy tempura roll plus other rolls — so we each had to pick through the 2 containers to take out the rolls we had ordered… wtf? Then one of people had specifically requested no roe on his rolls… well, that request went out the window as well. Not to mention, all of the hot dishes that were ordered(dumplings, tempura) all arrived cold. I would have understood(considering today’s bad weather) if our office was really far away, but the delivery arrived very quickly after we placed the order. Oh and the topper was that the avocado in everyones’ rolls was soggy and disgusting. So I just spent twice as much as I normally spend on lunch on something that wasn’t even half as good as I normally get. Lesson learned — I’m sticking with Aki and Cork & Fin for my lunchtime sushi from now on!
