Tango Porteno

South Street Sea Port milonga on Sunday nights is really great! The venue is really excellent, located on pier 16 right next to South Street Sea Port out in the open air. They call it dancing under the stars but this being New York you don’t actually get to see more than one or two actual stars over the usual city lights. However, that doesn’t detract for the setting and the atmosphere in the least. The milonga is held every Sunday night from about 7pm until Midnight during the warmer months of the year. They’re there rain or shine and just move to the nearby cover of Pier 17 when it’s raining.
I’ve come here on a number of occasions and had an amazing time every single time. They have free lessons for beginners but I really recommend taking a proper tango class if you want to get down and mix it up with other more experienced dancers. There’s absolutely no barrier to entry however (the first time I went there knowing absolutely no tango). There is usually a big crowd and the people are all very nice and friendly.
There’s a small outdoors bar right nearby so you can have some drinks and just hang out and watch people dance while listening to nice tango music outside but it’s much more fun to get down on the dance floor! The only problem is lack of bathrooms. The mall on Pier 17 closes around 10 or 11 so you have to really plead with the security guards if you don’t want to end up holding it all the way home. There were probably portopots around but I never saw them.
