Great music, expensive drinks. When I went with a group of friends they accommodated us and found us a place to sit. That night everyone got a lesson before the evening’s performance began.

Rude rude rude hostess. Blonde. Rude. She said you have to pay to see the band. Didn’t let us sit at the bar at first. But the rule is only if you see the band you have to pay.

The band, The George Gee Orchestra, was great, fantastic even. The place was packed. I had dinner and three cocktails. The staff was great! The food was great! The orchestra was great! Drinks? Sucked. Three drinks, and they were all watered down. My suggestion is BYOB or come with a buzz, otherwise, you are paying a high price for watered down drink. I wonder if the bartender knows that there are actual drink recipes or is this just a way to keep costs down?

Regular customer here. Just reading through the rest of the reviews on here and thought I’d chime in to provide a helpful perspective for anyone considering swinging by(sorry – had to). Swing 46 is first and foremost a jazz and supper club, so everything is about the music. If you want to see the best swing bands in New York, come to 46. George Gee and his band are here weekly, Stan Rubin’s band plays, and a million other wonderful, wonderful musicians play here EVERYSINGLENIGHT. Yes, there’s a cover(usually), unless you’re sitting down to dinner, but once you hear the band play for five minutes, you’ll understand why. Great musicians don’t work for free! And the great musicians are why this place is the best damn swing dance club in the state. This is where I learned to swing dance – I think that’s all I need to say on that score(More music puns! Again, sorry…) The menu may not be the trendiest thing ever, but there’s a lot of love and care that goes into every plate and every drink, and the quality is top-notch. Plus, the bartenders are the friendliest, coolest people you will ever meet(and very helpfully tend towards a heavy pour). Which brings me to my next point… Swing 46 is family. Come more than twice and you’ll feel like a regular. The people who make this place happen – from the bartenders to the waiters to the band leaders to a million other people who own, run, and work at 46 – are some of the best and most dedicated people I’ve met. They live to bring great live jazz to New Yorkers and tourists and to give us lucky patrons a place to dance our [expletive] socks off. Swing 46 is the best. So much love. P. S. In answer to the multiple choice question below, «Good for dancing?», GREAT for dancing.

Horrible food, i am so disappointed. We ordered food and drink to stay for jazz but they asked us to pay cover charge too… I will not recommend this place !!!

This place is love at first sight for an old soul like myself. Went here with a couple of friends last night. For a $ 15 cover, you get to listen to a live jazz band playing classics and dance to tunes such as «The Best Is Yet to Come». The vibe was fun and cozy, and many were up there swing dancing while clad in dapper attire. At one point, during a break between sets, they even had a swing dancing lesson. It can get a bit loud, but wonderful for people watching and letting loose.

Truly a wonderful place for big band music in the tradition of the 1930’s and 1940’s. I know of nowhere else that you can get outstanding live music, dancing(even a free dance lesson from an outstanding instructor), and dinner for little more than dinner alone would cost somewhere else. This place is a treasure.

Way overpriced for the experience. Only thing good was the music. Food is mediocre at best, everyone in the party has to order a full overpriced entrée. Don’t know how you can make a crummy dirty martini but they did it. And even though you’ve just paid for an entire dinner they charge you 20 bucks each as a «music fee.» Overall not worth spending time in the heart of tourist central

Excellent experience, good music, fun dancing. Drawbacks include how pricey everything was(two person meal including 4 drinks and seating near the band totaled up to about $ 180) and it wasn’t quite as populated as I was hoping, though I think this might have to do with the fact that I went on Monday, when the dance lessons aren’t offered. I feel like I got the wrong impression, so make no mistake: this is an upscale venue. Definitely an experience worth having, if you can afford the price tag.

Remember that 3 stars is a good review! This place is fun, at times intimate, and a good place to learn how to swing(Free lessons). So why only 3 stars? Everything has the Theater District price attached to it. $ 15 cover for music, every entrée over $ 25, cocktails starting at $ 15…it all adds up quickly. But I wouldn’t dismiss this place. We came here for a birthday party and everyone had a blast! The music is great, the DJ sets in between are low so you can talk, and as mentioned above the swing lessons gave everyone the encouragement they needed to get up and dance. I would only go back for a special occasion, but I think everyone should at least stop at the bar and grab a drink to listen to some live jazz.

The atmosphere is very 1940s supper club — dark wood, big band jazz and dancing. Terrific place for a date night if a bit on the pricey side. George Gee is always wonderful to hear and dance to — he plays on Tuesdays. Sam Coleman is a wonderful swing dance instructor who gets everyone on the dance floor and makes learning swing truly enjoyable. I’m fond of this place and appreciate that it exists, helping to keep Lindy Hop alive and visible in New York.

Extremely overpriced $ 20 admissions fee, another fee for each item checked at the door, minimum of 2 drink requirement, and don’t think you will be able to sit at a table and watch unless you’re eating dinner there – yes, even though you paid the astronomically high cover charge. Management rude to my party of 3, shuffling us around the venue and after 30 minutes we wanted to leave and they would not refund our money. BEWARE do not go to this tourist trap! Your money and time would be better spent elsewhere. That’s for sure.

Three stars for the effort — the jazz band was fantastic, and the atmosphere was great. We were sold hard on the way in, being told that the band was going to start in 30 minutes — 1.5 hours later we heard the first signs of a horn. A bit sheisty. We were also told that the drinks were phenomenal, given that there was a mixologist on site… i’ve got to say the drinks were not great at all. Good news is, they waived the cover if we ordered drinks(your mileage may vary). Also great that someone started teaching some dance moves. Unfortunately there were only 10 people there so it was tough to drum up the crowd.

Came in for big band dinner and show. $ 15 a person is not bad at all, and the experience was well worth it. Drinks are crafty and strong, the food is superb. The special of the day was the red snapper and was just perfect. Forget the bands name now but was reminiscent of the rat pack era, swing /big band /jazz numbers, the guys played all night. Would definitely come back again when I’m in the area. Wish we had more places like this in LA!

Sunday Night with Vanessa Trouble + 5 pc Red Hot Swing band. SWINGDANCEING&SINATRA among great selection from a talented and entertaining group. Fun crowd is not crowded at 9pm — 18+ tables facing stage seating 75 – 90 seats, room accomdation is adequate. Cosmos are truly good. Crab cake and Swing salad are yummy for sure. Service is awesome — loving our personable server. TIP: its about 50 °F outside but a nice cozy 70 °F inside. I am in tank top and neither hot nor cold. Edith Pilaf next. I was expecting a good old dive bar but this place is clean and brings the class without being stuffy. Good fun! Bonus: food is good. i am pleasnatly surprised.

food is actually a lot better than I thought it would be — good variety on the menu and they have a Wellington appetizer, them being a supper club known more for their music. It’s a little pricey, but not for the district. They charge a $ 15 cover for the band, which is a little silly if you’re eating dinner, but the band was good… not great, but good. I guess the only complaint would be the VOLUME — don’t expect to come here and talk with your date. The volume is on 10 and truly needs to be about a 6. But, the service was good and it was a nice atmosphere. It’s not a every week place, but I could maybe see coming here again.

I came here on a Tuesday night with my fiancée. I wanted to check out if this place would be a good venue for a networking event I’m planning. I went at 7pm and the place was empty. That was a bit worrying but people filled in quickly at 8pm. It seems like most people who came were regulars and they all knew the live band would begin at 8:30pm. We ordered the almond crusted calamari, swing salad, beet salad and pork chops. I wouldn’t order the calamari again, I think they forgot the«almond crusted» part because it tasted like regular fried calamari to me. The beet salad was normal and the pork chops were ok. It was slightly overcooked. Our bill ended up being $ 150 for 2 drinks, 3 appetizers, 1 entrée and 2 entrance fees. It’s $ 15 per person for the music. Some would say it’s a bit hefty but it’s like any other club that charges a cover. Also, most people stay several hours to eat and dance so the turnover is really low compared to places that have live music. There was also a free group swing lesson for about 30 minutes so I think that was already worth the $ 15 cover charge. I’d definitely be back. This place is soooo fun!

i was very skeptical about Swing 46 as a dinner spot, but not too shabby! It’s dark and cool looking on the inside with the staff looking the part. We came for an early dinner, party of 4 just in time for 2 for 1 happy hour and ordered the $ 30 prix fixe menu which was decent value. the salad portions were good– however i felt the caesar was a little too anchovy-y(my pops disagrees thought it was on point). The hangar steak was tasty and they cooked mine perfectly medium-rare although kind of a small portion. my sisters got the pasta primavera, i thought it looked like crap but they enjoyed but again, not a very large portion. the brownie dessert wasn’t good and was very small. i stuck with the mango gelato and was happy with it. all in all, not rushing back there but it’s a solid option if you’re in the area and looking for a different atmosphere. i also been for just drinks and dancing– waiter service for a large group was so-so but overall a very good time. some of the more advanced dancers were real fun to watch and the band was delightful.
